History of the Indian Tribes of North America

1855 - MCKENNEY, Thomas and HALL, James. History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs. Philadelphia: D. Rice and A.N. Hart, 1855. Three volumes. Royal octavo, original deluxe full brown morocco, decorative blind-stamped cover-borders, raised bands, all edges gilt. $32,000.Early octavo edition of one of the most recognized and desirable American color plate books produced in the 19th century, illustrated with 120 splendid fully hand-colored lithographic plates by J.T. Bowen after Charles Bird King's original oil paintings, "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed" (Howes). Handsome in publisher's deluxe morocco. In commissioning the Indian Tribes of North America, McKenney aimed to educate the American public about these greatly exotic warriors and chiefs and to preserve them for posterity in a series of beautiful portraits. Most of the original oil portraits were painted from life in studio of Charles Bird King, to whom McKenney brought many of the subjects. The rest were copied from watercolors executed in the field by a young frontier artist named James Otto Lewis. The finished portraits resided in the Smithsonian until 1865, when fire consumed the institution and destroyed most of the paintings. As a result, the folio and octavo editions are particularly vital in their "faithful recording of the features and dress of celebrated American Indians who lived and died long before the age of photography" (McKenney-Hall Portrait Gallery, 23). First published in folio 1836-44 and in octavo 1848-50. Howes M129. Field 992. See Sabin 43411. Occasional faint spotting to interiors; plates generally clean, hand-coloring bright. Some skillful color restoration to extremities of publisher's deluxe morocco. An extremely good set in the publisher's desirable deluxe morocco bindings. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Holy Land

1855 - ROBERTS, David. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia. London: Day & Son, 1855-56. Six volumes in three. Quarto, contemporary full brown blind-stamped morocco sympathetically rebacked, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $18,000.First quarto edition of this monumental early visual record of the Middle East by the first Westerner permitted to enter sacred sites, with 250 magnificent tinted lithographs.Inquisitive Western minds first glimpsed the mysteries of Egypt and the Middle East in detail through David Roberts' folio-sized Holy Land, issued in 41 parts from 1842 to 1849 and containing 250 full-page hand-colored lithographs produced from his magnificent, on-site drawings. Roberts was the first Westerner to be granted permission to enter whichever sacred mosque or monument he desired. His images of these sacred places established what many people even today envision as the aura of Egypt and the Holy Land. "Roberts' Holy Land has a world-wide reputation; nothing of a similar character has ever been produced that can bear a comparison with it" (Ran, 6). Louis Haghe, considered the foremost lithographer of his time, transferred the exquisitely detailed drawings to stone. This is the first quarto edition of 1855-56, containing all 250 lithographic plates contained in the folio edition, including a frontispiece portrait of Roberts, six pictorial title pages, and two engraved maps. Undoubtedly the most famous of these is Plate 240, the great sphinx, still commonly reproduced in poster art. A considerable number of plates are printed in two tints; plates 213 and 240 are printed in three. See Abbey Travel 385, 388; Tooley 401. Light marginal edge-wear to plates 180-82. Occasional foxing affecting versos of plates only, small and faint marginal dampstain along gutter in Volume VI, images quite clean and fine. Light expert restoration to original morocco boards. A very good set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

All four volumes bound in full polished calf with red and black leather spine labels. VOLUME I: 556 pages, indexed, plus 11 plates including the nearly six foot long folding plate of the "Panoramic View from the Summit of Santa Lucia, Santiago." Leather covers are rubbed and scuffed. Contemporary inked name on title page, and elsewhere with some ink offsetting and bleed through to adjacent leaves. Scattered foxing, only minimally affecting edges of a few plates. VOLUME II: 300 pages, plus 36 plates and one folding map. Leather covers are rubbed and scuffed. Older inked name on title page and a few pages inside, has caused offsetting and ink bleed through to other pages including Plate VIII adjacent to page 112, "Indian Antiquities." Scattered light to moderate foxing, only minimally affecting any plates except for XXXVII adjacent to page 213, "Tachymenes Chilensis," a black and white plate. Other plates remain generally clean, and the hand colored bird plates are very nice. VOLUME III: 492 pages, plus one plate. Leather covers are heavily rubbed and portions of the spine cover are missing. Spine labels are present and intact. Top cover is loosened. Mostly light scattered foxing throughout. VOLUME VI: 420 pages. Leather covers are scuffed and heavily worn. Spine cover is mostly detached with some portions missing. Spine labels are chipped on edges, though mostly intact with good lettering. Top hinge (internal) is broke and there is a little separation between front end page and title page. Foxing and offsetting, mostly on first and last leaves, and title page is a little darkened. Due to the weight and size of this set, extra charges will apply for Priority and/or International shipping. . First Edition. Full Leather. Fair/No Dust Jacket. 4to.

Quittung mit eigenh. U. ("Elisabeth"). Wien, 17. XI. 1855.

1855. ½ S. Folio.

        The Song of Hiawatha.

Ticknor and Fields, Boston,, 1855.. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles gilt to spine, sides panelled in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. Publisher's adverts at the rear dated November 1855. Rubbing to extremities, small pin perforation to front free endpaper, sound, smart and internally clean, an excellent copy. First US edition, first printing, a lovely copy in the original cloth, of Longfellow's epic poem, a Native American love story, and one of the most enduring productions of American Romanticism. The book went through five printings in the first year, but this copy has all the requisite textual errors to denote the first printing: p.27, line 9 "heron"; pg.32, line 11 "In the Moon"; pg.39, line 11 and pg.268, lines 11 and 14, "Wahonomin", not "wahonourn"; pg.96, "Dove" instead of "Dived"; pg.278 "Cooed the Omemee". The US edition was preceded by the London edition in the same year, but is preferred.
