Histoire de la Premiere Mission Catholique au vicariate Melanesie

Carcassonne: P. Labau, 1854. First edition. Map, facsimile letter and 23 plates. 8vo. Later quarter morocco over marbled boards, original wrappers bound in. A fine copy. First edition. Map, facsimile letter and 23 plates. 8vo. WITH BEAUTIFUL WOODCUT PLATES. A fine copy of this rare work on the first Catholic mission in Melanesia. Verguet was a missionary of the Societe de Marie whose activities long preceded that of the Missionaires du Sacre-Coeur in Melanesia and the western Pacific. Arriving in Sydney in June 1845, Verguet and his fellow missionaries stayed until November when they travelled to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands (Makira, Santa Isabel etc). Verguet's reports on his interactions with the Aborigines are especially valuable as the local population at the time had almost been wiped out. He visited New Caledonia twice in 1845, as well as New Zealand. His account combines both personal reminscences, correspondence and a history of the mission at Port-de-France. There is also a substantial chapter on New South Wales, including an image of the monument to La Perouse. The work's appeal is enhanced by the series of beautiful woodcut plates illustrating local inhabitants and views. Despite the title-page calling for 20 plates, here we have 23. It also includes a comparative vocabulary of French, English, Tahiti, Hawaii, the Marquesas, Fiji, Aboriginal Australia, Maori, Tonga and Samoa. Verguet's Balade vocabulary is the first printed record of the language. Taylor, Pacific Bibliography, p.520; Edridge, Solomon Island Bibliography, p.250; O'Reilly & Reitman, 2934; Ferguson, 17698B; Bagnall, 5710

[Tennyson, Frederic- Autograph Manuscript Poem] "Davy and the Dignified Flunkey

A fascinating manuscript poem by Alfred Tennyson written by Frederick Tennyson, brother of Alfred. The poem was originally wedded to a copy of Frederick Tennyson's "Days and Hours," (1854) and presented to Charles F. Goss from his pal, A Tennyson, but now stands alone. A few lines: "Most dignified Flunkey beware of the hour/ When Davy shall ask thee with manner so sour,/ If yet thou hast washed with the ordered soft soap/ For if not, you ought to be whipped with a rope..." 16 lines in total, followed by "Alf. Tennyson/ Poet Laureate." A rare survival indeed.

De openstelling van Japan voor de vreemde natiën in 1856. Volgens zoowel uitgegevene, als niet uitgegevene bronnen ... Amsterdam, J.D. Sybrandi, 1861. 8vo. With lithographed frontispiece by Hendrik Leonardus van Hoogstraten after Gerard Jacobus Scheurleer, depicting the procession of the Russian embassy to Nagasaki in 1804. Contemporary red half sheepskin.

Cordier, Japonica, col. 555; Hesselink, "333 years of Dutch publications on Japan", V-A2 37. First and only edition of a rare account of the opening of Japan to the West. The work gives a detailed history of the Russian, French, English and American attempts to force Japan to open its ports to foreign ships. After centuries of relative seclusion, during which the Dutch were the only Westerners allowed in Japan, the American commodore Matthew Perry persuaded Japan to sign the Kanagawa Treaty in 1854. This marked the end of the so called sakoku policy and would eventually lead to the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1868. The present work was partly based on unpublished sources and gives interesting details on the political relations between Japan and the Netherlands, the reform of the Japanese administration and monetary system, as well as the geography, industry and culture of Japan. Some spotting, part of last free endpaper torn off, binding worn and corners damaged. Overall in good condition.

Map of Oswego County, New York, from actual surveys under the direction of Samuel Geil ... by B.J. Hunter

Philadelphia: Gillett, Matthews, 1854. Engraved map, full original hand-colouring, folding in 36 sections, backed onto linen at a contemporary date, edged with green silk ribbon. A fine copy with beautiful colouring of this important large-scale map of Oswego County, New York Established in 1816, Oswego County occupies 968 square miles of land on the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. The present handsome map was the largest and best of Oswego in the nineteenth century. Each township is individually coloured, with every rural property owner located and identified by name. The map includes fifteen integral town plans (some flanked by listings of local businesses) and eight vignette views. The town plans are for the following: Constantia, Mexico, Sand Bank, Pulaski, Oswego, Cleveland, Washingtonville, Fulton, Central Square, Phoenix, Parish, Scriba, New Haven, Hannibal and Hannibal Centre. It is interesting to note that although the map is constructed by Hunter from surveys produced by Geil, it was registered for copyright (in 1854) by Robert Pearsall Smith. Beginning in 1853, Pearsall Smith had contracted with a number of local surveyors to construct maps of New York counties: this was evidently one of those maps. The map is here presented as a case map, sectioned and linen-backed at a contemporary date, rather than in wall map form, thus preserving the beauty of the original colouring, and without the varnish that tends to be such an unwelcome feature of wall maps of the period. Ristow American Maps & Mapmakers p.392.; not in Rumsey.

Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora and Chihuahua, Connected with the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission, During the Years 1850, '51, '52, and '53

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1854. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes in the original green cloth, rebacked with original spine cloth laid down. Folding tinted lithograph frontispiece in each volume, plus 14 additional tinted lithograph plates, many uncolored engraved plates, woodcut illustrations throughout, and one folding map in rear pocket. Some foxing to plates, occasional other foxing or offestting, but text and illustrations generally clean, map reinforced on the verso, with a bit of chipping only affecting top right corner. Jenkins (Basic Texas Books) describes this as "the most scholarly and scientific description of Southwest Texas of its era," as well as "one of the best American travel books ever written." Bartlett provides a day to day account of the movements of the boundary survey party (scientists, artists, teamsters, surveyors, and a military escort) as they traveled from Indianola, Texas to San Antonio, Fredericksburg, El Paso, San Diego, and back to Corpus Christi. The expedition "was valuable for contributions regarding mines, minerals, and geology in general, and vastly advanced knowledge of the natural history, ethnology, meteorology, and topography of the areas traversed" (Jenkins p. 31). Many early emigrants to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona used Bartlett's account as a guidebook on their trek west. Farquhar 17; Wagner-Camp 234; Graff 198; Howes B-201; Sabin 3746.

Sabin commented on the combined edition: "Of the two works united, it is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivaled interest and beauty, giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America, from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle." Sabin commented on the combined edition: "Of the two works united, it is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivaled interest and beauty, giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America, from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle." Hand colored plates are bright; a remarkably clean and beautiful set (lacking one volume) in an elegant original binding.

Nine Months of a Hawaiian Missionary Newspaper, With the First Report of King Kamehameha III’s Death and Perry’s Mission to Japan

Honolulu, HI 1854 - Newspapers. Bound volume of The Friend (Honolulu, HI) containing 22 consecutive issues dated from Feb 1, 1854 through Oct 25, 1855. "The American Sloop-of-war SARATOGA, Capt. Walker, arrived at this port on the 29th ult., in 25 days from Japan, which is the shortest passage ever made. The S. brings Capt. H.A. Adams, U.S.N., as bearer of despatches to the Government at Washington. The point of interest in this intelligence is the fact that Com. Perry concluded a TREATY OF AMITY AND FRIENDSHIP with the EMPIRE OF JAPAN."The Friend was the mouthpiece of Congregational missionaries and reported everything from important local Hawaiian issues to international news reprinted from eastern sources. The nine months covered here feature a great deal of the news of the day, ranging from war between England and Russia to lots of whaling and maritime news including shipping arrivals and departures, the discovery of new sperm whaling grounds, naval intelligence, all peppered with a liberal dose of good old fashioned conservative proselytizing. This particular volume was sent from Sag Harbor, New York to Thomas Spencer, a Rhode Island sea captain who went native, opening a successful ship's chandlery and marrying a local girl. This volume has the first report of the death of Hawaiian King Kamehameha III, including the order of procession (Jan, 1855 issue) and the first report of the signing of the US-Japan Treaty negotiated by Commander Matthew Perry (May 6, 1854 issue), and an Independence Day celebration (July 6, 1854 issue). The Friend was a local newspaper published from 1843 to 1954. Published by and for the missionaries, it is invaluable as a source of information concerning the activities, experiences, and accomplishments of the 19th-century Congregational missionaries to Hawaii as well as 20th-century figures and the development of the United Church of Christ in Hawaii. Today, The Friend is the newsletter of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ.Thomas Spencer (1815-1884) was a whaling captain out of Warwick, Rhode Island. He was stranded in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and decided to remain there. He opened a very successful ship's chandlery in Honolulu and later purchased property on the "big" island in the village of Hilo. His brothers also joined him in Hawaii. He was a notorious celebrity, well liked by all, and especially supportive of the Hawaiian royal family. He is buried in Oahu. The children of Thomas Spencer and Makaleka (Margaret) Robinson were Thomas Spencer, Jr., and Charles, Lucy, Jennie, Lily, Helen, Margaret, and Kaliko Spencer.

      D. Appleton & Company, 1854., 1854. First edition. 8vo. Two volumes. Each volume has the inked name on the half-title page of Mexican politician, diplomat, and writer Joaquin Maria del Castillo y Lanzas (1801-1878). Original green cloth with decorations and titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine of each volume, xxii, 506 (6) pp. & xvii, 624 pp. Folded tinted lithograph frontispiece in each volume, plus 14 additional tinted lithograph plates, many uncolored engraved plates, woodcut illustrations throughout, and one folding map in Volume I. Basic Texas Books 12 describes this as "the most scholarly and scientific description of Southwest Texas of its era," as well as "one of the best American travel books ever written." Bartlett provides a day to day account of the movements of the boundary survey party (scientists, artists, teamsters, surveyors, and a military escort) as they traveled from Indianola, Texas to San Antonio, Fredericksburg, El Paso, San Diego, and back to Corpus Christi. The expedition "was valuable for contributions regarding mines, minerals, and geology in general, and vastly advanced knowledge of the natural history, ethnology, meteorology, and topography of the areas traversed" Many early emigrants to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona used Bartlett's account as a guidebook on their trek west. Map has a professionally repaired tear, and old damp stain to the upper corner margin of a few pages in Volume I, else a handsome, bright, attractive set in near fine condition.

[Kyoto 1854, Fujii]. Blue covers, accordion folded, title. slip, ca. 16.5 x 27 cm., covers faded, edges bit worn, solid,. contents clean, solid, 2 volume set: 15+16 double leaves, 30. double-page illustrations, complete. R A R E FIRST EDITION. OBSCURE & SUPERBLY PAINTED WORK, DONE IN THE CHINESE STYLE This is a famous and illusive book ! Nakabayashi Chikutoh lived between 1775-1853, was a native of Owari province, but spent most of his life in Kyoto, where he studied under the celebrated Miyasaki Impo. He was known for his rather peculiar painting technique, using his paint as dry as possible. His work was chiefly in landscape painting, although some of the pictures of bamboos left by him are very fine. * Other signatures used by him [studio names] were Seisho. Narimasa, Hakumei, Taigen-an, Yusai and Tozan Inshi. * He used his great skill and artistry to leave a legacy of other books: CHIKUTOH GAFU; YUSAI GAFU; CHIKUTO SANSUI GAKOH, CHIKUTOH SANJIN JIMBUTSU, and this title, published from 1812-1852 respectively. Much of above extracted from L. Brown, see citation in bibliography. * Per Hillier: The most eminent among the teachers [of Chinese -style painting] of the time was Nakabayashi Chikutoh. His principal master was Kamiya Tenyu, by whose notable collection of Chinese paintings Chikutoh was no doubt led in the direction of Nanga [style], and an association with Baitsu early in his career may have helped to broaden his outlook. Ultimately, he became of the leading art theorists and wrote several books on painting, beginning with one, as early as 1801....gave some notion of his quiet, reticent kind of painting, often carried out in Sumi, of a warmth of tone and variety of brush-marks that are his hall-marks. [p.923-4]. His works are clearly influenced by and reminiscent of the most celebrated of all Chinese illustrated books, THE TEN BAMBOO and the MUSTARD SEED GARDEN [please inquire as we have these titles in stock] from the 18th century in what has been called "boneless manner" that is printed without lines or commonly referred to as the 'Shikunshi" painting tradition or style. This technique was often utilized by Zen eccentrics who painted in the Chinese manner and what Hillier cites as "dream landscapes" on p.75, wherein he includes Chikutoh and later Nanga artists. * CONTENTS: Volume 1: Orchid and Bamboo: 15 double-folds, illustrating 4 orchids and 9 bamboos; volume 2: Plum and Chrysanthemum: 17 double-folds, illustrates 6 plums, 4 chrysanthemums and 6 copies of ancient works. All illustrations are of the line type with subtle Sumi ink wash. * This is truly a stunning and unique study by an even more obscure and unusual artist. This work was done in the Zen eccentric style is superbly charming, from its stylized title slip, written in Kanbun [Chinese style] introduction and Spartan drawing techniques is reminiscent of the Chinese Ch'an [Zen] monks technique. * TADAMASA HAYASHI'S PERSONAL COPY: Both volumes are stamped at the bottom of the title slip with the celebrated collector and art dealer's personal cinnabar chop or Hanko at the bottom, with characters: "HAYASHI". * Tadamasa Hayashi (1853-1906) was one of the most important figures in the development of Japonism in Europe, as well as in the history of late 19th century Japanese art and crafts. The inability of the Japanese to recognize the aesthetic value of Ukiyo-e made prints readily and cheaply available to exporters like Hayashi, who marketed them in Europe as art prints, fetching appropriate prices and making large profits. Hayashi became the most renowned Japanese art dealer and collector who contributed significantly to the formation of French taste and knowledge of Japanese art in the late 19th century. He worked closely with Siegfried Bing, where the two of them opened a magnificent art shop called "Maison de l'Art Nouveau" in Paris in the late 19th century, showing works of artists that would become known as the "Art Nouveau" movement, named after their store. Siegfried Bing, was important to the Japanese influence on art nouveau, and he later released a whole series of books titled: "LE JAPAN ARTISTIQUE" which influenced artists that were read for example by Gustav Klimt, and set off a boom in the collecting of Japanese art throughout Europe & England. * Hayashi went to Japan several times collecting art works, Japanese prints, Japanese woodcut-printed books and placed his personal seal on those he kept for himself which had special merit. This example from his collection is evidence of his discriminating and impeccable taste. Books or prints with this personal seal are highly coveted and collected ! * Check with us to see if we have any others by this artist. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: L. Wales (Boston, subscriber, pencilled initials on final part, with note of payment for the final part on 6 January 1854) A rare substantial run of the original parts from the most lavish ante-bellum work on the fruit trees of America: "the first major work executed entirely in chromolithography" (Reese). The 64 varieties featured include pear, apple, cherry, peach, plum and strawberry. The plates were all executed by the Boston firm headed by William Sharp and are accompanied by text which gives the history of each variety, a full description, its growing habit, flower and fruit, and advice on its cultivation. Each entry is headed by cross-references to the other standard European and American books and periodicals. The illustrations generally comprise a sketch of the growing habit of each tree, an outline of the fruit and occasionally an image of the flower. Charles Hovey was born in Cambridge, Mass. in 1810 and with his brother Phineas established a nursery there in 1832. By 1845 his huge collection of fruit trees included a thousand pear trees and four hundred apple trees. A keen plant breeder, he also produced a number of new varieties of Camellia. His literary output brought him to the forefront of horticultural writers with the American Gardeners' Magazine (renamed the Magazine of Horticulture ) which enjoyed great popularity between 1834 and 1868. The present work was intended by Hovey as an international show-case for what American pomologists had achieved, as well as an essential reference guide. It is his masterpiece and originally appeared in parts between 1847 and 1856 and is considered complete in two volumes with 96 plates.
