Eigenh. Brief mit U. Weimar, 19. XI. 1854.

1854. 2 SS. 8vo.

Memoirs and Correspondence of Major-General Sir William Nott. Commander of the Army of Candahar, and Envoy at the Court of the King of Oude. Edited at the Request of Sir William Nott's Daughters, Letitia Nott and Charlotte Bower, from Documents in their Exclusive Possession.

London: Hurst and Blackett, Publishers, 1854 - 2 volumes octavo (217 × 135 mm). Recent half calf, marbled boards, to style, black lettering-pieces to the second compartments, volume numbers direct to the fourth, narrow bands, gilt milling, edges sprinkled red, light brown endpapers. Light browning, some mild foxing, a very good copy, now suitably and pleasingly presented. Engraved frontispiece to each, portrait to volume I, a view of the fortress at Ghuzni to volume II. First edition. An uncommon memoir, and an important source for the First Afghan War. Nott was commissioned as ensign in the East India Company's army in 1800, and posted to the 20th Bengal Native Infantry, serving with them in the expedition to the west coast of Sumatra in 1805. From 1811 until 1825 he served as "superintendent of native pensions and paymaster of family pensions at Barrackpore", but after leave in England returned to India to take command of the 20th NI and despite having "been so long in a semi-military post, he brought his regiment into such a state of efficiency that his services were required to do the same for other regiments. He commanded a succession of native infantry regiments and on 1 December 1829 was promoted colonel" (ODNB). During the First Afghan War Nott commanded the troops at Kandahar and Quetta, sending out "small successful expeditions from both locales against rebellious tribes" (Riddick, Who was Who); and in 1842 was placed in command of "all the troops in Lower Afghanistan and Sindh, and of the political officers there". His operations in defence of Kandahar, and in relief of Kabul were rewarded by his appointment to the residency and Lucknow with the title of envoy to the king of Oudh; and the presentation of "a valuable sword in the name of the British government" by Lord Ellenborough, who told Wellington that he considered Nott to be superior to all the other generals: "Ellenborough was right. Despite his cantankerous nature Nott was by far the best general in the Anglo-Afghan War. He was also a protagonist of the sepoy, whom he compared favourably with the British soldier." In 1844 he was created GCB, voted an annuity of £1000 by the directors of the Company, and granted the freedom of the City of London. He died aged 63 on New Years' Day 1845. Bruce 4060.         Histoire Dramatique, Pittoresque et Caricaturale De La Sainte Russie (also Cayla, J.M. Histoire des Invalides. Cayla, J.M Histoire des Vaisseaux. Fellen, J.B. Louis-Napoleon, sa vie politique et privee

      J. Bry Ainé 1854 - 207 pages, 500 illustrations. An important comic style book in the evolution of comic book and sequential story telling history. Rodolphe Topffer is the father of the comic book having published Histoire de Monsieur Jabot in 1833 and Histoire de Monsieur Vieux-Bois in 1837 which would subsequently be pirated into the first American comic book, Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck in the Brother Jonathan Extra IX in 1842. Dore published his first book in 1847 at the age of 15. it was called 'Les Travaux d'Hercule' and one must assume that he was very influenced by Aubert's pirated Topffer's editions as it follows the same format - comic book cartoon sequential panel story telling. In fact, Aubert states in Hercule that it is to be part of the 'albums Jabots' and likely comissioned Dore to produce Hercule. Dore would publish his last comic book style piece in 1854, the Sainte Russie, similar panel story telling but not oblong format. He came a long way in a few years as these 500 illustrations represent some of the finest of the period. Basing his work on the writings of historians of his time, he represents the Russians as a cruel and bloodthirsty people and their history as a series of massacres. While the album was being created, French troops were engaged in battle against the Russian army in the Crimea, but it was released just as peace negotiations began. These circumstances explain its lack of success. However, it is the only album of Doré's to have been republished several times during the 20th century. It is poignant, sarcastic, cruel and brilliant. Corners a little bumped and rubbed, very solid. One of Dore's finest works. Also bound in with Cayla, J.M. Histoire des Invalides (c.1850) 112 pages. Cayla, J.M Histoire des Vaisseaux, 1860, 32 pages. Fellen, J.B. Louis-Napoleon, sa vie politique et privee, Paris 1850, 152 pages, illustrations by J.A. Beauce et H. Emy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[New York, 1854. [14]pp., on eleven leaves, each approximately 12 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches. Written on light blue paper, inlaid into card stock. An occasional very small chip at edges. Light foxing. Very good. An autograph manuscript draft section of Martin Van Buren's autobiography, which he wrote off and on from 1854 until his death, though it was not fully published from a final manuscript copy until after World War I. The present section contains his impressions of John Quincy Adams, and goes on to mention several other important American political figures of the day with whom he had frequent dealings, most significantly Henry Clay. In his writing, Van Buren attempted to be as fair and even-handed as he could, and as a result, his biographical sketch of Adams is quite sympathetic despite their adversarial relationship in the political arena: "John Quincy Adams was as honest & incorruptible as his father. He was equally bold and fearless in the avowal and maintenance of his opinions, & in his feelings, & habits more Democratic.... My respect for his character as a straightforward, well meaning man, lasted from my first acquaintance with him in my Senatorial capacity till the close of his life." The second part of the manuscript deals principally with the presidential election of 1824, the only one to be decided by the House of Representatives, in which Adams triumphed after Henry Clay threw his support to him: "There were besides many of [Adams'] personal as well as political friends who, while they desired Mr. Adams election, trembled for the consequences of success to Mr. Clay personally, on account of the peculiar relation in which he stood towards Mr. Adams & the suspicion that might arise out of a change in his position & his own election following upon that change...." Highly absorbing manuscript reflections by Van Buren on one of his erstwhile prominent political opponents.

Central Route to the Pacific, from the Valley of the Mississippi to California

Lippincott, Grambo and Co, Philadelphia 1854 - (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches). 136pp. Thirteen lithographed plates (some tinted), folding map. 46pp. of ads in the rear. Publisher's cloth, covers bordered in blind, flat spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt (repairs at the joints) Complete with the elusive map. E.F. Beale and Gwinn Heap were greatly influenced by Senator Benton in their choice of a route across Colorado and Nevada. The party travelled from Westport (Kansas City) southwest on the Santa Fe trail to Bent's Fort, then to the short-lived Fort Massachusetts, the Rio Grande Valley, the Grand River, and then to the Uncompahgre. They returned to Taos for supplies, and then continued southwest via Utah to California. The map, which is present here, was issued with only a few copies. Wheat lauds the map and spends several pages discussing the journey, saying that it has received less attention than it deserves. He notes that it is the earliest published map to show the middle Rocky Mountain region, through what is now southern Colorado, the first to depict several streams and rivers, and the first attempt to chart a route through Death Valley. This book is one of the first detailed examinations of the "Central Route" from Missouri to the Pacific, and a basic piece of Western Americana. The present copy of Heap's work includes forty-six pages of advertisements at the end, more than the usual complement of thirty-two. Cowan, p.273; Howes H378; Mintz 562; Sabin 31175; Wagner-Camp 235; Flake 3934; Rittenhouse 290; Wheat Transmississippi 808; Streeter Sale 3177. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Minor chipping to spine ends but not distracting. Contents clean and tight. The fold out map is typically missing making this example that much more desirable. Map is hand colored and measures 11.25 x 14 inches. Well preserved with just a couple splits observed. Early signature of ownership on front free end paper of Rush R. Sloane, May 20, 1854, Steamer Star of the West. The previous owner of the book researched that 'Sloane was a noted Ohio attorney and abolitionist; his house in Sandusky was a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1854, he went briefly to California, where he was appointed a Commissioner of Deeds. The steamer Star of the West was shelled in early 1861 attempting to deliver supplies to Fort Sumter; later that year, she was captured by Confederate forces.         On the Application of the Mechanical Theory of Heat to the Steam-engine" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science 12 No. 79 pp. 241-265, October 1856

1856 FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH & IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE PAPER IN WHICH CLAUSIUS FULLY PRESENTS HIS MILESTONE APPLICATION OF THE SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS, namely, that "Heat can never pass from a colder to a warmer body without some other change, connected therewith, occurring at the same time" (Schweller, Maxwell's Demon, 31). Clausius first published this work in 1854 under the title "Ãœber die Anwendung der mechanischen Wärmetheorie auf die Dampfmaschine" [and we offer that separately]. In 1856, this paper was also published in the American Journal of Science and Arts, however the The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science publication offered here is widely cited as the first in English. In his 1850 paper, the first on this subject, the German physicist and mathematician Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888) defined the relationship between work and heat and introduces the concept of "energy of a body" (equivalent to temperature), thus stating the ideas behind the first and second law of thermodynamics. The 1854 paper was the second of his works; and again, in 1856 it was published here in English. In this paper, Clausius first develops the concepts of interior work, i.e. "those which the atoms of the body exert upon each other," and exterior work, i.e. "those which arise from foreign influences which the body may be exposed", which may act on a working body of fluid or gas, typically functioning to work a piston. He then discusses the three types of heat by which Q may be divided: 1. heat employed in increasing the heat actually existing in the body; 2. heat employed in producing the interior work; 3. heat employed in producing the exterior work. Building on this logic, and following his mathematical presentation of the first fundamental theorem, Clausius then presents us with the first-ever mathematical formulation of entropy. The third paper, published in 1865, invents and first uses the word 'entropy. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis., Volume 12, No. 79. October 1856. 4to (9 x 5.5 inches; 225 x 140mm). The 13 tinted, lithographed plates are by P. S. Duval of Philadelphia after Heap's original artwork (Native Americans and scenes and views on the expedition). Howes H 378 notes that "map not inserted in all copies, "and advertisements at the back paged 1-46 in some copies, 17-32 in others." Some copies were issued with a folding map, this copy does not have the map (which is often the case). Mintz 562 says "Includes some outstanding descriptions of the Southwest landscape seen about them." Edwards, Enduring Desert, pp. 110-111: â??The earliest published account of Death Valley.... Of all the journals and diaries telling of the Mojave desert crossing, none appears comparable to the Heap in sheer readability and in picturesque descriptive quality.â? Paher, Nevada 747 says â??During the early 1850s western railroad explorations were firmly pursued. Here is the journal of the expedition of Edward F. Beale and Heap, who followed the Spanish Trail in August 1853 through southern Nevada and California while surveying the central route to California.... With its picturesque descriptions of the places he visited, Heap is among the most readable of the early journalists. Early camel material is contained in an appendix.â? Light wear to head of spine, wear to the cloth and discolored on front cover, interior is clean and fine, plates are fine and bright, a desirable copy in very good condition.

The true portraicture of His Ma[jes]ties. royall ship the Soveraigne of the Seas built in the yeare 1637. [London, Peter Pett, 1637/38]. Large engraving (66.5 x 91 cm), printed from two plates on two sheets, assembled to make a single print. With title in English across the head, a slightly different Latin title across the foot (both outside the image area), Payne's name and privilege to the right of the Latin title, and two decorated cartouches with laudatory verses in the upper corners. In passepartout (not mounted) and easily detachable framed (90 x 114 cm).

      - BM online cat. 1854,0614.252; H. Busmann, Sovereign of the Seas (2002), pp. 39-46 (locates 7 copies); Chatterton, Chats on naval prints, pp. 56-57. Rare and magnificent engraving of the extraordinary 17th-century English warship the Sovereign of the Seas, shown in full sail, flying 5 flags and more than a dozen pennons. With her more than 1500 tons and more than 100 guns, she surpassed all her contemporaries in size and gun power and cost about ten times as much as an average naval gunship. Besides being "one of the best known naval prints belonging to the seventeenth century extraordinarily rich of detail and of the greatest possible interest" (Chatterton), it is also by far the largest English engraved view to survive from the first half of the century. For the engraving, Payne had, most likely, access to the builder's draughts and plans and must have collaborated with Peter Pett for the engraving to be as representative of the ship as possible.Trimmed to the printed image at the two sides, not always completely straight, a few small tears (mostly repaired) at the head and foot, a few tiny spots and a tiny blemish, but still generally good, very attractive and printed in a crisp impression.

De openstelling van Japan voor de vreemde natiën in 1856. Volgens zoowel uitgegevene, als niet uitgegevene bronnen . Amsterdam, J.D. Sybrandi, 1861. 8vo. With lithographed frontispiece by Hendrik Leonardus van Hoogstraten after Gerard Jacobus Scheurleer, depicting the procession of the Russian embassy to Nagasaki in 1804. Contemporary red half sheepskin.

      - Cordier, Japonica, col. 555; Hesselink, "333 years of Dutch publications on Japan", V-A2 37. First and only edition of a rare account of the opening of Japan to the West. The work gives a detailed history of the Russian, French, English and American attempts to force Japan to open its ports to foreign ships. After centuries of relative seclusion, during which the Dutch were the only Westerners allowed in Japan, the American commodore Matthew Perry persuaded Japan to sign the Kanagawa Treaty in 1854. This marked the end of the so called sakoku policy and would eventually lead to the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1868. The present work was partly based on unpublished sources and gives interesting details on the political relations between Japan and the Netherlands, the reform of the Japanese administration and monetary system, as well as the geography, industry and culture of Japan. Some spotting, part of last free endpaper torn off, binding worn and corners damaged.         Journal of a Cavalry Officer; including the Memorable Sikh Campaign of 1845-1846.

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1854 - Octavo (242 × 152 mm). Rifle green hard-grained morocco presentation binding, title gilt direct to the spine, low bands with single gilt fillet, compartments elaborately gilt with floral tools, concentric panels in gilt and blind to the boards, single fillet edge-roll, all edges gilt, floral roll gilt to the turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Very light shelfwear, faint foxing front and back, some offsetting from the frontispiece and plans, but overall a very good copy indeed. Folding map frontispiece and two folding plans. Loosely inserted bifolium, offering a selection of reviews of the present work, St. Neots printed; and another with extracts from local papers regarding memorials to Humbley's father, late Rifle Brigade and unsurprisingly a Peninsula and Waterloo veteran. First edition, this copy inscribed by the author to his son; "William Wellesley Humbley with the best love of his father, The Author, Cressener House, St. Neots, Jany. 10 1882". Extremely uncommon, just 8 copies on Copac, OCLC adds 4 more, all in North America. One of the most elusive, and sought after, accounts of campaigning in the Punjab. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, Humbley, (1815-1886), was commissioned as ensign with the 2nd West India Regiment, and became a cornet by purchase with the 4th Light Dragoons, before joining the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers, with whom he saw active service in the First Anglo-Sikh War. Riddick is a little dismissive of Humbley's work, "Drawn from a contemporary journal, these memoirs focus on his travels throughout Upper India and on his slight participation in the Battle of Sobraon during the First Sikh War Humbley's record offers prolix observations of cities visited, astute descriptions of architecture seen, and evaluations regarding facets of Indian life and their place in the context of Indian history". Humbley's contemporary reviewers were less condescending,: "the impressions of an acute traveller who has studied with enthusiasm the history, languages, and manners of India His account of the campaign is spirited, and his notices of the manners have a freshness only found in the descriptions of a genuine traveller" (The Athenaeum); "interesting notices of India and its people, as observed by an intelligent and educated European observer There is much in the book worthy of being generally known" (Literary Gazette); "Captain Humbley has done well to tell, as a result of his personal experiences, the tale of campaigning in the Punjaub" (United Services Gazette); "Captain Humbley's work is one of the best books that have recently been given to the world on the subject of which it treats" (Observer). A superbly presented and provenanced copy of this highly desirable account. Bruce 4024; Riddick 128 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

???????? [Kawaraban: Per? raik?]. News-sheet: Arrival of Commodore Perry

Edo. 1854.. Black and white Japanese woodblock kawaraban or unauthorised commercial news-sheet of the Edo period featuring a map which depicting the arrival off Uraga of the American fleet during Commodore Perry's second visit, sheet also shows a detail of a ship and details of the Japanese defence in place. Small hole and 3cm long stain, creased from folding, washi paper strip vertically on reverse. A good copy. 38.5 x 57.5cm. Commodore Mathew Perry carried a letter from President Millard Fillmore and came with aim of forcing the Edo government to open Japanese ports for trade. Perry's fleet had first visted Japan on 8th July 1853 at which time he came with four warships including two steam frigates. Perry visited Japan again in February the following year with nine warships. It is clear from the depiction of seven black ships (including three steam frigates) that this kawaraban was published in February 1854, during Perry's second visit as by the 13th February 1854 seven of the nine American ships had arrived. The upper half of the sheet shows the list of warlords assigned for guard duty. Each section gives the location of the warlord's guard duty, the name of the warlord, their family crest, and number of men. On the map itself the name of each warlord with his family crest also appears on the designated location of their coastal guard duty. The lower left being north on this map. The picture of an American steam frigate [probably the flag ship USS Susquehanna] is shown on the lower right with a figure of an American soldier in a separate inset. The short caption for the picture of the ship translates as "Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, named Commodore Perry, under the order of North American President arrived off Uraga [with the fleet]." Kawarabans such as this one were immensely popular and influential. The arrival of the American fleet astonished and deeply shook the population of Edo, who became an eager market for the many kawaraban on this topic. It is believed that there were at least 300 different kurofune kawaraban. The popularity of these sheets of hastily printed news was further encouraged by the attitude the Japanese authorities at both shogunate and local level took to this shocking event. Instead of keeping control of the information they choose not to issue official statements regarding the arrival of Perry and his fleet and so the local population fed only by rumour were desperate for any news they could get. (Anna Wada, Perry in Japan, Brown University). It is difficult for many of us today to imagine the grave effect that the Black Ships had on Japan at the time, however it has been said that the affect has strong similarities with that of 9/11 on the population of the United States in 2001 and the years that have followed. .

Autograph Letter, signed, to Professor Frazer

Philadelphia, 1854. 3-1/2 pp on blue paper. 1 vols. 4to. Fine. 3-1/2 pp on blue paper. 1 vols. 4to. On the Conformity of US and British Coinage. Robert Maskell Patterson (1787-1854) was Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and followed his father's footsteps to become Director of the U.S. Mint from 1835 to 185. He was succeeded there by George Eckert. This letter discusses the desired conformity of the coinage between Great Britain and the United States and it is probably addressed to Professor John Fries Frazer of the University of Pennsylvania. Reading in part: "What I particularily object to is the suggestion thrown out that the U.S. shall adopt the pound sterling as a unit, with new coins as 'subordinates and multiple,' or (as I understand it) with a decimal division of the pound. No unit can be compared for the moment with that which we have at present. It divides, decimally, into a hundred parts, giving us, in such a divison, a coin as small as is desirable in currency … It is a unit which may be struck in silver without being too large, and in gold without being too small. It is a coin knoewn the workld over …".
