Earliest Mormon Newspaper in Utah

Great Salt Lake City, Utah 1854 - Newspaper. Deseret News, No. 23. Great Salt Lake City, Utah. August 17, 1854. Reports proceedings of the Mormon Church, Indian attacks, missionary activities in London, international events such as the Crimean War, and the first laying of stone for the Washington Monument. Front page includes excerpts from History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, later published in full by the Deseret News itself, and a "Discourse" by church leader Heber Kimball. Historical BackgroundThe first prophet and leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons), Joseph Smith, Jr., was murdered in Carthage, Illinois in 1844. A central theme in the early history of the Mormons was the unwillingness of American society to tolerate their presence. Brigham Young acceded to Smith's leadership role as President of the Council of Twelve Apostles, and determined to form a new state in the Mountain West. Young brought the first band of pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley in July, 1847, when Mexico still theoretically ruled the territory. Over the next two decades, more than 70,000 followed. In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo secured American control of the Mountain West. Utah Territory was established as part of the Compromise of 1850. With cooperative labor and cutting-edge irrigation techniques, the Mormons established settlements at the Great Salt Lake and throughout the Mountain West, from Idaho to California to Mexico. Fillmore was the territorial capital between 1850 and 1856. Young called their vast territory "Deseret," a word Joseph Smith had taught meant honeybee. The work of bees provided a metaphor for the cooperative labor necessary for the Mormons' pioneer society to survive.By the order of the Council of Twelve Apostles, William Phelps had purchased a printing press for Deseret, and Howard Egan brought the equipment and supplies in a yoke of wagons in 1849. With this press, Deseret printed its first currency, made possible by the participation of many Mormons in the first year of the gold rush in California. Young and the Mormon political leaders also used the press to print a territorial constitution and publish the earliest laws.Just a year later, in 1850, territorial Secretary of State Willard Richards wrote the prospectus for what he called the Deseret News, the first newspaper of the territory, and published the first issue on June 15. "If Brigham Young was the Washington of Deseret's pioneers," Wendell Ashton writes, "William Richards was the Franklin." Richards' masthead proclaimed "Truth and Liberty" as the values of his paper. His shop was located in the mint building in Great Salt Lake City, even though the capital was at Fillmore until 1856.When Richards died in 1854, Young instructed Albert Carrington to assume the position of editor. In the mid-1850s, conflict between Deseret/Utah and the U.S. government intensified, based in part on mainstream opposition to the Mormon practice of plural marriage (polygamy). In 1857, the U.S. government sent military personnel under future Confederate general Albert S. Johnston-the "Utah Expedition"-to take down Brigham Young, end Mormon rule, and install Alfred Cumming as the new territorial governor. That year, Mormon militia and Paiute Indians killed 120 immigrants from Arkansas in what has become known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Johnston and Young reached an accord whereby Cumming became territorial governor but Young retained de facto power over the territory.ReferencesAshton, Wendell J. Mikrogeologie. Das Erden und Felsen schaffende Wirken des unsichtbar kleinen selbständigen Lebens auf der Erde.

. Leipzig, Leopold Voss, 1854. Folio (44.9 x 32.8 cm), front wrapper pasted on first blank, half-title, title page, dedication leaf, pp. [viii]-xxviii, [1]-374, half-title (to the plates), pp. [1]-31 (index), 41 fine, partly tinted and hand-coloured engraved plates (tissue-guarded) with (multiple) explanatory text leaves. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Gilt lines and title on spine. Marbled endpapers.* A massive work. Weighing over 6.3 kg (1 stone) and sold for the majestic sum of 72 Thaler, it deals with the smallest of all plants and animals, which are the building stones (or, rather, grains) of many mountain ranges. The fine plates, made with the aid of a microscope, mainly show diatoms, radiolarians, and foraminifers in an endless variety, but also a few small mollusks, serpulorbids and, for instance, living tardigrades. Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg (1795-1876) combined a near unsurpassed knowledge of zoology, comparative anatomy, geology, palaeontology and microscopy. Although perhaps better known for his work with Wilhelm Hemprich on the fauna of the Middle East and northeastern Africa, this actually is his most important work. Here, he showed that many rock types actually consist of nothing but the skeletons of unicellular microorganisms. This made him the father of - as the title of this work reads - micro-geology. "Mikrogeologie", however, also contains a wealth of information on micro-organisms in soil, fresh water and seawater from all over the globe. The additional first title page, pasted on the 2nd blank, is probably a cut out of the original (yellow) wrapper. Scattered light foxing to the text, plates clean. Board edges rubbed, otherwise a fine copy of this very rare work. Nissen ZBI, 1245; Ward & Carozzi 724-725 (text and atlas apart)..

Aulacoramphus Cataneorhynchus [The Chestnut Groove-bill Toucanet]

[London: by the Author, 1854. A fine image from the expanded second edition of John Gould's "A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans." "The range of this subspecies extends from the Panama Canal southwards to north Colombia and Venezuela. It differs from R. s. sulfuratus in only one or two details: the bill is about a third shorter, squat and in some birds the red on the tip is less conspicuous; the red band below the yellow breast is broader...They roost with their bills hidden under their feathers and their tails flat over their backs. They utter strange shrill cries like a piglet screaming, but only when they feel threatened." (A. Rutgers, Birds of South America , 1972, p.149) The toucan family is limited to Mexico, Central and South America, and some West Indian islands. The first time that any member of the family was described was by Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes in his "de la natural hystoria de las Indias." (Toledo, 1526, chapter 42) In 1555 Pierre Belon included an illustration of its beak in his "L'Histoire de la nature des oyseaux." (Paris, 1555, p. 184) Andre Thevet first used the name 'Toucan' with a long description, and a woodcut of a whole bird, in his "Singularitez de la France" (Paris, 1555, pp.88-90). The Latin name "Burhynchus" or "Ramphestes" (in reference to the size of the beak) was suggested by Conrad Gesner ("Icones Avium", 1560, p.130), and Linnaeus later adopted Aldrovandus' corrupted form of the latter ("Ramphastos"), which is how the family was still recognized at the time of the publication of the present image. The first edition of Gould's work, published in 1833-1835, represented the first concerted attempt to produce a monograph on the family. The present image is from the second expanded edition, which Gould considered to be a completely separate work: the plates were all re-drawn and the text re-written. Cf. Anker 170; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 101; cf. Nissen IVB 378; cf. Sauer 3; cf. Wood, p. 364; cf. Zimmer, p. 252. Hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and H. C. Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling.

Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below:Book ?A New Method of Learning the French Language embracing both the Analytic and Synthetic Modes of Instruction being a Plain and Practical Way of Acquiring the Art of Reading, Speaking, and Composing French on the plan of Woodbury?s Method with German? by Louis Fasquelle. The Fruits of America, containing richly colored figures and full descriptions of all the choicest varieties cultivated in The United States

C.C. Little & Jas. Brown and Hovey & Co. (Boston), D.Appleton & Co. (New York), Boston and New York 1854 - Original wrappers, titled on the upper cover with integral uncoloured vignette, letterpress prospectus on the lower cover Provenance: George W. Wales (Boston, subscriber, pencilled initials on final part, with note of payment for the final part on 6 January 1854) A rare substantial run of the original parts from the most lavish ante-bellum work on the fruit trees of America: "the first major work executed entirely in chromolithography" (Reese). The 64 varieties featured include pear, apple, cherry, peach, plum and strawberry. The plates were all executed by the Boston firm headed by William Sharp and are accompanied by text which gives the history of each variety, a full description, its growing habit, flower and fruit, and advice on its cultivation. Each entry is headed by cross-references to the other standard European and American books and periodicals. The illustrations generally comprise a sketch of the growing habit of each tree, an outline of the fruit and occasionally an image of the flower. Charles Hovey was born in Cambridge, Mass. in 1810 and with his brother Phineas established a nursery there in 1832. By 1845 his huge collection of fruit trees included a thousand pear trees and four hundred apple trees. A keen plant breeder, he also produced a number of new varieties of Camellia. His literary output brought him to the forefront of horticultural writers with the American Gardeners' Magazine (renamed the Magazine of Horticulture ) which enjoyed great popularity between 1834 and 1868. The present work was intended by Hovey as an international show-case for what American pomologists had achieved, as well as an essential reference guide. It is his masterpiece and originally appeared in parts between 1847 and 1856 and is considered complete in two volumes with 96 plates. Arnold Arboretum/ Harvard p.354; Bennett p.59; BM (NH) II,p.881; Bunyard p.437 & 444; Mass. Horticultural Society p.148; McGrath p.112; Nissen BBI 941; Oak Spring Pomona 61; Reese, American Color Plate Books 20. Sketchbook of Original Art.

      - Sketchbook, signed by the artist "Geer" with her monogram on the front pastedown; oblong 8vo; 6 x 8"; 38 leaves with drawings on 23 leaves them (balance blank); mostly pencil, some crayon, one watercolor of a sunset and its reflection in the sea; original canvas binding which is worn, lacking portions of spine, first signature loose. The drawings and watercolor are fresh and bright. Grace Woodbridge Geer (1854-1938) was a successful portrait painter and teacher. Her paintings are in a number of museums and collections specializing in art by women. A Bostonian, she studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and the Lowell Institute, and with Tarbell, Triscott, Tompkins, and Vonnoh. Primarily a portrait painter, she also produced landscapes and taught art. She was a member of the Copley Society, the National League of American Pen Women and the Artists Guild. The first and earliest drawing in this sketchbook is captioned „A warm day" and dated July 25, 1894; it depicts a woman in a chair with a fan. The latest dated drawing, July 31, 1900, is the seventh from last in the sketchbook is double-page, and is captioned „Up Essex River." There are four other dated sketches, five captioned drawings, and two further double-page views. Among these sketches are studies of woods and trees, several women, coastal and sea-shore views, a portrait of a black man, chimneys, a tower, and Wild Cat Mountain in Jackson, New Hampshire. On the back endpaper is written „Woodbury, Dixon.Prang.Pencil, Eagle drafting pencil - is harder than", and some pencil shadings evidently to test. On the front paste-down endpaper is Geer’s name written large, the initials GW being a monogram. The drawings are charming and show a mature, accomplished artist at work. Fielding, p. 318.
