To her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, and the Allied Armies of France and England. This Military Topographical Map of the Krima Peninsula, constructed, and founded, on the Most Recent Astronomical Observations, verified, and completed from Authentic Military Surveys of the Staff of his Imperial Majesty's Quarter Master General's Department, by Major General Mukhin in the year 1816; by Express Command of Governor General & Aid de Camp Prince Volkonski 2nd. during his Administration of that Country. Is by her Majesty's Permission inscribed by her very Devoted and Faithful Servant Thomas Best Jervis, F.R.S. Major of the Corps of Engineers E.I. Service. The original map was engraved and printed at the Military Topographical Depôt. Attach

London: [For the Compiler,] 1854 - Large engraved wall-map (1305 × 2350 mm); original wash colour to the sea, small geological map as inset with hand-colour, dissected into 40 panels and mounted on two sheets - East and West - of linen. Mounted on the outer panels are four sheets of letterpress providing a digest of useful information about the Russian Empire: "A General Account of the Extent of the Russian Empire "; "Organization of the Military and Naval Forces of Russia "; "Miscellaneous useful Information connected with present Seat of War, and the Powers and States engaged therein"; and "Remarks on the proper Pronunciation of Foreign, and Asiatic Words in particular". Housed in the original black morocco-grained skiver slipcase, lettered "Map of the Crimea" on the front panel. Some mild discolouration to the panels corresponding to the upper, outer edges, but otherwise very good indeed , the case with mild chipping at the opening, neatly restored at the bottom edge. First edition, evidently first state, and uncommon thus. Superbly detailed map of the Crimean Peninsula produced at the outbreak of the war in the region with "the Russian names, title and observations translated or rendered into English by Major Jervis himself, and various useful and important additions also made to the original Russian map" (map text). Subsequently the map was re-issued in various formats, over various imprints - editions were published in Turin, Paris, Brussels - no doubt for Jervis to recoup his costs; and "repurposed", for example in 1856 as a geological map, but is here presented in its original form, as a document of military topographical intelligence. Thomas Best Jervis "was fundamentally a scholar" (Wade, Spies in the Empire: Victorian Military Intelligence, p.23), born in Ceylon in 1792, he was educated at Addiscombe, and in 1813 was commissioned as ensign and posted to the Bombay Engineers. Between 1820 and 1836 he conducted the Trigonometrical and Topographical Survey of South Konkan; in 1821 attached to the British force sent to the Persian Gulf; 1839-41 Superintending Engineer, Northern Province, Bombay; retired from service 1841, but in 1843 established a lithographic press for the production of maps in India. "Making maps was his passion in 1846 he began to outline his reforms and proposals for military cartography, and he wrote to Lord Aberdeen explaining that the War Office needed someone to improve the geographical information available to expeditionary forces. That someone was, of course, Thomas Best Jervis. The war in the Crimea proved Jervis's point. The commanders had no idea of the territory they were encroaching. The setbacks in the early phase gave Jervis the ideal pretext for an audience with the Secretary of State for War [who] could not be persuaded to form an official corps, but permitted Jervis the task of doing the work himself He went to work with alacrity and created a map of the Crimea The dedication and hard work paid off. On 2 February 1855 Lord Panmure finally made the foundation of an intelligence department official. It was to be called the Topographical and Statistical Department. Jervis was to take command" (p.25) Over time the T & S would become the Directorate of Military Intelligence, later the Defence Intelligence Staff. In this context it is interesting to note that Clausewitz was somewhat dismissive of the abilities of General Mukhin - whose work forms the basis of Jervis's map - as Quartermaster-General, because he "was appointed to his post just because he was well-known as a skilled specialist in the arts of topography and map sketching" (quoted in Schimmelpenninck van der Oye & Menning, Reforming the Tsar's Army, p.296).         Forest Life in Ceylon.

London: Hurst and Blackett,, 1854. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spines, covers and spines with ornamental blind stamping, yellow coated endpapers. Contemporary ownership inscriptions at head of titles: "Miss Rawsons, Nidd Hall [North Yorkshire]" and later armorial bookplates of Mountgarret. Spines sunned and rolled and with a little wear to extremities, one or two gatherings a little proud, a few slight tape marks to endpapers otherwise a good set, with the publisher's catalogue at the end of each volume. First edition, scarce, of this fictionalised account of life in Sri Lanka, published hot on the heels of Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) and describing the harsh life of the coffee plantation labourers. "One of the earliest and most enduring images of the early coffee planter and his relations with labourers comes from the caricature in a novel, Forest Life in Ceylon, by William Knighton (1854). Knighton is the originator of the view of plantation labourers as victims... [he] had published a history of Ceylon (1845) while he lived there and published Forest Life in Ceylon later, after he moved to India. Knighton was a schoolmaster and historian and there is no evidence that he ever managed a coffee plantation... [but] the book is not about planting: much of it is a travelogue of historical sites and encounters with animals (mosquitos, leeches, scorpions, centipedes, a snake in the heroine's dress, monkeys who steal bathers clothes, elephants)... The themes of the novel are idealized marital relationships and the corrupting influence of colonialism on British society" (Patrick Peebles, The Plantation Tamils of Ceylon, 2001, pp. 11-12).

Berhnard Dondorf, Frankfurt 1854 - Likely third edition. Set of eight chromolithographed three-dimensional topographic relief maps, each measuring 10 7/16 by 8 5/8 inches [265x219mm], in wooden frames. Each panel in this educational set demonstrates the topography, countries, and major features of a region: Australia and Polynesia, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, North and Middle America with the North Pole, and Germany. Six of the maps also feature an etching showing the traditional people, landscape, and animals of that region, along with a written description. The title panel is illustrated with a world map showing the east and west hemispheres and a legend. Accompanied by a second set of the maps, printed flat and housed in a contemporary wrapper of yellow and black paper. The flat maps make greater use of color to delineate different areas and are partially hand-colored. Drawn and modeled by cartographer A. Ravenstein, and produced by Bernhard Dondorf, a playing card manufacturer based in Frankfurt. Housed in a later wooden box. Wooden frames and flat maps show wear and staining, and some cracking to the peaks of the highest ranges of the topographical maps. A rare survival. (Map frames measure 11 by 9 1/8 inches [278x231mm]. Box measures 11 3/4 by 9 1/2 by 3 1/4 inches [300x242x86mm]).

        Varna from Kafirlu Tepeh.

Day & Sons for Colnaghi London 30 August 1854 - Lithograph with contemporary hand-colour and gum arabic. Sheet: c. 45 x 62 cm. Light marginal soiling, closed tears repaired, most marginal or in the caption, only one very slightly touching the image. Fine panorama of Varna and its bay in the beginning of the Crimean War. In the preferred hand-coloured version. Separately published and rare: we could trace only three copies in public institutions, the only coloured copy being in the British Library; Queen Victoria acquired only the tinted version for the Royal Collection and there is another black-and-white copy in Varna's library. We could not trace any other copy on the market or at auction in recent decades. Britain and France declared war on Russia on 28 March 1854. At the beginning of June the allied troops joined Turkish forces at Varna (nowadays Bulgaria, on the west coast of the Black Sea), with the British fleet being under the command of Vice-admiral Sir James Dundas (commander of the British Royal Navy in the Mediterranean and Black Sea). The fleet included the ship HMS Spitfire (previously engaged in the hydrographic studies in Crete), where Lieutenant Arthur Mansell (1815-90) served under the command of Captain 2nd rank Thomas Spratt. The crew of the HMS Spitfire received an order to map major ports on the West coast of the Black Sea - Burgas, Varna, Balchik and Constanta. While mapping the Varna Bay Lieutenant Mansell made a sketch of Varna from the heights of the Frangensko plateau – "Varna from Kafirlu Tepeh". The encampments of the French and British forces around the town and Lake Devna are visible in the middle distance and to the right hand side. Arthur Lucas Mansell was born on August 20, 1815 on the island of Guernsey. Son of Admiral Sir Thomas Mansell (1777-1858), he studied at Elizabeth College in St. Peter Port and the Royal Navy College in Portsmouth. Mansell joined the Royal Navy in 1831 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1841. In this rank he served as hydrographer and cartographer on the Royal Navy ships in the Mediterranean and the Greek archipelago. On September 29, 1855 Mansell himself was promoted to captain 2nd rank and he commanded HMS Tartarus in 1856, then HMS Firefly in 1860, and the hydrographic ship HMS Hydra in 1863. He retired in 1866 reaching the rank of Vice Admiral in 1888. He died on February 28, 1890 in Halkida (Euboea, Greece). For his participation in the Crimean War Arthur Mansell was awarded the Turkish order "Medjidie " of 5th degree in 1858. Not in Abbey.

Histoire de la Premiere Mission Catholique au vicariate Melanesie

Carcassonne: P. Labau, 1854. First edition. Map, facsimile letter and 23 plates. 8vo. Later quarter morocco over marbled boards, original wrappers bound in. A fine copy. First edition. Map, facsimile letter and 23 plates. 8vo. WITH BEAUTIFUL WOODCUT PLATES. A fine copy of this rare work on the first Catholic mission in Melanesia. Verguet was a missionary of the Societe de Marie whose activities long preceded that of the Missionaires du Sacre-Coeur in Melanesia and the western Pacific. Arriving in Sydney in June 1845, Verguet and his fellow missionaries stayed until November when they travelled to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands (Makira, Santa Isabel etc). Verguet's reports on his interactions with the Aborigines are especially valuable as the local population at the time had almost been wiped out. He visited New Caledonia twice in 1845, as well as New Zealand. His account combines both personal reminscences, correspondence and a history of the mission at Port-de-France. There is also a substantial chapter on New South Wales, including an image of the monument to La Perouse. The work's appeal is enhanced by the series of beautiful woodcut plates illustrating local inhabitants and views. Despite the title-page calling for 20 plates, here we have 23. It also includes a comparative vocabulary of French, English, Tahiti, Hawaii, the Marquesas, Fiji, Aboriginal Australia, Maori, Tonga and Samoa. Verguet's Balade vocabulary is the first printed record of the language. The poem was originally wedded to a copy of Frederick Tennyson's "Days and Hours," (1854) and presented to Charles F. Goss from his pal, A Tennyson, but now stands alone. A few lines: "Most dignified Flunkey beware of the hour/ When Davy shall ask thee with manner so sour,/ If yet thou hast washed with the ordered soft soap/ For if not, you ought to be whipped with a rope." 16 lines in total, followed by "Alf.         De openstelling van Japan voor de vreemde natiën in 1856. Volgens zoowel uitgegevene, als niet uitgegevene bronnen ... Amsterdam, J.D. Sybrandi, 1861. 8vo. With lithographed frontispiece by Hendrik Leonardus van Hoogstraten after Gerard Jacobus Scheurleer, depicting the procession of the Russian embassy to Nagasaki in 1804. Contemporary red half sheepskin.

Cordier, Japonica, col. 555; Hesselink, "333 years of Dutch publications on Japan", V-A2 37. First and only edition of a rare account of the opening of Japan to the West. The work gives a detailed history of the Russian, French, English and American attempts to force Japan to open its ports to foreign ships. After centuries of relative seclusion, during which the Dutch were the only Westerners allowed in Japan, the American commodore Matthew Perry persuaded Japan to sign the Kanagawa Treaty in 1854. This marked the end of the so called sakoku policy and would eventually lead to the overthrow of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1868. The present work was partly based on unpublished sources and gives interesting details on the political relations between Japan and the Netherlands, the reform of the Japanese administration and monetary system, as well as the geography, industry and culture of Japan. Some spotting, part of last free endpaper torn off, binding worn and corners damaged. Overall in good condition.

Map of Oswego County, New York, from actual surveys under the direction of Samuel Geil ... by B.J. Hunter

Philadelphia: Gillett, Matthews, 1854. Engraved map, full original hand-colouring, folding in 36 sections, backed onto linen at a contemporary date, edged with green silk ribbon. A fine copy with beautiful colouring of this important large-scale map of Oswego County, New York Established in 1816, Oswego County occupies 968 square miles of land on the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. The present handsome map was the largest and best of Oswego in the nineteenth century. Each township is individually coloured, with every rural property owner located and identified by name. The map includes fifteen integral town plans (some flanked by listings of local businesses) and eight vignette views. The town plans are for the following: Constantia, Mexico, Sand Bank, Pulaski, Oswego, Cleveland, Washingtonville, Fulton, Central Square, Phoenix, Parish, Scriba, New Haven, Hannibal and Hannibal Centre. It is interesting to note that although the map is constructed by Hunter from surveys produced by Geil, it was registered for copyright (in 1854) by Robert Pearsall Smith. Beginning in 1853, Pearsall Smith had contracted with a number of local surveyors to construct maps of New York counties: this was evidently one of those maps. The map is here presented as a case map, sectioned and linen-backed at a contemporary date, rather than in wall map form, thus preserving the beauty of the original colouring, and without the varnish that tends to be such an unwelcome feature of wall maps of the period. Ristow American Maps & Mapmakers p.392.; not in Rumsey.

Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora and Chihuahua, Connected with the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission, During the Years 1850, '51, '52, and '53

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1854. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes in the original green cloth, rebacked with original spine cloth laid down. Folding tinted lithograph frontispiece in each volume, plus 14 additional tinted lithograph plates, many uncolored engraved plates, woodcut illustrations throughout, and one folding map in rear pocket. Some foxing to plates, occasional other foxing or offestting, but text and illustrations generally clean, map reinforced on the verso, with a bit of chipping only affecting top right corner. Jenkins (Basic Texas Books) describes this as "the most scholarly and scientific description of Southwest Texas of its era," as well as "one of the best American travel books ever written." Bartlett provides a day to day account of the movements of the boundary survey party (scientists, artists, teamsters, surveyors, and a military escort) as they traveled from Indianola, Texas to San Antonio, Fredericksburg, El Paso, San Diego, and back to Corpus Christi. The expedition "was valuable for contributions regarding mines, minerals, and geology in general, and vastly advanced knowledge of the natural history, ethnology, meteorology, and topography of the areas traversed" (Jenkins p. 31). Many early emigrants to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona used Bartlett's account as a guidebook on their trek west. Farquhar 17; Wagner-Camp 234; Graff 198; Howes B-201; Sabin 3746.

Sabin commented on the combined edition: "Of the two works united, it is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivaled interest and beauty, giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America, from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle."         Autograph Letter, signed, to Professor Frazer

Philadelphia 1854 - 3-1/2 pp on blue paper. 1 vols. 4to. On the Conformity of US and British Coinage. Robert Maskell Patterson (1787-1854) was Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and followed his father's footsteps to become Director of the U.S. Mint from 1835 to 185. He was succeeded there by George Eckert. This letter discusses the desired conformity of the coinage between Great Britain and the United States and it is probably addressed to Professor John Fries Frazer of the University of Pennsylvania.Reading in part:"What I particularily object to is the suggestion thrown out that the U.S. shall adopt the pound sterling as a unit, with new coins as 'subordinates and multiple,' or (as I understand it) with a decimal division of the pound. No unit can be compared for the moment with that which we have at present. It divides, decimally, into a hundred parts, giving us, in such a divison, a coin as small as is desirable in currency ? It is a unit which may be struck in silver without being too large, and in gold without being too small. It is a coin knoewn the workld over ?". 3-1/2 pp on blue paper. 1 vols. 4to

Nine Months of a Hawaiian Missionary Newspaper, With the First Report of King Kamehameha III’s Death and Perry’s Mission to Japan

Honolulu, HI 1854 - Newspapers. Bound volume of The Friend (Honolulu, HI) containing 22 consecutive issues dated from Feb 1, 1854 through Oct 25, 1855. "The American Sloop-of-war SARATOGA, Capt. Walker, arrived at this port on the 29th ult., in 25 days from Japan, which is the shortest passage ever made. The S. brings Capt. H.A. Adams, U.S.N., as bearer of despatches to the Government at Washington. The point of interest in this intelligence is the fact that Com. Perry concluded a TREATY OF AMITY AND FRIENDSHIP with the EMPIRE OF JAPAN."The Friend was the mouthpiece of Congregational missionaries and reported everything from important local Hawaiian issues to international news reprinted from eastern sources. The nine months covered here feature a great deal of the news of the day, ranging from war between England and Russia to lots of whaling and maritime news including shipping arrivals and departures, the discovery of new sperm whaling grounds, naval intelligence, all peppered with a liberal dose of good old fashioned conservative proselytizing. This particular volume was sent from Sag Harbor, New York to Thomas Spencer, a Rhode Island sea captain who went native, opening a successful ship's chandlery and marrying a local girl. This volume has the first report of the death of Hawaiian King Kamehameha III, including the order of procession (Jan, 1855 issue) and the first report of the signing of the US-Japan Treaty negotiated by Commander Matthew Perry (May 6, 1854 issue), and an Independence Day celebration (July 6, 1854 issue). The Friend was a local newspaper published from 1843 to 1954. Published by and for the missionaries, it is invaluable as a source of information concerning the activities, experiences, and accomplishments of the 19th-century Congregational missionaries to Hawaii as well as 20th-century figures and the development of the United Church of Christ in Hawaii. Today, The Friend is the newsletter of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ.Thomas Spencer (1815-1884) was a whaling captain out of Warwick, Rhode Island. He was stranded in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and decided to remain there. He opened a very successful ship's chandlery in Honolulu and later purchased property on the "big" island in the village of Hilo. His brothers also joined him in Hawaii. He was a notorious celebrity, well liked by all, and especially supportive of the Hawaiian royal family. He is buried in Oahu. The children of Thomas Spencer and Makaleka (Margaret) Robinson were Thomas Spencer, Jr., and Charles, Lucy, Jennie, Lily, Helen, Margaret, and Kaliko Spencer.
