Patrick Wybrant
[United States of America, circa 1853.]. Original miniature portrait painting by renowned Irish artist Patrick Wybrant, made circa 1850s, signed and dated by the artist, depicting an American woman in a daytime "best" dress, mounted in an oval brooch with copper frame and beveled edge glass, measuring approximately 5,5 x 4,5 x 0,5 cm and weighing 29 grams. The date appears to be 1853, but may also be 1855. Some scratches to glass and fading to frame, otherwise in very good, original condition. Wybrant works are exceedingly scarce, especially those made in America. Most likely originating from New York, Iowa, Montana or Massachusetts, Wybrant worked in these States during his stay in America from 1852 to 1855. In his brilliant and elegant style of painting, Wybrant presents a most charming image of a middle-class woman of North America. Especially characteristic of his works are the engaging large eyes and perfectly toned facial features. Wybrant had a finesse for drawing out the beauty of an everyday person. Note the fan bosom corset of the dress, perfectly pleated and usually structured with whalebone, reducing to a medium point at the waist (enlarged from the 1840s very sharp point), the bodice fitting high on the neck, with a dropped arm and long slender sleeves, the lace collar, all fashionable features in the 1850s. The sitter's gold trim brooch, satin and lace embellishments, and lace day cap suggest that this woman was of upper-middle class. This portrait also illustrates a typical hairstyle of the 1850s. Hair was worn parted in the middle and loosely swept over the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Utagawa Kunisada
A Japanese Woodblock Triptych Print by Toyokuni 3rd. 1853 Edo Period 29 x 14 1/4 ins. (73.7 x 36 cms). The scene depicts a large and luxurious house of assignation or bordello, whatever the polite expression is. The samurai in the foreground is enjoying an al fresco meal with courtesans and musicians. Note the little vignettes in the rooms behind with open doors. On the right is a customer looking a little whiffled with a girl, On the left sheet is a servant on the upper storey carrying a large hibachi on his shoulder while below what looks like an obstreperous customer is being ejected (?). All three sheets have cockling of the vertical edges caused by excess paste on the reverse. The right hand sheet has a small deficiency top right corner on the margin, a small thinned area near the left edge and a neatly repaired hole on the right hand edge just below the artist s signature. The centre sheet has split into two vertical halves caused by a worn fold in its original album, the two halves have been neatly re-attached and touch-in. The left sheet has a small neatly repaired hole on the edge of the artist s signature to the left and an unobtrusive vertical fold crease. [Click Below for Full Description]

With a life of the author by the editor, Robert Southey'. William Cowper (26 November 1731 - 25 April 1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of eighteenth century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him 'the best modern poet', whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak. He was a nephew of the poet Judith Madan. While Cowper found refuge in a fervent evangelical Christianity, the inspiration behind his much-loved hymns, he often experienced doubt and feared that he was doomed to eternal damnation. His religious sentiment and association with John Newton led to mu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Shipwreck]
Bideford: John Wilson Single sided printed broadside, approximately 255mm x 390mm in size, n.d. but probably 1853. Lightly browned and slightly creased, small split to bottom right hand corner with small amount of loss to the same corner, but generally quite bright and clean. Presumably bought in bulk and sold by impoverished ex-sailors, similar to 'unemployed appeals'. Printed by John Wilson of Bideford (fl. 1824-1957), the BBTI notes that he was a printer, bookseller, engraver/etcher, bookbinder and stationer, as well as being a shipowner. The Ocean Queen was wrecked on the Little Mewstone on 26th December 1852 in a force eleven south-westerly gale, she was on a voyage from London to Jamaica carrying a mixed cargo. The wreck quickly broke up, drowning the 14 crew and two passengers on board whose bodies washed up on shore over the following days, The Times noted that "the unfortunate ship totally lost to the eastward of Plymouth on Monday morning during the terrific storm which prevailed from the southward is estimated to burden about 400 tons. It is supposed that the master was endeavouring to make the port of Plymouth from the eastward, and, having caught sight of the breakwater light inside the range of the Great Mewstone, he erroneously considered himself in the fair way for the harbour, and did not discover his error until the ship became entangled on the dangerous reefs connected with the Great and Little Mewstones, or the Slimer's Rocks, inside. In either case she would be immediately dashed to pieces and all her ill-fated crew would perish. A portion of her wreck … [Click Below for Full Description]

A collection of extremely rare booklets printed in Chatham for the exclusive use of the Royal Engineers. In addition to the seven listed above is a 2-page work, 16mo, pasted to the inside of a card cover entitled "New Pontoon Exercise (Lieut.-Colonel Blanchard's)". A Guide for the Young to Success and Happiness, by William W. Pell. This is a very rare book, a first edition from 1853, signed by the author TO ONE OF HIS SIX SONS, on the subject of guiding young people to success and happiness! What a beautiful find, that the author wrote a book with his sons in mind, no doubt, and to have here the very copy that he gave to one of his sons. Amazing. Even better, the book was kept in the family as a treasure and later presented to the author's great-great grandson, Haskell Noyes III. It shows it's age, but the book block is tight. And the pages are all intact, without damage, and with only slight foxing. Gilt edging still shines. Heavily embossed covers, with a tear to the head of the spine. Published by D. Appleton and Company in 1853. Amazon offers a scanned reprint of A Guide for the Young to Success and Happiness, by William W. Pell, with the following description (emphasis added): This book was published before 1923. This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. [British Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints], Manchester & Liverpool, 1853. Vol. 1-15. Octavos [20 - 22 cm] Various period bindings in leather and cloth. Most volumes very good or better. First 15 volumes of the important British Mission periodical complete with 'Awful Assassination' and the supplement to Volume 15 announcing the practice of polygamy "The Millennial Star is the longest running LDS periodical, published continuously for 130 years until it was discontinued in 1970 with the overhaul of all of the LDS magazines. Inaugurated by the Twelve at the beginning of their great mission to England, its first editor was Parley Pratt who labored alone on the magazine until June 1842 when he was joined by a British convert Thomas Ward. Ward became editor and publisher in November 1842, serving until October 1846 when he was replaced by Orson Hyde, president of the British Mission. Thereafter, the British Mission president assumed the editorship of the Star. Initially the Star was a monthly. With the issue of June 15, 1845 (vol. 6, no. 1), it was changed to a semimonthly and continued as such until April 24, 1852 (vol. 14 no. 9) when it was issued weekly. It remained a weekly until, 1943, when it was changed back to a monthly. Even though the Star was published primarily for the members of the Church in England, it is an important record of the progress of the whole of Mormonism, especially of the nineteenth century Utah church. 'But for this publication,' notes H.H. Bancroft, 'it would be impossible to fill the gaps which occur in the record of the M … [Click Below for Full Description]
