L'Oeuvre de Rembrandt reproduit par la photographie. 2 volumes (of 3).

Paris: Gide, 1853-57 - The first book published with illustrations printed directly from albumen glass plates. 87 (of 100) mounted photographs. Lacks the atlas volume containing the remaining 13 prints. Two very large volumes (of three). The atlas volume containing 13 plates is missing from this set. Worn half-leather and cloth, but the bindings and joints are strong. Both volumes foxed. 42.8 x 30.2 cm (page size). Text volume: The pagination is eccentric—sometimes by page, sometimes by leaf. [iv] + 24 pp. + [237] pp. + list of plates and concordance of catalogue numbers [4] pp, The first 24 pp. include a 4-page essay about the publication of this book, an account of Rembrandt, and an inventory of his household effects. The rest is devoted to a list of the plates with a concordance to catalogue numbers from Bartsch and three other sources, plus essays ranging from 1 to 6 pages on each of the prints. Light to heavy foxing throughout; dampstain at upper corner of first portion of book, not affecting text. Plate volume: 87 mounted photographic plates (of 100), printed on extremely thin paper with no varnish or other visible coating. There are no title or text pages. The mounting pages bear the legends "Gide et J. Baudry Editeurs" and "Photog. par Bisson, Fr. - Imp. Lemercier, Paris." The foxing seems somewhat lighter than in the text volume and affects the actual plates less than their mounts. OCLC locates 11 copies worldwide, some of those apparently incomplete. In the US, only the New York Public Library and the Getty show holdings. The book is notable as the first one to be published with plates printed directly from albumen-on-glass negatives. An important book in the history of photography, and a great rarity. These two volumes offered in less-than-ideal condition and priced accordingly. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Published by Orton, New Orleans, Charleston, Baltimore, and Philadelphia 1853 - OTRON, A.R. (attributed) Two Eras in the Life of the Felon Grovenor I. Layton. Who was lynched by the Vigilance Committee, at Sonora, Tuolumne County, California, June 17th, 1852. For Robbery, Murder and Arson, He Having Robbed Three Chilians (sic), Two Men and One Woman, of Ten Thousand Dollars in Gold Dust, at Mormon Gulch, Murdered and Burned Them, Together with Their Cabin, May 28th, 1852 Mayhem in the Mines, Lurid Layton in Pictorial Wraps In the introduction to the 1998 Book Club of California edition, Editor Richard Dillon describes this work as ¿the best ¿written book in terms of seeming authenticity.¿ Popular culture and Gold Field fiction, interesting insights on attitudes toward Chileans in the Gold Rush, a rare gold field law item in collector¿s condition. Baltimore publisher Orton, about whom little seems to be known, published in the 1850¿s murderous accounts resembling this one, all being stories of murders, mayhem, and eventual hangings. It is believed that he in fact wrote most of them and that any number of them such as this work are fiction. In this story, Layton, originally from New York City, descends there into a life of dissipation, gambling, drinking, prostitution and murder before departing for California, where after numerous other similar crimes, he is finally hanged in Sonora. According to Kenneth Johnson in his article, ¿The Quest for Layton,¿ (The Pacific Historian Fall, 1972 pgs, 60-63) this publication was another example of fiction presented as fact, researching the rogue, Johnson could find no record of Layton, or the publisher, Orton. New Orleans, Charleston, Baltimore, and Philadelphia: Published by Orton 1853, Second Edition, (the First Edition was published by the same publishers in 1852), Octavo, 39 pages, Original yellow pictorial wrappers, upper wrapper with title and imprint printed in red, border and portrait of Layton printed in green, lower wrap with lynching scene in green, original stitching.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Krebs"). Dresden, 24. II. 1853.

1853. 1 S. Gr.-4to. Krebs komponierte u. a. die Oper "Agnes Bernauer".

Paris, 1853. xi,310[i.e. 308]pp. Half title. Contemporary half roan and marbled boards, spine gilt, all edges sprinkled brown. Bookplates on front pastedown. Light tanning, otherwise internally clean. Very good. The Daniel Volkmann copy of a lively account of early French participation in the California Gold Rush. The first two-thirds of the book are occupied by the author's voyage to Chile, including his narrative of the journey across the Atlantic. Though somewhat distracted by seasickness and the state of the onboard cuisine, Lambertie manages to discuss a number of the islands passed along the route as well as the nature of the sea life that he encounters. After sailing around Cape Horn, he arrives in Valparaiso, of which he gives a detailed description, and also offers his thoughts on a short sojourn to Santiago. Lambertie arrived in San Francisco in March 1850. He writes at length about life in the city, its attractions, its perceived difficulties, and the attitudes of its American inhabitants towards European immigrants. After witnessing the fire of of May 3, 1850, he decides to venture to the gold fields near Stockton, and then to the diggings at the Mokelumne River. The final two chapter discuss the local Indian populations, before the narrative comes abruptly to an end. An eminently readable chronicle of an adventure in South America and California, in which the author, "Tightly wraps himself in the Romantic mantle, and promises a narrative rich in emotion and personal reaction" - Volkmann. Very scarce, with copies having come up for sale only a handful of times. COWAN, p. 134. HOWES L42. KURUTZ 388. SABIN 38741. VOLKMANN SALE 118 (this copy).

        Bleak House

London: Bradbury and Evans,, 1853. Octavo (202 × 131 mm). Bound in recent blue crushed morocco by Bayntun, titles and decoration to spine gilt, portrait of Dickens tooled in gilt to front cover, and facsimile of his signature to rear cover, all edges and turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers. Etched frontispiece, vignette title-page, and 38 plates (including the 10 "dark" plates) by "Phiz" ( H. K. Browne). Some occasional mild foxing to contents; an excellent copy, attractively bound. First edition, with the first-issue textual points as listed by Smith. H. K. Browne had experimented with the "dark plate" technique in Dombey and Son (1848) but in Bleak House their sombreness added a new tone to the illustration of Dickens's books. "As Dickens's vision of society darkened, Browne adjusted his techniques, pioneering in the use of 'dark plates', where the plate was machine-ruled in parallel grooves which printed an almost uniform tone either before or after the figures and background were hand drawn. These brooding, atmospheric designs harmonized with the gloomy, foggy world of Bleak House and Little Dorrit" (Robert Patten in The Oxford Companion to Charles Dickens, 2011, p. 59).

Archive of 47 Mexican Manuscript and Printed Documents -Laws, Decrees, Circulars- from the Ministry of War and Navy: June - December 1853

[Tacubaya], 1853. First edition. Loose leaves disbound from a later made-up volume. Overall very good.. [77 pp.] on 43 leaves, some folded. Beginning on June 1, 1853, shortly after Santa Anna's return to Mexico as dictator, and ending December 29, 1853, just two weeks after he extended his rule indefinitely and had himself given the title of "most serene highness," these documents cover a period of three leaders in the Ministry of War and Navy: Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil, Juan Suárez y Navarro, and Lino J. Alcorta; all prominent santannistas. Eight are issued by Tornel, the most federalist of Santa Anna's advisors, who fell ill and died in September 1853; ten are issued by Juan Suárez y Navarro, chief administrator of the Ministry of War -the first document noting "por enfermedad de su S. E., J. Suarez Navarro" on September 10th- who coveted the position as Minster of War and Navy, but broke with Santa Anna just three weeks later when Lino J. Alcorta was appointed minister in his stead, and who issued the remaining twenty- nine documents. Thirteen of the documents are printed; 34 are in manuscript, either originals or perhaps manuscripts reproduced by an early form heliography. Similar documents were described by Dr. W. Michael Mathes in a 2004 auction catalogue as "an early form of holography [i.e. heliography] using a concentrated beam of sunlight to transfer text, a process employed in Mexico during a brief period between 1850 and 1856 for short runs and to avoid printing delays and costs. Lithography was impractical for such short-run imprints, as it was extraordinarily costly, took weeks, and presented difficulties in reproducing the writer's hand." In a few instances the date on the manuscript documents differs from that of the later publication. The documents are primarily concerned with bringing professionalism and discipline to the army (and the nation), stemming desertions and bolstering the draft (though exempting indigenous peoples), punishing theft and corruption, building fortifications and other public works, increasing weaponry, and creating militias. OCLC locates no copies of any of these individual documents, though some of the printed items are held at Berkeley, and except for the auction noted above, we could find no listings, catalogue holdings, or auction records for items reproduced in a similar fashion to those included. Detailed list upon request.

        Brooklyn, N.Y. 1854

New York: Smith, Fern & Co., 1853 - A RARE AND SPLENDID VIEW OF EARLY BROOKLYN Engraved by Wellstood & Peters. 29 ½ x 43 ½ inches visible, 33 ¼ x 47 ½ inches framed. Engraving on paper (minor stain on lower left corner, faint discolorations extending into image). Title printed on lower margin, annotation in cursive below respectfully dedicating this work to the citizens of Brooklyn. This rare early view of Brooklyn, New York is based on a painting by Benjamin Franklin Smith, Jr. It is from the vantage point of the West (approximately the area of the Wall Street Pier) and shows a vibrant East River scene, teeming with sailboats and a few early steam vessels, including the paddle wheel passenger steamer Empire State. The delicate ripples of the river and silvery cloud formations in the sky contribute pleasing atmospheric elements to the scene. In the very foreground, human figures in period dress are visible aboard boats and ships of various sizes. A rowboat heads toward shore alongside a steamship, showcasing the coexistence of industrial and pre-industrial modes of transport and signifying a moment of great transition and transformation in the history of this iconic city. A meticulously rendered cityscape of buildings and churches is visible on the other side of the river, and stretches splendidly across the horizon. The land of Brooklyn first became populated by Europeans in the 17th century, when Dutch settlers named the small town on the East River shore of Long Island "Breuckelen." It grew to be a full-fledged city in the 19th century, when industrial development and economic activity rose due to the city’s proximity to the shipping center of the East River shore. For much of the 19th century, Brooklyn was known as the 3rd most populous city in the United States. In the 1883 poem "The New Colossus," inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, Emma Lazarus called Brooklyn a "twin city" of New York, and it officially became a part of New York City in 1898. Today, Brooklyn is the most populous of the five boroughs of New York and a center of art, culture, music, and business, whose vibrancy and diversity rival that of its longtime neighbor and partner, Manhattan island. From 1848 to 1856, the four Smith brothers (Francis Smith, George Warren Smith, David Clifford Smith, and Benjamin Franklin Smith) issued a series of large folio views of cities from throughout the eastern half of America. Benjamin Franklin Smith, Jr., the youngest of the brothers, was the "artist of the family" and responsible for drawing six of the views, while collaborating with J.W. Hill on six others (Reps, 206). Originally from Maine, the Smith brothers established an independent publishing firm specializing in city views at around 1849, after traveling and jointly publishing views with the artist Edwin Whitefield for several years. This separation from Whitefield was likely driven by the clear artistic talent of Benjamin Franklin Smith, who quickly proved himself able to compete with the more experienced Whitefield. According to scholar John Reps, B.F. Smith "possessed artistic skills of a very high order, clearly surpassing those of Whitefield" (Reps, 207). On the subject of the Smith brothers’ series of city views, Reps remarks: "large and imposing in size, splendidly drawn.the Smith brothers’ views achieved a standard that equalled or surpassed the best work of its kind" (Reps 207).         Coloured Illustrations of British Birds, and Their Eggs.

London: S. & J. Bentley, Wilson, and Fley for G. Willis, and (vol. VII) by S. & J. Bentley and Henry Fley for Willis and Sotheran, 1853-1857. - 7 vols, 8vo (211 x 125mm), pp. I: iv, 230; II: iv, 233, [1 (imprint)]; III: iv, 240; IV: iv, 215, [1 (imprint)]; V: iv, 192; VI: iv, 185, [1 (blank)]; VII: vi, [2 (errata, blank)], 1-132, 135-206 (A2 and A3 reversed, p. 65 misnumbered '56', pagination skips from 132 to 135); 435 hand-coloured lithographic plates (of which 8 black and white) by Meÿer and family, all plates facing blank ll.; occasional very light foxing; ?publisher's red straight-grained morocco elaborately gilt, boards with gilt double-ruled and ornamental frames, spine gilt decorated in 6 compartments between raised bands, directly lettered in 2, edges and turn-ins with ornamental gilt-tooled rolls, all edges gilt; extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, spines a bit darkened, endpapers lightly foxed, overall a very fine, well-preserved set with very fresh plates.Second octavo edition. Meÿer's British Birds is, '[w]ith the possible exception of Lord Lilford's Birds, [which was published some fifty years later] [ ] the finest and most complete atlas of portraits of British avifauna (with their eggs) ever published' (Wood). Meÿer was a British artist of Dutch extraction aiming to represent birds in a natural, life-like manner. His characteristically wonderfully detailed, accurate and attractive plates resulted from a collaboration of the Meÿer family, headed by Meÿer's wife, 'an accomplished artist, [who] not only executed such drawings as were not made by her husband, but drew many of the plates upon the stones' (Mullens and Swann, p. 399), with colouring done by their children. Mrs Meÿer is known to have visited the gardens of the Zoological Society to study birds, while the eggs were collected by the family or sent by friends. Encouraged by the success of the folio, plates-only edition (Illustrations of British Birds, 1835-50), Meÿer planned a second series, Coloured Illustrations of British Birds, which was also to be published in parts, but now in tandem with Yarrell's History of British Birds. 'Yarrell's work had many delightful wood engravings as text-figures. Meyer's idea was to supplement these with hand-coloured lithographs. The almost inevitable result was that the parts after a very short time did not synchronise in their publication dates and soon became two entirely separate works'. This first octavo edition of Coloured Illustrations (1842-1850) was the first to contain letterpress text (4 or 5 pages per species) to make up for its separation from Yarrell's History. For the colouring Meÿer's son Charles 'invented a system of stencilling the colouring of the bird figures and the eggs, thus keeping the lines clean and also speeding up the tedious colouring process for his brothers and sisters' (Christina Jackson, Bird Illustrators: Some Artists in Early Lithography. London, 1975, pp. 60-61).Due to adjustments as the series progressed, and as for the folio edition, the later editions contain a varying number of plates, some of which were redrawn or their colouring altered. This second octavo edition has, among other things, 'an extra plate of eggs which were unknown when the previous edition was published' (Wood). This set is more elaborately illustrated than many extant copies, including that listed by Wood: vol. I of this set has one additional plate of eggs and three further black-and-white plates, including the plate of the Golden Eagle's beak (referred to on p. 139 but bound in towards the beginning of the volume, beside the plate of the Golden Eagle). This set is further bound in an elaborate morocco-gilt binding which we have seen in other sets on the market in the past years, and which is therefore likely to be the publisher's binding.Mullens and Swann, p. 404; Wood, p. 462.         Kleinere Schriften von Alexander von Humboldt. Erster Band.

In two parts. Text and Atlas. Text: 8vo(21.5 x 13.1 cm). viii, 475 pp., six large, folding tables. Contemporary half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with four raised bands and gilt title. Floral patterned endpapers. Atlas: oblong 4to (20.2 x 30.9 cm). 12 fine, tinted (one hand-coloured) engraved plates. Original quarter cloth over printed boards.= This is the start of an intended series of geological, volcanological and physical contributions by this eminent German geologist, but it remained all that was published. The present works deal mainly with the volcanos of Mexico and part of the Andes. However, also included is the work titled "Untersuchungen über die eudiometrischen Mittel und über das Verhältnis der wesentliche Bestandtheile der Atmosphäre" written together with the great French physicist and chemist J. L. Gay-Lussac, as well as a few smaller papers, and a new introduction by Von Humboldt. The fine plates show the volcanoes in Equador and Mexico. Two plates are maps, one plate is coloured, containing a comparative outline of the highest mountain ranges in Europe, Asia, and South America, indicating their climate zones. Rare. The text is rather foxed, due to the quality of the paper but the atlas with its beautiful tinted views, is clean. Sabin 33.725; Ward and Carozzi, 1154.

The genera of Recent Mollusca; arranged according to their organization. [Atlas]

London, John van Voorst, [1853]-1858. Thick 8vo. 138 plates of which most are hand-coloured. Contemporary half calf with gilt title on the spines.= Rare hand-coloured edition of this standard work on molluscs which is the source of many new, valid names and of type-designations. Uncoloured copies are rather common, but the last coloured copy on sale is probably the one listed in Junk's "Conchology. Old and rare books list 52" (published ca. 1986). As noted in that catalogue, the fine colouring is confined mainly to the living animals. There are an unusual high number of living specimens figured. Many living animals were drawn by Arthur Adams while on board the "Samarang" as the ship's surgeon and zoologist. Under the command of Edward Belcher, H.M.S. Samarang explored the eastern seas from 1843 to1846. A few neatly handwritten taxonomical annotations on the explanatory leaves, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 25.
