        1. Mapa Historico Pintoresco Moderno de la Isla De Cuba.

      Hamburg/ Havana 1853 - Chromolithographs finished with hand color. A few mended marginal splits, mat burn to outer margins, else excellent condition. Two of the visually richest images of Cuba printed in the 19th century. Both works are bordered by numerous illustrations of scenes from daily life, of historic events and important structures. These were based on the very important early views produced in Cuba by its first lithographer, F. Mialhe. So influential were these views throughout the Americas and Europe that Emilio Cueto asserts: ¿THE image which the enlightened public of the nineteenth century had of Cuba was the one conveyed by Mialhe¿--p. 6. Among the subjects of the illustrations are the cultivation of tobacco, a formal dance, a cock fight, a hurricane at its height, various regional domiciles, etc. The plan of Havana includes a view of the city from the harbor. The genesis of these works involved one of the most bizarre cases of graphic piracy known. May, a Havana merchant, sent without authorization a number of Mialhe¿s original views to Germany to be re-lithographed. These were then sent back to Cuba, where May sold them at a price that undercut Mialhe¿s. Although Mialhe brought suit, the case was settled to May¿s advantage because Mialhe failed to follow the exact procedures of the then newly enacted copyright laws. These particular works are, however, more ¿original¿ than May¿s other piracies of Mialhe because Mialhe never prepared a map. The views surrounding the map, however, were taken directly from Mialhe.         The Alphabet Annotated and Hints Upon Slip-Slop by an Old Etonian For Youth and Adults in Doggerel Verse

      London: Ackermann & Co., 1853. First Edition. Wraps, with custom made cloth box. Very Good. Large 4to. 33 by 25 cm. 64 pp. Every page is framed with hand-colored vignettes containing fanciful, amusing and/or evocative pictures, plus an elaborately hand-colored illustrated title page. 62 pages in all have extensive hand-coloring. While there is verse or text on every page, the illustrated portion is never less than half the page and generally two-thirds or more, and so the book might deserve to be regarded as a color plate book, although purists might dispute this. And while on each page there are discrete images that do not necessarily relate to one another, there is also border ornamentation that surrounds and incorporates everything, providing a visual coherence to each page and often adjoining pages. The border ornamentation, moreover, is different on each page; there is nothing slapdash, routinized or prosaic about it. This ornamentation draws heavily from the neo-Gothic so popular during the Victorian era, but lightens it up as well to suit the whimsical contents of this book. Note that this title was also issued in an uncolored version, which is easier to come by. Scarce, with the only holder located on OCLC being the British Library. Original wrappers, with front cover detached neatly along joint. Ex-library, with only minor, non-bothersome evidence of having been in a library -- a small patch of paper not lifted on rear wrap where was probably once attached a library slip, a round blind stamp impression on title and small inked stamp of "Withdrawn" beside this. Otherwise, clean, bright, handsome. The box housing the book is solid and attractive as well.

Bookplate on front pastedown; contemporary ownership inscription on flyleaf. Light scattered foxing and soiling. About very good. An interesting American color plate book of medical natural history, each section treating a different animal and its useful medicinal qualities or productions. Among the creatures described and illustrated with a colored plate are the sponge, the hen, the ox and cow, the honey bee, the sperm whale, the hog, bloodsucking leeches, the snail, the coral, the rattlesnake, and others.       Derby - John and Charles Mozley, 1853 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A nice set of this Victorian guide to the Christian faith, in full calf bindings. 'To be read on Sundays and chief festivals, thoughout the year, as they are directed by her table of proper lessons. To which are prefixed, prefaces, pointing out the design of the respective lessons'. Complete in two volumes. William Wogan (1678 24 January 1758) was a religious writer, the son of Ethelred Wogan, the Rector of Gumfreston and Vicar of Penally, Pembroke. Born in Gumfreston, Wogan was known for his piety, and was on intimate terms with many of the evangelical leaders of the time such as George Whitefield and John Wesley. His manuscript correspondence with Sir Robert Southwell was purchased by the British Museum. In his retirement at Ealing he wrote a large number of religious works. Condition: In full calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with some slight rubbing and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Some foxing to the endpapers and pages adjacent to the tissue-guards but otherwise generally clean. Ink signature of Anna French to the first blank of Volume II, dated 1854. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        Six Autograph Letters Signed (one unsigned) to a variety of correspondents, 8 pages 8vo and 4to, integral blanks, Paris and Melun, 5 October 1829 to 7 April 1853.

      - One letter on the headed paper of the Interior Ministry's 'Travaux de Tombeau de l'Empereur Napoléon'. With a pencil sketch for a house with a round pepperpot tower at each side. The recipients include a minister and a fellow-architect, one letter illustrated with drawings for a barn with stables.Some of the letters relate to work he is doing at Nanteau [sur Essonne] for the comte de La Tour du Pin, another discusses with a lady acquaintance of M. La Tour du Pin her plans for a house. A letter addressed to a Minister concerns the building in which the fireworks will be stored for the 1 May display, in another he explains that permission to visit to Dome of the Invalides can only be granted by the Governor of the Invalides now the work on [Napoleon's] tomb is finished, and another consists of an annotated list of artisans with their addresses for the Fêtes de Juillet in 1849.

Lightly browned, spines a touch sunned, but a very handsome set First edition of this highly successful and immensely scurrilous best-seller exposing the abuses of the "trade in lunacy", the hero, Alfred Hardie, being improperly confined in a series of private mad-houses. In the fairly transparent guise of Dr. Wycherley, Reade savagely burlesques Dr. John Conolly, whose conduct had been exposed in several court cases as questionable at the very least: "his transparent rationalizations, and the convenient congruence between his beliefs and his self-interest [his] pretensions to gentlemanly status are mocked, and his vaunted psychological acumen exposed as a pious fraud" (Scull, "A Victorian Alienist: John Conolly" in Bynum, Porter & Shepherd, The Anatomy of Madness, I).       London: Tilt and Bogue, 1835-1853 - Quintessentially Cruikshank, the 19 issues of The Comic Almanack are a high spot of British humorous periodicals. In 1840, Thackeray recalled that the first issue showed "a great deal of comic power, and Cruikshank's designs were so admirable, that the 'Almanack' at once became a vast favourite with the public and has remained so ever since". Patten, in whose biography of the artist the above quote appears, states that circulation of the work approached twenty thousand copies, and that for the nine years of its existence it was Cruikshank's primary source of regular income. Runs of the Almanac are increasingly rare, and the set we offer is a particularly handsome one (CRUIKSHANK, GEORGE) First edition. 19 vols. bound in nine vols., Sm. 8vo. This fear it was--a fear like this, as I have often thought " The second side commences, "I have said that he would not have appeared to any capturing ship as standing in the situation of prisoner amongst the pirates, nor was he such in the sense of being confined. He moved about, when on board ship, in freedom " and finishes, " Much, therefore, it was that he owed to this accomplishment.       Cincinnati ; Chicago : From the American Hebrew Pub. House, the Bloch Pub. and Print. Co., 1853 [1870s?] - Original Full Leather, 16mo, [6], iii-xii, 1243 pages. 17 cm. Title in Hebrew at head of title. The scarce Chicago Bloch edition, retaining the copyright page date of 1853, but probably published in the 1870s given the inclusion of the "Advertisement to the London Edition" (which appeared in 1865, with 7 holdings in OCLC,) and its mid-19th Century calf binding. Bloch’s first office in Chicago dates to the 1870s, and Bloch did also publish an 1884 edition, but, unlike our copy, it lists the 1884 date and only Cincinnati (not Chicago, as this copy does) and contains 1236 pages (not 1243 as ours does). A Bloch publication of Leeser’s bible could almost certainly not have occurred before Leeser’s death in 1868, given the enmity between the Leader of American Orthodoxy and the Reform-oriented publishing house owned by Isaac M. Wise’ brother-in-law, Edward Bloch. Leeser, famously, had printed an "anonymous attack on Wise signed ‘Lawyers’ in the pages of his Occident shortly after the appearance of Minhag Amerika in 1857; this anti-Reform rejoinder singled out Bloch & Co. for allegedly keeping its store open on the Jewish Sabbath and closing it on Sunday, the Christian Sabbath" (Singerman). In our Bloch copy, the copyright is still held by Isaac Leeser; It was not until 1888 that "his [Bloch’s] firm obtained the copyright of this popular and frequently reprinted landmark text." OCLC lists only 2 holdings of the Chicago Bloch [1853] edition (Andrews University in Michigan and the Community of Christ library in Missouri), both in the Midwest, perhaps reflecting Bloch’s still-Midwestern orientation at the time. Indeed, not many years later, Bloch left Chicago completely and moved its second headquarters to New York. This edition not listed in Singerman nor in Goldman. The last four volumes encompass the Middle Ages through the reign of Henry IV. The interesting plates illustrate moments in the lives of prostitutes. Paul Lacroix (1806-1884), best known under the pseudonym of P.L. Jacob, wrote novels as well as works of history and culture, including a history of Napoleon III, the life of Tsar Nicholas I, and (with Ferdinand Sere), the five-volume @Le Moyen Age et la Renaissance (1847).         Coinage of the British Empire. An Outline of the Progress of the Coinage in Great Britain and her Dependencies, from the Earliest Period to the Present Time.

      London: Nathaniel Cooke, Milford House, Strand, 1854 [but 1853] - First Edition (bound with the original deluxe gothic papier-mâché boards simulating carved ebony). Small quarto - about 10" x 7" (25cm x 18cm). Recased using the original black pierced papier-mâché boards with later red paper backing laid down on later red paper-covered boards with a later brown leather spine with gilt lettering. Plain cream endpapers (the original marbled endpapers were not retained). All edges gilt. 160pp. (plates not included in the pagination). Although not stated, the text was printed in Great Britain by Vizetelly, the color plates were printed in France by Engelmann, and the papier-mâché boards were crafted by J. Jackson and Son (using fibrous plaster and paper pulp reinforced with metal). Humphreys notes in his Preface: "The success that attended the publication of my first numismatic work, an unpretending little volume, called 'The Coins of England,' of which six distinct editions were called for within four years, and which is now again out of print, has induced me to undertake a more extended and complete work upon the same subject." Illustrated by Humphreys with 24 plates (12 plates chromolithographed in gold, silver, copper, and black and 12 plates in black and white), and one black & white in-text illustration. The color plates are bound with plate IX as the frontispiece and the remainder throughout the text, the black & white plates are bound at the end (the plate numbering only runs to XXIII as there is an additional plate between XVI and XVII, called XVI 1/2 or XVI-A. The binding design to the upper and lower boards also by Humphreys. In Fair+ Condition - the papier mâché boards have some chips or small pieces missing along the edges, the lower board has two corners with small pieces broken off and missing, some cracking (mainly in the borders), some rubbing/dulling to the boards, there is some creaking when handling the book due to some gaps between the papier mâché and the boards (when originally bound there were no boards under the papier mâché just the red paper backing and then marbled endpapers), the face of the spine is flaked and worn with loss of gilt, there are several one inch tears along the front outer joint but holding fine, the spine protrudes a bit from the boards and the text block is set back a bit from the fore-edge of the boards due to the way the book was recased (originally the edges of the spine were about flush with the edges of the boards), some dampstaining to upper corner of rear endpapers (doesn't intrude onto the text pages), the text is bound a bit too tight and the free endpapers have one inch tabs along the gutters facing the text block which make it a bit difficult to open the pages at front and back widely, the title page has closed tears, browning, and creasing along edges (as though previously detached), sporadic light foxing throughout, browning to page edges, text pages opposite color plates have browning offset from the plates (as usual), plate V has several closed tears, browning, and creasing along edges (as though previously detached), plate XII has a short pencil notation in the margin (noting a color error in the plate), one text leaf has browning and wear along edges (as though previously detached), it appears as though the frontispiece may have been bound (or laid) in at page 98 for some time as the pages show the offset browning from a plate), while the title page does not show the offset browning, the Preface page does have offset browning but it appears to be from a different plate facing it at some point, all plates are present however and bound in at their appropriate chapter (except plate IX which is bound in as the frontispiece).         47 Upper Canada Road Maintenance manuscript receipts collection (Mono Township)

      Mono Township, UC 1853-56, Mono - 47 small pieces of legal signed document for road maintenance and repairs from 1853- 1856 in Mono Township.These 47 documents vary in size and condition with an average size of 7" x 3 " and average condition good however a number of old water stains to sides. Virtually all are docketed with a number and or description and many are signed by the person receiving payment.A fascinating collection of pre-confederation documents relating to the building and improved roads infrastructure in Upper Canada, specifically Mono Townships which is just north of Orangeville. , Some background on road maintenance receipts such as these 1853-63 ones issued primarily relating in Mono, Upper Canada. These Mono Township receipts were for the regular form of "statute labour" performed by able bodied men acting under an overseer (ie, for the township.) The Upper Canadian government assisted with the cost of improving some of the major roads (eg. Yonge Street, Dundas Street, Kingston Rd) as early as 1833, but that was only after a direct request for assistance from the city of Toronto and York Township. Otherwise, roads within the townships. Road maintenance was done by all able bodied men (aged 16-60) within the township. And the township was divided up into "road divisions," each one being the responsibility of an "overseer of highways" for that division. He was appointed/elected to the post at the first township meeting in the New Year, and would have served for a year. It was the responsibility of the overseer to make sure that all men performed their "statute labor" on the roads. He would keep track of the men, and if any didn't perform their statute labour, the overseer was empowered to fine them for non-performance of their duties. The overseer would be paid a modest fee for his work, and he could also charge certain expenses to the township (eg. gravel, bridge repairs, blacksmithing work &c.) For example, some receipts offered are pay receipts for a road overseer, as well as expenses being paid to three men (for goods or services not specified), and for a bailiff or deputy to summon a jury. Starting in the 1840s, government legislation permitted the formation of "joint stock companies." So starting around 1845 and after, private companies were formed such as the "Yorkville and Vaughan Plank Road Company," which were legally allowed to collect tolls on roads. It was expected that a certain amount of the money collected would be used for paving and maintaining the road, and any amount over and above what was spent would be profits for the company. The companies would be audited every so often, to ensure that they maintained the roads in exchange for the tolls collected. The Cottage Tollgate in Toronto, now a museum, is an example of toll collecting. The tolls were unpopular, and by the 1890s the companies and their tollgates were fast disappearing from the landscape. Around 1914-17, the province of Ontario introduced its "good roads" legislation, after which time almost all of the private toll road companies folded up and went out of business. A few fox marks, mostly on text leaves, with the plates generally clean and brightly colored. Overall a very good set, in uniform contemporary bindings. An early issue of Michaux and Nuttall's classic work of American natural history. Originally published as separate works, these titles merged into a regularly produced combined work of six volumes beginning in 1851. The Nuttall appears to have the same collation as the first edition of 1842-49. The Michaux has virtually the same collation as the 1850/51 and 1852 issues which precede it. The beautiful color plates were printed in Paris, many after Redouté. The Nuttall contains 121 plates, as in the first issue of 1842/46/49. The Michaux contains 156 color plates, as called for on the titlepage, six more plates than in previous issues. This publication is the most important work relating to American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of two of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th-century America, François André Michaux and Thomas Nuttall. The beautifully executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. Sabin says of the work, "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America, and those of his father, from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures, who aided them in their work and travels. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter, Redouté, and his associate, Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting the work were destroyed by fire, but the copper plates were separately stored and thus survived to be employed in a later combined edition issued by Rice and Hart of Philadelphia Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day, travelling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in the 1820s and '30s to gather botanical specimens. His work, designed to supplement that of Michaux, covers eastern species overlooked by the Frenchman, and new species Nuttall had gathered in the Midwest and West. His work was first published in Philadelphia in 1842-49. The more up-to-date method of using colored lithographs for the plates was employed in the Nuttall volumes, since the publisher did not have engraved plates in stock, as was the case with the Michaux work. Kolorierter Originalumschlag, 26 handkolorierte Lithographien, 1 mehrfach gefaltete kolorierte Karte von Kuba und 1 gefalteter kolorierter Plan von Havanna. Neuer Halblederband mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel und Rückenvergoldung auf fünf Bünden. In Halbleinwandschuber Palau 167989. - Sabin 17748. - Cueto: Miahlhe's Colonial Cuba S. 73 - 120. - Das berühmteste Ansichtenwerk Cubas Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Von Cueto als 'Album I' bezeichnet der als Drucker eine Hamburger Druckerei C. Adler vermutet. Von der vorliegenden Ausgabe lässt sich aber kein Exemplar in einer deutschen Bibliothek nachweisen. Der ursprünglich aus Bordeaux stammende Mialhe war Schüler von François Edouard Picot (s. Bénézit 7,382). Er wanderte nach Cuba aus, wo er als Lehrer an der Kunstakademie wirkte. Daneben veröffentlichte er 3 Ansichtenwerke mit Veduten und Szenen aus dem Volksleben, die schnell populär wurden und etliche Nachahmer fanden. Hier eine von 2 Nachdruckausgaben nach der 1848 bei Marquier in La Havanna erschienenen Originalausgabe, die 28 Tafeln umfasste. Die Ansichten in der Originalausgabe waren nicht koloriert. Neben der vorliegenden erschien eine weitere Ausgabe zur gleichen Zeit in Berlin bei Storch und Kramer in Chromolithographie. Unser Exemplar mit dem Verlegernamen B. May y Ca. auf dem miteingebundenen Originalumschlag. Einige Tafeln mit dem Monogramm E.Y. oder der Signatur C. Beer. Der ursprünglich 1849 von W.S. Barnard gezeichnete Stadtplan von Havanna hier mit dem Datum von 1853. Nur in der vorliegenden Ausgabe sind die Tafeln von Hand koloriert. Die Tafeln sind gegenüber der chromolithographierten Ausgabe im fein aquarelliertem Kolorit. 18 von 26 Tafeln sind mit Titeln in Spanisch, Englisch und Deutsch versehen, 8 nur in Spanisch. Gegenüber der Ausgabe mit 27 Tafeln fehlen die Tafeln 25-27: Corrida de toro - Vista de una casa de caldera - Vista de una vega de tabaco. Zusätzlich sind in der vorliegenden Ausgabe vorhanden: Vista del Fondo de la Bahia de La Habana - Sagua la Grande. Der gefaltete kolorierte Plan von La Habana (Plangrösse 33x26 cm) ist umgeben von 14 kolorierten Ansichten der Stadt, (Blattgrösse 46x59). Die kolorierte Karte (34x25 cm) mit einer farbigen Kartusche und 16 kleinen Ansichten. Der hier eingebundene Originalumschlag wird von Emilio Cueto in seinem Werkverzeichnis der Lithografien Mialhés nicht erwähnt. - Vereinzelt schwach stockfleckig. Die Karte und der Plan mit alt hinterlegtem Einriss und im Falz verstärkt. - The most famous book of views of Cuba of the middle of the 19th century. Originary of Bordeaux, Mialhe was a scholar of François Edouard Picot (s. Bénézit 7,382). He expatriated himself to Cuba and worked there as a teacher in the Cuban Liceo Literario y Artístico. He also published three lithographically- illustrated works with veduta and scenes of everyday life, which became quickly very popular and were therefore often copied. This work is one of two reprints of the original edition printed after 1848 by Marquier in Havana, and which contained 29 plates. The views of the original edition were not coloured. Next to this edition, another one was printed at the same time in Berlin by Storch und Kramer with chromolithographs. Our copy has the editors name B. May y Ca. on the bound original wrapper. Some plates carry the monogram E.Y. or a signature C. Bur. The city map of Havana originally drawn by W.S. Barnard in 1849 is dated here from 1853. This is the only copy with hand-coloured plates. The plates have a fine aquarell colouring in comparison to the chromolithographs. 18 of 26 plates have titles in Spanish, English and German, 8 only in Spanish. In comparison with the edition with 27 plates, plates 25-27 are missing: Corrida de toro - Vista de una casa de caldera - Vista de una vega de tabaco. Contains the first printing of Melville's classic "Bartleby the Scrivener" as well as a lengthy article on Melville by George W. Curtis and three chapters from Thoreau's EXCURSION TO CANADA. Also contains engraved views of New York City from lost daguerreotypes and articles on the Mormons, Hawaii, and Cuba, illustrated with woodcuts. Bartleby gets our vote as the Original Wall Street "Occupier.

        The Asiatic Mediterranean, and its Australian Port: the settlement of Port Flinders, and the Province of Albert, in the Gulf of Carpentaria

      London: Printed for the Author, 26 August, 1853. Small octavo, frontispiece and two other plates, two folding maps; very good in the original red cloth, embossed in gilt to front, neatly rebacked. Flinders, King and Stokes adapted for a new settlement. Uncommon: one of the marvellous works of imagination relating to inland Australia (one thinks of works such as Maslen's Friend of Australia or Fox's Account of an Expedition to the Interior of New Holland). The proposal is for a new northern port to be established at the Albert River, at the south-eastern reach of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The tone of Saunders' work is neatly captured on the world map: the proposed province of "Albert" takes in most of modern-day Queensland and Northern Territory, the entire region marked the "Plains of Promise". The map of "Albert" is excellent, as are the three very fine views of scenes on the Albert River. Throughout, the debt to the accounts of Flinders, King, Leichhardt and Stokes is apparent. Saunders also dwells on the importance of the region for trade with south-east Asia, and most particularly Singapore. The book was, as is noted on the title-page, printed by the author "for official and private information only", but is not as dramatically scarce as that might suggest: it is, nonetheless, not often offered for sale.

Publisherís stiff paper binding of white and blue, embossed with cameos on both covers, including an 18th century couple dancing, four ladies with fancy coiffures (repeated on each cover). There is a central cameo which is hand-colored and decorated with fabric, gilt and colors of a girl holding a rose. Faint dampstains affecting spine and small portion of front cover. 222p, the text printed on fine white paper with decorative borders, & finely etched plates interspersed. Occasional foxing in spots. Cloth clamshell box. This is a ìstrennaî gift book popular in the mid-19th century. Mainly for women, the anthology includes Italian poetry and travel stories. This volume if of interest to English romantics. It contains Marcello Mazzoniís ìDue scene di un dramma inedito intitolato Byron a Venezia.î Gift books were published annually across Europe and in Boston and New York. Italian examples are rare, especially in this condition. Provenance: Paul Edward Chevalier (sold at Christies, 1990).       V. Bartholemew, London 1853 - An "Atmospheric View" of Concord New Hampshire The state capitol of New Hampshire, Concord, located on the west bank of the Merrimac River, about seventy miles northwest of Boston, is depicted in this excellent lithograph by M. & N. Hanhart, one of the top printmakers of nineteenth century London. The print is based on a painting made in 1852 by the artist George Harvey. "The Merrimac dominates the foreground of this charming view, where one of the large log rafts making its way down river bears two female travelers and their dog. Beyond them, nearer the shore, a catboat is shared by three passengers. In the distance loom four cupolas. The first, beginning at the left, belongs to the Unitarian Church, erected in 1829 and destroyed by fire in in 1854, just a year before the lithograph was published. The next is part of the First Baptist Church, erected in 1824-1825 and later remodeled. Moving further to the right, the next cupola belongs to the South Congregational Church, erected in 1836-1837 and destroyed by fire in 1859. The large cupola at the right is atop the State House.Just below the houses grouped on the hill to the left, a train with three passenger cars chugs along." (Deák). George Harvey (1800-1878), an artist of British birth who immigrated to the United States in 1828, often indicated after his name (as he does here) that he was an Associate of the National Academy of Design in New York. Harvey specialized in landscape painting and miniatures. While maintaining a presence in the London art world, Harvey established a home and studio near Hastings-on-Hudson, near New York City, where he conceived the idea of painting a series of "atmospheric views" of the northeast. "He is known for his particular attention to the shifting subtleties in color caused by outdoor atmospheric change" (Deák), much in evidence in this lithograph. A fine print of a quintessential American scene.
