The Ichnology of Annandale or Illustrations of Footmarks Impressed on the New Red Sandstone of Corncockle Muir.

W.H. Lizars, Edinburgh 1853 - (vi) pp., 17 pp., (6) pp., with chromolithographed title, vignette view of Corncockle Muir Quarry, vignette ¿Rain Drops¿ (in sandstone), geological section, and 13 chromolithographed plates, of which 11 are double-page. Bound in original blue cloth. Rebacked with black cloth, new black cloth corners, endpapers renewed. Presentation inscription, stamp and release stamp of the Edinburgh Nature Conservancy on front flyleaf, occasional minor spotting, otherwise a nice copy. Rare first edition presentation copy of a work on fossilized reptile footprints found in the New Red Sandstone formations of Corncockle Muir, located near Templand in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The naturalist William Jardine (1800-74) here records many specimens he found on the family estate, as well as items collected from other nearby quarries. This lavishly printed work ¿ its illustrations of specimens reproduced at life size ¿ is said to have been published in fewer than 140 copies (Jackson, p. 112). The fine, hard sandstone of Corncockle Muir was much quarried in the nineteenth century as an excellent building material, and during this work numerous fossilized footprints were found beginning in 1837. Jardine focused on the fossils excavated from the Permian formation at Corncockle Muir, reopening in 1847 a quarry that had worked to a depth of over 200 feet. Jardine collected specimens from Corncockle and other sites, making intricate descriptions and drawings. In the present work he presents his discoveries of three new genera and five new species. After his death, the fossil collection was sold by his son for £150 to the Edinburgh Museum, where it is still housed. The Corncockle Quarry sandstone provided building material for Victorian row houses in Glasgow and Edinburgh and was shipped across the Atlantic as a favored material in constructing the brownstones of New York City. The quarry at Corncockle is still active today. The present volume is a presentation copy, carrying the inscription ¿Presented by Sir William Jardine to Charles Ratcliff¿; Colonel Ratliff (d. 1885) was an assistant to Jardine who married his youngest daughter shortly after the naturalist¿s death. *Christine Jackson, William Jardine, a Life in Natural History, pp 107-113.         THE FRUITS OF AMERICA, CONTAINING RICHLY COLORED FIGURES, AND DESCRIPTIONS OF ALL THE CHOICEST VARIETIES CULTIVATED IN THE UNITED STATES

New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1853. viii,100pp. plus forty-eight chromolithographic plates. Frontispiece portrait. Quarto. Contemporary black morocco, ornate gilt covers and spine, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Slight wear to hinges. Minor foxing in text and on plates. Overall very good, in a lavish binding. Second edition of the most beautiful American work on fruits in the 19th century, after the first bound edition of the previous year. As in the earlier edition, the chromolithographs herein were executed by the firm of William Sharp of Boston. Hovey was a nurseryman of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a leading writer on horticultural topics. The book was originally issued in parts from 1847 to 1856. The forty-eight varieties of fruit described include twenty-eight pears, seven apples, five cherries, three peaches, three plums, and two strawberries. Hovey describes the work in terms of national prestige: "There is a national pride, too, which I feel in the publication of a work like this; and that is, that the delicious fruits which have been produced in our own country, many of them surpassed by none of foreign growth...will be here beautifully depicted...." The chromolithographs are some of the finest produced in America to this time. This second, New York, edition is far rarer than the first. SABIN 33206. OAK SPRING POMONA 61 (another ed).         BILL Of LADING For The CLIPPER SHIP "CARRIER PIGEON". Boston, Jan 19th 1853.; Nath'l Winsor, Jr.'s Line of Packets for San Francisco

Boston, 1853. 1st printing thus. SIGNED by Winsor. Bit of age-toning, and signs of light wear. Straight-pin holes to left of form. Faint fold lines. Very Good.. Pre-printed form, single sheet. Red & yellow flag vignette to upper left of sheet. Oblong format: 7-1/8" x 9-7/8" The Carrier Pigeon was an American clipper ship that was launched in the fall of 1852 from Bath, Maine. Leaving Boston on January 28, 1853, the Carrier Pigeon began her maiden voyage bound for San Francisco. She was a commercial ship, her mission to deliver general merchandise. Her track took her around Cape Horn, and up the western coast. On June 6, 1853, the clipper was sighted at Santa Cruz, California, about seventy nautical miles south of San Francisco. The cool California Current offshore, enhanced by upwelling of cold sub-surface waters, often creates summer fog near the coast, and June 6, 1853, was no exception. As night approached, so did the fog. The captain of the Carrier Pigeon, Azariah Doane, believed that the ship was far from shore, and so he gave the order to sail eastward toward the shore. In few minutes the clipper hit the rocky bottom. With heavy waves rocking the helpless clipper from side to side, the hull soon opened to the incoming tide. After seven feet of cold Pacific water rushed into the ship, the captain and the crew had just a few moments to escape with their lives. Because the ship was wrecked only 500 feet from shore, all the members of the crew were able to reach the shore safely. News of the wreck reached San Francisco the next day, and two vessels subsequently came to the aid of the crew, while concurrently attempting to salvage the Carrier Pigeon's cargo. No crew lost their life, and the cargo salvage operation was modestly successful. [Wiki]. Winsor a prominent Boston businessman, whose shipbuilding & clipper business was one of the Northeast's most successful, lasting from the 1840s until 1907. Winsor's son, Nathaniel Winsor III, one of the first to organize a line of ships sailing from Boston to San Francisco, profiting from the burgeoning demand for merchadise occasioned by the California Gold Rush. Here we offer a rare Bill of Lading from this ill-fated voyage. M. & H. Pierce paid $238 to have transported "Five Cases Carriages" and "Two Carriage Poles" with the lading's boilerplate stipulating the items "are to be delivered in like good order and condition, at the aforesaid Port of San Francisco, at ship's tackles, (the dangter of the Seas and Fire only excepted,) unto M. & H. Pierce or assigns" Ship & cargo were insured for $195,000. Good thing.

        Shakespeare Society Publications [general title]

London: Printed for the Shakespeare Society and to be Had of W. Skeffington, 1853, 1853. First editions, later issue. This set lacks publication numbers 8 and 48. Lowndes, pages 2341-42. Condition overall is very good.. 46 (of 48) publications bound in 19 (of 20) volumes, 8vo, contemporary and later half green morocco, marbled paper boards, gilt lettering. The aim of the Shakespeare Society, founded in 1840 by John Payne Collier, was to publish works about Shakespeare and his time. After th winding-up of the Society, the original sheets of its Publications were re-issued with new general title-pages dated 1853. This set consists of volumes 1-16, 18 and 19 of the 1853 re-issue, and volume 17 pt. 1 in its original 1848 issue. The bindings are mixed: volumes 1-13, 15-16 and 19 are bound in contemporary half green morocco, with marbled boards, with the motto of the Kitson and Nelson families ("Palmam qui meruit ferat") on the front panel, and the bookplates of the New York real estate tycoon Ogden Goelet (1851-97) , whose library was sold in five sales between 1935 and 1954, and the Hollywood theatre director Jerry D. Melton (1933-2002). All but one of these (volume 10) has been almost invisibly re-spined. Volume 14 of the re-issue has been supplied: it too is bound in contemporary half morocco and marbled boards, but has been rebacked in cloth - the original morocco spine (laid down) is almost uniform with the rest of the set. A copy of the original 1848 issue of no.39 (uncut, some browning, and a trifle taller than other volumes in the set), which forms vol.17 pt. 1 of the re-issue, has been added and bound to match - see above.

THE TWENTY-FOUR BOOKS OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, CAREFULLY TRANSLATED ACCORDING TO THE MASSORETIC TEXT, AFTER THE BEST JEWISH AUTHORITIES. TORAH, NEVI'IM VE-KHETUVIM.

Cincinnati ; Chicago : From the American Hebrew Pub. House, the Bloch Pub. and Print. Co, 1853 [1870s?]. Original Full Leather, 16mo, [6], iii-xii, 1243 pages. 17 cm. Title in Hebrew at head of title. The scarce Chicago Bloch edition, retaining the copyright page date of 1853, but probably published in the 1870s given the inclusion of the ?Advertisement to the London Edition" (which appeared in 1865, with 7 holdings in OCLC,) and its mid-19th Century calf binding. Bloch?s first office in Chicago dates to the 1870s, and Bloch did also publish an 1884 edition, but, unlike our copy, it lists the 1884 date and only Cincinnati (not Chicago, as this copy does) and contains 1236 pages (not 1243 as ours does). A Bloch publication of Leeser?s bible could almost certainly not have occurred before Leeser?s death in 1868, given the enmity between the Leader of American Orthodoxy and the Reform-oriented publishing house owned by Isaac M. Wise? brother-in-law, Edward Bloch. Leeser, famously, had printed an ?anonymous attack on Wise signed ?Lawyers? in the pages of his Occident shortly after the appearance of Minhag Amerika in 1857; this anti-Reform rejoinder singled out Bloch & Co. for allegedly keeping its store open on the Jewish Sabbath and closing it on Sunday, the Christian Sabbath? (Singerman). In our Bloch copy, the copyright is still held by Isaac Leeser; It was not until 1888 that ?his [Bloch?s] firm obtained the copyright of this popular and frequently reprinted landmark text.? OCLC lists only 2 holdings of the Chicago Bloch [1853] edition (Andrews University in Michigan and the Community of Christ library in Missouri), both in the Midwest, perhaps reflecting Bloch?s still-Midwestern orientation at the time. Indeed, not many years later, Bloch left Chicago completely and moved its second headquarters to New York. This edition not listed in Singerman nor in Goldman. Edgewear to leather boards and many pages. Spine professionally rebacked. Good Condition thus. (AMR-38-23)

[ON SATURN] Sur les Dimensions des Anneaux de Saturne // Memoires de L'Academie Imperiale des Sciences de Saint-Petersbourg. Sixieme Serie. Sciences Mathematique et Physiques. Tome V. [i.e. The Dimensions of the Rings of Saturn // Memoirs of Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. 6 series. Mathematics and Physics. Vol. 5]

St. Petersburg: de L'Imprimerie de L'Academie Imperiale des Sciences, 1853. 403-548, [2] pp. 4vo. Original blue wrappers with a decorative border on the covers. Uncut. A very good copy. The front cover detached from the spine, tears on the spine and covers, two spots on the end cover. Rare. First and only edition. Report on discovering and measuring the Saturn rings. Otto Vasilevich Struve (1819-1905) was a Russian astronomer, a leading member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, second in the unique astronomical dynasty which lasted for more than a century. He started working with his father at Pulkovo Observatory and headed it between 1862 and 1889. The American astronomer Benjamin Gould said that Struve made Pulkovo Observatory "the astronomical capital of the world". Struve discovered more than 500 double stars, observed planets and their satellites, comets and nebulae. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1850. Among his many achievements he also measured the rings of Saturn and discovered (in parallel with other researchers and almost at the same time) the dark inner ring of Saturn. Struve also devised the ring naming system still used today. It is interesting that Otto was the first scientist of the Struve family to visit the United States. The visit served several purposes, not only providing an opportunity to purchase optics for the new 30-inch telescope in Pulkovo, but more significantly it was a part of a long-term Russia-US astronomy partnership during the 19th century. As a result of Struve's initiative, two US astronomers were appointed Foreign Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
