THE MINER'S PROGRESS; OR, SCENES IN THE LIFE OF A CALIFORNIA MINER. BEING A SERIES OF HUMOROUS ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE "UPS AND DOWNS" OF A GOLD DIGGER IN PURSUIT OF HIS "PILE."

Sacramento: Published at the Daily Union Office, 1853. 13pp. (eleven of them with crudely handcolored illustrations) followed by [2]pp. of advertisements. Original pictorial salmon-colored wrappers. Wrappers stained and quite worn, with several tears at edges. Bookplate on inner front wrapper, early ownership signature at head of front wrapper. Text leaves with some tears at edges, but none affecting text or illustrations. A worn but overall good copy. In a cloth chemise and slipcase. A classic of Gold Rush satire, being among the earliest published works of humorist Alonzo Delano, and iconic Gold Rush artist Charles Nahl. The project was initiated by the SACRAMENTO UNION, which hired Delano and Nahl to produce the work, which also appeared in the July 4, 1853 edition of the paper. Delano, who often wrote under the name "Old Block," emphasizes the loneliness, exhaustion, and dashed hopes of the miner, and Nahl's sketches perfectly reinforce the tone of the work. The story ends well, however, with the miner striking gold and returning home to his loving family in Maine. Charles Nahl and his brother, Arthur, came to the United States from Germany in 1849, and arrived in California the following year. Charles, the "Cruikshank of California," was the superior artist, and his illustrations of Gold Rush scenes are highly lauded. Hamilton says that Nahl's illustrations "depicting the life of the miner in the days of the gold rush are extraordinarily good...he was an excellent interpreter of the humor and pathos of early California life." The ads tout the several publications of the SACRAMENTO UNION. Kurutz notes blue-green pictorial wrappers, while ours are salmon-colored. A "third edition" also appeared in 1853, which presumes that there was also a second edition, though Kurutz never located one. KURUTZ 179a. COWAN, p.163. GREENWOOD 382. ROCQ 6043. STREETER SALE 2736.         Bleak House

London: Bradbury and Evans,, 1853. Octavo (207 x 127 mm). Early 20th century green half morocco by Bayntun, decorative gilt spine, green linen sides, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, with the wrappers from part X bound in at the end. Etched frontispiece, vignette title-page, and 38 plates (including the 10 "dark" plates) by "Phiz" ( H. K. Browne). Armorial bookplate of Robert P. Dudley. Spine lightly sunned. A very good clean copy, bound from the original parts (showing stab holes in the gutter), with the half-title. First edition, with the first-issue textual points as listed by Smith. H. K. Browne had experimented with the "dark plate" technique in Dombey and Son (1848) but in Bleak House their sombreness added a new tone to the illustration of Dickens's books. "As Dickens's vision of society darkened, Browne adjusted his techniques, pioneering in the use of 'dark plates', where the plate was machine-ruled in parallel grooves which printed an almost uniform tone either before or after the figures and background were hand drawn. These brooding, atmospheric designs harmonized with the gloomy, foggy world of Bleak House and Little Dorrit" (Robert Patten in The Oxford Companion to Charles Dickens, 2011, p. 59).

[COLLECTION OF MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS RELATING TO A LITTLE KNOWN INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT IN THE CHINCHA ISLANDS NEAR PERU, INVOLVING UNITED STATES VESSELS OF THE PACIFIC SQUADRON, AN AMERICAN MERCHANT, THE PERUVIAN GOVERNMENT, AND BRITISH CHARGÉS D'AFFAIRES AT LIMA AND SANTIAGO]

1853. Approximately [35]pp. Folio lettersheets. Overall condition is quite good. This small collection of manuscript documents reveals the details of a fascinating international incident between the American navy and the Peruvian government. According to one of the documents, a group of American shipmasters at the Chincha Islands complained about ill treatment by the local Peruvian commandante. Among other things, an American sailor was put in irons for killing a pelican. Ultimately the tiff was smoothed over by British officials. Most of the documents are contemporary manuscript copies of letters between various American naval officers, British Rear Admiral Fairfax Moresby, and the British chargés d'affaires at Lima and Santiago. Among the Americans making complaints was Theodorus Bailey, commander of the Defiance and a distinguished naval officer of the Pacific Squadron. A few of the documents concern a related or perhaps different incident in which the cargo of an American merchant named Cunningham was seized by Peruvian authorities. In the 1850s the Chincha Islands provided a valuable source of natural fertilizer, a commerce monopolized by the Peruvian government. An interesting example of gunboat diplomacy and the edgy relationship between Latin American countries and the U.S. in the period.

        Broadside. Begins: "A los venezolanos.

New-York Folio. [1] p.. 21 October 1853 In this address to his fellow Venezuelans, Paéz (1790–1873), the exiled general and former president — who would serve as president yet again in the early 1860s— denies any part in revolutionary conspiracies against the regime of General José Gregorio Monagas (1798–1858), then ruling Venezuela. Páez probably drew upon the pen of D. Antonio José de Irisarri (1786–1868) for the composition of this publication. Handsomely printed on a single sheet, in two columns. Rare: We fail to trace this piece of exile writing via WorldCat, NUC Pre-1956, or Palau. In good/very good condition, save for short tears to margins. Good Venezuelan item.

SUNDRY AMUSEMENTS IN THE MINES [caption title]

San Francisco: Lith. & Published by Quirot & Co., 1853. Pictorial letter sheet on grey paper, 8 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches. With blank conjugate leaf attached. Minor edge and corner wear. Manuscript numbering in upper right. Rear blank leaf with minor soiling, dampstaining on lower right of both leaves, slightly affecting image. About very good. A pictoral letter sheet presenting a sardonic view of the diversions available to miners in California, depicted in four woodcut vignettes, each showing two men engaged in various activities. The first image, "A Sundays Amusements," shows the two miners washing their clothes in a stream and hanging them in a nearby tree; in the second, "A Daily Pleasure," the scowling men cook dinner in a log cabin while a dog watches on; the third piece, "Occupation for Rainy Days," depicts the dishevelled figures in their tent as they set about repairing boots and pants; in the final vignette, "A Pleasant Surprise," the two miners open the flaps of their tent to discover a bear inside, warming its hands at their fire. The letter is undated, but the lithographer C. Quirot operated his own print shop under the name of Quirot & Co. in San Francisco from 1851 to 1853. The lithographers Britton & Rey took over Quirot's press, and reused several of his stones, including this one, but this is the first edition. BAIRD, CALIFORNIA'S PICTORIAL LETTER SHEETS 268.       La Roche-en-Brenil u.a., 1853-1861. Zus. 17 S., 8°. Hildburghausen: Bibliographisches Institut ; New York : Meyer o.J. California

New York: J. H. Colton, 1853. - Single sheet, (17 ¼ x 13 ¼ inches). Publisher's Advertisement leaf mounted on inside front cover. Fine folding lithographed map with original hand color in full (some separation along folds, one or two spots). Original publisher's blindstamped red cloth gilt (a bit rubbed). Provenance: With library deaccession stamp of Union Theological Seminary Library to verso. With bookplate of American Bible Society (with stamp indicating deaccession). From the important cartographical library of Warren Heckrotte, his sale, Rare Cartography, Exploration and Voyages, Part II, December 3, 2015, Lot 119. First edition. With large inset of the City of San Francisco at upper right; 1853 census printed (or inkstamped?) on verso of map. First issue of J.H. Colton's little pocket map of California. Wheat notes that "This was probably the best-known map of California in the eastern states during the 'fifties. It was republished annually for a time, with little or no change." Warren Heckrotte describes various issues of the map in his notes: "This was reissued in 1854 as a separate, and also used to illustrate Capon's California. In 1855, it was copyrighted anew and was included in Colton's Atlas. The 1855 map was issued as a separate. The only difference I find between my 1853 issue and the 1854 issue in my copy of Capron, aside from different paper and some differences in color, is that at Nevada City, the 1853 issue has only 'Nevada'; the 1854 issue adds 'City.'" Mr. Heckrotte also states that "this map appears to be rare." Between 1831 and 1890, the Colton firm dominated American map publishing, and their atlases were the finest produced in the U.S. during the nineteenth century. The company was founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893), who had no formal training in geography or cartography; he began by purchasing copyrights of maps prepared by other individuals or companies, and his principal role was to manage the production and distribution of the maps. His first maps were drawn by the esteemed cartographer David H. Burr in the 1830s. By the 1850s Colton was also publishing guidebooks, atlases and immigrant and railroad maps. The firm was renamed G.W. & C.B. Colton in the 1860s when Colton was succeeded by his sons, George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901) and Charles B. Colton (c. 1831-1916). It is believed that George Colton compiled the company's 1855 Atlas of the World and served thereafter as the firm's principal map compiler, cartographer and engraver. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the more expensive international market rather than the cheap domestic one. For this reason, all maps were printed with steel plates, rather than as wax engravings, which was the most common method used at the time. OCLC/WorldCat locates eight copies of the map.         Colton's Map of the United States of America.

New York: J.H. Colton & Co., , 1853. Folding map, [printed on thin banknote paper, 35 x 61.5 cm (13 1/2" x 24"), plus decorative boarder, folding into original embossed red cloth folder, lettered in gilt, Colton advertisement on top pastedown. Folder is 5 3/4" x 3 1/2". Very slight edgewear, very small fold tear, some darkening where attached, map bright and clean overall and near fine. J. H. Colton (1800-1893), founded the Colton map publishing company, and the Colton family published atlases for over 30 years. Colton's Atlas of the World was first published in 1855 in a large two-volume set. In 1857 it became Colton's General Atlas, and Colton's sons, George Woolworth and Charles B. would take over. However, during the 1850s, J. H. Colton was probably the most important U.S. geographic publisher. This is a handsome map of the United States that provides a good deal of detail on the Western Territories, including Oregon, Utah, Washington and New Mexico. According to Wheat the map shows explorations for Pacific Railroads. However, Wheat only refers to a later 1855 edition, which appears to be the same map. Interestingly, in that same year (1853) Colton appears to have also published a much larger wall map of the United States. Wheat Vols. 3 & 4. Osher Map Library. # 106020
