In it Marx gives a further elaboration of all the basic tenets of historical materialism - the theory of the class struggle and proletarian revolution, the state and the dictatorship of the proletariat. Of extremely great importance is the conclusion which Marx arrived at on the question of the attitude of the proletariat to the bourgeois state. He says, - … [Click Below for Full Description]

STOWE, Harriet Beecher
John P. Jewett. 1852 1st ed Uncle Tom’s Cabin Beecher Stowe Slavery Abolition Civil War 2v Set “A moral battle cry for freedom!” – Langston Hughes on Uncle Tom’s Cabin. No other work of literature helped lay the groundwork for the American Civil War quite like Harriet Beecher Stowe’s ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin.’ In turn, many historians have ‘credited’ this novel with being the contributing factor to the Civil War. This incredible story portrays slave families being torn apart through being sold and resold by slave masters. This story had a polarizing reaction. Over 300,000 of the first edition had to be printed, but remarkably was banned in most of the American South! Even still, it was the most-popular and highest-selling book in the 19th-century and is on the Grolier American 100! A charming edition set of an American classic that “helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War!” (Will Kaufman) Item number: #9945 Price: $950 STOWE, Harriet Beecher Uncle Tom's cabin: a tale of life among the lowly Boston: John P. Robert Armstrong], [Washington, DC, 1852. Original dark brown cloth with gilt title and blind stamped decoration, quarto (9.5 x 11.5 inches), drop-title with list of "sketches", 58 maps and plans of varying sizes, many folded, on 57 sheets (complete). The Coast Survey of 1851 included the first detailed survey of the west coast of North America. The greatly increased sea traffic generated by the California gold rush and the increasing number of wrecks in the region emphasized the need for accurate charts of the coast. A young George Davidson (1825-1911) was the head of the survey party. This was his first major surveying job and a precursor to his later "Coast Pilots." Davidson went on to found the geography department at the University of California, Berkeley. Sketch "J No. 2 - Mare Island Straits, California" shows the "Site of Vallejo, Seat of Government of California" - a very short-lived status for the new city founded by Gen. Mariano Vallejo with the intention of providing the new state with a capital city. The California legislature spent less than a year in Vallejo before moving on to Benicia and ultimately Sacramento. Moderate rubbing to covers, shallow dent at center fore-edge of front board, some toning to map sheets, occasional short tears to folds, Sketch #35 - a tri-fold of tables of Tides at Cat Island Louisiana with 3" x 1" section on upper margin of right panel torn away, overall much nicer than usually found and about very good [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1852. In great condition for a used book. Has been read but has no easily noticeable damage to the cover, dust jackets should be included, all pages are present and undamaged (no creases or tears), minimal underlining/highlighting of text (perhaps on a few pages), no writing in margins, very minimal identifying marks inside cover (including an inscription), very minimal wear and tear. Hardcover Cloth. First Edition. 1852. 39 pp. A major cultural high-point in the Anti-Slavery literature. "I Must Mourn" is regarded as one of the greatest American speeches ever from this esteemed orator and clearly demonstrated that words have power. SHEA, JOHN GILMARY
Clinton Hall, New York: Redfield, 1852. FIRST EDITION. 233 x 150 mm. (9 1/8 x 5 7/8"). lxxx, 268 pp. FIRST EDITION. Handsome red morocco by Zaehnsdorf (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with three straight gilt frames and a wavy frame with floral cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments with gilt scrolls and gilt lettering, all edges gilt. Frontispiece facsimile letter, fold-out facsimile of the original hand-drawn map of the Mississippi or Conception River by Father Marquette tipped in at rear. Howes S-357; Sabin 80002. Light one-inch abrasion on lower board, contents with a handful of small rust spots and negligible blemishes, but in excellent condition inside and out. Notable for its attention to detail and accuracy, the present work contains several accounts of early North American expeditions taken directly from primary sources, including the narratives of Marquette, Allouez, Membré, Hennepin, and Anastase Douay. John Gilmary Shea (1824-92) is best remembered as a historian of Roman Catholicism in America--the Catholic Encyclopedia lauds him as "practically a pioneer in this field"--but he was also very interested in Native American missions and the early exploration of America, as the present volume attests. Sabin (quoting Field) notes that "Beside the valuable relations, which afford us the first accounts of the Indian tribes which inhabited the vast tract of territory, from the St. Lawrence to the Mississippi, Mr. Shea has added notes, biographical sketches, and bibliographical accounts of works upon aboriginal history, which are scarcely to be overe … [Click Below for Full Description]

A complete set with matching numbers doesn't come across very often so...GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!!! 1852 UNCLE TOM'SCABIN === COMPLETE SET === This auction is for an original 1852 set of "UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and published by John P. Jewett & Company. You get both VOLUME 1 & 2 making it a COMPLETE SET! YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET OF BOOKS!!! It is dominated by a single theme: the evil and immorality of slavery. Stowe emphasizes the horrors of slavery on almost every page of the novel while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as the enslavement of fellow human beings. Upon publication, Uncle Tom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery (who created a number of books in response to the novel) while the book elicited praise from abolitionists. Southern reactions ranged from forcing a bookseller in Mobile, Alabama to leave town for selling the novel to sending threatening letters to Stowe herself (including a package containing a slave's severed ear). The novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the United States, so much so in the latter case that the novel intensified the sectional conflict leading to the American Civil War. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark- … [Click Below for Full Description]

1852. In nice condition - the binding and spine are strong. There's some normal wear to the edges of the covers, but overall the guild still looks really nice. The rear flyleaf is missing, but overall in solid shape. There is a name pasted on the back of the title page in pencil - "Wm Daniels". This is a nice/solid copy of Voice of Warning. This copy is intriguing because it used to be owned by Eliza R. Snow. She wrote her name in pencil on the flyleaf page, but then someone foolishly erased it. I've included pictures.
