Boydell, John. (Shakespeare, William).
[New York: Shearjashub Spooner, 1852]. Elephant folio, 23 x28 , in plain brown library binding. The first American edition, printed from Boydells' original plates purchased and restored by the American publisher. This oversized edition has finely detailed impressions, the engravings having been brightened by re-cutting worn areas. 25 plates, numbers 76-80. Background: John Boydell was a London bookseller and print-seller. In 1786, he and a group of associates commissioned paintings of scenes from Shakespeare's plays by the best artists of the period. Boydell then opened The Shakespeare Gallery in 1789 to exhibit the painting collection. The first set of printed engravings based on the works was issued in 1791. A nine-volume folio edition was published in 1802, and in 1803 Boydell printed a two-volume elephant folio. In 1852, American Publisher Spooner published 100 of the drawings in two volumes. [This partial set was apparently broken into four volumes some time afterward.] Plates are from King Richard III, Henry VIII, Coriolanus, Julius Caesar, Anthony & Cleopatra, Timon of Athens, Titus Andronicus, Troilus and Cressida, Cymbeline, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Othello. Condition: The plates are all in crisp, clean, fine condition. Occasionally a small damp-stain or bit of foxing in the margin not affecting the image. One plate [96, Hamlet] has some greater foxing extending into the image. Each plate has a facing page of text; similarly in very-good fine condition. However, paper guards between each text and plate is sometimes torn. Each plate has the library s blind stam … [Click Below for Full Description]

DISRAELI, Benjamin 1804-1881. Statesman and Novelist
Eight Autograph Leters Signed (?B. Disraeli? (3), ?D.? (3), and ?Beaconsfield? (2) ), to Sir Edward Kerrison, Conservative M.P. for Eye and then East Suffolk 1852-67.30 pages 8vo in all, all but two on black edged paper, written from Hughenden Manor, Downing Street, Carlton Club, and George Street, 3 December 1864 - 11 March 1880. Together with two Autograph Letters Signed (probably retained copies) from Kerrison to Disraeli; the retained copy of an Autograph Letter Signed from Kerrison to Lord Derby, 1858 (finding fault with Disraeli's leadership of the Conservative Party); two Autograph Letters Signed from Lord Derby to Kerrison, 1858 and 1866. the earlier letter vehemently defending Disraeli from Kerrison's criticism, an Autograph Letter Signed from the politician Stafford Northcote to Kerrison, and two incomplete letters to Kerrison, evidently from a fellow M.P. From the papers of Sir Edward Kerrison (1821-1886), a backbench Conservative M.P.for fifteen years. The son of a popular and wealthy general who had been wounded at Waterloo, Kerrison mixed in the highest political and social circles, and was evidently, at the period of his correspondence with Disraeli, on very friendly terms with him despite his earlier hostility. Disraeli's eight letters to Kerrison begin in 1864, when in opposition to Lord Palmerston's Liberal government, and continue until 1880, when he was Prime Minister. They concern mainly the problems of party politics, anxieties about losing seats, the franchise, and the importance of local influence. As usual with Disraeli, he expresses himself warmly … [Click Below for Full Description]

Collins, Wilkie
London: Richard Bentley, 1852. Hardcover. 8vo. THE FIRST EDITION of Collins's scarce second novel. This is Collins's second full length novel and his first set in contemporary times. This novel of first love, intrigue, and betrayal was considered "sensational" by many, and it had mixed reviews, with some referring to it as "revolting." In his dedication he writes that he "has not hesitated to violate the conventionalities of sentimental fiction." In later editions, he did shorten the text and tone down the violence. "In Basil, he found his true métier as an expert in mystery, suspense, and crime" (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Three volumes bound in two. Bound in three quarter tan calf with marbled paper covered boards, with red leather labels with gilt titles to the spines of both volumes. There is some rubbing and scuffing to leather. Gilt tooling to compartments on spine, some of which has been rubbed. Full marbled edges and marbled end pages. These books remain quite attractive, though there is minor rubbing to the leather along the joints and minor bumping to the corners. There is minor foxing to the first and last few pages of both volumes but otherwise the interior is very bright and clean. LIT/092906. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

William Shakespeare
Hartford CT: This auction is for a fabulous antique book - William Shakspeare's Complete Works - Dramatic and Poetic! I cannot find a similar book online. What is particularly unusual about this book is the intricately gilded cover. The book was published by Silas Andrus and Son in 1852. It spells Shakespeare as "Shakspeare." The text is "from the corrected copy of the late George Steevens, Esq with glossarial notes and a sketch of the author's life." The book is illustrated with lovely engravings by C.W. Sharp, M. Retzsch, and others. It is part of a 2 volume set (this auction is only for Volume 1). The book is huge and thick- hundreds of pages long. It is about 10" x 6 1/2". It is almost 3" thick. Included are: - Sketch of the Life of Shakespeare - Tempest - Two Gentlemen of Verona - Merry Wives of Windsor - Twelfth Night, or What You Will - Measure for Measure - Much Ado About Nothing - Midsummer Night's Dream - Love's Labour's Lost - Merchant of Venice - As You Like It - All's Well That Ends Well - Taming of the Shrew - Winter's Tale - Comedy of Errors - Macbeth - King John - King Richard II - King Henry (several kings, several parts) - Troilus and Cressida - Timon of Athens - Coriolanus - Cymbeline - Titus Andronicus - Periclues, Prince of Typre - King Lear - Romeo and Juliet - Othello - The Rape of Lucrece and many, many more! The book has some wear. The cover is splitting from the first page, and slightly from the last page. Check out the photos! Antmuffin: Art, Antiques & Collectibles Learn more about Antmuffin here! Catherine Crowe
London: G. Routledge & Co, 1852. Condition: Very Good. Two Volumes Bound As One. Recent rebinding in half leather following original lines of hubbed spine. 8vo. Rubbing and scuffing to original board edges, binding and block tight and clean (pages lightly toned presumably because of original paper quality). Edges decorated with tiny red speckling, silk bookmark intact. The first edition (1848) was published in two volumes, and the book went through 16 editions in six years. This edition comprises the original (two volumes bound as one), with some revisions and additions and a new preface. Two previous owners' tasteful illustrated bookplates to front pastedown and ffep. Early booksellers small label to front pastedown "Fred Spenceley, Bookseller, 26 Music Hall Building, Boston. Philosophical Books A Speciality" An intriguing collection of sketches and anecdotes relating to ghosts and the mystery of life as understood by this noted Victorian novelist and children's author. Crowe gives her own interpretations and commentaries which seek to encourage a sense of wonder by emphasizing the supernatural. A classic example of the spiritualist writings of her day which had a great deal of influence on her contemporaries, including, it is thought, Charles Baudelaire, and on many authors and spiritual thinkers of later generations. She knew Dickens and Thackeray. Much hearsay (as well as corroborative evidence) seems to exist that Ms. Crowe, in a spirit-(or "spirits-, perhaps, for she inhaled ether) induced "trance", Ms. Crowe was observed stark naked on her street, with a handkerchief … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sondershausen, Philipp Karl Christian, Schriftsteller und Prediger (1792-1882).
Weimar, 20. X. 1852. 4 SS. 4to. "Hochverehrter Herr!

Benjamin Lloyd
Wetumpka, Ala: Published for the Proprietor, and for sale by him, 1852. Tenth Edition. Full Leather. Very Good binding. 32mo. The Tenth Edition of Benjamin Lloyd's Primitive Hymns, Spiritual Songs, and Sacred Poems. First published in 1841, for use in Primitive Baptist congregations, this hymnbook derives from the era when hymns were controversial. The Primitive Baptists were one of two sects of the Baptist Church of America, formed in the nineteenth century after rising disagreements led to a full schism. One of the disagreements between the two groups was the use of music in hymns, the Primitives arguing that the Bible commands 'singing' only. Accordingly, Benjamin Lloyd published this, the first American hymnal to specifically avoid musical notation or accompaniment, instead listing only the lyrics, and designations such as 'CM' or 'LM' to denote what meter the hymn should be sung in. Still in use with the more conservative Primitive Baptists, Lloyd's Primitive Hymns serve as a landmark of American religious history. 700 hymns, with an index at the rear. Contemporary writing in ink on the front endpaper. Full leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Fully rebacked by a conservator using Japanese tissue, with the original spine laid down. All edges gilt. 32mo. (Joyce Cauthen "Benjamin Lloyd's Primitive Hymns" Encyclopedia of Alabama.). Very Good binding.

Nashville, 1852. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes. viii, 374 [i.e. 376]; vii, 376pp., plus thirty- one plates. Bound in original marbled boards, which are present but detached. The text block in each is broken into sections, an excellent and worthy candidate of professional rebinding to your taste. Some dampstaining, and foxing throughout, more noticeable on some of the plates. A very rare complete set of this interesting and important Tennessee periodical, containing all twelve articles entitled "Early History of the Southwest," which constitute the main interest of the magazine for modern readers. After the magazine ceased publication with the December 1852 issue, the editors followed their intention stated in their last editorial and gathered all of the narratives into a book issued in January 1853 entitled INDIAN BATTLES, MURDERS, SEIGES [sic] AND FORAYS IN THE SOUTH-WEST. ".This was a collection of narratives by various authors. These had appeared separately as articles in the SOUTH WESTERN MONTHLY MAGAZINE, printed in Nashville during the years 1851-52. The magazines are considered frontier periodicals of extreme rarity - the 1853 book.is all but unobtainable. Apparently, few copies of the book were printed, judging from the very few times one finds records of its sale." - Allen. CALLOT, Jacques.
1852. Ad 1: Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXXVIII, p. 247 ("not traced"); cf. Meaume, Ouvrages De Jacques Callot (1852), 0685-0709 (original series); WorldCat (1 copy of Allard issue); ad 2: Wurzbach II, p. 369; cf. Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XVII, p. 243, 7-33 (first state); Muller, Historieplaten 2046; not in WorldCat. Ad 1: Only copy located, with the plates in their first state, of a print series depicting beggars and tramps published by Claes Jansz. Visscher after the original ca. 1625 print series by Jacques Callot, Capitano de Baroni. Hollstein notes that the stock list of Claes Jansz. Visscher's son Claes Claesz. Visscher II includes this title, but no copy could be located. The plates apparently descended to Carel Allard (active 1673-1707) for he published it with the plates in a second state, bearing his own name (known only from a copy at Yale University Library). Ad 2: A rare print series of tramps, cripples and beggars, originally engraved by Hondius after designs by the Dutch painter Pieter Jansz, Quast (ca. 1605-1647), first published in 1638 and still bearing that date at the end. The plates are here in their second state, reworked and published by Claes Jansz. Visscher and dated 1652 on the title-plate. Small spot on the title-page of the first work, a few faint stains in the margins, plates also numbered by hand, and lacking plates 3 and 4 of the second work. Very good copies.

John William NORIE (1772 - 1843) / William HEATHER (fl. 1765 - 1812).
London: [Norie & Wilson]. Copper-engraving (Very Good, clean with strong engraving impression, some light toning along centrefold, 2 original crisp vertical folds, old tack marks to corners), 67.5 x 98 cm (26.5 x 38.5 inches). Very rare - a stellar example of a sheet featuring the most important sea charts of the Mascarene Islands (Réunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues) made during the 19th Century, created by the Heather-Norie dynasty, predicated upon the finest sources collected in the wake of Britain attaining dominance over the Indian Ocean. This excellent work features five sea charts on a single sheet, collectively representing the most important maritime mapping of the Mascarene Islands (Réunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues) created during the 19th Century. The base charts were first published by the leading chartmaker William Heather in 1811, in the wake of Britain’s conquest of the islands the year before, and at the beginning of her elaborate design to secure long-term political and economic hegemony over the Indian Ocean basin. The present 1852 edition of the chart was published by the firm of Norie & Wilson, having been significantly updated by Heather’s heir, John William Norie and his successors. Predicated upon the most authoritative sources acquired from naval officers and Crown officials, the chart sequence represented the finest mapping of the Mascarene Islands of its time, with updated editions of the chart being produced over a period of 66 years, a remarkably long run for any 19th Century map. The present sheet of charts evinces the signature style of the Heathe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1852. 8vo. viii, 135, [1], 32pp. With half-title, an engraved frontispiece and a terminal publisher's catalogue. Original publisher's blue cloth boards, lettered in gilt. Rubbing to spine, joints, and edges, a trifle marked. Armorial bookplate of 'Mervyn Lloyd Peel' to FEP, lightly foxed. The first edition of the travelogue by naval officer Sir William Peel (1824-1858), third son of Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), recounting his 1851 journey through the African interior. Having foreseen the opportunity afforded by a period on half pay, Peel entered into meticulous preparations for his expedition, including intense study of the Arabic language under the tutelage of Maronite Joseph Churi, with whom he would travel. The pair departed in August, tracing a path north up the Nile, crossing the desert of Khartoum into al-Ubayd. Their progress was fraught with peril and beset by severe fever. Safely returning to England in January 1852, Peel immediately set about composing this memoir. His distinguished career in the Royal Navy would see Peel serve during the Crimean War at Sevastopol and the battle of Inkerman, later participating in the military reaction to the Indian Mutiny. His bravery, being renowned in the services, would see him become one of the first recipients of the Victoria Cross. ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUGO (Victor)
S.l.n.d. [Click Below for Full Description]
