Melville, Herman & Reynolds, J. N.
THE TOWN-HO'S STORY in the October, 1851 issue of Harper's Monthly, first edition, about 75% of paper spine perished, some modest soiling to the front and rear covers, some leaves exhibiting scattered foxing, else a g/vg copy with much nicer contents in original wraps of this, the first appearance in print of any section of this 19th century American masterpiece. Along with MOCHA DICK OF THE PACIFIC by J. N. Reynolds in the February 3rd, 1844 printing of the Portland Tribune, near fine in wraps and taking up a bit more than 20% of the entire issue. A wonderful pairing of an early reporting (the first being by the same author, J. N. Reynolds, in 1839) of the real whale from which Melville based his now immortal tale and the rare first separate printing of any portion of MOBY DICK. [Attributes: First Edition]

Nott, Josiah C.
Mobile, AL: Printed by Dade, Thompson & Co., 1851. First edition. 8vo. 26 pp. Nott (1804-1873) was a physician in Mobile, Alabama, and an adherent to the ideas of Samuel Morton who advanced the theory of polygenism, that each race had a separate origin, accounting for the superiority of some over others; this essay preceded Nott's influential Types of Mankind (1854), co-written with George Gliddon, and a foundation for those who defended the subjugation of the Negro race through slavery. Sabin 56040 (note). Owen, p. 1092 (the Curry copy). Ellison 787. OCLC locates nine copies (New York Hist. Soc., Birmingham/Jefferson Co. Public, Alabama, Montevallo, Duke, North Carolina, New Hampshire Hist. Soc., Texas-Dallas, Wisconsin Hist. Soc.). Several leaves heavily foxed, some other foxing, but a very good copy. Original printed yellow wrappers (some soiling). (8499).

Mobile, AL: Prietnd [sic] by Dade, Thompson & Co., 1851. First edition, Part I [all published]. 8vo. 50 pp. A spirited defense of slavery from the overbearing zealotry of the abolitionists. Caption title: "The Prospect Before Us." Apparently not in Sabin. Ellison 765. OCLC locates one copy with the printed wrappers (Birmingham/Jefferson Co. Public), but three others (Virginia, North Carolina, Rochester) under the caption title, with an attribution to John C. Calhoun, based on the printing of "Mr. Calhoun's Resolutions" on the final two pages. Another issue, "by a citizen of the south" and without the "Part I," was issued the same year in New Orleans (OCLC locates two copies of that issue: New York Historical Society, Michigan). A number of leaves heavily foxed, other foxing, but a very good copy. Original printed light green wrappers (a little soling and edgewear). (8498).

HUNT ROBERT
London, Glasgow (1851) - John Joseph Griffin and Richard Griffin. Molto interessante il riferimento alla scoperta del processo "by which the external Nature may be copied in all the beauty of colour" proprio mentre questo volume era in stampa. Di particolare rilievo gli apparecchi messi in vendita da John Joseph Griffin and Company riportati a fine libro.
