Paradoxien des Unendlichen. Herausgegeben aus dem schriftlichen Nachlasse des Verfassers, von Dr. Fr. Prihonsky.

Leipzig, 1851. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Re-stitched and with a new paper backstrip perfectly matching the wrappers. Possibly lightly washed (?). Housed in a custom-made red cloth box with a gilt red morocco title-label to spine. XII, (2), 134 pp.. The exceedingly scarce first edition of this landmark work of logical and mathematical thought, in which Bolzano anticipates, by decades, Cantor's work in Infinite Numbers, lays the foundation for set theory, and becomes a precursor Cauchy, Cantor, and Weierstrass in the arithmetization of mathematical analysis. Needless to say, the work, which calls for a total arithmetization of mathematical analysis, was highly praised and admired by by the most important logicians in the field, Peirce, Dedekind, and Cantor."Paradoxes of the Infinite is a landmark in modern mathematical and logical thought. Bolzano recognized the necessity, in analyzing the paradoxes of infinity, of defining various "obvious" mathematical concepts, including that of continuity [...] Certain of the mathematical implications of his simple and obvious statement about continuity are utterly astonishing' (J.R. Newman, The world of mathematics, p. 241). "In 'Paradoxes' Bolzano became the first mathematician to note that an infinite set could be considered equivalent to certain of its subsets. Thus, for example, the sets of positive whole numbers is equivalent to the set of positive even numbers, although it is clear that the set of even numbers is only a subset of the set of whole numbers. [...] The property of infinite sets noted by Bolzano was later used by C. S. Pierce to define precisely the concepts of finite and infinite sets. [...] Bolzano actually laid the foundations for set theory. He also was a precursor of Cauchy, Cantor, and Weierstrass in the arithmetization of mathematical analysis." (Styazhkin, History of Mathematical Logic from Leibniz to Peano, P. 143-4).The work was published three years after the author's death, and Bolzano had to await posthumous fame for his revolutionizing masterpiece, a fate befalling many that are so much ahead of their time. "Bolzano was a forerunner of important theories and ideas in various areas of knowledge. Many of Bolzano's ideas had to be discovered anew since Bolzano's preparatory work remained unknown in many cases and has come to light only from historical research." (SEP) "Unlike Leibniz, Bolzano was an unequivocal champion of the absolute infinite. Cantor particularly admired Bolzano's attempt to show that the paradoxes of the infinite could be explained, and that the idea of completed infinities could be introduced without contradiction into mathematics. In fact, Bolzano's Paradoxien des Unendlichen, published in 1851, received high praise from Cantor for having done an important service to mathematics and philosophy alike" (Dauben, Georg Cantor, P. 124)."The essential difference between Bolzano's incomplete theory of real numbers and those of for instance, theory Weierstrass and Georg Cantor are marked by the shift from intentional meaning, in Bolzana's work, toward a general tendency to extensionality, and, above all, by the possibility of creating new mathematical objects by means of definition by abstraction, based on equivalence relations, of which Bolzano was unaware. These differences also appear clearly in his Paradoxien des Unendlichen, which contains many interesting fragments of general set theory." (DSB)Bolzano's groundbreaking work not only influenced mathematics and logic, it also profoundly affected several branches of philosophical thought of the following century. "Radically anti-Kantian, though in a distinctly non-Hegelian way, Bolzano was one of the first thinkers to call for a total arithmetization of mathematical analysis that avoided recourse to all intuition or intuitive models or structures. This commitment was evident in his posthumously published Paradoxes of the Infinite" (Cahiers pour l'Analyse)

A Practical Treatise on the Working and Ventilation of Coal Mines: with Suggestions for Improvements in Mining,

First Edition, 128pp small folio, 2 errata slips, complete with 16 engraved plans many of which are large and folding, an excellent virtually fine copy in original gilt lettered blind decorated straight-grained cloth, London Weale, 1851. This is the great standard work on the subject of successful mine ventilation which was so essential for the efficient working of the great coal-fields of the industrial revolution. The primary purpose of underground-mine ventilation is to provide oxygen to the miners and to dilute, render harmless, and carry away dangerous accumulations of gases and dust. In some of the gassiest mines, more than six tons of air are circulated through the mine for every ton of coal mined. Air circulation is achieved by creating a pressure difference between the mine workings and the surface through the use of fans. Fresh air is conducted through a set of mine entries (called intakes) to all places where miners may be working. As well as highly elaborate illustrations and descriptions of actual systems other chapters are on Safety Lamps; Observations on the Use of Scientific Instruments in Mining; Remarks on Fires in Coal Mines; Advice to Underground Colliery Managers and Practical Hints on the Management of Mines &c.

- Stellenweise leicht fleckig. As such he travelled several times from America to Spain and back. After his definite return to Spain, he wrote this book, of which Bartolomeo de Las Casas said it contained as many lies as pages. The first part of this work was printed in Sevilla. After Fernandez de Oviedos death other parts were edited with translations in French and English. This edition, richly commented and with illustrations and maps of the author is the first complete edition of the first report of the 'Primer Cronista del Nuevo Mundo'. Partly lightly stained.         Our Herds, No. 4, Dairy Cow

London: E. Gambart & Co., 1851. Hand-coloured lithograph. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, mild rippling, and a few small losses at the edges of the top and left margins. 20 7/8 x 25 3/8 inches. 25 1/4 x 30 3/8 inches. A charming plate after a work by one of the most prominent nineteenth-century animal painters. Strongly influenced by the seventeenth-century Dutch landscape and animal painters like Aelbert Cuyp, Thomas Sidney Cooper was one of the most prolific and eminent animal painters of his time. As a young boy, he showed a remarkable aptitude for drawing, and he trained with the scene-painter Doyle while completing an early apprenticeship with a coachbuilder. After brief stints as a coach- painter, draughtsman, and scene-painter, he moved to London in 1823, where he began to sketch works in the British Museum. Although admitted to the Royal Academy schools, he was unable to attend due to financial constraints and moved back to Canterbury, where he worked as a drawing instructor. In 1827, he moved to Brussels, where he established a coterie of students and befriended Eugène Verboekhoven, whose animal paintings strongly influenced his early endeavors. It was during this period that Cooper first began to experiment with oil painting and completed several series of cattle lithographs, which were issued by various publishers including Ackerman.Cooper returned to London in 1831, where he exhibited at acclaimed venues including the Suffolk Gallery and the British Institution. His reputation grew after his cattle paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843-45, and he was elected Associate Royal Academician in 1845. In addition to his intimate bovine studies, he also painted animals into the landscapes of other artists including Frederick Lee, R.A. and Thomas Creswick. Despite various attempts to experiment with other genres, Cooper's thematic mainstays remained cattle and sheep throughout his life. By the 1870s, he was inundated with profitable commissions, and many of his works were engraved and copied in order to meet public demand. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography.

        View of the Great Exhibition

London: Published by Lloyd Brothers & Co. 22 Ludgate Hill, & Simpkin Marshall & Co. Stationers Hall Court, September 1st, 1851. Hand coloured lithograph highlighted in gum arabic. Mounted on card as issued. In excellent condition with the exception of some discolouration in the margins. Image size: 10 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches. 23 1/2 x 17 1/4 inches. This wonderful image, illustrating various pieces of French furniture, was included in Day & Son's rare folio of lithographs illustrating the wonders of the Great Exhibition. This is a lovely image from a rare suite of lithographs by Day & Son entitled Recollections of the Great Exhibition of 1851, published in London in the same year. This remarkable text is comprised of twenty-five hand coloured lithographs illustrating the various rooms and exhibits of the Great Exhibition. The works are lithographed by Day & Son after images by John Absolon, W. Goodall, C. T. Dolby, H. C. Pidgeon, Michael, and Wilson. This wonderful image depicts an ornate room filled with French furniture. The room is populated by numerous chairs and there is an elegant Rococo side table in the center as well as a gilt edged sideboard along the left wall. The Great Exhibition of 1851, although it was the first truly international event of its kind, was prompted by the success of the French Industrial Exposition of 1844. The idea was initially ignored by the British Government, but under the enthusiastic patronage of Prince Albert, plans for the exhibition went ahead. Albert was keen that the 'Exhibition of All Nations' should be self- financing: Parliament still remained unconvinced. A fund of 230,000 pounds was raised and a board of Commissioners set up. The declared aims of the exhibition were to celebrate human progress in the form of manufacture, invention and good design, and to promote cooperation between nations. The size of the exhibition space was fixed at 700,000 square feet, and the government was persuaded to treat the Crystal Palace as a bonded warehouse so that no import duties were payable on goods imported for the exhibition. As it happened, and despite government skepticism, the event was a huge success, both nationally and internationally, and received over 6,000,000 visitors. The exhibition ranged in scope from ornamental furniture and modern machinery to an elaborate tent from Tunis. Beautiful portrait of United States Frigate "St. Lawrence" saluting off Osbourne, Isle of Wight, summer residence of Queen Victoria. The St. Lawrence was laid out in the 1820s by the Norfolk Navy Yard, but she remained uncompleted on the ways until work on her, interrupted by a shortage of funds, was resumed during the Mexican War and she was finally launched in late 1847 or early in 1848. She bore 8 VIII-inch guns and 42 32 pounders. A beautiful sailing ship, she represents an ideal of the pre- steamship days, superbly rendered by Dutton, who was probably the best printmaker of marine subjects during this period. Thomas Goldsworth Dutton (d. 1891) worked for Day & Haghe and Day & Son, producing refined lithographs of the great British ships of the period, as well as visiting battleships of other nations, as here. With Commander Joshua Sands in command, the St .Lawrence departed New York on the 20th February 1851, partially on a good-will visit but also carrying to England the exhibits from the United States for the Great Exhibition in London, the first modern world's fair which opened on 1st May, 1851. At some point before May 5th (the date this print was published) she evidently visited the Isle of Wight, where as a diplomatic courtesy she fired a salute to Queen Victoria. Her return voyage was made via Lisbon and she arrived back in New York on 11 August, 1851. Cf. Contemporary annotations to a few leaves, interior otherwise fresh. A handsomely bound copy of a scarce and important title. * Only edition. Sabin remarked humorously that this was "light reading for the Gold Hunter on his voyage around the Horn." Rockwell's Compilation addressed the needs of miners and other individuals who needed to reconcile Mexican land titles with the new U.S. laws that went into effect in the territory acquired by the United States in the recently concluded Mexican-American War (1846-48). An impressive achievement and a notable contribution to comparative law, it discusses Mexican mining and real estate laws, and their Spanish colonial antecedents, and offers comparisons to the common law of mines and mining. Also included are treaties and other general documents, such as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and Mexican colonization laws from 1823 to 1846, and a vocabulary of Spanish words. Recognized as an authority at the time of its publication, it remained a standard work for decades and is even cited today. Arnold,
