        Moby-Dick, or The Whale

Very Good hardbound copy of the American First Edition in the publisher's original purplish-brown cloth with the circular lifesaver device debossed on the front and rear boards, expertly rebacked retaining the original spine with the loss of a bit of the upper & lower decorative gilt, spine gilt somewhat faded, tips repaired, unobtrustive scattered spotting and staining to the binding, faint marginal dampstain to the upper corner of the first one hundred pages, foxing, ex-libris Fisk Memorial Library, Natchez, Mississippi. Apart from the rebacking and the minor repair to the tips the binding is completely original, with no cosmetic applications. This copy with the original burnt-orange endpapers, the six pages of publisher's advertisements, a terminal blank, and double flyleaves at the back. The ink signature of the original owner, William M. W. Cochran, Natchez, Mississippi, is present on the front free endpaper and dated December, 1851, indicating the book was purchased only a month after publication. Also present is the pencil signature of W. L. Cochran, dated 1909. Rubber-stamped onto the front flyleaf and (more faintly) on the dedication page is the library stamp of Fisk Memorial Library, Natchez, Mississippi (no other library markings present). The book is housed in a custom-made clamshell box bound in chocolate-brown cloth with a paper label on the spine. All in all, a presentable copy, in the publisher's original binding, of this desirable high point in American literature.. 1st U.S. ed. Hard Cover. Very Good.

      Boston: Ticknor, Reed & Fields, 1851. Hawthorne, Nathaniel. THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES. Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1851. First edition in original publisher's blind-stamped cloth. A NEAR FINE copy, only lightly worn with a few spots to the cloth, but almost completely unchipped at both ends of the spine which is very rarely the case. This example is bright and sharp, has never been repaired or restored. With the earliest adverts at the front of the volume (Clark's primary state "A") dated 1851. Perfect type at page 50, line 25 & page 278, line 25. Reset type at page 149, lines 1-3. BAL 7604 in the variant "B' binding. This copy's original owner (and we may be the first bookseller to have noticed this) has drawn a small and well-executed portrait of Hawthorne on the recto of the final blank, dated April 18th, 1851 and captioned with the Latin phrase: "Qui facit per alium, facit per se" which suggests something akin to the legal notion that an owner is responsible for damage caused by his antecedents or current servants. Possibly this refers to the curse of THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES whereby the sins of a family lineage get passed down through each generation (which is also reflected in the decaying of the seven-gabled mansion itself). Normally, original ownership marks aren't much mentioned but we find this fascinating. Along with THE SCARLET LETTER, THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES contains some of Hawthorne's greatest writing and remains, after 160 years, just as much a classic. A fresh collector's copy with only the most minor of trivial faults. Housed in a vintage cloth and leather labeled slipcase. . First Edition. Near Fine.

Housed in a marbled board and brown cloth slipcase.“Set in mid-19th-century Salem, Mass., the work is a somber study in hereditary sin based on the legend of a curse pronounced on Hawthorne’s own family by a woman condemned to death during the infamous Salem witchcraft trials. The greed and arrogant pride of the novel’s Pyncheon family through the generations is mirrored in the gloomy decay of their seven-gabled mansion, in which the family’s enfeebled and impoverished relations life. Some intermittent light foxing throughout, the last few leaves with a small waterstain in the lower outer corner, the brown-orange coated endpapers remarkably clean and fresh. Small areas of upper and lower joints and spine head expertly and almost invisibly restored. A spectacular copy. Housed in a full red morocco clamshell case. The front and back of the case with onlaid designs of Moby-Dick in black and white leather, decorated in gilt, surrounded by a single blind-stamped border with gilt corner fleurons. Spine with five raised bands, decorated in gilt in compartments with three black leather labels lettered in gilt. When we purchased this copy, it was completely untouched but it had some wear and small losses along the spine joints and spine head and tail. This book hardly ever appears in untouched state and we thought long and hard as to what we should do about the wear. SUPERB LATE 19TH CENTURY OLIVE BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT AND INLAID IN THE ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE, BY FAZAKERLEY (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with frames of gilt rules, dots, and inlaid tan morocco, central panel of upper cover with inlaid red morocco rectangle emblazoned with the title in gilt at the head, below it a large, topiary-shaped, symmetrical design in inlaid morocco and gilt tooling, incorporating 34 heart-shaped green leaves on curling hairline stems as well as five lotus blossoms with lavender petals and inverted red heart centers (lower cover with smaller version of the same inlaid elements inside a plain-ruled panel), raised bands, gilt spine compartments continuing the same design (each with four inlaid leaf cornerpieces and central lotus flower), turn-ins with gilt and dot frames and lotus and leaf cornerpieces, ivory silk endleaves, marbled flyleaves, EDGES GILT AND ELABORATELY GAUFFERED WITH DEEP GOUGING (in a similar floral pattern), THE FORE EDGE WITH THREE EXQUISITELY PAINTED SCENES within pointed frames, these vignettes taken from illustrations appearing within the book. In a felt-lined linen slipcase. With 41 engraved headpieces, as called for. Front pastedown with engraved bookplate of Rodman Wanamaker (see below). Spine and front board sunned to a pleasing uniform tan (as almost always with this color of morocco), occasional minor foxing (more prominent on first and last gatherings), but still AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY OF A LOVELY BOOK, the morocco lustrous and without perceptible wear, the edges with particularly brilliant gilding, and the three painted fore-edge vignettes in perfection condition. Alaric Alexander Watts (1797-1864) was best known as editor of two literary annuals, "Literary Souvenir" and "Cabinet of Modern Art." Publication of the present poetic anthology helped to pull him out of bankruptcy, and he soon afterward retired from the literary life to a secure civil service pension. Binder Thomas Fazakerley is especially well known for delicate paintings on glittering gold fore edges, visible, not when the volume is fanned open, but rather when it is closed--and that is certainly a feature notably on display here. The vignettes are set off by a striking physical context: the fancifully designed and artfully crafted morocco is a visual delight, and the unpainted portions of the golden book block edges are memorable, as the gauffered embellishments in high relief represent sculpting of this sort at least as pronounced as we have ever seen. In the top miniature (measuring approximately 38 x 33 mm.), we see a colorful sunset over a tranquil lake. The bottom miniature of the same size depicts a stone-towered castle beside a river. The center miniature (measuring approximately 58 x 38 mm.) shows an adorable Cupid in a scallop-shell sailboat. Despite the fact that this catalogue contains two examples, the type of volume offered here is rarely seen for sale: from 1975 to 2009, ABPC lists just three bindings with multiple fore-edge vignettes (we had a fourth such specimen in 1994, and there were three others, one in poor condition, at the 3 December 2010 sale at Christie's-New York). Former owner Rodman Wanamaker (1863-1928) was the heir to the great Philadelphia department store and, in his father's opinion, a "genius in merchandise" and "an inspiration to creative labor." A celebrated connoisseur, Wanamaker not only collected, but also sold fine cultural objects in his store, "thereby encouraging America's taste for the beautiful." (ANB) It is not surprising that he would have owned the present volume.

        Life of Thomas Stothard, R.A. with personal reminiscences

      London: Bradbury & Evans for John Murray, 1851. 1 volume expanded to ten, small quarto mounted to large quarto. (14 5/8 x 10 3/4 inches). Lithographic portrait frontispiece, on india paper mounted, additional title within decorative wood-engraved border printed in bistre, title with wood-engraved headpiece, numerous wood-engraved illustrations printed in bistre, extra-illustrated with approximately 1,344 additional items (including 1 autograph letter signed from the author, 8 original pen, ink and wash drawings by Stothard, 6 original watercolour drawings by Stothard, and 1,323 engravings after Stothard including 14 by William Blake). 19th-century red morocco gilt by Riviere, covers with wide decorative borders of filets and a decorative roll of stylized foliage and flower-heads with stylized flower-spray cornerpieces, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, the others with elaborate repeat decoration of massed small tools, gilt turn- ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (small expert repair to head of vol.VIII). A unique collection of Stothard's work, based around the first edition of the first full biography of the artist by his daughter-in-law, expansively extra-illustrated with original watercolours, drawings and engravings after Stothard by many of the greatest engravers of the late- 18th and early 19th century, including Stothard's friend William Blake 'In 1779 Stothard commenced his career as an illustrator of books, being employed to illustrate Ossian and Hervey's Naval History. But his principal employers were Bell and Harrison, and in this year his numerous designs for Bell's Poets and Harrison's Novelist's Magazine began to be published. The first of the latter was a scene from Joseph Andrews (dated 1 Dec.), and in the following year he made no less than 148 drawings for this publication, for which he was paid a guinea apiece. He also made many drawings for the Ladies' Magazine in this and the following years, and a number of small but spirited drawings of the famous actors and actresses of the day. Among the prose works illustrated by him were novels by Fielding, Smollett, Richardson, and Sterne, Ridley's Tales of the Genii, Paltock's Peter Wilkins, Don Quixote, Gil Blas, Robinson Crusoe, the Arabian Nights, the Vicar of Wakefield, and Gulliver's Travels. These designs made a new departure in book illustration by their variety of invention, their literary sympathy, their spirit and their grace. Those to Peregrine Pickle and Peter Wilkins have been specially admired, but Stothard never surpassed those to Clarissa Harlowe for elegance, or those to Tristram Shandy for delicate humour. He may be said to have founded the types of Sancho Panza and Uncle Toby, afterwards adopted by his friend Charles Robert Leslie and others. To this period also belong a few charming illustrations to Ritson's Songs (1783). A little later (1788-9) came his illustrations to the Pilgrim's Progress, in which he found a region of pure but very human allegory well suited to his gentle imagination... To 1790 belong his illustrations to Robinson Crusoe, published by John Stockdale, and engraved by Medland, a series of great beauty (re-engraved by C. Heath, and published by Cadell thirty years later); and also a set of six charming groups of children at school and at play. Besides these more important designs, he executed a number of headpieces, tailpieces, frontispieces, and vignettes of all kinds, including some charming miniature drawings of royal festivities. He designed even shop-cards and fashion plates, for, though popular, he was poorly paid, and, having married in 1783, had to provide for an increasing family... It was in 1793 also that his first illustrations to Rogers's Pleasures of Memory were executed. The first edition of the poem in the British Museum, illustrated by Stothard, is dated 1794, but there are two engravings in the print-room (one of them the delightful Hunt the Slipper) which are dated 1793... In 1796... appeared his illustrations to the Fables of Flora, which are remarkable for the gracefulness of their fancy and the beautiful drawing of the flowers. In 1798 were published his beautiful illustrations to Pope's Rape of the Lock, in 1790 the Seven Ages from Shakespeare, and by the close of the century he may be said to have almost covered his field of illustration... During... [the early part of the 19th century]... his taste was frequently consulted in the decoration of the houses of his wealthy friends and patrons, of whom Samuel Rogers was the earliest and most constant. Stothard helped in the decoration of Rogers's house in St. James's Place (built 1803), and in the illustration of successive editions of his poems for over forty years. In the most elaborate editions of Rogers's Italy (1830) and the Poems (1834) Stothard joined with Turner in contributing illustrations, which were engraved on steel by Finden and others. The smaller engravings on wood by Luke Clennell (the first of which appeared in Rogers's Pleasures of Memory, 1810) are justly prized for their close imitation of Stothard's beautiful touch with the pen. Less known are the little illustrations of the Pleasures of Memory (1808) and Human Life (1810) in the Royal Engagement Pocket Atlas, an annual for which he provided the headpieces for many years... In 1815 Stothard went over to Paris with Chantrey and others, and visited the Louvre before the dispersion of Napoleon's spoils. In 1817 and 1818 respectively he exhibited San Souci and Fête Champêtre, in which the influence of Watteau is perceptible. They were followed in 1819 by the illustrations to Boccaccio (published 1825) already referred to. In 1821... he sustained a severe shock from the sudden death of his son, Charles Alfred [first husband of Mrs.Bray]. This is said to have had a permanent effect on his spirits... In 1825 his wife died, and in 1826 he lost his lifelong friend, Flaxman, who had in early life been attracted to him by the sight of some of his book illustrations in a shop window... He continued to walk out alone, in spite of his weakness and deafness, till the close of the autumn of 1833, when he was knocked over by a carriage. He sustained no apparent injury from the accident, but he never recovered from the effects of it, and died at his house, 28 Newman Street, on 27 April 1834. He was buried in Bunhill Fields... Stothard's life appears to have been as pure and blameless as the art to which it was devoted. His disposition was retiring, and he did not seek society; but he was justly esteemed by his fellow-artists and his few intimate friends. He paid visits to Archdeacon Markham and other of his friends; he went once to Paris; but his art supplied him with sufficient pleasure to the end of his life. As Leigh Hunt said of him in his last days, an angel dwelt in that tottering house amidst the wintry bowers of white locks, warming it to the last with summer fancies.' (DNB). Oersted is universally known for his discovery of the Electro-Magnetism in 1820. Afterwards he went on to write a number of important philosophical works on natural philosophy and empiricism, of which "Aanden i Naturen" he himself considered his main work. Both H.C. Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard admit to having been influenced by the writings of Oersted. "He was an enthusiastic follower of the "Naturphilosophie" school in Germany, whose main object was the unification of physical forces, thus producing a monistic theory of the universe. It was to further this purpose that Oersted sought in actual phenomena the electro-magnetic identity of which he had already convinced himself on metaphysical grounds" (Percy H. William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin (1824 - 1907) achieved important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its modern form. Lord Kelvin is widely known for realising that there was a lower limit to temperature, absolute zero; absolute temperatures are stated in units of kelvin in his honour. Thomson matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1834 at the age of ten, and held the position of professor at that institution for fifty-three years, from 1846-1899. He devoted himself to the new doctrine propounded by Sadi Carnot in 1824 and by James Prescott Joule in 1847 that work and heat were convertible. Between 1851 and 1854 he formulated the two great laws of thermodynamics - of equivalence and of transformation; enunciated the doctrine of available energy; evolved theory of electric oscillations, which forms the basis of wireless telegraphy; experimented on electric telegraph cables, 1854; propounding the 'law of squares', became director of the Atlantic telegraph company, 1856; invented the mirror galvanometer; laid the cable across the Atlantic; studied atmospheric electricity, worked at mathematical theory of magnetism, &c. Wheeler Gift 1847. The Joule-Thomson effect states that the temperature of a compressed gas decreases with expansion into a vacuum because of the internal work done to overcome molecular attraction. "The only substantial contribution to thermodynamics to which the joint names of Joule and Thomson are attached belongs to an idea conceived by Thomson, who saw the possibility of analyzing the deviations of gas properties from the ideal behaviour. In particular, a non-ideal gas, made to expand slowly through a porous plug (so as to approximate a specified mathematical condition - constant enthalpy), would in general undergo a cooling (essentially a transformation of atomic motion into work spent against the interatomic attractions). For the delicate test of this effect Thomson required Joule's unsurpassed skill..." DSB, VII, p. 182.

' Cicero in his oration in praise of the poet Archias, and speaking on the subject of the Belles Lettres, observes, that "they nourish us in our youth, and invigorate us in old age; they embellish the most fortunate situation, and console us under disaster and persecution; they accompany us night and day in our journeys, and in our retreats from the world; and even when our minds are not disposed to profit by their instruction, we ought still to hold them in a just admiration, finding that, to those who possess them, they afford the most delicious gratifications." The sentiments thus eloquently expressed by one of the greatest orators of antiquity, are in an equal, perhaps even in a greater degree applicable to the study of the Fine Arts, which whether pursued professionally or as a source of amusement, is alike productive of all these advantages. The important influence which the cultivation of art has produced in all ages, in promoting the civilization, improvement and refinement of mankind, is so universally admitted, that any disquisition on the subject would be superfluous at the present time, when a knowledge and appreciation of the great and beautiful, is more generally diffused through all classes of society, than at any previous period in the world's history. This general diffusion of a taste for art, is to be attributed principally to the invention of engraving, which has been to the arts precisely what printing has been to literature. Had the works of our great writers been confined to manuscript copies, the enjoyment of their beauties must necessarily have been restricted to a small number of readers; and but for the invention of engraving, the knowledge of the wondrous creations of the old Italian masters, would be confined to the localities in which the original pictures are deposited. It is indeed to this art rather than to his own, that the painter must look for the transmission of his works to a remote age; many of the most admired pictures of Raphael, have mouldered from their walls or crumbled from their canvass; but the prints of his friend and cotemporary Marc Antonio Raimondi, still continue in full perfection, and give us a lively idea of the beauty of those paintings which would otherwise have been lost to us for ever. The formation of a cabinet of paintings requires not only the possession of an ample fortune, but of an amount of taste and judgment not easily acquired: a knowledge of engravings is on the other hand, obtained with much greater facility, and the acquisition of them is in the power of persons in almost every condition of life. Magnificent association-copy of the first edition of the first feminist novel in Denmark, the highly controversial and influential "Clara Raphael", which is the work that sparked the battle for women's rights in Denmark. The work constitutes the first Danish governess novel and it began an entirely new genre of women's novels hitherto unknown in Denmark. The work, which constitutes the break-through of feminism in Denmark, was greatly controversial and immediately caused great furore. It resulted in the so-called Clara Raphael Dispute, in which for instance N.F.S. Grundtvig defended Mathilde Fibiger. Due to the controversial contents of the work, Mathilde Fibiger published it anonymously, and only J.L. Heiberg (1791-1860, perhaps the most famous cultural persona during the Danish Golden Age. He played a more significant role than any other author or thinker during this period) is mentioned on the title-page, as the editor. Due to the contents of the book, Mathilde Fibiger had been unable to find a publisher for it, and only after the appearance of "Jane Eyre", did a publishing house dare take on this controversial book that was to become the main work of feminism in Denmark.The present copy has belonged to Mathilde Ørsted, the daughter of Hans Christian Ørsted (the discoverer of electro-magnetism), and one of the most famous women of her time in Denmark. She was a confidante of Hans Christian Andersen, knew all cultural personas of Golden Age Denmark, and was famous for her bold opinions and her outspokenness. She remained unmarried throughout her life. As Mary Wollstonecraft had pioneered feminist philosophy with her work "A Vindication of the Rights of Women" from 1792, and argued for education as the means to liberate women, so Mathilde Fibiger surprised her Danish contemporaries with her groundbreaking novel "Clara Raphael. Twelve Letters", from 1851, in which she drew a connection between the national-democratic movement and the liberation of women. With this book, which deals with the inequality of the sexes and the lack of possibility for women to develop themselves, Mathilde Fibiger became the first notable advocate of the emancipation of women in Denmark. One of the reasons why the book was so extremely controversial, apart from the political controversy of the request of equality, lay in the ability of the merely 20 year old author to clearly and precisely state and substantiate the essential problems. When reading the book, it is not difficult to see why if came to have the effect that it did, and why it caused the furor that it did. For instance, Clara Raphael, when despairing at the position of women in society, writes: "Our position in society is tragic, and why? What right does man have to suppress us? For subjugated we are, despite the chains being gilded." She understands that casting off these chains will be no easy matter, and that it will not only be a matter of politics, but also of consciousness and mindset: "When the peasants were granted their freedom, some of them wept, begging for permission to keep things as they had been." One of the beaming sentences of the novel is Clara's response to her friend when asked what she is actually fighting for: "I will fight and live for what I understand by the emancipation of women."Her hope of breaking with the existing patriarchal system of society required national and democratic self-awareness, which for her constituted a promise of freedom. In 1871, Frederik Bajer (1837-1922) and Matilde Bajer (1840-1934) founded the Danish Women's Society, the first women's organisation in Denmark. Mathilde Fibiger was one of the earliest members of the Society. When the Danish Women's Society was established, it did not demand female suffrage. It was not until 1906 that a majority of the members became in favour of making that demand the official policy of the Society. In Denmark, it was not until 1903 that women were allowed to vote in parochial church council elections; not until 1908 were they allowed to vote in parish council and local council elections, and not until 1915 in the Folketing and the Landsting elections. It was not until then that women became fully-fledged citizens in a political sense

Sert. / Chas. A. Poulson / Phila. / Jany 6th 1851." Philadelphia antiquarian Charles A. Poulson (1789-1866) was the son of Zachariah Poulson, Jr., publisher of "Poulson's Daily Advertiser." Joseph R. Ingersoll was a Whig Congressman from Pennsylvania who served in the House of Representatives from 1835-1837 (as a Jacksonian) and from 1841-1849. He declined renomination in 1848. Appointed Minister to Great Britain by President Fillmore, he served from August 21, 1852, to August 23, 1853. Bound in 6" x 9" green boards in the early 20th century, the half-inch portion sticking out at top has browned on front and back covers. Internally, the book is in fine condition.

Van Sinderen 61. On 1st May 1851, Queen Victoria opened the Great Exhibition. The event took place in Joseph Paxton's magnificent Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, and it was the first of the great international exhibitions held to celebrate progress in the world's arts and manufactures. Having been a source of aggravation to the scientific establishment for many years, Babbage was not invited to take part in the organization of the exhibition. This did not, of course, prevent him from putting forward his views, but they were ignored. In consequence he wrote this vitriolic book, The Exposition of 1851, which appeared shortly after the opening of the exhibition. In addition to a critique of the policies and the organization of the exhibition, Babbage also took the opportunity to address the corrupt state of science in England in general. Babbage was also angered by the fact that he was refused permission to display his pioneer computer, the model Difference Engine at the exhibition. He therefore bound in with the book copies of an earlier (1849) pamphlet the eleventh chapter of the History of the Royal Society, by C. R. Weld, which included a review from the Athenaeum written by Augustus De Morgan. Both of these dealt with the history of Babbage's work on calculating Engines and they were factually correct, the comments of both Weld and De Morgan being basically objective and providing a useful insight into Babbage's work as viewed by some of his contemporaries. Babbage himself provides a fascinating chapter on Calculating Engines (chapter 13, p.173-188) in which he explains the history of his project. In this edition Babbage added significant new material to Chapters 8 and 11, and the Weld chapter was brought into the book as a formal appendix. There is a 4 page bibliography of Babbage's own writings at the end of the printed text. This important book is very rare in any edition; we have only seen two copies in 30 years. A page has been inserted on to the half-title, on which is explained, in a neat late 19th century hand, that the present copy is that of George Sand and that it comes from the sale of her belongings. The rest of the page contains bibliographical information on the work. Nice copy.. The extremely scarce first edition, one of merely 84 copies that were not destroyed, of the first work by the Goncourt brothers - the work that laid the basis for their unique joint authorship. The famous brothers Edmond (1822-96) and Jules (1830-70) Goncourt played a unique role in 19th century French intellectual life. Together they developed a distinctive impressionistic style, called "écriture artiste"; their works are furthermore of great importance to the understanding of literary and social life of the period. They seminally influenced the naturalism and realism of 19th century literature - in the words of Émile Zola, they "provided a new sense of nature". The remarkable symbiosis in their collaboration, continuing to write as one until the death of Jules, has gone down in history as one of the most remarkable literary collaborations ever. They are considered aesthetes of the highest rank and were known as great collectors of art. They were also known to be highly neurotic and utterly misogynist. During the Second Empire they frequented the salon of Princess Mathilde and took part in the famous 'dîners Magny', the fortnightly gatherings that brought together leading men (and George Sand!) of letters and science at a Paris restaurant in the 1860'ies. In his will, Edmond left the entire Goncourt fortune to found the "Académie Goncourt", which began in 1903, when the prestigious Prix Goncourt was also founded. Their first work, "En 18..", was printed in 1000 copies, but it was confiscated by the censors and was burnt by the authors. Consequently, a mere 84 copies survived and the work is thus of the utmost scarcity. "Cet ouvrage, qui a été tire à 1000 exemplaires, a été brûlé par les auteurs; il n'existerait dans le commerce que 84 exemplaires donnés ou vendus." (Carteret)."Premiers ouvrage des Goncourt, très rare, dont le manuscrit a subi des suppressions avant l'impression de l'edition de Bruxelles." [the Brussels edition being the second edition, printed in 1884]. (Carteret). George Sand and the Goncourt brothers moved in the same intellectual and literary circles, were invited to the same places, the same salons, and had many friends in common. All three were seminal in determining the course of naturalistic writing of the 19th century. Interestingly, also George Sand began her literary career in as a collaboration, in a liaison with the writer Jules Sandeau. First edition of this rare colour-plate book recording the uniform and dress of the mid-19th century United States Army This work was published by William H. Hortsmann and Sons, "military furnishers" of Philadelphia: established in 1815, they were the country's leading military outfitters throughout the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth. The plates, drawn by G.C. Humphries, were presumably used by Hortsmann, in conjunction with the text, to explain to customers what they were entitled to wear; the official nature of the work being emphasized by the facsimile endorsments on each plate by the Adjutant General. The attractive plates are ably executed in lithography by P.S. Duval, one of the leading lithographic printers of the time. They consist of five chromolithographic images showing 19 full-length views of various ranks and regiments within the US Army; followed by 16 plates of details of uniforms (4 partially or completely hand-coloured); 2 plates of swords; and ending with coloured plates of "horse furniture." The text reprints the relevant regulations concerning the dress-code for officers and enlisted men, including members of the topographical engineers, dragoons, and cadets.
