NEW VARIETIES OF GOLD AND SILVER COINS, COUNTERFEIT COINS, AND BULLION; WITH MINT VALUES

New York. 1851.. 72,[2],2,2,[16]pp. plus five plates. Original gilt cloth. Slight repair at head of spine. Very minor scattered foxing. Bright and very good. Second edition, "rearranged, with numerous additions," after the first Philadelphia edition of the previous year. The authors were the official assayers for the Philadelphia Mint at the time of this work's publication, and the book was intended as a guide for those unfamiliar with recent advances in coinage and assaying. The text includes much data regarding the recent strikes in California, and devotes an entire chapter to the analysis of the quality of ore coming from California. The black and white plates depict various gold coins produced in the United States, including California bullion struck by private firms. There is also a discussion of the coinage of various countries of the world, including the TONG TSIEN of China, a "trashy coin...extremely convenient for alms-giving, a single piece being the usual quietus for a beggar." COWAN, p.76. KURUTZ 217b.

        Die Wasserfälle von Tivoli

Born in Canada (1818, Upper Canada near the mouth of the Trent River), Copway was a full-blood Ojibwa and the son of John Copway, a Mississauga chief and medicine man; according to his claims he was, by inheritance, a chief of the Mississauga. He first lived a traditional Ojibwa life, but in adolescence was drawn to Methodism and eventually became a missionary. Thereafter his life was lived at the margin between Indian and white cultures, and it was a checkered one - as is suggested by the fact that his greatest successes were not in Canada but in the United States, to which he emigrated after an 1846 imprisonment on charges of embezzlement from a native church council and a concomitant expulsion from the Canadian conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.Copway was a talented speaker and a well-published writer. His autobiography, The life, history, and travels of Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh (Albany first, then Philadelphia, 1847), went through several editions. He describes what he saw and whom he met (Disraeli, Baron de Rothschild, Lord John Russell, and others), as well as how he was received by the Europeans. The main purpose of the trip was to represent Christian American Indians at the 1850 General Peace Conference at Frankfurt am Main, where in full native attire he delivered a protracted and passionate antiwar speech.

        5 Briefe, davon 4 m. eigenh. Unterschrift.

Wien, 1851-1855.. Zus. 5 S., 4°.. -

Smoking and Smokers; Also, Snuff and Snuff-Takers. With Numerous Wood Cuts

London: Joseph Baker, 1851. First Edition. Blindstamped decorated cloth. Very Good. Essentially two books, closely related in topic and tone, in one. 90 and 90 pp. 8to, 8 by 4.5 inches, 20 by 12 cm.With numerous often droll woodcut illustrations of smokers in their various attitudes and conceits. The work(s) treat seemingly all aspects of their subject, including history, statistical data regarding, and then countless other looser associative matters of which the very act of smoking invites, for smoking, and now the mostly bygone practice of taking snuff, so much more to their acolytes than the simple consumption of the stuff. Thus there are chapters on reveries concerning tobacco, of the pipe as a means of public instruction, on maxims regarding, on tobacco and the classics, and on and on. Without question these droll studies were written largely for the delectation of smokers and snuff-takers! The ranginess and sly wit of the author, together with his sometimes ardent arguments in favor of the products, make this one of those rare cultural and literary artefacts that can entertain the modern reader as the author intended yet also with the ironic detachment of our hindsight. Green blindstamped boards decorated with gilt. Rubbing along gutters. A light dampstain affects the margins of many pages yet more or less blends in with the moderate age toning of the leaves. Some starting of the rear hinge.

        Wyld's New Plan of London.

1851 - London, 1851. Original colour. Wood engraving, 560 x 940mm. Minor repairs to folds. A detailed plan of London, marking the 'Crystal Palace' of the Great Exhibition on the south side of Hyde Park. The borders contain eleven vignettes of notable buildings, including the Great Exhibition buildings and 'Mr Wyld's Model of the Earth in Leicester Square'. 'Wyld's Great Globe' was a 60-foot diameter hollow globe with the surface of the Earth, complete with mountains and rivers, modelled in plaster of paris on its interior. Visitors would climb an internal staircase for viewing. James Wyld (1812-87), the publisher of this map, originally proposed this attraction for the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace, but it was judged too big and commercial for that show. Therefore Wyld acquired a ten-year lease on land in Leicester Square gardens and built it there. At first it was a great success, but the novelty wore off; after the lease was up Wyld could not find a buyer for the attraction and so the globe was sold for scrap.         Our Herds, No. 4, Dairy Cow

      E. Gambart & Co, London 1851 - Hand-coloured lithograph. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, mild rippling, and a few small losses at the edges of the top and left margins. A charming plate after a work by one of the most prominent nineteenth-century animal painters. Strongly influenced by the seventeenth-century Dutch landscape and animal painters like Aelbert Cuyp, Thomas Sidney Cooper was one of the most prolific and eminent animal painters of his time. As a young boy, he showed a remarkable aptitude for drawing, and he trained with the scene-painter Doyle while completing an early apprenticeship with a coachbuilder. After brief stints as a coach-painter, draughtsman, and scene-painter, he moved to London in 1823, where he began to sketch works in the British Museum. Although admitted to the Royal Academy schools, he was unable to attend due to financial constraints and moved back to Canterbury, where he worked as a drawing instructor. In 1827, he moved to Brussels, where he established a coterie of students and befriended Eugène Verboekhoven, whose animal paintings strongly influenced his early endeavors. It was during this period that Cooper first began to experiment with oil painting and completed several series of cattle lithographs, which were issued by various publishers including Ackerman. Cooper returned to London in 1831, where he exhibited at acclaimed venues including the Suffolk Gallery and the British Institution. His reputation grew after his cattle paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843-45, and he was elected Associate Royal Academician in 1845. In addition to his intimate bovine studies, he also painted animals into the landscapes of other artists including Frederick Lee, R.A. and Thomas Creswick. Despite various attempts to experiment with other genres, Cooper's thematic mainstays remained cattle and sheep throughout his life. By the 1870s, he was inundated with profitable commissions, and many of his works were engraved and copied in order to meet public demand. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography.

Du Développement des Idées Révolutionnaires en Russie par A. Iscander

Librairie A. Franck, rue Richelieu (Imprimerie Canis frères, Nice), Paris 1851 - First edition. Stamp of ownership to front flyleaf. Herzen's name written in ink under the printed pseudonym. Paper vignette mounted to half title with a name and address. In later red half maroquin. Spine with five raised bands, with green gilt title vignette, gilt place and date. xv, (1), 176 p. Herzen summed up his thoughts about Russia, its past, history and its relation to the revolutionary idea in this book, and shaped the new program for the future of the socialist movement. It was published in 1851 under the pseudonym of Iscander, the Turkish form of his Christian name. With the aid of Herzen's considerable wealth, and the help of his friends Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Giuseppe Mazzani and Jules Michelet, he was able to give his work wide publicity among western left-wing readership. It led to Herzen's expulsion from Nice, and within a few months the book was striktly banned in Russia, still it had a huge influence as well on the Russian intellects on the entire political and social spectrum. Alexander Ivanovich Herzen (Hertzen or Gertsen; 1812-1870) was a Russian political thinker and writer, the "father of Russian socialism", the ideological ancestor of the Narodniki movement and the american People's Party (or the "Populists"), his political activities led to the emancipation of the serfs in Russia in 1861. His autobiography, "My Past and Thoughts" (1861-67) considered to be one of the greatest works of Russian prose. A scarce work with great social and historical importance. [Ref.: Harris, R., Parthé, K.: A Herzen Reader. Northwestern University Press. Evenston, 2012.; Acton, E.: Alexander Herzen and the Role of the Intellectual Revolutionary. Cambridge University Press. Cambridge, 1979.]. Marks and underlines in pencil throughout. In fine condition. In later red half maroquin.

LIFE OF THOMAS STOTHARD, R. A

London: John Murray, 1851. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. 216 x 171 mm (8 1/2 x 6 3/4"). xxiv, 246 pp. FIRST EDITION. EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY DARK GREEN MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, BY JAMES TOOVEY (stamp-signed on front flyleaf), covers with French fillet border, raised bands, heavily gilt spine compartments featuring scrolling cornerpieces and large and intricate floral centerpiece, turn-ins densely gilt with botanical tools, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait, engraved title page frame, and more than 50 illustrations in the text. Spine evenly faded to a pleasing olive brown, covers with just a touch of fading and soiling, a handful of pages with extensive freckled foxing, trivial to minor foxing in much of the rest of the text, but still an extremely fresh copy in a scarcely worn, very attractive decorative binding. This is an intimate biographical account of the well-respected and prolific illustrator Thomas Stothard (1755-1834), written by his novelist daughter-in-law. Our artist's career began in 1779 when he executed drawings for magazines, and by the time he put down his pen, Stothard had illustrated an enormous number of works, including those by Bunyan, Cervantes, Defoe, Fielding, Goldsmith, Milton, Pope, Richardson, Shakespeare, Smollett, Spenser, Sterne, and Swift. More than 3,000 of the artist's designs were engraved, and nearly all are in the British Museum. His greatest achievement may be that in all of this work, he distinguished himself by variety of invention and sympathy with the individual text he was illustrating. Stothard also produced designs for larger prints published separately, among them "Callisto" and "Zephyrus and Flora," subsequently engraved by William Blake, Stothard's friend and frequent collaborating engraver. And he was a celebrated oil painter; in fact, his work on canvas, more than anything else, earned him membership in the Royal Academy as well as requests to paint decorations for the grand staircases at Burleigh House and the Advocates' Library in Edinburgh. In addition to producing book illustrations, prints, and paintings, Stothard designed elegant household objects in gold and silver. The author Anna Eliza Bray (1790-1883) married Stothard's son, Charles Alfred Stothard, also an artist. Between 1826 and 1874, Bray published at least a dozen works of fiction, her most popular novels being those based on the history of the principal families of the counties of Devon and Cornwall, where she lived. The best of these may be "The Borders of the Tamar and Tavy" (1836), written in the form of letters to the poet Robert Southey. In the midst of writing fiction, she took the time to write a biography of her late husband (1823) in addition to the present work.

So z. .
