LIVINGSTONE, David.
Abbey, Travel 347; Bradlow, Africana books and pictures, p. 123; Gay 3034; Henderson, Publishing Livingstone's Missionary travels; Howgego, 1850-1940, L 33; Mendelssohn, South African Bibliography, pp. 908-910; PMM 341. First edition of the famous account of the first mission and expedition through southern Africa undertaken by the Scottish physician, missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873). The account narrates chronologically his travels and experiences, including numerous descriptions of African tribes and chiefs, deserts, rivers, lakes, forests, cities, diseases, animals, trees, etc. Livingstone arrived in July 1841 at Kuruman in southern Africa. " In 1841-43 he travelled a considerable distance to the north of Kuruman and selected for his future operations the valley of Mabotsa (Mabotse)" (Howgego). He changed station several times in the following years and was the first European to locate Lake Ngami (Botswana) in 1849. In 1852 Livingstone left Cape Town travelling north, trying to find a suitable location on the Zambezi for a missionary station, and travelled further to Luanda (Angola), where he arrived in 1854. He decided to travel back to Lintanti (Botswana) and further eastward, becoming in 1855 the first European to see the waterfall he named Victoria Falls. From there he continued his journey to the east by canoe and arrived in Quelimane (Mozambique) in May 1856. The map included at the end shows this impressive journey. From Quelimane Livingstone sailed back to England. The folding frontispiece depicts Victoria Falls, based on the sketch that Livi … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York 1850 - Louis Le Breton
NEW YORK 1850 -BUSTLING WITH ENERGY Lithograph by Auguste Bry after the design of Louis Le Breton, published in Paris by E. Savary around 1850. Coloured by a later hand. Size (image): 32,5 x 48,5 cm Louis Le Breton (1818-1866) was a surgeon in the French Navy from 1836-48. During that period he made several very long expeditions including Dumont d'Urville's second circumnavigation (1837-40) aboard the Astrolabe. During that journey and on subsequent trips, he made drawings and watercolour views of noteworthy places, including Sacramento and San Francisco, New Orleans and Boston, Rio de Janeiro, sites in Oceania, New Zealand and Africa, as well as this view approaching New York. Le Breton's watercolours of the Astrolabe voyage were exhibited at the Salon de Paris during the years 1841-48. The boat in this New York scene is a paddlewheel steamship-triple masted sailing ship: the smoky, dangerous transitional boats that ultimately became all steam and built of steel. We see it steam, pumping out a black funnel of smoke, towards the East River, Fort William on Governor's Island on the right, Fort Clinton at the Battery on the left. As we look at the city, there are a number of fanciful architectural additions mixed with the buildings that were actually there. This is however clearly based on first-hand impressions. The scene the visitor to New York in the 1840s encountered would have been nearly overwhelming. There were far more boats in the harbour than there are today. The lower portion of the island was lined with piers and warehouses. There was an immense amount of activity … [Click Below for Full Description]

1850. RARE MID 19TH CENTURY VIEW OF RIO DE JANEIRO "Rio-Janeiro". Size (view): 40 x 55,5 cm (sheet: 63 x 79,5 cm). The couple married in Rio de Janeiro on 1 May 1843 and headed for France in the days thereafter. (Read more about the Marriage Princess Francisca and Prince de Joinville, May 1843) The 60-gun frigate Belle Poule (1828-1888), famous for bringing back the remains of Napoléon from Saint Helena to France in 1840, was under command of the Prince of Joinville. 19th-century Empire of Brazil, until 1822 a colony of the Kingdom of Portugal, was under the rule of Emperors Dom Pedro I and his son Dom Pedro II. Unlike most of the neighbouring Hispanic American republics, Brazil had political stability, vibrant economic growth, constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech, and respect for civil rights of its subjects, albeit with legal restrictions on women and slaves. The monarchy managed to bring peace and stability to the country, which eventually became an emerging international power. With prosperity and economic development came an influx of European immigration, including protestants and jews, although Brazil remained mostly catholic. Slavery, which had initially been widespread, was restricted by suc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gezicht op de Dam met Beurs van Zocher - Frans Buffa & Zn., ca. 1850
[Click Below for Full Description]

Rotterdam, Oude Haven - Sabatier, ca. 1850
1850. DE OUDE HAVEN TE ROTTERDAM. "Rotterdam Le Port". [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

ATLAS - HISTORICAL].
1850. A 3-volume historical manuscript atlas with beautiful manuscript maps, the volumes titled: Atlas historique, Souvenirs historiques and Tableaux et cartes. The Atlas historique contains finely calligraphed chronological tables displaying events in ecclesiastical history, the history of the Roman Empire and France, from the first century to 1850, followed by coloured double-page maps of France, the Ottoman Empire, Europe and the Roman Empire. The Souvenir historiques has the same structure, but is solely devoted to the history of England, Spain, Germany and Italy, covering the period from the fifth century to 1850, with coloured double-page maps of the British Isles, the Iberian Peninsula, the German states, and Italy. The Cartes et tableaux is the most ambitious volume, containing no fewer than 14 coloured double-page maps, including two world maps, maps of Africa, Asia, America, Oceania, Europe, etc., and numerous chronological tables. The ink has sometimes left a browned shadow on the back of the leaves or facing leaves and occasionally eaten a small hole in the paper, but the atlas is otherwise in very good condition. Bindings slightly chafed. A graphically vibrant French historical manuscript atlas.

Dickens, Charles
London: Bradbury and Evans, 1850. First edition. Illustrated by Hablot Knight Brown (published under the pseudonym Phiz). Very finely bound by Bayntun in full dark blue crushed morocco with gilt lettering and decorations to spine, gilt Dickens portrait to front cover and Dickens' signature replicated in gilt to rear cover, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, and marbled endpapers. An excellent and nearly fine copy with only toning to a few leaves and plates. David Copperfield was the author's eighth novel, originally published serially in nineteen monthly installments in a total of twenty parts (one double issue) from May 1849 - November 1850. The novel follows the life of David Copperfield from youth to adulthood, the events of which are said to mirror those of Dickens' own life, leading some to refer to the text as pseudo-autobiographical. Regardless of whether or not he intended this similarity, Dickens definitely showed an unusual attachment to David Copperfield, which he referred to as his favorite novel. This copy includes the forty illustrations, including a frontispiece and vignette title page, by H.K. Browne, who had also designed the cover illustrations for the serialized story. All but three of the illustrations, which include one dark plate with high black-and-white contrast and twenty-one horizontal illustrations, are clearly signed by the illustrator's pseudonym Phiz. David Copperfield is the second Dickens novel in which Browne uses the dark plate and horizontal illustration techniques. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Noyes, John Humphrey. 1811 - 1886].
[Oneida, N.Y.], 1850. 1st Printing. Not in Afro-Americana, 1553 - 1906, nor Work. Printed self-wrappers, now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. Age-toning to extremities, a few small dots (printer's ink?) at base of p. 1. Very Good Plus.. 14, [2 (blank)] pp. Folded & stiched, unopened. 6-5/8" x 4" Universally attributed to John Humphrey Noyes, founder of the Oneida Community, a perfectionist religious communal society established in 1848, which believed strongly in a system of free love known as complex marriage. Herein, Noyes, begins by debating the merits or evils of slavery, then adds marriage to the mix. To do so, Noyes uses a dialogue format between 3 characters: Judge North, Major South, and Mr Free Church. Judge North, as might be imagined, opposes the institution of slavery; Major South asserts "the "condition of master and servant is natural." Mr Free Church holds the "opinion about marriage" as does Judge North of slavery, i.e., "it is an arbitrry institution, and contrary to natural liberty." At the time of cataloguing, we see no other copies on the market, with RBH showing just a single offering recorded in their database, that in 2009.

W Stone [David Ramsay Hay, Charles Darwin, John Baily]
London: Unpublished, 1850 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). [pp]66 (poultry); [pp]46 (colour theory); [pp]57 (legal) Manuscript notebook by a committed poultry breeder, reader and customer of Darwin's poulterer and dealer in live birds, John Baily, with a letter from Baily about 'confinement' of birds. In this fascinating work W Stone keeps copious notes of John Baily's published observations on poultry, most dated to the early 1850s, as well as inserting a letter from Baily and a fine printed broadside advertisement. At the other end of the manuscript is a lengthy fair copy of David Ramsay Hay's study of colour theory. Quarto-sized notebook, half calf over brown marbled boards, lacking backstrip, binding perfectly sound, 1834 fleur de lys watermarked paper. Writing from one end of the manuscript Stone begins with brief notes on 'Baileys Reg.d Poultry Fountain' and one of Baily's published works, The Dorking Fowl. This is followed by 56 pages of legal 'Articles of Agreement' between 'R.B.' and 'E.B.' apparently pre-Victorian. The meat of the manuscript comes in the 'Miscellaneous' section, dated to 1852, which begins with a brief entry on 'Food for silk worms', a series of inserted printed pages on poultry breeding, some annotated, followed by a fine illustrated broadside advertisement for a 'Poultry House' built by Robert Richardson of London (38x23cm, folded across a double spread). In manuscript there follows 'The Poultry-yard by Boswell (review of)' and lengthy commonplace notes, many initialled 'J[ohn] B[aily]' and dated on aspects of poultry manure, bre … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rare complete.

Hardcover. . Very Good. N.d., circa 1850. Folio. 33.5 by 25.5 cm. Hand-colored lithographed title page followed by 30 numbered lithographed hand-colored plates. A send-up of the can-can craze that had swept Paris at the time. Illustrations accompanied by humorous captions, which generally aren't necessary for an appreciation of the illustration and its point. Note that not all copies of this work have hand-coloring. This copy is richly hand-colored, in our view. Condition: later binding, with cloth spine and marbled paper pastedown on boards. Scattered, mostly light, foxing. A few short marginal closed tears.
