NY: Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning, nd [ca.1850's]. Broadside, 78 x 59 cm. Hand colored lithograph, with circular vignettes of 31 state seals, plus both sides of the Great Seal of the United States, all positioned on "branches" of the tree. At the base of the tree are three figures representing American strengths in agriculture, trade, and skilled workmanship. Two other vignettes, in small rectangles on either side of the figures, show the landing of Columbus at San Salvador, West Indies, and the pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock. Information on each state seal includes that state's population in 1850; California's population is given for 1853 as well. Archival repairs to a few cracks and short tears, infilled with Japanese paper, restoration to both upper outer corners (not affecting image), then lined with Japanese paper. Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning were well known publishers of maps, gazetteers, and travel guides. They also produced a broadside of the Declaration of Independence, ca.1858, utilizing vignettes of the seals of the thirteen original states. No listings found on OCLC.

Grimoires ] Anonymous.
Garfardo Buffanelli [ Imprimerie de Blocquel ] ND [ 1850 ?], Milan [ Lille ]. Hardcover. Small Ocatvo. (iv) 108pp ( ii). Later speckled papered boards, printed paper spine label, fresh endpapers. Frontispiece and title page in black and red, 4 full page black and white woodcut plates and diagrams, various illustrations in-text. Although consecutively paginated the text is divided into two "books," with a second title page following page 54 headed: "Le Sanctum Regum ou la Véritable Manière de Faire les Pactes, Avec qulque Esprit que ce Soit, Sans qu'il vois puisse faire aucun torte." Text mostly in French, with some passages in Italian and Latin. An extremely unusual version of the `renowned grimoire "Le Dragon Rouge." This edition is immediately recognizable by the apparently spurious imprint "A Milan, chez Gaspardo Buffanelli" on the title page (the imprint in the colophon, "Lille - Imprimerie De Blocquel" suggesting that its true origins are in France rather than Italy) and by the truncated crocodile design also on the title page (the crocodile was equated with the Nile, which was equated with Egypt, legendary source of ancient magical wisdom). Curiously, with most sources identifying this edition as ca. 1850 it was certainly not the earliest published version of the work, yet it seems to contain the text in its most basic form. Unlike some earlier versions it does not include the text of the "Poulet Noire" or the "Table of Auspicious and Inauspicious Days," and also omits many of the folk magic spells and remedies, for purposes like winning the favour of a judge, curing … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Thomas D. Rice]
Baltimore: G. Willig, Jun'r, 1850. Wraps. Very good. Sheet music with 8-pages including the cover. Complete. Six songs: Zip Coon (Turkey in the Straw0, Jim Brown, Sittin on a Rail, Jim Crow, Clare de Kitchen, and Sich a Getting Up Stairs). The front cover features a series of blackface character illustrations. The music is in very nice shape; light toning. Once bound so a little rough along the left edge. Thomas "Daddy" Rice, the "father of American minstrelsy," was a white performer who firs donned his black-faced, Jim Crow persona in 1828 during a New York song-and-dance routine. Rice claimed his routine was inspired by a stable hand named Jim Crow whom he saw performing a song and jig, after which he purchased the man's ragged clothing and adapted his dance routine for the stage. Rice's performance took first New York and then the entire country by storm. Others imitated Rice's act in increasingly elaborate shows, and minstrels became the most important and popular form of American entertainment during the 19th century. Several versions of "The Crow Quadrilles" were published between 1834 and 1850, and their precedence is untetermined. This example is one of two that included six Rice songs. Its front cover shows Rice performing as Jim Crow in the center, a blackface marching band, and several other characters including Zip Coon and Long Tail Blue. A black crow with a human face (possibly a portrait of Rice without burnt cork) surmounts the other illustrations. While all versions of "The Crow Quadrilles" are scarce, this edition is mus less common than the others. As of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tiny scuffs to the reverse of two other cards .Provenance: Harrie A. Kenter, Amsterdam. Soon, she became quite popular and is said to have been consulted by Napoleon, Robespierre, Jospehine, Marat, Czar Alexander, and other. Two years after her death in 1843, a 54-card deck, "Grand jeu de Mlle Lenormand," was published anonymously in Paris along with "her" instructions for reading cards. Around 1850, playing card makers in Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland began producing "Petit Lenormand" cards based on a 36-card piquet deck with symbols from a fortune-telling pack first published around 1800; Édouard Develuy was among-if not the-first to do so. See Chatto (1848) p 324, Van Resseler (1912) pp 367-374, and Caitlín Matthews's Soundings, 28 April 2012. Quite scarce, although modern reprints ar … [Click Below for Full Description]
