Delavan, James]
New York, 1850. [3]-128pp. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Front wrapper, titlepage, two plates, and final text leaf provided in facsimile. Internally clean and tightly bound. A decent copy (though with the titlepage, final two pages, and plates in facsimile) of a gold rush rarity. Delavan travelled to California via Panama, made a quick fortune in the mines, and saw quite a bit of the rest of the region, including San Francisco and Sacramento. "This is one of the earliest diaries kept by an actual Gold Hunter and gives an unusually frank and detailed account of daily life at the diggings. Delavan was one of the original Feather River Party of '49 and struck it rich at Rocky Bar, where in less than three weeks he took out over 100 pounds of the yellow metal. His book describes the trip to California - the San Francisco of 1849; extravagant prices; the Gaming Halls; the fortunes won and lost; life and observations in Benicia; Embarcadero (Sacramento); Sutter's Fort; Culloma (sic); Mormon Island; Volcano Bar; Spanish Bar; Kelsey's Bar; Feather River; North Fork; Rector's Bar; San Joaquin; Stockton; Monterey, etc. Other sections of the book deal with the 'Code Lynch,' the Oregon immigration; the Indian Tribes; their depredations, etc.; methods of mining; traders and trading posts; kaleidoscopic conditions; manners and customs; routes; and advice to emigrants" - Eberstadt. "One of the most spirited accounts of the journey to California and life in the mines" - Kurutz. Very scarce on the market, with only the Clifford- Volkmann copy having appeared at au … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dickens Charles
Bradbury & Evans, 1850. First edition. With 39 illustrations by H. K. Browne 8vo, contemporary three-quarter black-green morocco over marbled boards, very handsomely tooled in gilt on the raised bands of the spine, lettered in gilt in two compartments. xiv, 624. A very handsome copy, quite fine, and with only some mild, unobtusive evidence of age to the covers and with much, much less than the usual toning to the plates. FINE FIRST EDITION. For many lovers of the author's works, DAVID COPPERFIELD ranks as the finest of his writings. "Of all my books," Dickens wrote, "I like this the best; like many fond parents I have my favourite child, and his name is David Copperfield." It is certainly Dickens' most personal and autobiographical work, especially in the remarkable early chapters describing David's provincial upbringing and his experiences in the bleak warehouses of London. Abounding in vivid characters such as Uriah Heep, Betsy Trotwood, Mr. Micawber, the Pegottys and Mr. Dick, DAVID COPPERFIELD continues to rank among Dickens' most popular and critically acclaimed works. In this work, Dickens displays his talents well: "his inordinate gift of observation, his sympathy with the humble, his power over the emotions and his incomparable endowment of unalloyed human fun...It gave what were then universally referred to as 'the lower orders' a new sense of self-respect, a new feeling of citizenship. Like the defiance of another Luther, or the Declaration of a new Independence, it emitted a fresh ray of hope across the firmament." [EB] In this way, Dickens' work is significant o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Margoliouth, Rev. Moses
London: Richard Bentley, 1850. First edition. Hardcover. g. Quarto. XV, [1], 438, XVI, 437, [1]pp. Uncut. Original blind-stamped cloth, with gold lettering on spines. Engraved frontispiece in each volume. Remarkable illustrated account of the author's journey to the Holy Land, with descriptions of ancient and modern Jewish culture in France, Malta, Tunisia, Constantinople, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine; Moses Margoliouth was a learned and respected minister in the Church of England of the nineteenth century. As his name might indicate, he was also of Jewish extraction. Born in Suwalki, Poland in 1818, he arrived in England in 1837 and converted to the Christian faith the following year. This work exemplifies the growing English interest in the biblical land of Israel during the 19th century and growing identification with the Nation of Israel, leading in this case to increased missionary activity, but also to a support of Zionism. Spines and edges age-toned. Tiny closed tears and minor abrasion at head and tail of spines. Small white stain on spine of first volume. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Bindings in overall fair to good-, interior in very good condition.

Gavarni, Paul [i. e. Chevalier, Sulpice Guillaume] / Méry, Joseph.
1850. Small folio. (4), 300 pp. With hand-coloured engr. frontispiece and 15 hand-coloured engr. plates with laced edges and tissue guards. Original giltstamped red cloth. All edges gilt. First edition. - Charming work of French fashion illustration, also depicting acessoires, jewels, and flower decorations. The 16 steel engravings are by Geoffroy, based on drawings by the much-sought Gavarni (1804-66), and depict "studies of beautiful women, fashionably attired for the most part, which were drawn in London. Méry wrote the 'fantasy' accompanying them to fit Gavarni's designs" (Ray). - This is the "appealing [...] special edition in which the steel engravings are printed and delicately colored on paper with borders cut to various lace patterns. So presented, Gavarni's designs become fashion plates of the first order" (ibid.). Another similarly designed volume was published that same year, a fact pointed at by the series title "Perles et Parues". - Slight foxing; tiny defects to spine-ends. Hungarian library stamp. Lipperheide Cm 9 (incomplete). Ray (French) 209A. Carteret III, 461. Vicaire 770f. Sander 469. OCLC 1533760. Not in Colas.

[c. 1850s]. Rare wrought iron shackle with a barrel type locking mechanism. This type of restraint was primarily used on South Carolina plantations to restrict the movement of high risk, runaway slaves. The complete shackle with links and lock is approximately 23 inches long. The pins are four and three inches long. Excellent patina. Fine condition.Deaccessioned from a museum. From the letter of authenticity: “Large Hand Forged South Carolina Slave Shackle: Circa 1850’s. Rare Wrought Iron Shackle with a barrel type locking mechanism. There is an imprint on the shackle (FM) that represents the initials of the plantation owner. The chain consists of eight (8) small forged links, consistent with pre-1863 technology. Such restraint was used on a large plantation to restrict movement on a high risk (runaway) person while working on the plantation or hire out to another plantation. Excellent patina surface on the metal. This is to certify that the Slave Shackle accompanying this certificate is authentic as described, and was carefully researched through all available sources of information. This is an historical piece of history from the African Slave Trade during the 1800’s...” The F and M are cut into the lock to indicate ownership should the slave escape.

London: Edward Moxon, 1850. First Edition. Leatherbound. Very good +. x, 374, [1] p. 22 cm. Burgundy leather binding with gold impressing, signed by Winstanley, Manchester. All edges gilt. Light wear to extremeties. A little foxing to first and last pages. Ink inscription on a front endpaper. The Prelude is an extremely personal and revealing work about the details of Wordsworth's life. The poet began the work in 1798 at the age of 28 and continued to work on it throughout his life. He never gave it a title but his letters to his sister Dorothy refer to it as "the poem on the growth of my own mind." The poem was unknown to the general public until published three months after Wordsworth's death in 1850, its final name given to it by his widow Mary. The Prelude is widely regarded as Wordsworth's greatest work. The publisher Edward Moxon (1801 – 1858) was significant in Victorian literature and William Wordsworth entrusted him with the publication of his works from 1835 onwards. This book has a very simple title page for a book published at the peak of a prosperous Victorian publisher's career, but the attractive binding by Winstanley makes up for the austere interior. The Winstanleys were a family of Victorian bookbinders active in Manchester, England until about 1881.

[Fugitive Slave Act]: Frazee, George
Burlington, Ia, 1850. 40pp. Original printed wrappers, rear lacking, removed from a bound volume. Later institutional ink stamps on titlepage, contemporary ownership inscription on front wrap. An occasional fox mark. Good plus. A scarce account of civil suit brought in an Iowa federal court over the issue of nine slaves escaped across the border from Missouri. Elihu Frazier, an anti-slavery Quaker, and several others, had assisted the slaves in escaping the ownership of Ruel Daggs. When Daggs could not recover his slaves through the employment of slave catchers, by intimidation via a large posse of angry Missourians, or through criminal prosecution owing to an unsympathetic judge, he lodged this suit. Eventually, four of the nine slaves ended up returned to Daggs' possession with the aid of pro-slavery elements in Iowa, and the defendants in this case were fined $2,900 in damages, although this was apparently never paid. "This pamphlet appears to be the only known record of this trial in the federal district court.... This was one of the last cases argued solely on the basis of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793. It was also one of the few fugitive slave cases heard in Iowa. Because this case was not officially reported, this pamphlet presents unique information on the fugitive slave issue in this western border state" - Finkelman. COHEN 11847. FINKELMAN, pp.79-80. Fuchs, Charles Friedrich)
Hamburg, Ch. Fuchs 1850. [Click Below for Full Description]
