Charles Dickens
1850. For sale is a VERY rare FIRST ISSUE of the First Edition of David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens. Published by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1850. A complete suite of plates by Phiz.624p.p. Bound in a scarce and fine publisher's deluxe half Morocco, over marbled boards. To the spine are raised bands, finely tooled in gilt, and the title and 'Chas. Dickens'. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. This fine and rare volume was also housed in the famous Self Collection, which contained some of the finest and most rare Dickens volumes. His bookplate is found to the front pastdown. Externally the spine and boards are largely bright, with only occasional extraneous light wear, commensurate with age, in places. Internally it is refreshingly very clean, and and one of the brightest examples we have handled. The plates have the predictable odd spot in places. The publisher released volumes bound in cloth, half Morocco, and full Morocco. The cloth was the cheapest option for buyers of the time of printing, and then a price premium was put on the half Morocco and full Morocco. Owing to books then being the preserve of only the educated, relatively few were printed and bound, by comparison to volumes published into the C20th. The half Morocco and full Morocco being expensive at the time, resulted in fewer being produced, and therefore they are far more scarce than the original cloth is even now. Gimble, the esteemed Dickens bibliographer of the early C20th, and Kremers, who produced a fine work on Dickens a few years ago, both cover the publisher's half Morocco and full Morocc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Green, J[onathan]. H.
New York: William Taylor & Co., 1850. [2],240pp. Publisher's blindstamped brown cloth, gilt spine title. Corners lightly worn, spine ends chipped, slight fraying to lower edges of boards. Ownership inscription on titlepage. Minor foxing, small paper faults to lower edge of pp.117-120, no text affected. Overall, very good. In a red half morocco and cloth clamshell box, spine lettered in gilt. The rare first edition of Jonathan Green's memoirs, detailing his life as a gambler and then his swift reformation after twelve years as one of the most skilled players in the United States. Green was one of the most famous gamblers in mid-nineteenth century America; he's rumored to have won $23,000 in one night at the Chestnut Street Arcade, and he successfully plied his trade in gambling halls and riverboats from the northeast to Texas and beyond. After his reform, Green became an active crusader against illegal gambling, writing several important works exposing the tricks of the trade and encouraging rehabilitation from vice. The title of this particular work refers to his incarceration in the Tombs in New York following his arrest on accusations of obtaining "goods and money...under false pretences" by a shady business partner who had promised to sell his books. In the subsequent narrative of his vindication, he highlights his relative prominence in New York politics, his anti-gambling activities, and the support he received from judges and other notables, including Horace Greeley. He also describes the various tricks used by gamblers to fleece their victims. Interestingly, … [Click Below for Full Description]
