Botanical manuscript with pencil-drawings of plants.

19th century French manuscript with 15 very accurate pencil-drawings with their descriptions in a very neat handwriting. No place, no publisher (ca. 1850?). Small folio (33 x 25.5 cm). Half calf over pebbled boards with gilt borders, embossed initials "C. P" on front board, spine with gilt floral pattern and title "Botanique". All edges gilt.= The book deals with such plants as le Genevrier, Geranion, Scabieuse, Renouée, Phalaugere, etc., each beautifully and delicately drawn in pencil on large sheets with wide margins. All plates are tissue-guarded, and accompanied by a beautifully handwritten text leaf containing the taxonomy of the corresponding class and family, as well as descriptions of the family and related families. The source of these descriptions and illustrations is not known. It could well be an original manuscript meant for publication. Some leaf versos have the pencilled name C. Paradis in the top left corner. This matches the initials on the front board. The binding is professionally done by the Paris-based firm Chézaud & Braulart, "55 Rue de la Verrerie" (their small label on the front free endpaper verso). Boards with some light scuffing, gilt on monogram much rubbed, some light spotting to tissue guards, otherwise a clean and fine item, with drawings of the highest quality.

Album with a Collection of Scarce Satirical Pellerin Broadsides, Neatly Broken into Four Strips Each, from the Mid-19th Century.

Épinal: Imprimerie de Pellerin, possibly others, 1850s. First Edition presumed of individual pieces. Hardcover. Very Good. Delightful and whimsical send-up primarily of military life, the Crimean War, but also a whimsical depiction of acrobats and some other subjects. This album was compiled more or less contemporaneously with the issuance of them, as noted in a handwritten note mounted onto the first leaf's verso. Oblong, 18 by 44 cm. 48 hand-colored mounted panels, often highlighted with extra gilt, coming from twelve Pellerin broadsides. The original broadsides each had four lines, and thus what we have here is a dozen complete broadsides, with the presentation modified for this album. The broadside strips are 11 by 33 cm, and they are mounted on both sides of the blue leaves. Pellerin issued these kind of strips in three formats: black and white, hand-colored, and hand-colored with extra gilt, the third being the most expensive and desirable. The title of the broadsides are "A Propos des Russes", “Scènes Diverse du Siège de Sébastopol”, No. 1 and No. 3, “Messieurs les Cosaques”, “Les Bourgeois de Sébastopol”, “Les Français dans Sébastopol”, “L'Avenir des Russes”, “Les Distractions Militaires”, “La Guerre de Crimée”, “Les Inventeurs et les Inventions”, “Le Juif-Errant et les Russes”, and “Les Saltimbanques. The Tumblers”. Scarce, with the BNF not having most of the broadsides, according to its catalogue, Gallica. (Among those we couldn't locate at the BNF were "A Props des Russes", "L'Avenir des Russes", "Le Juif-Errant", "Les Bourgeois de Sebastopol," "Les Inventeurs", "Scenes Diverses . . . " and "Les Distractions Militaires". The hand-written note mentioned above is in French, dated 1947, and is from a father to his son. The father speaks of Pellerin and how such broadsides were issued during his own childhood, which spanned from 1872 to 1890. He also speaks to their scarcity, especially of the gilt-infused ones, and how much they cost back in the day. Moderate wear to the binding.

The Family Bible, With the Self-Interpreting and Explanatory Notes, and Marginal References of the Late Rev. John Brown, Minister of the Gospel, Haddington.

London John Kendrick 1850 - Thick 4to. (25 x 18 x 8 cm), 1373pp., engraved frontispiece of 'Rebekah At The Well' and three further plates, engraved armorial title (lightly offset from tissue-guard), text in double-columns, a few minor spots to first few pages, near- contemporary crushed morocco, covers with broad gilt panels, spine richly gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt, an excellent example. A most imposing large format family bible in an excellent state of preservation. John Brown (1754-1832), minister and theologian was of humble origins and little formal education, and worked as a shepherd in his early years. It was perhaps this background that led him to produce a well annotated bible intended to make it accessible to ordinary men and women: "The Self-Interpreting Bible remained in print until the twentieth century, in much revised form. Brown transferred lists, tables, and other such aids from his dictionary. The Bible was a far more substantial work, which did not prevent its becoming, as Robert Burns bore out, as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Thomas Boston's Human Nature in its Fourfold State. Brown's text was furnished with a battery of cross-references, minor marginal notes, short introductions to each book, a summary of contents at the head of each chapter, 'reflections' on each chapter—in effect applying its message to readers—and explanatory footnotes. A lengthy introduction deals with the Bible's authority and inspiration, its interpretation, and biblical history from creation. All were intended, as the title made clear, to make the Bible accessible to the humblest reader, unlike much biblical scholarship today" (ODNB). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Veduta prospettica di Venezia ("panorama")

Venezia: Giuseppe Kier, S.d. (ma circa 1850) - Litografia a due colori (nero su fondo grigio) di mm 1890 x 290. Foglio in perfette condizioni.

Moulins [France] : P.A. Desrosiers Imprimeur Editeur, [1850]. Oblong quarto, original illustrated full vellum (some marking and staining), pp [12], [12] leaves of lithographic plates in two tints; occasional very mild foxing, otherwise a clean, firmly bound and desirable copy of this seldom seen work. Not in Sabin; Forbes, 1766. 'This is a very rare album of handsome and romantic views ... ' Forbes. The French travelling artist Auguste Borget had been a pupil of Gudin, the official artist of the Marine Nationale. In the 1840s he undertook a voyage that led him to North America, Latin America, the Near East, the Far East and Oceania. This album contains lithographs after his own drawings made during this voyage, and includes a lithographed title page and twelve full-page plates designed and lithographed in two different tints by Borget himself. Each plate is accompanied by a page of letterpress describing the scene in the artist's words. The subjects are as follows: 1. Windmill on the banks of the Hudson River, opposite New York. 2. Notre Dame de Gloire, Rio de Janeiro. 3. A street in Buenos Aires. 4. Ravine in the Sierra de Cordova, South America. 5. A street in Lima, Peru. 6. Chileans on the plain of Santiago. 7. Watering place at Arequipa, Peru. 8. Street and market in Canton, China. 9. Honolulu waterfront, Oahu, Sandwich Islands. 10. Fishing craft on the Bolivian coast. 11. Bridge and village of Passig, 6 leagues from Manilla, Philippines. 12. Clive Street, Calcutta. Worthy of note is the fact that the explanatory leaf for plate 10 is present. Forbes, having only been able to view two copies of this work, both of which lacked this leaf, expressed doubt as to its existence: 'Neither copy appears ever to have had this sheet, and it may well be that it was never issued.' Yet here it is, making the copy we offer here all the more exceptional for its completeness. Unrecorded in Australian collections.

Dickinson, a U.S. Senator from New York, concerning the trial of Reuben Withers Jr. for the murder in California of an African-American named "Bones." Sherwood, a signer of the California Constitution of 1849, candidate for governor, and later district judge, the letter introduces Reuben Withers's brother, New Orleans banker Dunham Withers, and asks Sherwood to make sure Reuben receives a fair trial. Reuben Withers Sr. was president of the Bank of New York; his son Dunham was a representative to the southern states for the New York banking firm of Howland & Aspinwall. David Dunham Withers of New Orleans was a noted thoroughbred horseman and president of the racing organization that became the Jockey Club. Senator Daniel S.       DSB VIII, pp. 64-65; Hannavy (ed.), Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography, pp. 13 & 1081. First and only edition, rarely seen on the market, of a highly acclaimed and richly illustrated collection of writings on aerial photography and photogrammetry, by a pioneer in the field. From the 1840s onward, Laussedat, an engineer in the French Army, had experimented with the possibilities provided by lenses for accurate mapping. With the help of a camera lucida, he produced a topographic map in 1850. Laussedat realised the possibilities which photography provided, but also knew that existing cameras were not suitable for mapping purposes "due to their narrow fields of view and lack of calibrated orientation. He therefore commissioned the Paris instrument maker Brunner to construct a camera to his specifications in 1859. ... The first topographic map was produced in 1861" (Hannavy). Six years later he presented the first map compiled from a stereographic aerial image. In the first volume of his Recherches , Laussedat gives an extensive description of the history and development of the science and instruments of surveying. In the second volume, which consists of two parts, he presents contemporary surveying. In the first part he describes the mathematical science of what he calls iconometry and metrophotography (modern photogrammetry). The second part describes the history and developments of photogrammetry in France and other European countries. With an inscription "Hommage de l'auteur" on the half-title of vol. 2. The binding worn at the extremities, notably at the spine, and with a few spots at the end of vol. 2; a good set.
