The Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles in Hindustání.Calcutta (Kolkata), The Bible Translation Society, American and Foreign Bible Society, 1850. 12mo. With the title in Hindustani (Urdu) and English, and the text in Urdu only. The pages procede from right to left like a normal book in Arabic type. Set in 2 sizes of Arabic type with the English title in roman capitals. Contemporary dark brown cloth.

Wesleyan Missionary notices, VIII (London, 1850), p. 199 (this edition?); WorldCat (2 copies). Rare Gospel of St Luke and Acts of the Apostles in the Hindustani (Urdu) language, in the Arabic script, printed by and for the Protestant Bible and missionary societies for free distribution in southern India. While India probably had more than 100,000 Urdu speakers at this date, few could read, so the book was published in an edition of 1500 copies (the edition size, with the year 1849, is printed at the foot of the first page of the main text: it was probably printed toward the end of 1849 for distribution in 1850, the year in the imprint). With a bookplate and an embossed stamp on the title-page and last two text leaves. Very slightly browned, but in very good condition. The binding cloth is cracked at the hinge and the backstrip damaged and secured with tape, but the binding is otherwise good. A rare Urdu missionary Bible text, in Arabic type.

        Representative Men: Seven Lectures.

Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1850. First edition, second state with the ads at end. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Signor Gajani - with the respects of RW Emerson." Emerson attended lectures by the visiting Professor Guglielmo Gajani at the Concord Lyceum in 1856 and 1857. Gajani had served in Mazzini's first government, and the earlier of the two lectures was on the failure of Republicanism in Italy; his book The Roman Exile, published in New York in 1856, was on this subject too. Mazzini spent much time in London in the 1850s and was a regular visitor to Emerson's friend Thomas Carlyle. Octavo, original brown cloth, spine gilt-lettered. An excellent example with light rubbing and crown of the spine chipped. Housed in a cloth chemise and a half morocco clamshell box. Representative Men is a collection of seven lectures by Ralph Waldo Emerson, published as a book of essays in 1850. The first essay discusses the role played by "great men" in society, and the remaining six each extoll the virtues of one of six men deemed by Emerson to be great. They included: Plato ("the Philosopher"), Emanuel Swedenborg ("the Mystic"), Michel de Montaigne ("the Skeptic"), William Shakespeare ("the Poet"), Napoleon ("the Man of the World") and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ("the Writer").

Hekiryu insai ha sha teki shu. [The book of Heki-Ryu Insai ha school archery target shooting] - illustrated manuscript in Japanese.

[Kyoto?: Yamazaki (compiler),, c.1850. Octavo-size (232 × 150 mm). 158-page manuscript, unpaginated, in a crisp, clear late Edo-style script, red and black inks, fukuro-toji, pocket-bound, in tendril-embossed blue paper wraps, calligraphic title label to front panel. Over 80 hand-coloured pen and ink illustrations throughout, many full-page, all with excellent detail, and with explicatory captioning. Some stripping and worming to the wraps, some very slight worming to head margin front and back, but remains a remarkable, bright exemplar. Wonderful late Edo-period manuscript on the archery of the Heki-ryu insai ha school, a branch of kyujutsu tracing its origins to the teachings of the semi-legendary master Heki Danjo Masatsugu (c.1440-1505). It is told that when HJeki Danjo was around forty "he had a revelation about the working of the bow which he called 'Hi, Kan, Chu' (Fly, Pierce, Centre). After experimenting with various ways of holding and drawing the bow, Heki Danjo discovered a new and devastatingly accurate method of shooting that completely revolutionised the course of Japanese archery. Prior to Heki Danjo, shooting styles varied greatly and there was little in the way of formalised teaching, especially in the case of battlefield technique. Archers mostly trained on their own, adopting whatever methods they felt were most effective. The samurai were quick to recognise the potential of Heki Danjo's shooting style, however, so it did not take long for the method to spread" (Onuma, De Prospero and De Prospero, Kyudo: The Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery, p.16). With the advent of firearms in the mid-sixteenth century, and the pacification of the warring factions under the Tokugawa shogunate in the early seventeenth century, the practical usefulness of archery waned, but its practice was encouraged with the development of kyudo as a "martial way", as opposed to the battlefield techniques of kyujustsu, with various schools, or ryu, forming, many claiming direct transmission from Heki Danjo . The present manuscript represents the teachings of the Hekiryu insai ha school, founded by Toshida Insai - who was Tokugawa Ieyasu's archery master, having himself been taught by Heki Danjo - and still extant today, and offers detailed guidelines on all aspects of archery: the creation of a kyudojo, similar to the famous Sanjusangendo (Hall of Thirty-three Bays) in Kyoto, still used for an annual Toshiyo, or archery contest; the types of target used; varieties of bow and arrow; the specifics of feathers for fletching; target areas for the hunting of boar and deer; the correct nocking of arrows; and the knotting of the bowstring. A richly-illustrated, and highly attractive, but entirely practical Japanese archery manual from the nineteenth century, such documents are far from common, particularly when so well-preserved.

        Virginia B. Pickett's Bound-Volume of Printed and Manuscript Sheet Music, circa 1850s -- 1860s

(Richmond, Virginia), 1850. Very Good. Folio. Quarter bound in contemporary blind-tooled morocco and marbled paper over boards, with Virginia Pickett's name stamped in gold on a red leather label on the front board, edges mottled red. Spine professionally re-backed with part of the original leather spine laid-down, overall surface abrasions, scattered foxing and staining, with intermittent tears to some scores, very good.A custom-bound volume of 18 early/mid-19th century piano-vocal sheet music scores and one manuscript score belonging to Virginia Beverley Pickett, sister of Confederate General George Pickett. With Virginia Picket's ownership signature in pencil on the front paste-down, and written in ink elsewhere throughout the volume on a few scores: "Jenny Pickett, Richmond, Va." Bound in at the back are two manuscript leaves of music with lyrics of a song by Thomas Moore: "Tell Me Not of Joys Alone", likely written in Pickett's hand. Also included are lyrics from Stephen Foster's song: Old Folks at Home written in manuscript (with interesting variations) on the back of a score, and manuscript lyrics of three other Irish songs by Thomas Moore. The printed scores and manuscript date from the early 1850s-1860s. An interesting association: Gen. George Pickett may well have enjoyed listening to his sister sing and play from this volume at the piano. Both are buried together in Hollywood cemetery, Richmond. A detailed list of the scores in the order in which they are bound follows, together with the manuscript lyrics:Manuscript Lyrics. A variant/custom version of lyrics from the song: Old Folks at Home are written in manuscript (in pencil) on the last page:Way down upon the Swanee ribber,Far, far away! There's where my heart is turning ebber,There's where the old folks stay! All round about the whole creation,Sadly I roam!Still longing for the old plantation,And for the Old folks at home! All the world am sad and dreary,Every where I roam!Oh! Darkies how my heart grows weary,Far from the Old folks at home! One little hut among the bushes,So dear to me!Note: Old Folks at Home (also known as "Swanee Ribber") is a minstrel song written by Stephen Foster in 1851. Three stanzas of: I Saw From the Beach (Thomas Moore/Irish Melody) neatly copied in manuscript on a blue sheet laid-down on the last blank page. I Saw From The BeachI saw from the beach, when the morning was shining, A bark o'er the waters move gloriously on; I came when the sun o'er that beach was declining, The bark was still there, but the waters were gone. And such is the fate of our life's early promise, So passing the spring-tide of joy we have known; Each wave that we danced on at morning ebbs from us, And leaves us, at eve, on the bleak shore alone.Ne'er tell me of glories, serenely adorningThe close of our day, the calm eve of our night; -Give me back, give me back the wild freshness of morningHer clouds and her tears are worth evening's best light.8.         Hekiryu insai ha sha teki shu. [The book of Heki-Ryu Insai ha school archery target shooting] - illustrated manuscript in Japanese.

[Kyoto?: Yamazaki (compiler), c.1850 - Octavo-size (232 × 150 mm). 158-page manuscript, unpaginated, in a crisp, clear late Edo-style script, red and black inks, fukuro-toji, pocket-bound, in tendril-embossed blue paper wraps, calligraphic title label to front panel. Some stripping and worming to the wraps, some very slight worming to head margin front and back, but remains a remarkable, bright exemplar. Over 80 hand-coloured pen and ink illustrations throughout, many full-page, all with excellent detail, and with explicatory captioning.

Borneo. Remarks on a Recent ?Naval Execution?.

1850 - First edition. Folding, partly coloured map & lithograph plate. 8vo. Modern binding of quarter calf with cloth boards and leather spine label, gilt on black, map is very slightly torn at the margin, without loss, very good indeed. 47pp. London, Effingham Wilson, Scarce. Napier's strident attack on James Brooke, the first Raja of Sarawak. Brooke's rise to power was partly due to the favour he gained through an ongoing campaign against the Dayaks who had formed alliances with the sultan of Brunei's sherifs and were assisting in pirate raids as far north as Sumatra. The most notorious of these occured on the night of 31 July 1849, when Brooke engaged Captain Arthur Farquhar's ships to attack the Dayaks of the Saribas. The battle of Beting Marau at the mouth of the Saribas resulted in the killing of over 1000 Dayaks. Napier wrote out of concern that Brooke's actions weren't attracting sufficient notice in the English press. As such he outlines Brooke's ascent to power and various qualifications that he sought to overcome in his campaign. He reprints notices from Thomas Cochrane condemning piracy in the region and cites articles from the Illustrated London News, Journal of the Indian Archipelago and the Singapore Free Press. Napier minutely examines the accounts of the punitive expedition and questions Brooke's actions at every point. The maps is titled: ?Sketch chart of part of the north west coast of Borneo exhibiting the relative positions of the British settlement of Labuan the territory of Sarawak and the precise locality of the surprise and massacre of the Sarebas and Sakarran Dyaks, on the Night of July 31st 1849.? The plate illustrates the massacre. A number of tip-in slips with Donald Hawley's manuscript notes are inserted. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Broadside]: Declaration of Sentiments of the Colored Citizens of Boston, on the Fugitive Slave Bill!!!

Boston: Printed [by George C. Jenks] at no. 86 Hanover Street, 1850. Near Fine. Broadside. Measuring 16" x 23". Includes an "Address to the Clergy of Massachusetts." Some modest offsetting and toning, narrow chip in one fold, slightly affecting four words in two lines at the margin, else a nice crisp and near fine copy. According to the text "... the Friends of Freedom rallied at Belknap Street Church, on Friday evening, October 5th, 1850, a vast concourse, including fugitives and their friends were in attendance... ." Signed in type by both Hayden and Nell.William C. Nell was a noted black author and abolitionist and fierce opponent of the Fugitive Slave Law, who wrote for The Liberator and later published The North Star. He created the Committee of Vigilance in Boston, whose members swore to aid escaped slaves against enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Bill. He was the first black man to hold a job in the Civil Service of the U.S., and wrote several important works of African-American history. Lewis Hayden was an escaped slave from Kentucky who became a lecturer, politician, and abolitionist who worked for the American Anti-Slavery Society and maintained a stop on the Underground Railroad. According to the American National Biography: "After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Hayden worked tirelessly to fight its enforcement... As a member of the executive board of the Boston Vigilance Committee, which was created to aid and protect fugitive slaves in the city, he often functioned as a liaison between white and black activists, including members of the Twelfth Baptist Church, to which he belonged. He personally fed and housed hundreds of runaways and used his clothing store to outfit many more."A rare and striking broadside. OCLC appears to locate four copies - three of them in Massachusetts (and noting substantial damage to at least a couple of the copies).

eigenh. farb. kalligraphierter Brief m. aquarellierter Federzeichnung u. Unterschrift.

Pruntrut (franz. Porrentruy), 17. XII. 1850. - Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 500 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
