        Eigenh. Brief mit U. O. O., 18. I., o. J.

5 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblättern. 8vo.

Original decorated card box, 215 x 125 mm (splits to corners), with printed paper label hand coloured, owner's name in ink on front panel, containing the folding globe, two printed colour cards showing the revolution of the Earth around the Sun, and the 32 page booklet, A companion to Betts's portable globe and diagrams, together with Catalogue of maps, atlases, dissected maps, amusing, instructive, and educational games, etc., etc.. The globe is a rare survivor of the dissected form. The eight paper gores are suspended by string between two dowel rods (the lower one not present in this example); two sliding pins are squeezed together, inflating the gores to produce a three-dimensional globe of the world, accurate in theoretical principles.         Beauty & the Beast: An Extravaganza. Written for a Christmas, At Brown's Green, by the Author

Browns Green, Handsworth Wood, Birmingham, England: Privately Printed, 1850. Wraps. Good. Wraps. This rare dramatic retelling of Beauty & the Beast takes place between Baghdad and Cairo, where an Iraqi merchant in dire straits steals a rose from a bear and must send his favorite daughter (Beauty/Fatima) to live with the beast and his titmouse companion. Of particular interest are the many references to Railway Mania, a period of speculative frenzy in England during the 1840s. The merchant, Beauty's father, loses his fortune at the opening of this play due to a poor investment in railway construction ("Ill fares the land, to railway ills a prey,/ Where railways are got up which will not pay;/ Shares they may rise or they again may fall,/ A goose-quill makes them with a single scrawl."). The beast, a prince turned into a bear by a magician, possesses a magic railway as well. Also of note are allusions to postal reformer Rowland Hill (1795-1879) and several songs to the tune of popular Scottish and Irish ballads. This play is written in rhymed iambic pentameter and boasts quite a few puns and several songs. Rare; no record in WorldCat at time of posting, and seemingly no reference online whatsoever. A truly unique item, particularly of interest to collectors of fairy tales, Victoriana, Orientalism, the Middle East, trains and railways, and economic history. 6" X 3 3/4". 41pp. No date of publication, circa 1850s. Presumed English authorship. Red cloth over sewn paper wraps, with title stamped in gilt to upper wrap. What appears to be inkstains to cloth, with "Beauty" penned to upper wrap. Cloth peeling from paper wrap, particularly at corners of rear wrap. All edges gilt. Some leaves coming loose from binding, which is in a delicate state. Soiling to endpapers, with name to front free endpaper. Surface tear to verso of front free endpaper. Occasional smudges to pages and inked and pencilled notes to character list, else unmarked.

Album showing Chinese military formations ["Five Stars and the Crescent"].

Beijing, Imperial Workshop, ca. 1850. - Folio (565 x 300 mm). With 9 large double-page hand-painted illustrations. Fan fold binding, crimson silk-covered wooden boards with the manuscript title (gilding faded) on front cover. Unique manuscript album in accordion format showing Chinese military formations and drills. "Five Stars and the Crescent" (moon) may refer to a constellation or pattern of stars imitated by a military manoeuvre. The album was produced by court artists of the Imperial Workshop during a time when the Chinese army was facing rapid decline, both in terms of discipline and in terms of competing with Western military techniques. Early during the Taiping Rebellion, Qing forces suffered a series of disastrous defeats culminating in the loss of the regional capital city of Nanjing in 1853. Shortly thereafter, a Taiping expeditionary force penetrated as far north as the suburbs of Tianjin in what was considered the Imperial heartlands. In desperation the Qing court ordered a Chinese mandarin, Zeng Guofan, to organise regional and village militias into a standing army called 'tuanlian' to contain the rebellion. Zeng Guofan's strategy was to rely on local gentries to raise a new type of military organisation from those provinces directly threatened by the Taiping rebels. This force, called the "Xiang Army", was a hybrid of local militia and standing army. In 1860 British and French forces in the Second Opium War captured Beijing and sacked the Summer Palace. The shaken court sought to modernise its military and industrial institutions by buying European technology. - The hand-written brush pen text for each illustration runs vertically to the top right side of each page as follows: "Drum is played on the general's stage and the bugle calls for the standing in line. Each captain of the five posts sees to the straightness of the line. Rules of the running array are followed. No one should talk and all should listen to the order. The line leader leads the mandarin-duck formation and then changes to a straight line". - Some wear to silk and boards, as commensurate with age. Minor repairs. Overall in very good condition.         Botanical manuscript with pencil-drawings of plants.

19th century French manuscript with 15 very accurate pencil-drawings with their descriptions in a very neat handwriting. No place, no publisher (ca. 1850?). Small folio (33 x 25.5 cm). Half calf over pebbled boards with gilt borders, embossed initials "C. P" on front board, spine with gilt floral pattern and title "Botanique". All edges gilt.= The book deals with such plants as le Genevrier, Geranion, Scabieuse, Renouée, Phalaugere, etc., each beautifully and delicately drawn in pencil on large sheets with wide margins. All plates are tissue-guarded, and accompanied by a beautifully handwritten text leaf containing the taxonomy of the corresponding class and family, as well as descriptions of the family and related families. The source of these descriptions and illustrations is not known. It could well be an original manuscript meant for publication. Some leaf versos have the pencilled name C. Paradis in the top left corner. This matches the initials on the front board. The binding is professionally done by the Paris-based firm Chézaud & Braulart, "55 Rue de la Verrerie" (their small label on the front free endpaper verso). Boards with some light scuffing, gilt on monogram much rubbed, some light spotting to tissue guards, otherwise a clean and fine item, with drawings of the highest quality.
