BANVARD; OR THE ADVENTURES OF AN ARTIST; A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH [wrapper title].

London: Printed by Reed and Pardon, []. 1850 - [20]pp. Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers lightly chipped around edges. Internally clean. Very good. A scarce biography and promotional pamphlet for John Banvard, the American painter, panoramist, and promoter whose lasting fame came from the massive panorama of the Mississippi River that he created and toured in America and Europe. This pamphlet, which provides extensive biographical information on Banvard, was created to promote his latest venture, an exhibition of paintings of the Old World and Palestine that were on view at the Hall of Art in Boston. The rear wrapper contains a distinguished set of endorsements of Banvard's work, from the likes of Edward Everett, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Charles Dickens, Bayard Taylor, and Queen Victoria, who had seen Banvard's Mississippi panorama via a command performance at Windsor Castle in 1849. The DAB dates the present London edition of this pamphlet to 1851, though it seems more likely that it was printed in 1850, the same year as the Paris edition. Banvard spent much of 1850 touring the Holy Land, conducting research for his paintings. An imprint line on the rear wrapper indicates that this pamphlet was actually printed in Boston. OCLC locates at total of only four copies. Scarce. SABIN 3225 (Paris ed. only). OCLC 81499447, 26517819.

        Household Words

Office., Wellington Street, London. 1850 - 19 Volumes COMPLETE. From March 30th 1850 to May 28th 1859 a total of 479 issues with All the Christmas "Supplements" and the rarer "The Household Narrative" (On Politics, Crime and Statistics of events of the month or year), which was only published in the early numbers 1850-1851. All bound in the original drab olive green cloth blind stamped cloth, although several volumes are in plain cloth and are a variant green or light charcoal, so not quite uniform. It did happen that at the end of the year the binder may not have had any of the matching cloth, a more common occurrence than acknowledged today. There are a few pages with foxing, mainly on the prelims and odd title page, and hinges showing on volume 1. And perhaps slightly or less on a few others. The contents are in the main though excellent and these were stored in a wooden case for over 50 years. Paper although a cheap quality is all very good and except for a few pages all clean and tight and not brittle or flaky. A MOST complete set, no missing parts. RARE! *This series of Dickens's 1st edited magazine has some FAMOUS writers and books in the series as a whole, all FIRST editions, pre-book format. Including; North and South and Memory at Cranford by Mrs Gaskell and the often missed great mstyery "The Dead Secret" by Wilkie Collins.         A Complete and Universal Dictionary of Signals for Boats of Her Majesty's Fleet: Well Adapted for Yachts, the Merchant Service, Military Posts, Signal Stations and Railroad, either in Communication with each other, or in Connection with the Royal Navy of England. Containing New and Simple Modes of Signalizing. Compiled and Invented with the Sanction and under the Especial Patronage of the Admiralty.

London: W.J. Cleaver, 1850 - Duodecimo (146 × 86 mm). Contemporary polished calf presentation binding, green morocco label to the spine, low flat bands with gilt dotted roll, compartments attractively gilt with drawer handle tools, paired double fillet panels, gilt and in blind to both boards, gilt block of a sailor employing the "homograph" system of signalling gilt to the front board, foliate edge-roll, edges and endpapers marbled. Externally just a little rubbed, overly heavy front free endpaper loose, but hinges entirely sound, pale browning, a very good copy indeed. First 24 pages entirely lithographed with diagrams of semaphore, homograph and flag signalling, 11 of them with hand-colouring. First edition, this a prepublication presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the first blank; "Mrs. Holt with the author's most affectionate love, November 1849". The recipient was possibly Jemima Arabella, the author's aunt who married Sir John Holt. Extremely uncommon, OCLC shows just 6 locations for this first edition - BL, NLS, Oxford, Cambridge, NMM, Texas A & M - there were three subsequent editions which are equally as uncommon. Eardley-Wilmot was the fourth son of Sir John Eardley Eardley-Wilmot, Bart., MP for Warwickshire and Governor of Van Diemen's Land, present day Tasmania, by his first wife Elizabeth Emma, sister of the Arctic explorer Admiral Parry. He entered the Royal Naval College in 1828, and first embarked as First Class Volunteer on the Wolf, 18, Capt. William Hamley, in 1830, sailing for the East Indies "where we find him engaged, in unison with a fleet of Siamese proas, in various operations against Malay pirates, and present in particular at the blockade of the fortress of Quedah. He was also at Canton in the early part of 1832, when the Chinese first displayed symptoms of insolence and aggression" (O'Byrne). Subsequently saw service in the Miguelite Wars; in the Pacific "affording protection to to British property in the Sandwich Islands, [and] security to missionary interests at the Marquesas"; with Napier on the coast of Syria and at the blockade of Alexandria; and in China towards the end of the First Opium War. He rose to the rank of Rear Admiral, retired 1873, died 1881. He also published a guide for young officers, The Midshipman's Friend; or, Hints for the Cockpit, 1845, and a contribution to the manning debate, Manning the Navy - a Statement in which the Evils and Losses of the Present System are set forth, 1849. A highly attractive copy of this rarely encountered, compendious publication, an excellent source for signalling techniques of the period. Not in Craig [Attributes: First Edition]

Aspect Général de Londres, vue prise de l'Abbaye de Westminster].

Paris Appert. c. 1850 - Engraving with aquatint. Dimensions: 515 by 830mm (20.25 by 32.7 inches). The high vantage point is one of the towers of Westminster Abbey; the view of the Abbey in the foreground was ingeniously fabricated rather than observed. It does not show Victoria Street, opened 1851. Two mysterious tents are to be seen on the Lambeth waterfront between Westminster and Hungerford Bridges. Trains run to Waterloo Station, opened in 1848. The author of the print is, in later editions, given as 'Chapuis' [sic], but it seems more likely to have been the topographical draughtsman and lithographer Nicolas-Marie-Joseph Chapuy than any other artist spelling his name in the same way. The French-looking red-tiled roofs in the foreground suggest a foreigner's unfamiliarity with the English scene. A related drawing, measuring 532 by 1485mm. (21 by 58.5") was auctioned at Christies, 21 June 1974 (lot 167), and a related oil painting measuring 546 by 1498mm. (21.5 by 59") was auctioned at Christies South Kensington on 5 September 2002. It was purchased by Christopher Wood. This painting was a copy of the sixth state of the print. The print appears to be one of a series of bird's-eye views of major European cities: an 'Aspect Général de Rome' by Appert, an 'Aspect Général de Naples' by Appert after A. Testard, and an 'Aspect Général de Paris' after A. Testard have all been seen. The Bibliothèque Nationale's 'Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1808, vol 1', lists an edition of the London 'Aspect' printed in 1857 by Chardon. It also mentions A. Appert bird's-eye view of St. Petersburg. The Fogg Art Museum has a proof before letters, the image of which appears to correspond with this. The present example is in the fifth state (of seven) with King's Cross Station added. Barbican Art Gallery 'The Image of London' - Views by Travellers and Emigrés 1550-1920' (London: Trefoil Publications, 1987), 121, p145. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Salt Print Photograph of an Elderly African-American Woman

, 1850. 1850. Very Good. Oval salt print photograph mounted on decorated card mount. Image is approximately 5.25" x 7.25" at its widest points. Some soiling and small nicks or tears on the mount, slight evidence of mounting on the verso, else nice and near fine. Image of an elderly African-American woman with one elbow resting on a table, wearing a turban, and holding a kerchief. The image has been slightly enhanced, probably contemporarily, with ink and wash on the hair, turban, tablecloth, and on the dress. Sadly no additional information is obvious, and annoyingly, old pencil notes on the verso have been erased. Salt print photography was invented in 1839, and was popular up until about 1860. A striking image.

Captain Austin's expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. Intrepid. Resolute. Assistance. Pioneer.

circa 1850 - Linen broadside (50 x 36 cm) produced on the departure of the Austin Search Expedition, printed in red, large pictorial image with text and portrait vignette beneath, decorative border, light fold marks, an excellent example. A rare and highly decorative piece of memorabilia commemorating a chapter in the best known of Arctic searches. The broadside describes and illustrates the hydrogen balloons: "Should the wind prove favourable on arriving at the edge of the ice, these natural messengers will be sent up to announce the approach of the searching expedition." In 1850, Austin (1801-65), was appointed leader of the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition, 1850-51, serving as captain of HMS Resolute, sent by the Admiralty to search for Sir John Franklin's missing Northwest Passage expedition by way of Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound. During the expedition, Erasmus Ommanney discovered the first evidence that Franklin had in fact reached the Canadian Arctic. The expedition also conducted extensive coastal surveys and observations of topography, geology, fauna and meteorology. Sotheby's recently (30th September 2014) sold a copy of this broadside, described by them as "unrecorded", for £9375 as part of the Franklin Brooke-Hitching collection.

Franzow & Nitche Odessa s 1850 - Collection of 8 lithographed prints, sheet 21 x 28 cm, image ca. 10 x 19 cm; some light soiling. A series of fine lithographed views of Odessa by the Simferopol born artist. Born in 1822 in the family of a German colonist and artist Johann Ludwig, Friedrich (Feodor) Gross, moved to Odessa in the 1840s, where he started working at the printmaking studio of Alexander Braun. Despite the competitive environment of the capital of the Novorossiysk region, which was home to many prominent painters, works of the young artist got noticed and received recognition from the demanding public. Such support enabled him to publish an album titled "Vidy Krima" [Views of Crimea] in 1846, which included 54 plates that he lithographed himself after his paintings. Another artist's project was a series of views of Odessa that included "Richelieu Lyceum", "View on the Prakticheskaya harbour", "Quarantine", "Boulevard" and many more. In 1854-55 a local publisher Frantsev & Nitchean issued an album with his fifteen selected views of Odessa. In 1857 Gross returned back to Crimea and settled in Kerch, where he worked at the local museum of antiquities eventually becoming its director. "The name of Feodor Ivanovich Gross has only recently been recovered from the oblivion. Now he can be rightfully called one of the first native Crimean artists, who dedicated his life to celebrating the beauty of his native land " (M.R. Malgina, "Zhivopisnaya Tavrida. Litografii XIX veka" [Picturesque Tavrida. Lithographs of XIX century]. Sonat, 2011). List of views: - Rue Preobrajenskaia [?????????????? ?????]; - Descente, au port de pratique [????? ? ???????????? ??????]; - Vue de l'église Pakrowskaja, perspective d'Alexandre [??? ?????????? ??????]; - La Quarantaine [??????????? ???]; - Maison du Comte Tolstoi, rue Preobrajenskaia [??? ????? ????????, ????? ??????????????]; - Vue d'Odessa prise près de la douane [??? ??????]; - La Cathédrale [?????]; - Place du Théâtre [??????????? ???????].

A Complete and Universal Dictionary of Signals for Boats of Her Majesty's Fleet:

London: W.J. Cleaver,, 1850. Well Adapted for Yachts, the Merchant Service, Military Posts, Signal Stations and Railroad, either in Communication with each other, or in Connection with the Royal Navy of England. Containing New and Simple Modes of Signalizing. Compiled and Invented with the Sanction and under the Especial Patronage of the Admiralty. Duodecimo (146 × 86 mm). First 24 pages entirely lithographed with diagrams of semaphore, homograph and flag signalling, 11 of them with hand-colouring. Externally just a little rubbed, overly heavy front free endpaper loose, but hinges entirely sound, pale browning, a very good copy indeed.

Fifth editions of Layard's path-breaking first two books, a handsomely bound set. Apart from the archaeological value of his work in identifying Kouyunjik as the site of Nineveh, and in providing a great mass of materials for scholars to work upon Layard's works are among the best written books of travel in the language. Layard spent some time among the tribes of the Bakhtiari Mountains, and became proficient in Arabic and Persian. He returned to Constantinople in 1842 and entered the employment of British ambassador Stratford Canning, whom he persuaded to support his excavations at the mount of Nimrud, near Mosul. His archaeological achievement was remarkable. He uncovered three palaces, most importantly that of Ashurnbanipal II, and many notable objects including the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III and several pairs of human-headed winged lions and bulls . In the last few weeks of this period Layard began excavations at Kuyunjik, nearer Mosul, and quickly discovered the largest Assyrian palace, that of Sennacherib" (idem). After publication he realised that Nimrud was not the site of ancient Nineveh, as he had claimed, but that Kuyunjik was. He rejoined the embassy staff at Constantinople in 1849, and from then until 1851 undertook further excavations at Kuyunjik, which "yielded further important trophies and discoveries, including the cuneiform library of Sennacherib's grandson Ashurbanipal. These have all been destroyed by ISIS and these books have the best description of Nineveh to this day

        11 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Besancon, 1849-1850. - Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 500 [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Cartoons of Raphael

England: BRADSHAW & BLACKLOCK, Licensees, 1850. VG, see details below. Presented between two boards covered in brown cloth, 1/2 leather (spine gone, boards thus are loose) the front cover being gilt-embossed with the title. 7 Color plates. Boards measure 10.25" wide by 12.625" high, sheets measure 10.25" x 11.75" and images measure 7.35" x 4.57" Titles of the seven prints are as follows: "The Beautiful Gate of The Temple", "Sacrifice at Lystra","Elymas Smitten Blind", "ST. PAUL, PREACHING AT ATHENS", "MIRACULOUS DRAUGHT OF THE FISHES", "DEATH OF ANNANIAS", "CHRIST'S CHARGE TO ST. PETER." All of these are produced by Bradshaw & Blacklock, Licensees, Manchester by Baxter's Patent (this informaqtion, as well as the title of each of the seven plates being delicately embossed in fancy border underneath the center of each image). YCFBA calls the prints " Aquatint, etching, stipple engraving and color woodcut on thick, smooth cream wove paper mounted on contemporary cream card." Others call them "Baxter's Process print made by Bradshaw and Blacklock of England." Bradshaw and Blacklock licensed the Baxter's process from Baxter in 1850's. These studies were produced soon after as far as we can determine. These are very rare items and were colored by aligning a block for each color used and impressing it over the engraving. These seven prints are exquisite in their composition, delicacy and vibrancy. While the cardstock they are printed upon shows signs of yellowing and age-toning at the perimeters, and a few plates have small folds or chipping at the corners and edges, the prints themselves are bright and clean. No text is present, and I believe none was issued with these, except perhaps a title-page or cover sheet. There is no printed text material present with this item, and research does not reveal further information on the printing or bibliographic history of these. The prints may be related to: "The cartoons of Raphael, London, New York, London Print. and Pub. Co., [18--?]," which is described as having 7 prints, each with letterpress guards and a few pages of text, but the measurements of this book do not align with the measurements of this book or contents, and no mention is made of the prints being in color. The closest reference to this portfolio can be found in an 1870 auction catalogue titled "Catalogue of the Library Belonging to Mr. John A. Rice...of Chicago to be sold by Auction...1870 by Bangs, Merwin." wherein there is an item (#2666) titled "The Cartoons of Raphael. A Series of Seven Colored Plates."

Final page of contents has VI and not IV, which is corrected. Hawthorne prefaced The Scarlet Letter with an autobiographical sketch entitled "The Custom House." In 1846 he had been named surveyor of the Salem Custom House, but he lost the lucrative position for political reasons in 1849. The Philips Research Library in Salem, Massachusetts, has an extensive collection of Hawthorne material. This signed Custom House document is similar to documents found at the Philips. Lovely copy.         [Ukiyoe Album of Kabuki Actors].

(circa1850). A beautiful Japanese colour woodblock concertina album of actors. 28 leaves featuring 16 full page woodblocks, 5 diptychs and 2 leaves with 2 images on each. 18.2 x 12.5cm. Some occasional insect damage and joins at fore edges professionally repaired with wheat starch paste. A little insect damage on covers. A very attractive album. Utagawa Hirosada, or Gosotei Hirosada as he was also known, was an exceptional printmaker active in the period 1826 - 1863 in Osaka. He is believed to have died in 1865. In this album are 20 of his own prints, with the others attributed to the other artists. Fans of kabuki eagerly sought his prints which, in some cases, as shown in this album include the names of the actors. On others, due to the restrictions placed on actors by the authorities at the time, the actors remained unnamed. This album features images from the story Hakkenden (The Tale of the Eight Dogs) while others are from Chukoden (Tales of Loyalty and Filial Piety, or Biographies of Respectful Loyal Men).A most desirable album the colours are bright and strong with many striking compositions. Each actor is portrayed in three quarter profile a style which Hirosada was well known for. This album was almost certainly put together by a keen 19th century theatre fan who would have enjoyed the leafing through the images of their favourite stars of the Japanese stage much as any film star fan might do today.
