        Fächer mit farblithographiertem Fächerblatt, Handbemalung und kunstvoll geschnitzten Stäben aus Bein.

      Um 1850. - Länge 26 cm. In halbrundem hölzernen, mit Samt ausgeschlagenen Schmuckschaukasten mit Glasabdeckung. Wunderschöner Fächer mit sommerlichem Motiv. Es zeigt Menschen an einem See, ein Paar, ein Maler, Kinder, auf dem See ein Boot mit Ausflüglern. Die Ränder des Fächerblattes sind von Hand ornamental verziert, meist mit Gold. Die Stäbe sind mehrfach durchbrochen, verziert und mit Gold bemalt. - Fächerblatt in den Faltkanten teils leicht eingerissen; die Goldfarbe auf den Stäben oxidiert. Insgesamt sehr schön erhalten.

The blocks are arranged in subjects, which include coats of arms, animals and birds, wagons and coaches, a wide range of sailing ships, trades, baker's labels, horse racing and other sports, agricultural subjects, railway trains, printing presses, fists, views of the Crystal Palace, other London buildings, scenery at home and abroad, miniature scripture history illustrations, three picture alphabets, tea and tobacco labels, borders, and other ornaments. Signed blocks include examples by Ebenezer Landells, Orrin Smith, T. S. Adeney, and others. "This unique collection was commenced by Messrs. Vizetelly and Branston, and considerably improved and extended by the late Richard Mason Wood, founder of the firm of Wood and Sharwoods, and further added to by the late Thomas Sharwood, from the sale of Messrs. Alexander Wilson & Son's Foundry, and one hundred new sheets just printed by Wood and Company. The cost of the original Engravings have exceeded the sum of Fifteen Thousand Pounds. This is not only the largest and most varied assortment in the world, but for practical utility, unequalled."?Introduction. Richard Austin, a punch-cutter, founded the Imperial Letter Foundry some time before 1819. Later he was followed by his son George Austin (as Austin & Son in 1824) who succeeded to the business. On the death of George, the foundry was acquired by Richard Mason Wood, who subsequently, in 1833, in partnership with Samuel and Thomas Sharwood, moved to 120, Aldersgate Street, under the name of the Austin Letter Foundry. On Wood's death in 1845 the firm became S. and T. Sharwood. According to Bigmore & Wyman "after the death of the last surviving member of the Sharwoods, Thomas, the foundry was thrown into Chancery. It subsequently passed to two sons [James and Richard Mason] of R. M. Wood. They removed it from Aldergate-street to 89, West Smithfield, and thence to Farringdon-road, and here carried on business besides as printers' brokers, manufactures of materials, also publishing the Typographic Advertiser."         Abraham Lincoln Lengthy and Attractive Signed Legal Brief in a Case Heard by Judge David Davis, Later Lincoln’s Campaign Manager and Supreme Court Appointee

      1850 - Autograph Manuscript Signed by Lincoln as "Bush & Lincoln pq," Narratio, March 1850, in the case of Matthews v. Saltonstall, April 1850 term of the Tazewell County Circuit Court. 2 1/2 pp with approx. 670 words in Lincoln's hand, blue paper. On September 20, 1849, William L. Saltonstall began building a road through Josiah Matthews' land, southwest of Tremont, Illinois. Matthews objected and retained Abraham Lincoln and local attorney John M. Bush to file suit against in the Tazewell County Circuit Court, at the newly constructed courthouse in Pekin, on March 9, 1850. Matthews sued in the action of trespass and requested $500 for damage to his land. Saltonstall retained Lincoln's former partner John T. Stuart and local attorney Benjamin F. James. In an affidavit filed on April 6, they declared that Guerdon F. Saltonstall could testify that six years earlier, when he owned the land, he and Matthews agreed that a lane be left along Matthews' property as a right-of-way. Pending his testimony, the judge ordered a continuance. Both parties then agreed to arbitration, and on June 4, 1850, Matthews agreed that a right of way was necessary, and Saltonstall agreed to pay actual damages to be set by the arbitrators. Three arbitrators viewed the land and listened to testimony. On June 12, they rendered their decision that Saltonstall should pay Matthews $16 and also pay $5.90 for the costs of the arbitration. At the September 1850 term of the Tazewell County Circuit Court, Judge David Davis dismissed the case, ordering Matthews to pay $2.40 in court costs. Excerpt: (complete transcript available below):"Josiah Matthews, plaintiff, complains of William L. Saltonstall, defendent, being in custody &c of a plea of Trespass.with force and arms, broke and entered the close of the said plaintiff, situate in the county aforesaid, and then and there forced, broke open, threw down damaged and spoiled, divers fences of the said plaintiff of great value.and with feet in walking, trod down, trampled upon, consumed and spoiled the grass and corn.and with the feet off the said horses, mares, geldings, sheep, cattle and oxen; and with the wheels of the said carts, wagons, and other carriages, tore up, subverted, damaged and spoiled the earth and soil of the said close; and thereby and therewith, during all the time aforesaid, greatly encumbered the close aforesaid, and hindered and prevented the said plaintiff from have the use, benefit, and enjoyment thereof, in so large and ample a manner as he might and otherwise would have done. Bush & Lincoln p.q"Historical BackgroundSome years after this case, Abraham Lincoln prepared notes for a potential law lecture. Among his advice: "Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser, in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough." Perhaps Lincoln followed his own advice to encourage these neighbors to settle their differences through arbitration.Josiah Matthews (1802-1867), born in Vermont, purchased 40 acres of public domain land in Tazewell County in 1835. He was a farmer, and a strong anti-slavery activist and one of the first Underground Railroad operators in Tazewell County, Illinois. In 1855, Lincoln successfully represented Matthews in his divorce from his wife Lucy; the Jury found Josiah Matthews not guilty and found his wife, who filed for divorce, guilty of desertion.William L. Saltonstall (1823-1899) was born in Kentucky to Guerdon F. and Mary Saltonstall, moving to Illinois in 1839. William was involved in some estate litigation after his father's death in 1851, and Lincoln represented the children. In 1857, Lincoln represented Saltonstall in another case in federal court to foreclose a mortgage. In the 1880s, Saltonstall moved to Saline County, Missouri.John M.       Italy, around 1850. - circa 28,5 x 43,5 (inside of mat). 1 leaf in mat (passepartout), framed "Elegant drawing with a view at the villa and church of San Giorgio, to the left unfinished sketch of the sculptures on the steps leading up to the exedra. The villa, built for the Venetian patrician Francesco Duodo around 1590 is attributed to the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi with later additions being designed by Andrea Tirali. - The drawing has an old inscription in pencil in German: "bei Bataglia B. Fiedler". - Battaglia Terme is a town near Monselice, also in the province of Padova. The painter Bernhard Fiedler (1816-1904) is most famous for his travels and paintings in the Near East, especially Palestine and Egypt, but he did spend longer periods of time in Italy as well during the 1840ies and 50ies.       Engelmann père & fils for Jean Zuber, [Mulhouse, Alsace, France 1850 - (19 1/4 x 14 inches). Lithographed throughout: uncoloured title, 73 images by Engelmann after P.A. Mongin, J.J. Déltil, J.M. Gué, Zippélius, Ehrmann, Fuchs and others on 41 sheets (15 sheets with fine contemporary hand-colouring, 4 of these heightened with gum arabic, including two images in both coloured and uncoloured state). (The final sheet cut dwon and loosely inserted, the 4th and 5th torn with marginal paper loss not affecting the images, the 8th sheet torn in half with neat old repair). Contemporary French blue reversed leather-backed blue/green paper-covered boards, upper cover with red morocco label panelled and lettered in gilt, extremities rubbed Provenance: H. Cresch (early inscription "H. Cresch / sellier / Masevaux") A magnificent album: an iconography of the work of the greatest of all the 19th-century producers of 'papier peints', and a spectacular example of the lithographer's art. Despite its large format and exuberant use of high-quality hand-colouring, the present album was designed as no more than a sample book to be used by salesmen or agents of Alsace-based producers of wall and ceiling treatments: Jean Zuber et Cie. The heavy usage such albums usually received has ensured that they are now much rarer than many of their pampered drawing-room contemporaries: the Grand Tour views of Rome or Paris survived into the 20th century in huge numbers, albums such as these did not. After ten years learning his trade, Jean Zuber, the founder of the company, began manufacturing under his own name in 1802. He employing a number of artists: P. A. Mongin can be said to have set the style for the firm, working for Jean Zuber & Cie. up until 1825. The popularity of Mongin's designs can be judged by the fact that a number of them were still being offered for sale in the present album produced about 25 years after he stopped working for the firm. J.J. Deltil succeeded to the mantle of chief designer and the spectacular three sheet panorama "Vues du l'Amerique du Nord" (1834) is one of the better known designs of his that is in the album: - the panorama of New York City, West Point, Boston, Virginia and Niagara Falls is here seen on two uncoloured and one coloured sheet, the 32 sheet full-sized work so delighted Jackie Kennedy that she had it installed in the "grand salon ovale de la Maison-Blanche" (according to Le Monde du Papier Peint , p. 113). Deltil was also responsible for the "Vues du Brésil" (1830) and the "Décor Chinois" (1832). It is however the image of a section of "El Dorado" which enables us to date the album to the middle of the century, since it was not produced until 1848, a date confirmed by the "Conquete de Mexique" which purports to show scenes from the war of 1846-1848. In addition to the examples of papier peint there are numerous plates showing designs for decorative papers for a variety of other schemes, including faux panelling (in a variety of styles), ceilings, ceiling roses, chimney breasts, etc. Some of these are designed to reproduce plaster, some woodwork, and some again fabric, but all are of the highest quality with particular attention paid to the fine detail: as is to be expected from an album printed by Engelmann and intended to sell wall-paper that is on a much larger scale. Opera completa I moti del 1848, detti anche rivoluzione del '48 o Primavera dei popoli furono un'ondata di moti rivoluzionari borghesi che sconvolsero l'Europa nel 1848 e nel 1849. Scopo dei moti fu abbattere i governi della Restaurazione per sostituirli con governi liberali. Il loro impatto storico fu così profondo e violento che nel linguaggio corrente è entrata in uso l'espressione «fare un quarantotto» per sottintendere una improvvisa confusione e scompiglio. La prima agitazione europea del 1848 si verificò in Italia: la rivoluzione siciliana che esplose il 12 gennaio di quell'anno, che rappresentò la prima miccia dell'esplosione europea. L'insurrezione siciliana, infatti, spinse in un primo momento i Borbone a concedere il ritorno nell'Isola alla costituzione del 1812. Seguì una rivoluzione a Napoli, il 27, che costrinse, due giorni dopo, Ferdinando II a promettere una Costituzione, promulgata l'11 febbraio. Lo stesso 11 febbraio Leopoldo II di Toscana, cugino primo dell'imperatore Ferdinando I d'Austria, concesse la Costituzione, nella generale approvazione dei suoi sudditi. L'esempio borbonico fu seguito da Carlo Alberto di Savoia con lo Statuto Albertino e da Papa Pio IX con lo Statuto Fondamentale. Solo il re piemontese mantenne però lo Statuto. In Sicilia il parlamento proclamò in marzo l'indipendenza, che sarebbe durata fino al maggio 1849. Nel napoletano la concessione e la successiva repressione delle libertà costituzionali, portò dal maggio al settembre di quell'anno a una serie di moti. In tutto il Regno Lombardo-Veneto scoppiarono rivolte, come le Cinque giornate di Milano che sfociarono nella prima guerra di indipendenza. Nello Stato Pontificio una rivolta interna estromise papa Pio IX dai suoi poteri temporali e portò alla costituzione della Repubblica Romana. La rivoluzione delle Cinque giornate di Milano e altre proteste indussero il Re Carlo Alberto a dichiarare guerra all'Austria. Le truppe vennero presto sconfitte e solo quelle francesi poterono far retrocedere gli austriaci. La successiva ascesa al trono di Vittorio Emanuele II fece del Piemonte il motore propulsore del processo di unificazione italiana che tuttavia si sarebbe ottenuto solo nel 1861. Per quanto i Moti del '48 furono sedati abbastanza velocemente, le vittime furono decine di migliaia: il destino della democrazia europea ci è sfuggito di mano dichiarerà Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Gli storici concordano che la Primavera dei popoli fu, alla fin fine, soprattutto un sanguinoso fallimento, se si eccettua la concessione dello Statuto Albertino nel Regno di Sardegna da parte di Carlo Alberto di Savoia, l'unica costituzione non revocata di quelle concesse o votate nel 1848-49. Vi furono tuttavia radicali e notevoli effetti a lungo termine: Germania e Italia sarebbero presto arrivate all'unificazione facendo leva anche sulla necessità di autodeterminazione dei popoli. Analogamente l'Ungheria sarebbe giunta ad un parziale riconoscimento della propria autonomia (a discapito della popolazione slava) grazie all'Ausgleich del 1867. In Prussia e Austria fu abolito il feudalesimo, mentre in Russia fu eliminata la servitù della gleba nel 1861. L'Opera vanta 306 tavole allegorico - caricaturali sullo stato dell'Italia del tempo, incisione su rame ricca di significato e rappresentazione mediante satirica dissacrante della condizione della nostra penisola oppressa. Le tavole furono in parte riprese dal giornale romano Don Pirlone, quotidiano, uscito dal 1settembre 1848 al 2 luglio 1849 (con una interruzione dl 29 aprile al 7 maggio 1849), ma in parte furono realizzate appositamente per questa opera. Tra gli incisori sono presenti anche i nomi di Ratti, Vaiani, Monneret, Gallucci, Pichi, Masutti. Il titolo Don Pirlone deriva quasi sicuramente da una maschera creata dallo scrittore satirico Girolamo Gigli (1660 - 1722). Si trattava di una specie di Tartufo molieresco, ispirato ad una figura reale, il canonico Feliciati di Sarteano. Nei tre volumi l'avvocato Michelangiolo Pinto raccolse tutto il pubblicato del giornale, che fu il più temuto e allo stesso tempo il più apprezzato tra i molteplici giornali satirici che si pubblicavano nella Roma di Pio IX all'epoca delle grandi riforme volute dal Papa. I romani gli dedicarono perfino una canzone (Davanti un numero di gran persone - che mi salutano Viva Pirlone!). Anche gli avversari politici ne riconobbero l'efficacia e la bellezza delle tavole. Il 22 marzo 1849 apparve con il cappello frigio per incitare alla resistenza contro i francesi. Il Pinto, nato a Roma nel 1818, spentosi nel 1910, già comproprietario ed articolista del celebre periodico satirico "DonPirlone", riparò a Torino dopo la caduta della Repubblica Romana; scrivendo la presente opera egli vi trasfuse lo stesso mordace spirito polemico che aveva animato il quasi omonimo periodico: "Edotti dall'esperienza, sappiamo quale profonda traccia lascino nell'animo umano gli incancellabili colpi del ridicolo". Salvatore de Marco was one of the three most prominent publishers of the early neapolitan canzonas, he is also credited as composer of one of the songs. Contains 20 songs by the composer Pietro Labriola (1820-1900), three by Francesco Ruggi, two by Battista, three by Eduardo de Quartery, and with songs by several others. This charming collection includes versions of "Lo guarracino", "Te voglio bene assaje" and a very early imprint of the famous "Santa Lucia" ("Vera barcarola populare il barcajuola di Santa Lucia") and many more. Commande d'une planche de cuivre. Envoi d'un dessin : «J'aurais bien désiré, monsieur, connaître l'opinion de madame la Princesse et des personnes de son intimité sur mon portrait [.]. Je porte mon dessin à 600 f., prix qui était dans mes habitudes à l'époque où madame la comtesse d'Aragon m'a fait l'honneur de m'appeler la première fois [.]». Une dernière lettre est relative aux démarches engagées pour toucher l'argent de sa médaille d'honneur, qu'il destine à diverses associations d'artistes. Votre réussite me fait plaisir pour vous et pour votre famille, et je demande à Dieu qu'il bénisse toujours votre oeuvre. On m'a parlé d'un autre projet que vous méditiez. Je ne vous conseille pas de l'entreprendre. Il est trop difficile et d'une utilité que je lui conteste. Erste Ausgabe. - "His 'Lehrbuch der Geognosie' was the most authoritative work on petrography in the mid-nineteenth century and served as a standard textbook for decades. In it he differentiated rocks primarily according to their origin, which he determined from their texture, for example, crystalline, clastic, and hyaline. He supported the theory that most gneisses and schists had been formed from sedimentary rocks but admitted that some gneisses had been produced by the deformation of igneous rocks. The first text to devote considerable space to tectonics, his 'Lehrbuch' contained all of the scientific information known about earthquakes at that time. Naumann held that certain earthquakes occurred independently of any volcanic activity and might therefore be termed "plutonic". This view was in opposition to that of Humboldt, who believed earthquakes and volcanoes to be merely different manifestations of the same causes" (DSB). - Naumann (1797-1873), Schüler von A. G.
