      [Italy: circa 1850]. Gouache on paper (sheet size: 9 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches; and 10 1/4 x 15 3/8 inches), the larger painting of Bellagio signed in pencil at the lower left 'Luigi Bartezzati f.'. A fine pair of late 'Grand Tour' images of two of the jewels of Northern Italy Lake Maggiore "has a surface area of about 213 km², a maximum length of 54 km and, at its widest, is 12 km. ... The lakes jagged banks are surrounded by the Prealps of Piedmont and Lombardy. The western bank is in Piedmont (provinces of Novara and Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and the eastern in Lombardy (province of Varese), whereas the most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres into Switzerland, where it constitutes the lowest point above sea-level in that entire country. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa ... Isola Bella is one of the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in north Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 meters from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 meters long by 400 meters wide and is entirely occupied by the Palazzo Borromeo and its Italianate garden [completed in 1671]." (wikipedia). Bellagio is located at the point at which the Lakes Como and Lecco divide. From Lake Como, one sees the beautiful Romanesque Bell Tower handsomely portrayed here by Bartezzati.

Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in printed wrappers, large woodcut image of Walters to front, untrimmed edges. Light soiling, some edgewear. Toning to text, occasional minor stains and light foxing. * Although OCLC records an "Ann Walters (1812-1844)," McDade believes her story is a work of fiction that incorporates details of a dozen different murders. He also doubts the veracity of the Runkle case. Walters ran a tavern on the Delaware-Maryland border, where she liked to murder traveling slave traders and steal their slaves, money and other valuables. (Her murder of a slave-trader is depicted in one of the woodcuts.) Her depravity is blamed in part on the morally corrosive effects of slavery: "Although born in a free country where slavery is abhorred [Canada], she soon imbibed a taste for the traffic in slaves, as our readers may easily perceive that her location was in a slave state where morality is not very exalted, as such a course could not have been carried on in a free state so long, without meeting the eye of detection."         Tourists in Wales

      London: Rock & Co Tourists in Wales: & pencilings in the Principalities by a Pedestrian Artist. In its original brown paper wraps, Now encased in a fine buckram slip cloth with the title and author in gold to spine and front cover. Internally the spine has been strengthened by tape, and there is some minor browning, but a spectacular and very rare production. There are twelve pages of colour images depicting humorous aspects of tourism. Page 1 is Tourists where there are 11 small images, followed by High Ways of Wales 5 images, The By-Ways with 5 images, The Beauties of Wales 7 images, Rivers of Wales 5 images, The Waterfalls with 2 images, The Mountains of Wales 5 images, Market day in Wales 9 images, Welsh Fairs and Hirings 8 images, Counties in Wales 13 images of Welsh Ladies in the Welsh dress of that county... etc. No edition stated but presume first, no date but circa 1850. All images are bright in colour with title or description below in black ink, superb! Onwhyn, in the 1830s and 1840s Joseph Onwhyn published a number of guides for tourists - to the Highlands, Killarney, Wales, and the Lakes- chiefly compiled from his own notes and observations.He also published in 1864, The Owl (a society newspaper), though its success afterwards affected his mind. Thomas Onwhyn had came to public notice by his contribution of a series of -illegitimate- illustrations to works by Charles Dickens.       Oregon or Washington. [based on sketches made ca. 1850-1855, but painted somewhat later].. Pastel on card, 19 1/2 x 39 inches. Signed lower left: "Gibbs." Framed and glazed in a period hardwood frame and gold gilt liner. The painting, with excellent, bright colors, is in excellent displayable condition. This beautiful painting of three Indians laying up two canoes on the bank of a river in wooded mountainous terrain is the work of George Gibbs (1815-73), ethnographer, mapmaker, geologist, historian, attorney, and, for nearly twelve years, an explorer, artist, and administrator in the Pacific Northwest. The scene is likely the western entrance to the Columbia River Gorge, with the Cascade Mountain Range in the near distance. The painting shares several geographic and artistic touchpoints with the annotated on- the-spot drawing from 1850 that Gibbs made farther east on the river at Oak Point, illustrated in David Bushnell's DRAWINGS BY GEORGE GIBBS IN THE FAR NORTHWEST, 1849-1851. The painting is signed in a slightly stylized version of the signature found throughout Gibbs' personal and professional papers. Gibbs learned to paint while attending the Round Hill School in Northampton, Massachusetts, the first experimental prep school in the country, founded by future historian George Bancroft, and Joseph Green Cogswell, later director of the first great public library in the United States, the Astor Library. Gibbs grew up surrounded by great American art. "Gibbs' father commissioned Gilbert Stuart to paint Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe; these portraits hung in Gibbs' childhood home at Sunswick Farms, Astoria, New York. Stuart also painted portraits of 'Colonel' George Gibbs and Laura Wolcott Gibbs, his parents" - Stephen Dow Beckham. Papers from Gibbs' adolescence indicate the development of his interest in science and in outdoor life; and one very interesting letter, a harbinger of a career to come, written in 1833 from Boston to his sister, Eliza, includes an account of seventeen-year-old Gibbs' encounter with John James Audubon (Wisconsin Historical Society): "Dear Sister, I have just returned from a visit to Mr. Audubon. THE Audubon. But I will tell you all in order. Saturday I went to see the prints of his birds at the Athenaeum. They are superb, of full size on elephant paper. Turkeys & eagles as well as small birds and large as life & the colouring & execution beautiful. They are all of them represented in the act of seizing their prey or in some natural and striking position. The landscapes birds butterflies animals etc are very fine. His son paints the flowers & branches of trees on which many rest, from nature, they are very beautiful. He has not near finished his collection, though about two hundred are done... "I killed [a moth] this morning with nitric acid, and by way of introduction agreed to take him to Mr. Audubon's & Aunt Ruth who had been before went to. Mr. A was unwell & we took the pleasure of seeing him. He is a complete original & a remarkable man. [Audubon was] extremely glad of the moth & Mr. A [illegible] that I would accept of a little shell he had picked up on the coast of Florida as a remembrance. [Audubon] has a large collection of stuffed birds as a reference for description. He showed me some of the original paintings. The feathers look like real ones every division accurately transferred...." Gibbs earned a Harvard law degree, then began a desultory, unenthusiastic, unprofitable law practice. "[In 1843, Gibbs became librarian of the New-York Historical Society], cataloging the collection and steering it toward an emphasis on American subjects. [Gibbs started another law firm], but his work for the historical society [which he genuinely enjoyed and committed himself to] absorbed more and more of his time. "The excitement over the discovery of gold in California finally dislodged Gibbs completely from his law practice, and in 1849 he left New York for St. Louis, Missouri. Joining a march of the Mounted Riflemen, he traveled overland from Fort Leavenworth to Oregon City. On the trip he made many drawings and kept a journal, portions of which were published in the New York papers. His lively entries described the climate and landscape, life in camp, and encounters with Sioux Indians and emigrants on the Oregon Trail. "Gibbs settled in Astoria, Oregon, near the mouth of the Columbia River. In 1850 he was appointed deputy collector of the port, but he resigned later that year in the aftermath of having embarrassed his superior by an overzealous prosecution of the customs laws. In 1851 he joined Reddick McKee on an expedition to draw up land treaties with Indian tribes west of the Sacramento Valley. In five months McKee's group met with nearly 10,000 Indians and concluded five treaties. Gibbs, who had already been interested in Indian languages, compiled vocabulary lists of fifteen indigenous tongues and worked on maps of the region. In 1852 he tried his hand at prospecting in northern California with less than impressive results. By the end of the year he was back in Astoria, again as a customs collector, but when Franklin Pierce took office in 1853, Gibbs lost his political appointment. "Gibbs soon found other work. In 1853 George B. McClellan hired him as a geologist and ethnologist to help survey a railroad route to the Pacific. In 1854 Gibbs left Oregon for good, settling near Fort Steilacoom in the Washington Territory on a farm he called 'Chetlah.' He was rarely there, however, continuing his surveying and conducting ethnological research. Working for the Indian Commission in the territory, Gibbs helped shape Indian policy. He argued for keeping Native Americans on their traditional homelands to preserve the cultural and linguistic diversity that he knew was dissolving quickly on reservations. He also campaigned for the use of Indian place names, which he often noted on the maps he made. Gibbs served briefly as the acting governor of Washington Territory and was appointed brigadier general of the militia in 1855. "In 1857 and 1858 Gibbs was again in the field, this time surveying the 49th parallel between the United States and Canada for the Northwest Boundary Survey. Working for Archibald Campbell, he traversed the border from the Pacific to the Rockies. Gibbs took every opportunity to add to his knowledge of Indian languages, and also collected animal, insect, and plant specimens, many of which he sent to scientists like Louis Agassiz and Asa Gray" - Bethany Neubauer, AMERICAN NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY. Raymond Settle's introduction to THE MARCH OF THE MOUNTED RIFLEMAN, which draws from the journals made by Gibbs and that expedition's leader, Major Osborne Cross, endorses the importance of Gibbs western sketches: "As an artist Gibbs exhibited considerable talent, both in sketching outdoor scenes and in drawing from life. He made what was perhaps the first drawing of Shoshone Falls, and sketched various scenes in eastern Oregon, on the Columbia River, and while crossing the Cascade Mountains...[In 1851, while associated with Oregon Territory Governor John P. Gaines in the making of treaties with the Calapooya Indians, and later that same year with Reddick McKee], Gibbs made many drawings...numerous drawings." Bushnell notes that Gibbs' sketches of the Pacific Northwest impressed Seth Eastman, who incorporated them into his own work. Eastman's sepia drawing, "Humboldt, California, 1851," later made into an engraving for Schoolcraft, is annotated: "S. Eastman from a sketch by G. Gibbs" (SETH EASTMAN - A PORTFOLIO OF NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS, pl. 47). George Gibbs authored, usually under the imprimatur of the Smithsonian Institution, several important books on Indian languages and dialects, and tribal life, in the Pacific Northwest. His scholarship in such works as NOTES ON THE TINNEH OR CHEPEWYAN INDIANS OF BRITISH AND RUSSIAN AMERICA (1867) and ALPHABETICAL VOCABULARIES OF THE CLALLAM AND THE LUMMI (1863) was so meticulously researched and well-illustrated that historian William Goetzmann calls Gibbs "one of the founders of scientific studies in the Far West." Gibbs' notes and interpretations of 19th-century treaties between Indian tribes and federal and state governments (the drafts for those treaties are often in his handwriting) are used to this day to argue lawsuits involving American Indian interests, many concerning the building of casinos on reservation lands Gibbs wrote books concerning American law. His propagandist history of the Federalist Party, MEMOIRS OF THE ADMINISTRATIONS OF WASHINGTON AND JOHN ADAMS (1846) began as a biographical study of his great-grandfather, Declaration of Independence signer Oliver Wolcott, the senior, and his grandfather, Oliver Wolcott, United States Treasury Secretary and Connecticut governor. Terrible health, rheumatic gout, kept Gibbs out of the U.S. Army during the Civil War, though he did volunteer. "He became an important member of the Loyal National League and the Loyal Union Club. During the latter part of his life he lived in Washington, D.C. ['in the Smithsonian tower!' (Beckham)], where his extensive knowledge of the northwestern Indians [and his collection of their artifacts] was often employed by the Smithsonian Institution" - DAB. Artwork by George Gibbs is rarely found in the marketplace. Artnet and AskArt do not report any works having come into the market. He donated the majority of his western sketches to the Smithsonian Institution. The Peabody Museum at Harvard University owns a small holding of his sketches, as does the National Park Service collection at Fort Vancouver. Aside from the present example, we are not familiar with any other large scale painting by Gibbs - nor is the leading authority on Gibbs, Lewis and Clark College professor Stephen Dow Beckham, who has written about Gibbs since his 1970 dissertation, "George Gibbs, 1815-1873: Historian and Ethnologist" - making this newly discovered, quite gorgeous, picture a significant addition to the art canon of the American Northwest.         Collection d'Esquisses des principaux articles de décoration exécutés en papier peint dans la manufacture de Jean Zuber et Compagnie à Rixheim près Mulhausen, dept. du haut-Rhin

      [Mulhouse, Alsace, France: Engelmann père & fils for Jean Zuber, circa 1850]. Folio. (19 1/4 x 14 inches). Lithographed throughout: uncoloured title, 73 images by Engelmann after P.A. Mongin, J.J. Déltil, J.M. Gué, Zippélius, Ehrmann, Fuchs and others on 41 sheets (15 sheets with fine contemporary hand-colouring, 4 of these heightened with gum arabic, including two images in both coloured and uncoloured state). (The final sheet cut dwon and loosely inserted, the 4th and 5th torn with marginal paper loss not affecting the images, the 8th sheet torn in half with neat old repair). Contemporary French blue reversed leather-backed blue/green paper-covered boards, upper cover with red morocco label panelled and lettered in gilt, extremities rubbed. A magnificent album: an iconography of the work of the greatest of all the 19th-century producers of 'papier peints', and a spectacular example of the lithographer's art. Despite its large format and exuberant use of high-quality hand-colouring, the present album was designed as no more than a sample book to be used by salesmen or agents of Alsace-based producers of wall and ceiling treatments: Jean Zuber et Cie. The heavy usage such albums usually received has ensured that they are now much rarer than many of their pampered drawing-room contemporaries: the Grand Tour views of Rome or Paris survived into the 20th century in huge numbers, albums such as these did not. After ten years learning his trade, Jean Zuber, the founder of the company, began manufacturing under his own name in 1802. He employing a number of artists: P. A. Mongin can be said to have set the style for the firm, working for Jean Zuber & Cie. up until 1825. The popularity of Mongin's designs can be judged by the fact that a number of them were still being offered for sale in the present album produced about 25 years after he stopped working for the firm. J.J. Deltil succeeded to the mantle of chief designer and the spectacular three sheet panorama "Vues du l'Amerique du Nord" (1834) is one of the better known designs of his that is in the album: - the panorama of New York City, West Point, Boston, Virginia and Niagara Falls is here seen on two uncoloured and one coloured sheet, the 32 sheet full-sized work so delighted Jackie Kennedy that she had it installed in the "grand salon ovale de la Maison-Blanche" (according to Le Monde du Papier Peint, p. 113). Deltil was also responsible for the "Vues du Brésil" (1830) and the "Décor Chinois" (1832). It is however the image of a section of "El Dorado" which enables us to date the album to the middle of the century, since it was not produced until 1848, a date confirmed by the "Conquete de Mexique" which purports to show scenes from the war of 1846-1848. In addition to the examples of papier peint there are numerous plates showing designs for decorative papers for a variety of other schemes, including faux panelling (in a variety of styles), ceilings, ceiling roses, chimney breasts, etc. Some of these are designed to reproduce plaster, some woodwork, and some again fabric, but all are of the highest quality with particular attention paid to the fine detail: as is to be expected from an album printed by Engelmann and intended to sell wall-paper that is on a much larger scale.       New York: Published by the Surveyor William Perris 93 William Street [copyright registered in 1850 by Perris & Hutchinson], 1850-51. Wall map on two sheets joined, lithographed by Mayer & Korffs, contemporary hand- colouring. Large inset view of the city from Governor's Island, 8 lists of references, ornamental border. (Backed onto archival linen and edged with burgundy silk). 36 x 49 inches. A very rare mid-19th century large-scale map of New York published to be hung in the city's fire stations. The map extends from the tip of Manhattan as far north as 42nd Street. The general key lists 24 different symbols used to identify churches, schools, hotels, places of amusement, public buildings, newspaper offices, parks, cemeteries, etc. The New York and Harlem Railroad runs down Fourth Avenue while the Hudson River Railroad approaches via Tenth Avenue and West Street. Numerous individual sites are marked and indexed under various lists of references: "Places of Amusement" (American Museum, Broadway Theatre, Chinese Museum, etc.); "Public Buildings etc." (City Hall, Hall of Records, Croton Aqueduct department, Prison, etc.); "Colleges, Universities and Literary, Scientific and Benevolent Institutions" (Columbia College, American Art Union, Home for the Friendless, etc); "Banks" (American Exchange, Bank of New York, Bank of America, etc.); "Markets" (Washington, Fulton, etc.); "Hotels (Delmonicos', Tammany Hall, Carlton House, etc); "Churches" (Reformed Dutch, Friends, Jews, Unitarian, etc.) and "Public Grounds" (The Battery, Union Square, Madison Square, etc). Of particular interest is a hachured line marking in the river adjacent to the Battery depicting the boundary of the 'Proposed Enlargement' - i.e. present-day Battery Park. However, the most important element of this map is its association with fire fighting in New York. The locations of each of the city's engine, hose and hook-and- ladder houses is shown and the city is clearly divided into eight numbered fire districts via a bold red line. By the end of the first half of the 19th century, as the city of New York entered a time of industrial development and rapid population growth, the frequency of devastating fires had escalated. "The rivalry which had always existed between the crews of the various engines had, year by year, grown more intense, and when the fire alarm brought them out, it was almost certain that there would be a collision, ending in blows, and often in a free fight" (Stokes, III:p. 559). The many volunteer companies in the city all responded to the same alarm, regardless of the location of the fire. Concurrently, the more frequent use of horse-drawn steam engines (as opposed to hand pumps pulled by a team of men) racing through the city yielded numerous accidents, with several fatalities. These two factors prompted the Common Council in 1850 to propose dividing the city into eight fire districts, with specific alarm bells indicating the district location of the fire, and with only the fire companies in those and the neighboring districts allowed to respond. This ordinance was passed and approved by the Mayor on 25 November 1850, with the ordinance to take effect on the 1st of January 1851. That very same year engineer and surveyor William Perris began working on a comprehensive series of fire insurance maps of New York. "George T. Hope is generally credited with having fostered the idea of specialized and detailed fire insurance maps in the United States. Around 1850 Hope, who was at the time secretary of the Jefferson Insurance Company, began to compile a large-scale map of a portion of New York City for use in calculating fire risks. He engaged William Perris, an engineer trained in England, to make the surveys. To ensure that the proposed map would include all essential information, Hope formed a committee of fire insurance officials to direct the project" (Ristow). Perris's series of maps would be published between 1852 and 1855 in seven volumes, and have the distinction of being the first fire insurance maps of the city. The present wall map, however, precedes the publication of those maps. While the exact publication history of this map is unknown, it seems likely given Hope and Perris's association with the city's fire officials, that when the ordinance to divide the city into fire districts was passed, this map of the city which clearly depicts those divisions was proposed. The only contemporary reference to this map is in the minutes of the Common Council for 10 December 1850, wherein it is ordered that 150 copies of Perris's map be purchased and that a copy "be furnished to each engine, hose, and hook-and-ladder company" (quoted in Stokes). It is unlikely that many more copies of this wall map were published, and given the seal of the city in the cartouche, the dedication to the Mayor and Common Council, and the date of 1850-51 (spanning the time between the passage of the ordinance and its taking effect), that this map was effectively underwritten by the Common Council for use in the city's fire stations. This map is a significant rarity. It is unrecorded in any of the usual references on the mapping of New York and OCLC locates only a single example in the New York Public Library.

White moire silk endpapers. No date, but ca. 1850, this book is one in a series brought out by the publisher. This one shows animals in zoo-like settings in a "Jardin des Plantes", or botanic garden. The lithographs are all hand-colored in greens and browns on pale cream-colored sheets, and show exotic animals like camels, elephants, zebras, primates, antelopes, ostriches, etc. Oblong folio, 9 1/2" high X 12 1/2" wide, 43 pages, 20 hand-colored lithographs, also 140 woodcuts in the text. . Johan Ludvig Heiberg (1791-1860) was the main cultural figure of the 19th century in Denmark. He hugely influenced all of Danish culture within this period, and he must be considered the patron of Copenhagen's literati. He was very influential as a thinker in general, and he changed Danish philosophy seminally by introducing Hegel to the Northern country. As thus there is no doubt as to the rôle that Heiberg directly or indirectly played in the life of Kierkegaard, and this is a presentation-copy that links together two of the giants of Danish culture. Kierkegaard viewed himself as somewhat of an outsider, and it was of great importance to him to try and enter the famous literary and cultural circle of Heiberg. This work points to the essence of Kierkegaard's religious-philosophical writings, and he here describes the personal suffering that comes with being a Christian. Christ is considered the rôlemodel, and true Christendom consists in following him. Thus, the Christian will also suffer for his faith, though no man shall become a martyr for the truth. Kierkegaard thus also distinguishes sharply between the established, triumphant church and the true, struggling one, which comes to constitute the essence of his attack on the Danish Church.Søren Kierkegaard, the father of existentialism, became of seminal importance to not only Danish thought, but worldwide, as one of the most important thinkers of his time. He seminally influenced the fields of philosophy, theology, psychology and literature, and not only did he found what is known as existentialism and attempt to renew Christian faith with Christendom, with his influential and controversial critiques of Hegel and the German romantics, he also changed the course of philosophy of the second half of the 19th century.       First edition of Clebsch's doctoral thesis written under the supervision of Franz Neumann. "In 1850 Clebsch entered the University of Königsberg, where the school of mathematics founded by Jacobi was then flourishing. His teachers included the mathematical physicist Franz Neumann and the mathematicians Friedrich Richelot and Ludwig Otto Hesse, both pupils of Jacobi. After graduation, in 1854, he went to Berlin, where he was taught under the direction of Karl Schellbach at various schools. ... From 1868 until his death, he was professor at the University of Göttingen and in the forefront of contemporary German mathematics. In 1868 he and his friend Carl Neumann, son of Franz Neumann, founded the Mathematische Annalen. Clebsch's doctoral dissertation at the University of Königsberg concerned a problem of hydrodynamics, and the main problems considered in the first period of his scientific career were in mathematical physics, especially hydrodynamics and the theory of elasticity."       Paris: Lemercier, [circa 1850]. Large folio. (22 1/8 x 16 3/8 inches). Lithographed and mounted on cloth guards throughout: tinted title with integral vignette by and after Alexandre Bida, 24 tinted plates titled in French, Arabic and English (comprising: 12 views after E. Barbot drawn on stone by Eug. Ciceri with occasional help from C. Bour; 12 costume/character studies by and after Alexandre Bida), all printed by Lemercier. Contemporary brown half morocco over blue cord-grained cloth, upper cover titled in gilt "Souvenirs / d'Egypte", spine in seven compartments with semi-raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with simple repeat decoration in gilt, cream/orange glazed endpapers. A spectacular and rare album featuring the work of two important French Orientalist artists. Only a single copy of this work is listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years, and according to Chadenat this album was never sold commercially. The twenty four uniformly excellent plates include twelve topographical views after Barbot of Egyptian sights and cities from Philae to Cairo, ancient and modern, all peopled and bustling with life. Alexandre Bida's contribution consists of twelve beautifully-observed character studies of the people he encountered in the region: an Albanian, a Copt, dancers, ladies, a donkey driver, a groom, etc. Bida, studied under Eugene Delacroix, and travelled extensively through Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Palestine. "E. Barbot" is Prosper Barbot (1798-1878), a pupil of Jules Coignet and Louis Watelet, who made two journeys to Egypt in 1844 and 1846 travelling from Cairo south across the desert. Le tavole raffigurano coppie di maschere impersonate da fanciulli nel loro costume teatrale. Dedikationen er til professor Carl Emil Scharling (1803-77), teolog, som var bror til Ørsteds datters (Karen) mand. First edition of Oersted's main work in natural philosophy. Presentation-copy with the inscription "Herr Professor og Dr i Theologien/ Scharling/ venskabeligst/ fra/ Forfatteren." (Mr. Professor and Doctor of Theology/ Scharling/ with the kindest regards/ The Author"). Underneath the presentation-inscription a handwritten quotation from a letter from Sophie Oersted (born Oehlenschläger) (from Adam Oehlenschläger's Memoires) in cont. hand (probably that of Scharling). The presentation-inscription is for professor Carl Emil Scharling (1803-77), theologist, who was the brother of Oersted's daughter's (Karen) husband.Oersted is universally known for his discovery of Electro-Magnetism in 1820. Afterwards he went on to write a number of important philosophical works on natural philosophy and empiricism, of which "Aanden i Naturen" he himself considered his main work. The work is found printed on 2 sorts of paper, common- and vellum-paper. This copy is on vellum-paper. Both H.C. Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard admit to having been influenced by the writings of Oersted. "He was an enthusiastic follower of the "Naturphilosophie" school in Germany, whose main object was the unification of physical forces, thus producing a monistic theory of the universe. It was to further this purpose that Oersted sought in actual phenomena the electro-magnetic identity of which he had already convinced himself on metaphysical grounds" (Percy H. Jacob Grimm (1785-1863), one of the famous brothers and collector of fairy tales, was probably the first to introduce the idea of cremation in the modern western world. He was inspired by the ancients as well as costumes in the far east. The idea was frowned upon at first, but is today an acceptable practice

Title in gilt at the front board and at the spine. Name inscription at the title leaf. Rebacked. Most of the old spine laid down. A few stains and scratches to the boards. A few stains to the title and the contents leaf. A short tear to the top of the title leaf. A repaired tear to the upper margin of the contents leaf. As usual there are some browning and offsetting to many of the text pages. The plates are bright and clean.. A classic swedish work on topography covering Sweden from north to south, it´s towns and countryside. The largest and most beautiful plate book of it´s time.The famous danish artist F. C. Kierschou was commisioned by the publisher Felix Bonnier to travel around the southern part of the country and paint picturesque and interesting views. He did so and delivered at least 42 oil paintings. These became the originals to 42 lithographs in the book. The artist Hallbeck was commissioned to draw 40 originals from the northern provinces of Sweden. He never delivered all. Bonnier bitterly and openly complained about Hallbeck. Hallbeck retaliated through the newspapers. The remaining originals were executed by various artists

A poor to fair copy only of this popular title, Dicken's own favourite among his novels..

Contemporary green half calf, some light rubbing, attractive gilt spine with a light vertical crease. All but one point ("screamed" for "screwed") correct for a first issue. Smith I 9.
