        Specimens of Ornamental Art Selected from the Best Models of the Classical Epochs Plate #32. Column from a Wall Painting At Pompei- (size of the original)

      London: Thomas M'Lean, 1850. First printing A Near Fine Original Chromolithograph. Folio. 25.5 x 20 inches, 647.7 x 508 mm. Elegantly French-matted in Black rag and framed in black molding. (26.75 x 33.25 inches). This fine and rare plate was printed in multiple colors, requiring up 20 separate stones, and finished by hand. The work was most likely executed by Wickelmann & Sons of Berlin, for which they received the Metal Prize at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Considered the very height of Victorian color printing, the work was designed by Lewis (Ludwig) Gruner, (1801-1882). Born in Dresden, Gruner became Prince Albert's trusted adviser on art and design, particularly concerning details on the noted Crystal Palace, and potential acquisitions for the newly formed the South Kensington Museum, which was to become the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1852. In addition, Gruner was mentor to Owen Jones, whose massive book production, which included his popular treatise entitled The Grammar of Ornament, influenced the very nature of color plate printing and Victorian book design. In his invaluable bibliography entitled Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing, (University of California Press, 1972), Ruari McLean states, In Lewis Gruner's Specimens of Ornamental Art, many of the polychromatic plates are the finest yet seen in Britain, the craftsmanship to produce which must have rivaled that of the original artists, who include Giotto and Michelangelo, (and Raphael). Dedicated to Prince Albert, the expressed purpose of the work was to provide examples of design and ornament for industry, and is clearly one of the most impressive achievements of mid-Victorian color printing.         Details of the Paintings in Sta. Anastasia at Verona (Plate II)

      [London: Thomas McLean, 1850]. Color printed lithograph with hand- finishing. 19 x 24 1/2 inches. A superb and colorful plate from the seminal "Specimens of Ornamental Art" Ludwig Gruner designed this study of motifs of ancient and Renaissance classicism while he resided in England. There he had participated in the design of the Crystal Palace and advised Prince Albert and Queen Victoria on acquisitions for what would become the Victoria and Albert Museum. Indeed, this sumptuous work on Roman and Italian design was dedicated to Prince Albert. His bold renditions of largely forgotten Classical pictorial ideas excited a revival in interest in earlier ages and cultures and spawned Owen Jones' work on ornamental motifs generally. But Gruner's grand, striking visual quotes from Italian palaces, churches and ancient buildings resonated with the Imperial mindset of England, France and Germany and established Classicism, once again, as the appropriate mode of architecture and design for rulers.

Magirus (1824 - 1895), Kommandant der Ulmer freiwilligen Feuerwehr, bemühte sich um fortschrittliches Feuerwehrgerät, insbesondere Feuerwehrleitern, die technisch gut und billig sein sollten, damit auch kleine Feuerwehren sie anschaffen konnten. Seine wichtigsten Erfindungen und Neuentwicklungen waren 1847 eine verbesserte Hakenleiter, 1864 der selbsttätige Fallhaken und 1872 die sogenannte "Ulmer Leiter" (NDB). Bookplate on front pastedown. Titlepage lightly foxed, minor scattered foxing. Near fine. The author was the surveyor for the Mexican boundary survey after the Mexican War. This work describes his surveys from San Diego to the confluence of the Gila and Colorado rivers, and much of the text consists of daily entries made between July 1849 and January 1850. The folding maps illustrate the port of San Diego and the area of California and Arizona around the junction of the two rivers. "Salazar gives the earliest detailed account of the previously unsurveyed border regions of California and Central Arizona" - Hill.       [United States. ca. 1850?].. Four individual sheets, three matted and one mounted on card. Some scattered foxing, affecting two of the watercolors. Generally very good. Isaac Sprague was one of the most prolific and well-known illustrators of flora and fauna in 19th-century America. STAFLEU & COWAN lists seven composite works, ranging from 1848 to 1891, that included Sprague's illustrations, in addition to his WILD FLOWERS OF AMERICA and FLOWERS OF THE FIELD AND FOREST, both published in 1882. He is particularly remembered for accompanying John James Audubon on his expedition up the Missouri River in 1843, aiding the master painter with ornithological sketches and drawings; the two first met on August 19, 1840, when Audubon admired the young artist's bird drawings. Audubon recorded the meeting in a journal entry: "Saw some very remarkable drawings of birds (far better than any ever made by the immortal Alexr- Wilson) by a young man named Sprague. Truly wonderful drawings, my dearest friends. But this person was out shooting and I did not see him. I however wrote a few lines on several of them the purports of which, I trust, will not displease him." The diary Sprague kept on this trip, in which he gave useful accounts of the settlements and topography of the Missouri River valley, is now held by the Boston Athenaeum. Sprague also illustrated several works by important naturalist Asa Gray, including his BOTANICAL TEXT-BOOK and MANUAL OF BOTANY OF THE NORTHERN UNITED STATES. Gray's wife, the editor of his letters, wrote the following description, cited in McKelvey's BOTANICAL EXPLORATION: "President, then Professor, Felton...knowing Dr. Gray was looking for someone for his scientific drawings, recommended Mr. Sprague, and he began with the illustrations for the Lowell lectures and the new edition of the BOTANICAL TEXT-BOOK. Dr. Gray was delighted with his gift for beauty, his accuracy, his quick appreciation of structure and his skill in making dissections. Mr. Sprague was from that time his chief and almost only, illustrator for his books, both educational and purely scientific." The drawings are as follow: 1) BLUE JAY. Original watercolor, 12 x 9 3/4 inches. Matted. Depicts a blue jay, beak open, perched on a branch, with a focus on the detailing of the head and feathers. Light foxing, but colors remain quite strong. A fine, precise work, in very good condition. 2) ROBIN AND HOLLY. Original watercolor, 12 x 9 3/4 inches. Matted. Marginal chipping and tape stains, not visible under mat. Tanned. Good condition, and quite visually appealing. Depicts an American Robin perched on a holly branch, with holly leaves and berries in the background. 3) PINE GROSBEAK. Pencil drawing, 15 x 11 inches. Matted. In fine condition. A fine sketch of this Western bird, labeled in pencil in the lower left corner. 4) SAVANNAH SPARROW. Original watercolor, 5 x 4 1/4 inches. Mounted on card. Some soiling and foxing. Good. A beautifully detailed small drawing, with particular attention paid to the mottled coloration of the feathers. Although none of the works is signed, each has a provenance connecting it either to a Sprague descendant or to an early owner in Sprague's native Hingham, Massachusetts. The pieces were eventually sold through Goodspeed's Book Shop in the 1960s. On the whole, a remarkable group of original works by an important ornithological and botanical illustrator, acclaimed by no lesser contemporary naturalists than Audubon and Gray. Lithographed and mounted on cloth guards throughout: tinted title with integral vignette by and after Alexandre Bida, 24 tinted plates titled in French, Arabic and English (comprising: 12 views after E. Barbot drawn on stone by Eug. Ciceri with occasional help from C. Bour; 12 costume/character studies by and after Alexandre Bida), all printed by Lemercier. Contemporary brown half morocco over blue cord-grained cloth, upper cover titled in gilt "Souvenirs / d'Egypte", spine in seven compartments with semi-raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with simple repeat decoration in gilt, cream/orange glazed endpapers. A spectacular and rare album featuring the work of two important French Orientalist artists. Only a single copy of this work is listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years, and according to Chadenat this album was never sold commercially. The twenty four uniformly excellent plates include twelve topographical views after Barbot of Egyptian sights and cities from Philae to Cairo, ancient and modern, all peopled and bustling with life. Alexandre Bida's contribution consists of twelve beautifully-observed character studies of the people he encountered in the region: an Albanian, a Copt, dancers, ladies, a donkey driver, a groom, etc. Bida, studied under Eugene Delacroix, and travelled extensively through Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Palestine. "E. Barbot" is Prosper Barbot (1798-1878), a pupil of Jules Coignet and Louis Watelet, who made two journeys to Egypt in 1844 and 1846 travelling from Cairo south across the desert. First Edition, First State with all of the first edition issue points except for page 132 (this copy has "screwed" instead of "screamed"). Includes 39 illustrations. In an attractive modern binding of three quarter red morocco with red cloth covered boards. The title and author are stamped in gilt to the spine, which has five raised bands, and a facsimile of the author';s signature is stamped in gilt to the front board. A lengthy gift inscription dating from 1993 is on one of the modern front free endpapers. Some of the illustrations have minor browning and a few spots of foxing which are visible mainly along the margins. The bottom left corners of most of the illustrations are dampstained. The pages of text, which are printed on a different type of paper, all remain very clean. Some are slightly cockled in the margin of the bottom left corner, none are dampstained. A small newspaper article has been laid in and this has resulted in minor browning on the facing page. Clean and bright overall with a tight, attractive binding. Marbled endpapers.         Narrative of an Expedition to the Shores of the Arctic Sea in 1846 and 1847

Octavo in original blindstamped green cloth with pale yellow coated endpapers and two folding maps. A minimal amount of fading to spine. A touch of foxing on the fore edge. A totally unsophisaticated copy of the book. A.B. 14097; Streeter 3715; Wagner-Camp 187. Rae's expedition, another shoe-string effort by the Hudson's Bay Company (he was given supplies for four months but was expected to be out fifteen months), was to explore the arctic coastline from Repulse Bay west to Simpson's easternmost point. He explored both sides of Committee Bay and established that Boothia was a peninsula and not an island. This title commanded large sums even in Stefansson's time, in an account of his polar library Stefansson mentions that at auction copies were going for $50 and $75 while other rare arctic titles, some by more famous men, were only getting $5 and $10. Oblong, 27.5 by 38 cm, or 10.5 by 15 inches. 23, [67] pp. Hortense was the step-daughter of Napoleon (she was the daughter of Josephine). She was married off to Napoleon's brother, Louis, who was made the king of Holland during the years 1806 to 1810. Significantly for this particular production, Hortense was the mother of Louis Napoleon, also known as Napoleon III, who at the time this opulent work was published, was the ruler of France, which thus explains the opulent commemoration of her here, as evident in the use of gold in its printing! Hortense was, in fact, of an artistic bent, and so contained herein are examples of her painting and musical compositions. There are six plates engraved by F. Sorrieu after paintings by Hortense and 24 pages of musical score by her (lyrics by the Comte de la Garde). Includes letters written by Hortense and a biography by Hippolyte Prevost. The gorgeous chromolithographs, seven in all, were done by Lemercier. Leather is rubbed and scuffed. Foxing, heavy in a few places, generally because of the card or paper.

Most illustrations and maps in excellent condition. Maps and illustrations complete according to the "Index to the Illustrations in the Manuals of the Corporation of the City of New York", published by the Society of Iconophiles, 1906. Ownership copy of Edwin D. Morgan, Esq. D.T. Valentine, New York: 1850. First edition, extraordinarily rare. The "Manuals of the Corporation" are directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York compiled by D.T. Valentine. These books include detailed information on the meetings of the Aldermen Council, ordinances passed, public officials, the city's debts, directories of hospitals, alms houses and schools, ferry schedules, lists of public porters, demographics and census information, and descriptions of historic buildings and streets. Much of the information was gleaned from Dutch and English sources, as processed by Valentine. Notable illustrations in this edition include "View of the City of New York in 1792", Fort Amsterdam, Hell Gate and the Croton Aqueduct. Maps include "New Yorke 1695", A Plan of New York in 1729 (the Bradford map redrawn), a plan from 1763 and a contemporary map. D.T. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years without being promoted to Clerk. Valentine took it upon himself to compile the "Manuals", which he updated and published annually from 1841-1866. Many copies were personalized for prominent officials. Edwin D. Morgan (1811-1883), for whom this copy was made, served as a New York councilman, alderman, senator (1850-1853) and governor (1859-1862) and one term in the U.S. Senate. He was a prominent Republican politician, and fought for the Union during the Civil War. This compendium is an excellent source of early New York City history.

A fine image from John Gould's magnificent folio work 'The Birds of Asia'. Gould notes that the chief glory of the breeding plummage of the male Sparkling Pheasant are 'the feathers of of the lower part of the back and upper tail-coverts', 'being perfect in their structure and most richly coloured'. He admits that at the time of the publication little was known of this subspecies, other than the two examples pictured were from Yokohama in Japan. The intended geographical range of "The Birds of Asia" was enormous, and very much in keeping with the seemingly limitless self- belief of the 19th-century's best known ornithologist. In his all- encompassing work John Gould includes species from all corners of the eastern world, as Richard Bowdler Sharpe noted the work covers "Species from Palestine to the eastward, and from the Moluccas to the west". Gould chose to record the bird life from an area which, with the exception of the tropical areas of the American continent, includes the widest, and most colourful variety of bird life to be found anywhere in the world. The present plate is from a large number of images documenting the pheasants of the region, one of the most beautiful and varied of all bird families. Cf. Anker 178; cf. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling, a few light foxing marks, and slight discolouration of the paper due to age. 14 1/2 x 21 1/4 inches. A fine image from John Gould's magnificent folio work "The Birds of Asia." The male Mandarin duck is the most beautiful and unusual of all the ducks. Though they once flourished in eastern Asia, they are considered endangered in their native habitat. The Mandarin duck has been a popular import to Europe since the 17th century and has a small but adapted population there. In traditional Chinese lore, the Mandarin is a symbol of conjugal affection and fidelity.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS): "I regard New York as the most remarkable town in the world

      Cooperstown, 23 October 1850. Letter. Fine condition with dark ink in a Fine folder of this exceptional letter. A remarkable 3-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED on two sheets of 8-1/2" x 6-7/8" paper by the author of THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS written on behalf of James Henry Hackett (1800ñ1871) to his old friend Charles Augustus Murray (1806ñ1895) who was at this time consul-general in Egypt. In part: After imparting news of Hackett, Cooper reports on his age and on the development of his country: "Half my time passes me, in looking back. At sixty, if a man is ever to sum up the good and evil of his past life, it is high time he began. I was sixty-one last September and have grown gray. We are 'progressing' as we Americans call it, at a famous rate. New York must have doubled its population, recently, since you saw it.... Taking all things together, I regard New York as the most remarkable town in the world.... Trade is driving all before it, and has fairly invaded Broadway.... Talking of the dust, which is so shortly to be my portion [Cooper died the next year], one of the most painful of my recollections of my own travels, is the great number of the dead, among the acquaintances I made. At one time it really seemed as if to know me was to die.... My eldest daughter, whom you may remember, has ventured to give the world a book called 'Rural Hours.' In this country it has done very well.... There is a good deal of rumbling in our body politic, but I think nothing will come of it, just now. The South has too much at stake to risk, and every day it loses, increases the disparity of the forces. This acquisition of California, hems in slavery, which must finally fall of its own weight. What we are to do with the blacks, God knows, but we shall never amalgamate." Cooper goes on to discuss the importance of gold in expanding business ("a circulating medium being the great necessity of America") and devotes a paragraph to a paranormal phenomenon which he calls "the knockings": "All attempts at explanation are failures. They are not confined to one family, or one place, but have been heard in fifty places." He closes "Do not ask Hackett about my comedy, premature damnation being best forgotten." Housed in a cloth folder titled on the spine. Hackett was a successful character actor on the New York and London stages, who was considered for a part in Cooper's sole and unsuccessful attempt at playwriting, UPSIDE DOWN. This letter was given to Hackett to present to Murray in London (and is noted by James F. Beard ed., LETTERS AND JOURNALS OF JAMES FENIMORE COOPER: 6:229, n.2 as "unlocated").

      Vewa, Feejee: Printed at the Wesleyan Mission Press, 1850 [i.e. 1852].. 72pp. plus two folding tables; 349,[2]pp. Modern three-quarter morocco and cloth, raised bands. Very good. These works were printed by Edward Martin, a Frenchman who was wrecked in an American ship among the Fiji Islands in a hurricane in 1848. Printing began in the Fiji Islands in Buthainambua in 1839 and continued, in fits and starts due to native politics and wars, until it was firmly established in Viwa in 1844. The mission press was the only press in Fiji until a commercial press was established in 1868. "The most notable book printed during this time was David Hazlewood's often reprinted COMPENDIOUS GRAMMAR... and FIJIAN AND ENGLISH DICTIONARY. This was first printed in two parts in 1852 in an edition of 700..." - Lingenfelter. The NUC locates four copies (OC, RPB, IEG, NN). The NSTC adds copies at Cambridge, British Library, and Bodleian.         The Phantom world: the history and philosophy of spirits, apparitions, &c., &c. from the French of Augustine Calmet

      Philadelphia: A. Hart, late Carey & Hart, 1850. First American edition. Hardcover. First U.S. edition. 8vo. pp. xxi, [3], 38-444. Bound in original green blind stamped publisher’s cloth. This is a tight and attractive copy with only minor rubbing to the extremities. The covers show some areas of light fading/discoloration; the rear cover contains a couple of miniscule spots of staining. The spine is faded to tan and a tiny professional repair is present to the corner of the upper head cap. Interior pages are generally clean with some very light age-toning and an occasional spot of marginal foxing. A name and date (1859) is printed on a front blank fly-leaf. A marginal corner crease is present at the top of p. 303. Augustin Calmet (1672-1757) Biblical scholar and Benedictine Abbot at Nancy and Sens. Calmet’s most famous work, his treatise on apparitions and vampires, was first published in French (1746) and later translated into English (1759). Another English edition, translated by the Rev. Henry Christmas from the third, 1751 French edition, was published in London, 1850 by R. Bentley. During the same year A. Hart of Philadelphia also published Rev. Christmas’s translation. The first part of Calmet’s book deals with several types of apparitions, demonical and otherwise. The second part gathers together and analyzes the various accounts of vampires or the walking dead which had come out of Eastern Europe during the 1720’s and 30’s. Calmet’s book quickly became popular and it helped cement the notion of a vampire in the Western European consciousness.
