Junius: Including Letters by the Same Writer Under Other Signatures. In two volumes

London - Henry G. Bohn, 1850. London - Henry G. Bohn, 1850 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart set of this investigation into the identity of the controversial political writer Junius, in an armorial fine binding. New Edition. Complete in two volumes. Featuring a page of facsimilies of the handwriting of Junius. 'To which are added his confidential correspondence with Mr. Wilkes, and his private letters to Mr H. S. Woodfall'. 'With new evidence as to the authorship, and an analysis by the late Sir Harris Nicolas'. Junius was the pseudonym of a writer who contributed a series of political letters to the Public Advertiser from 21 January 1769 to 21 January 1772 as well as several other London newspapers, such as the London Evening Post. Charges were brought against several people, of whom two were convicted and sentenced. Junius himself was aware of the advantages of concealment, as he wrote in a letter to John Wilkes dated September 18 1771. Two generations after the appearance of the letters, speculation as to the authorship of Junius was rife. Sir Philip Francis is now generally, but not universally, believed to be the author. Condition: In a full calfarmorial binding. Externally, smart with some shelfwear only. Slight marginal fading to the front board of Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean with just the odd spot or mark. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

Mexico: Julio Michaud y Thomas, [ca. 1850]. - Lithograph title-leaf and forty-five lithographic plates, twelve in full color and thirty-three on tinted grounds. Oblong folio. Later green cloth spine and corners over original printed green boards. Some wear and soiling. Quite clean internally. Images bright and fresh. Very good. The first great Mexican lithographic and color plate book, and a very difficult book to obtain in nice condition. Though the album is undated, it contains battles scenes of the Mexican-American War (1846-1847) and depicts the equestrian statue of Carlos IV in the courtyard of the University, from where it was removed in 1852, suggesting a date of circa 1850. The colored plates depict various inhabitants in their local costumes standing amid sweeping terrain and graceful plazas. These include rancheros, tortilleras, and local Indians among others. The tinted views show Vera Cruz, Mexico City, the Independence Fountain, the National Theatre, Chihuahua, the Bay of Acapulco, and numerous other locales. The final six plates show scenes from the Mexican-American War, showing the "heroica defensa" put up by the Mexican Army. The number of plates in this work varies from thirty- nine to forty-nine, and seems to have been issued on an on-demand basis. The Mellon copy at Yale has thirty-nine plates, and, in their cataloguing, Yale refers to the book as the "first major color plate book produced in Mexico." The Bancroft Library holds a copy with forty- nine plates. The copies at the University of Texas and the University of Missouri have forty-five plates, as in the present copy. The only other copy we locate on OCLC is one at the National Library of Art in Britain. The DeGolyer copy at SMU is not present in OCLC, but their copy also has forty-five plates, as do two copies we know of in private collections. The six Mexican-American War views are at the end of the book, suggesting that they were added to the original assemblage of thirty- nine plates. The best study of this work is the Condumex reprint edited by W. Michael Mathes in 2000. The publisher, Julio Michaud, was a native of France who moved to Mexico and worked there as a publisher and bookseller from the 1830s to the 1860s. His partner was also a transplanted Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Thomas. Michaud later dealt in photographic material and was himself a photographer. A rare and beautiful work. MEXICO ON STONE, 56. PALAU 5417.

An extraordinary collection of 26 photographic portraits of leading photographers

Various processes, 1850s-90s. - 26 photographs. Various processes. Many of the portraits were taken at the studios of the photographers themselves. This superb collection of photographs of photographers documents the spread of photography from its inventor Daguerre through the art’s earliest practitioners in the United States and ultimately to the great photographers of the Civil War and the American West. The collection begins with a portrait of Louis Daguerre. Portraits of American photographic pioneers include Samuel Morse, who brought Daguerre’s process to America, and John William Draper, the American scientist who helped to perfect it. Mathew Brady, greatest of all 19th-century American photographers, is represented by a fine CDV portrait and an image from the end of the war in which Brady inserts himself into a group portrait of U.S. Grant’s staff. Brady trained photography giants Alexander Gardner and Timothy O’Sullivan, both of whom are represented with stunning portraits. Finally, the collection includes runs of portraits of photographers who made famous portraits of Lincoln, associates of Gardner, American regional photographers, some with their photographic equipment, and photographers of the American West including William Henry Jackson and Carleton Watkins. This remarkable assemblage of rare portraits, which would be impossible to duplicate at any price, vividly documents the lineage of photography from Daguerre through his leading heirs in the United States. Examples include: 1. Louis Daguerre. Inventor of photography 2. Samuel Morse. Artist and inventor who introduced the daguerreotype to America and trained the first generation of American photographers. 3. John William Draper. Pioneering photographer who made crucial improvements to the daguerreotype and who took the first successful pictures of the moon and of a woman’s face. 4. Mathew Brady. Towering figure in 19th-century American photography. “More than any other American, Brady shaped the role of the photographer as a national historian” (Trachtenberg). 5. Alexander Gardner. Leading Civil War photographer and pioneer of photojournalism. 6. Timothy O’Sullivan. Major Civil War photographer who took the first 44 photos in Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the War, and later a major photographer of the American West. 7. Carleton Watkins. Giant of photography of the American West and “the greatest American photographer before Stieglitz” (Naef) 8. William Henry Jackson.         Wuthering Heights & Agnes Grey

Smith, Elder & Co, London 1850 - The book is firmly and squarely bound in contemporaneous half leather with marbled boards, the boards are somewhat bumped and rubbed, and there have been minor, but skilled, repairs to the corners. The text block looks little read, it is slightly age toned, with minor foxing to the earlier and later leaves, it is free from inscriptions. The book is contained within a custom made, velvet lined box, with leather labels to the spine. The second edition is arguably as important as the first, Charlotte edited the text, applying many of the corrections that the despicable Newby had failed to make to the first edition, as well as significantly cutting down many of the longer passages in order to allow it to be issued as a single volume, it is also the first edition to include the sisters poems. It was published three years after the first edition in December 1850 by Smith, Elder and Company, Charlotte already having a working relationship with the rather less unscrupulous George Smith, who had published Jane Eyre for her. The text then became the basis of all reprints for approximately the next hundred years. The majority of copies of the second edition appear with an altered 1851 date to the title page, to make them more suitable for the following year, but as these turn up with catalogues dated as late as 1855, so one suspects that these were still being sold for several years after the original publication. This copy has the more desirable 1850 title page, identifying it as being from the earliest print run and the true second edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Wiley and Putnam [&] New York. Wiley and Putnam [&] New York. First edition, first printing of the Journal of an African Cruiser.. Edges rubbed; some light foxing; very good copy.. Clark A14.1; BAL 7597, printing A. 2 vols in 1, 8vo, contemporary black quarter morocco, marbled paper sides, gilt lettering. Inscribed by Bridge on the half-title: ?Miss Woodbury / With the Compliments [of] / The Author.? The ?of? was shaved by the binder. Miss Woodbury was Virginia L. Woodbury, as she has signed her name on the title-page of the Lamartine title and dated it January 19, 1850. She was almost certainly one of the four daughters of Levi Woodbury (1789-1851), the prominent New Hampshire politican and later Supreme Court Justice. Levi Woodbury, as secretary of the treasury, approved Hawthorne's appointment to the post of measurer at the Boston Custom House in1839. Horatio Bridge's importance to Hawthorne's literary career and their friendship has been well documented.

Barth 23719. - Band I : Das Mittelalter (1. [..]
