        THE SCARLET LETTER

Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850. FIRST EDITION, First Issue, with advertisements dated March 1, 1850, and with the misprint on p. 21, line 20 "reduplicate" for "repudiate." n. Hardcover. The First Major American Novel,In Excellent Bayntun Morocco. 181 x 111 mm (7 1/8 x 4 3/8"). iv, 322 pp., 4 pp. (ads). FIRST EDITION, First Issue, with advertisements dated March 1, 1850, and with the misprint on p. 21, line 20 "reduplicate" for "repudiate.". FINE MODERN DARK BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY BAYNTUN (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with single gilt fillet border, raised bands, spine gilt in single-ruled compartments containing an antique-style letter "A," gilt titling and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Original blindstamped brown cloth covers bound in at rear. Contained in a protective red velvet bag. Front flyleaf with bookplate of Robert LeGresley. BAL 7600. Leaves a shade less than bright (as in the typical copy), occasional corner creases, isolated spots of mild foxing, otherwise A FINE COPY, the text clean and fresh, and in a pristine binding. This is a volume of firsts: the first edition, first issue of Hawthorne's first novel, his first publication for Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, and generally recognized as the first major American novel. Described by Day as "Hawthorne's masterpiece and one of the world's greatest novels," "The Scarlet Letter" probes the nature of sin, guilt, repentance, and salvation. Set in Salem in the early years of the Massachussetts Colony, the story tells of the scarlet "A" (standing for "adultery") embroidered on the dress of Hester Prynne, and the secret "A" searing the heart of her child's father, the seemingly saintly Reverend Dimmesdale. According to ANB, "Hawthorne's tightly plotted, densely symbolic, and psychologically probing story of concealed and revealed sin in seventeenth-century Boston is his most serious work of moral and cultural history. In his day as in ours, readers struggle to understand its main characters in the context of a repressive society. Arguably, Hawthorne's greatest achievement is his heroine Hester Prynne." One of the major figures in the history of literature in the United States, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-64) was among those who first inspired the idea of "American literature," a national literature that could take its place alongside its well-established European forebears. Probably more than any other writer of stature in 19th century America, Hawthorne combined vivid imagination with careful, structured craft. The press run for this title was 2,500, so the book is not difficult to find for sale, but well-preserved copies in original cloth are quite uncommon now. Consequently, an attractively bound copy like the present one (with original covers and spine bound in) is a desirable alternative. (The book may be purchased without the bag.).

ALBUM OF FIFTEEN WATERCOLORS OF PLANTS, FLOWERS, FRUIT, AND A BIRD].

[American. nd, ca. ]. 1850 - Fifteen watercolors total, heightened with gum arabic, ranging in size from 2 x 2 inches, to 7 x 6 inches. The illustrations are bordered either by lace or gilt and affixed to colored paper, or are done on a sheet with a lithographic border. Interleaved with blank colored pages, some of them with stamped or lithographic borders. Quarto. Original morocco album, elaborately stamped in blind and gilt, expertly rebacked in matching style, a.e.g. A bit of light rubbing to extremities of boards, corners worn. Internally clean, with the colors very bright. Near fine. In a half morocco and cloth box. A lovely album of quite accomplished amateur watercolors depicting plants, flowers, fruit, and a bird. The style of the album binding is American, as are some of the tree leaves illustrated, but neither the album nor any of the illustrations are signed. It is evidently the work of a talented amateur, skilled in the use of watercolors. Each illustration has been carefully highlighted with gum arabic in order to heighten certain colors or shades. Among the images is a bouquet of autumnal oak leaves, a branch of plums, a group of cherries, a rose, pansies, and several other plants and flowers. One of the largest and most striking illustrations is of a bird perched upon a leafy branch with blue coloring on its head and back, brown feathers at the tips of its wings, and a white belly. A very appealing example of the mid-Victorian fashion for creating personal albums of artistic renderings of nature.

Tesselated Pavements from the Earliest Christian Churches at Rome. A. Part of Pavement from Sta. Maria in Trastevere XIIth Ceny. B.C._ Two Designs in Outline from Sta. Maria Maggiore. Vth Century

[London: Thomas McLean, 1850. Color printed lithograph with hand-finishing. A superb and colorful plate from the seminal "Specimens of Ornamental Art" Ludwig Gruner designed this study of motifs of ancient and Renaissance classicism while he resided in England. There he had participated in the design of the Crystal Palace and advised Prince Albert and Queen Victoria on acquisitions for what would become the Victoria and Albert Museum. Indeed, this sumptuous work on Roman and Italian design was dedicated to Prince Albert. His bold renditions of largely forgotten Classical pictorial ideas excited a revival in interest in earlier ages and cultures and spawned Owen Jones' work on ornamental motifs generally. But Gruner's grand, striking visual quotes from Italian palaces, churches and ancient buildings resonated with the Imperial mindset of England, France and Germany and established Classicism, once again, as the appropriate mode of architecture and design for rulers.

Speeches of Sir William Molesworth , Bart. M.P. in the House of Commons during the Session of 1850, on the Bill for the Better Government of the Australian Colonies

London: James Ridgway, 1850. Octavo, 76 pp., very good in recent half green cloth, marbled boards. Important speech on transportation. A heated address to parliament delivered by Sir William Molesworth, a radical English M.P. who significantly contributed to the demise of transportation to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. Author of the famous 1837 report condemning transportation, Molesworth consistently advocated political self-determination for the colonies. In this speech he speaks in stark terms of the consequences of denying freedom to the Australian colonies while continuing convict transportation en-masse. He eloquently surmises their frustration: 'many of the colonists, unfortunately believing their rulers to be selfish and faithless, have begun to despair, and in despair ask one another how they can redress their grievances'. Molesworth then warns that the Canadian rebellion and agitation at the Cape Colony are openly discussed in Australia as viable alternatives to the present status quo. Directed against recalcitrant members of the Colonial Office, Molesworth's speech draws upon the British loss of American colonies to stress the need for urgent change: 'we ought to maintain our colonial empire; because we knew that discontent prevailed throughout our colonies; because we believed that a train of errors, similar to that which lost us the United States, was endangering the colonial possessions that remained… because we despaired of any such reform coming from the Colonial Office.' From the Bonython collection, with bookplate, and later from the library of Dr. Robert Edwards AO.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Schaumburg, 10. I. 1850. - 10¼ SS. auf 6 (= 3 Doppel-)Blatt. 4to. An Karl Frh.

Friendly and Feejee Islands: a missionary visit . [with] A Second Missionary Visit to the Friendly and Feejee Islands .

      - London, Mason 1850 & 51. Two volumes octavo publishers red cloth blocked in blind and gilt; folding map and six wood engraved plates in the first book. A well tended pair since new, with a respectable Wesleyan provenance. Both are inscribed as a birthday present to Mrs Tait from her "old pupils" Betsy, Mary and Maria in October 1851 at Bass Lane House. These "old pupils" were, in 1851, between eight and thirteen and are the daughters of cotton mill owner John Robinson Kay, grand-daughters of Richard Hamer (each of his three daughters inherited a cotton mill). Mary Hamer married Kay in 1834 and their home was Bass Lane House in Bury. Kay was a stalwart Methodist and built the Summerseat Methodist School - next to his Wesleyan church; he seems to have pretty much built an entire Wesleyan village. The records of well-to-do, well meaning society and Methodist Societies of the period are buckshot with ackowledgments to the Kays and their relatives, in much the same way that pockets of Lancashire still are peppered with landmarks bearing their names. The pencil inscription "JR Kay" on one endpaper suggests that the books possibly came back to the Kays from Mrs Tait. Lawry was an early Wesleyan presence in the south seas, arriving in Sydney in 1818 and missionising Tonga in the early twenties. The first book here is his journal of his return in 1847 - after some twenty five intervening years of mixed success, or failure, as a churchman and missionary - and his visit to Fiji; augmented by an appendix gathering the present state of Fiji. The second book records his second tour in 1850. The immediate narrative of such an integral figure in the taming of the most savage south seas made these books modest best-sellers and neither are rare; but such well cared for copies paired since birth, with thoroughly proper ownership, are.       - Milano, coi Tipi di Giuseppe Bernardoni, 1850/1851. PRIMA EDIZIONE.

Zeitung vom 5. 9. 1917). - Umschlag etwas fleckig, sonst gutes, unbeschnittenes Exemplar im Orig.-Lieferungszustand. - Goed. XIII 389, 56. Borst 2396.
