[United States. ca. 1850?]. - Four individual sheets, three matted and one mounted on card. Some scattered foxing, affecting two of the watercolors. Generally very good. Isaac Sprague (1811-95) was one of the most prolific and well-known illustrators of flora and fauna in 19th-century America. STAFLEU & COWAN lists seven composite works, ranging from 1848 to 1891, that included Sprague's illustrations, in addition to his WILD FLOWERS OF AMERICA and FLOWERS OF THE FIELD AND FOREST, both published in 1882. He is particularly remembered for accompanying John James Audubon on his expedition up the Missouri River in 1843, aiding the master painter with ornithological sketches and drawings; the two first met on August 19, 1840, when Audubon admired the young artist's bird drawings. Audubon recorded the meeting in a journal entry: "Saw some very remarkable drawings of birds (far better than any ever made by the immortal Alexr- Wilson) by a young man named Sprague. Truly wonderful drawings, my dearest friends. But this person was out shooting and I did not see him. I however wrote a few lines on several of them the purports of which, I trust, will not displease him." The diary Sprague kept on this trip, in which he gave useful accounts of the settlements and topography of the Missouri River valley, is now held by the Boston Athenaeum. Sprague also illustrated several works by important naturalist Asa Gray, including his BOTANICAL TEXT-BOOK and MANUAL OF BOTANY OF THE NORTHERN UNITED STATES. Gray's wife, the editor of his letters, wrote the following description, cited in McKelvey's BOTANICAL EXPLORATION: "President, then Professor, Felton.knowing Dr. Gray was looking for someone for his scientific drawings, recommended Mr. Sprague, and he began with the illustrations for the Lowell lectures and the new edition of the BOTANICAL TEXT-BOOK. Dr. Gray was delighted with his gift for beauty, his accuracy, his quick appreciation of structure and his skill in making dissections. Mr. Sprague was from that time his chief and almost only, illustrator for his books, both educational and purely scientific." The drawings are as follow: 1) "Blue Jay." Original watercolor, 12 x 9 3/4 inches. Matted. Depicts a blue jay, beak open, perched on a branch, with a focus on the detailing of the head and feathers. Light foxing, but colors remain quite strong. A fine, precise work, in very good condition. 2) "Robin and Holly." Original watercolor, 12 x 9 3/4 inches. Matted. Marginal chipping and tape stains, not visible under mat. Tanned. Good condition, and quite visually appealing. Depicts an American Robin perched on a holly branch, with holly leaves and berries in the background. 3) "Pine Grosbeak." Pencil drawing, 15 x 11 inches. Matted. In fine condition. A fine sketch of this Western bird, labeled in pencil in the lower left corner. 4) "Savannah Sparrow." Original watercolor, 5 x 4 1/4 inches. Mounted on card. Some soiling and foxing. Good. A beautifully detailed small drawing, with particular attention paid to the mottled coloration of the feathers. Although none of the works is signed, each has a provenance connecting it either to a Sprague descendant or to an early owner in Sprague's native Hingham, Massachusetts. The pieces were eventually sold through Goodspeed's Book Shop in the 1960s. On the whole, a remarkable group of original works by an important ornithological and botanical illustrator, acclaimed by no lesser contemporary naturalists than Audubon and Gray. McKelvey, BOTANICAL EXPLORATION, pp.834-36. STAFLEU AND COWAN 12.635 and 12.636 (ref). BM NATURAL HISTORY V:1993 (ref).

Paolo Andrea Molina, Milan 1850 - Large paper presentation copy of this Byzantine history by a hold-out pagan who often took a jaundiced view of the policies, practices and actions of the Christian rulers. As stated on the title page, this is the first published version in Italian, and that in itself is significant as scholarship was emerging from the clerical yoke which had stifled it in so many ways following the Counter-Reformation on the Italian peninsula. [iv], 316 pp. 6 full page engravings; folding map of Armenia, Media, etc. -- the area between the Black and Caspian Seas. 4to, about 30 by 21 cm, or 11 by 8 inches. A few pages at rear remain uncut. Some scattered light foxing. A little heavier on half-title. Later decorated cloth boards with unusual red sunburst-like diaper pattern, which is bound in red leather spine. Boards are of a card stock thickness and don't lay entirely flat but flatten easily when shelved. Binding is tight. More on the substance of the work: the Church for obvious reasons sought to discredit him and his history, and by the same token, he has had his proponents for challenging the received history. This version of the work is especially scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Boca Tigris on the Pearl River

Chinese, circa 1850 - Tingua and his studio Chinese, c. 1845-1855 Gouche on pith paper Framed size: 17 1/4” x 21 1/2” The studio of the artist Tingqua was perhaps the most prolific source of Chinese export painting during the nineteenth century. Located at 16 China Street, Guangzhou, the school specialized in gouache and watercolor paintings influenced by Western artistic traditions. These works became known in America primarily through the American China trader Augustine Heard, who brought a substantial collection of Tingqua paintings back to the United States in ca. 1855. These are now located at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Tingqua was from a family of Chinese artists, each of whom were recognized for there skills in painting scenes suitable for the export market. His father, Guan Zuolin, often known by his western name, Spoilum, was the first identifiable artist of the Cantonese export school. These exquisite little views absolutely typify Tingqua’s style and technique. All four works display the Tingqua denotation of the sea by regular parallel lines, sometimes with ripples in the foreground. Moreover, his characteristic mannerism of representing trees as thick clusters of yellow-green leaves is amply demonstrated in his paintings of the Canton Waterfront with the U.S. Steamer “Spark” and Whampoa Anchorage with American, British and Danish Shipping. These watercolors also illustrate the diversity of countries trading in China, particularly in the former work, with the flags of the American, British, French and Danish nations displayed prominently along the skyline. Above all, Tingqua’s work is perhaps most recognized for its exquisite characterization of daily life and for its exceptional detail. The precision of the brushwork and concentration upon light effects is superb, and in each scene the importance of world trade with China is beautifully displayed.

Isola Bella , Lago Maggiore; and the Bell Tower of Bellagio, Lago Como]

[Italy 1850 - A fine pair of late 'Grand Tour' images of two of the jewels of Northern Italy Lake Maggiore "has a surface area of about 213 km , a maximum length of 54 km and, at its widest, is 12 km. . The lakes jagged banks are surrounded by the Prealps of Piedmont and Lombardy. The western bank is in Piedmont (provinces of Novara and Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and the eastern in Lombardy (province of Varese), whereas the most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres into Switzerland, where it constitutes the lowest point above sea-level in that entire country. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa . Isola Bella is one of the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in north Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 meters from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 meters long by 400 meters wide and is entirely occupied by the Palazzo Borromeo and its Italianate garden [completed in 1671]." (wikipedia).         Illustrations of Missionary Scenes, An Offering to Youth

Joseph Scholz, Mayence 1850 - N.d., circa 1850s. A scarce collection of twenty hand-colored plates of lurid, often grisly scenes of torture, sadism, mayhem, surely meant to shock and frighten children. Just the sort of imagery to garner an "R" rating, but in the era of "Slovenly Peter", the children were thought to have been made of sturdier stuff, undoubtedly. The images are divided among West Africa, India, New Zealand, the American Northwest and China. While the artistic execution may not be of the highest level, the vividness of the imagery more than compensates. In this copy the text leaves are heavily foxed or soiled, as an inevitability given the cheap paper stock used, while the plates themselves, on heavier stock paper, are only lightly soiled. The binding is tight, with more modern endpapers. The half leather is modern while the pebbled cloth boards is original. The cloth has some blistering, with more such spots on the rear cover. He explored both sides of Committee Bay and established that Boothia was a peninsula and not an island. This title commanded large sums even in Stefansson's time, in an account of his polar library Stefansson mentions that at auction copies were going for $50 and $75 while other rare arctic titles, some by more famous men, were only getting $5 and $10.         Hog Hunting. The Tired Pig

Published by Messr. Fores, 41 Piccadilly, London 1850 - An extremely rare aquatint depicting hog hunting in India. During the nineteenth century, field sports, particularly the hunting of wild game, were a common colonial leisure activity in India and Africa. Big-game hunting was considered the most thrilling and dangerous pursuit but hog hunting was also a favorite pastime for sporting Englishmen in the colonies. This superb image depicts an exciting hog hunt in India. A group of young Englishmen, all identified by name in the title space, are eagerly involved in chasing a wild boar across a grassy plain. This is one of a series of four large aquatint plates after Captain Platt, all with the general title 'Hog Hunting'. They were also issued separately (as here) and are all extremely rare and not often seen on the market. This is one of the finest images of English sportsmen in India. "John Platt, b. 1802, son of the Reverend Alexander Platt, was a Captin of the Native Infantry in India at the time he painted this set of Hog HUnting. He served in India from the age of eighteen, took part in the China War [First Opium War] in 1842 and was promoted Lt. Col. in 1853. His record shos him to have been a coldier of action with several decorations. He died on 1st July 1857, tragicallly murdered by mutineers from his own regiment." Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints. Snelgrove, p. 130; Silterzer p. 335; Schwerdt III p. 122. Colour-printed aquatint, finished by hand, by Messrs. Fores. Sheet size: 27 7/8 x 36 1/4 inches.

      N. p., 22. III. 1850. - Large 4to. 2¼ pp. on double leaf. To an American friend, expressing her willingness to encourage and support the Hungarian revolutionaries, who had left Hungary after the Revolution of 1848 frequently injured and destitute. She praises their courage and moral values, and affirms the importance of the liberal attitude and America's support for Europe in this period: "Les soupirs qui proviennent d'une respiration libérée servent le bien-être de ceux qui en sont les auteurs [.] J'apprends par votre lettre que vous n'avez point reçu la correspondance que je croyais vous avoir prié d'accepter [.] L'édition qui doit être vendue au profit des Hongrois prisoniés, date de l'an 1850 muni d'une préfaçe qui marque son but. [.]
