Boca Tigris on the Pearl River

Chinese, circa 1850 - Tingua and his studio Chinese, c. 1845-1855 Gouche on pith paper Framed size: 17 1/4” x 21 1/2” The studio of the artist Tingqua was perhaps the most prolific source of Chinese export painting during the nineteenth century. Located at 16 China Street, Guangzhou, the school specialized in gouache and watercolor paintings influenced by Western artistic traditions. These works became known in America primarily through the American China trader Augustine Heard, who brought a substantial collection of Tingqua paintings back to the United States in ca. 1855. These are now located at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Tingqua was from a family of Chinese artists, each of whom were recognized for there skills in painting scenes suitable for the export market. His father, Guan Zuolin, often known by his western name, Spoilum, was the first identifiable artist of the Cantonese export school. These exquisite little views absolutely typify Tingqua’s style and technique. All four works display the Tingqua denotation of the sea by regular parallel lines, sometimes with ripples in the foreground. Moreover, his characteristic mannerism of representing trees as thick clusters of yellow-green leaves is amply demonstrated in his paintings of the Canton Waterfront with the U.S. Steamer “Spark” and Whampoa Anchorage with American, British and Danish Shipping. These watercolors also illustrate the diversity of countries trading in China, particularly in the former work, with the flags of the American, British, French and Danish nations displayed prominently along the skyline. Above all, Tingqua’s work is perhaps most recognized for its exquisite characterization of daily life and for its exceptional detail. The precision of the brushwork and concentration upon light effects is superb, and in each scene the importance of world trade with China is beautifully displayed.

Isola Bella , Lago Maggiore; and the Bell Tower of Bellagio, Lago Como]

[Italy 1850 - A fine pair of late 'Grand Tour' images of two of the jewels of Northern Italy Lake Maggiore "has a surface area of about 213 km , a maximum length of 54 km and, at its widest, is 12 km. . The lakes jagged banks are surrounded by the Prealps of Piedmont and Lombardy. The western bank is in Piedmont (provinces of Novara and Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and the eastern in Lombardy (province of Varese), whereas the most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres into Switzerland, where it constitutes the lowest point above sea-level in that entire country. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa . Isola Bella is one of the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in north Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 meters from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 meters long by 400 meters wide and is entirely occupied by the Palazzo Borromeo and its Italianate garden [completed in 1671]." (wikipedia). Bellagio is located at the point at which the Lakes Como and Lecco divide. From Lake Como, one sees the beautiful Romanesque Bell Tower handsomely portrayed here by Bartezzati.         Illustrations of Missionary Scenes, An Offering to Youth

Joseph Scholz, Mayence 1850 - N.d., circa 1850s. A scarce collection of twenty hand-colored plates of lurid, often grisly scenes of torture, sadism, mayhem, surely meant to shock and frighten children. Just the sort of imagery to garner an "R" rating, but in the era of "Slovenly Peter", the children were thought to have been made of sturdier stuff, undoubtedly. The images are divided among West Africa, India, New Zealand, the American Northwest and China. While the artistic execution may not be of the highest level, the vividness of the imagery more than compensates. In this copy the text leaves are heavily foxed or soiled, as an inevitability given the cheap paper stock used, while the plates themselves, on heavier stock paper, are only lightly soiled. The binding is tight, with more modern endpapers. The half leather is modern while the pebbled cloth boards is original. The cloth has some blistering, with more such spots on the rear cover.         Narrative of an Expedition to the Shores of the Arctic Sea in 1846 and 1847

London: T. & W. Boone 1850, 1st Edition. () viii,247,[1]pp. + 8pp. (publisher's ads). Very good. Octavo. Bound in an attractive half morocco and marbled boards binding. Two folding maps. Maps have been refolded and have minor professional repairs. A touch of browning to the edges of the paper. A very nice copy. A.B. 14097; Streeter 3715; Wagner-Camp 187. Rae's expedition, another shoe-string effort by the Hudson's Bay Company (he was given supplies for four months but was expected to be out fifteen months), was to explore the arctic coastline from Repulse Bay west to Simpson's easternmost point. He explored both sides of Committee Bay and established that Boothia was a peninsula and not an island. This title commanded large sums even in Stefansson's time, in an account of his polar library Stefansson mentions that at auction copies were going for $50 and $75 while other rare arctic titles, some by more famous men, were only getting $5 and $10..

Published by Messr. Fores, 41 Piccadilly, London 1850 - An extremely rare aquatint depicting hog hunting in India. During the nineteenth century, field sports, particularly the hunting of wild game, were a common colonial leisure activity in India and Africa. Big-game hunting was considered the most thrilling and dangerous pursuit but hog hunting was also a favorite pastime for sporting Englishmen in the colonies. This superb image depicts an exciting hog hunt in India. A group of young Englishmen, all identified by name in the title space, are eagerly involved in chasing a wild boar across a grassy plain. This is one of a series of four large aquatint plates after Captain Platt, all with the general title 'Hog Hunting'. They were also issued separately (as here) and are all extremely rare and not often seen on the market. This is one of the finest images of English sportsmen in India. "John Platt, b. 1802, son of the Reverend Alexander Platt, was a Captin of the Native Infantry in India at the time he painted this set of Hog HUnting. He served in India from the age of eighteen, took part in the China War [First Opium War] in 1842 and was promoted Lt. Col. in 1853. His record shos him to have been a coldier of action with several decorations. He died on 1st July 1857, tragicallly murdered by mutineers from his own regiment." Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints. Snelgrove, p. 130; Silterzer p. 335; Schwerdt III p. 122. Colour-printed aquatint, finished by hand, by Messrs. Fores. Sheet size: 27 7/8 x 36 1/4 inches.

While in London Newman took part in a spirited debate with some Christians on the Messianic prophecies. At an advanced age he sailed for America and settled in New York, gaining a livelihood as teacher and writer. In 1850 he published a work entitled 'The Challenge Accepted, ' consisting of a series of dialogues between a Jew and a Christian respecting the fulfilment of the prophecies on the advent of the Messiah. He published also: 'Emendations of the English Version of the Old Testament, ' 1839; a 'Hebrew and English Lexicon, ' 1841; and a Hebrew grammar, which was much used for elementary instruction among English Jews.       N. p., 22. III. 1850. - Large 4to. 2¼ pp. on double leaf. To an American friend, expressing her willingness to encourage and support the Hungarian revolutionaries, who had left Hungary after the Revolution of 1848 frequently injured and destitute. She praises their courage and moral values, and affirms the importance of the liberal attitude and America's support for Europe in this period: "Les soupirs qui proviennent d'une respiration libérée servent le bien-être de ceux qui en sont les auteurs [.] J'apprends par votre lettre que vous n'avez point reçu la correspondance que je croyais vous avoir prié d'accepter [.] L'édition qui doit être vendue au profit des Hongrois prisoniés, date de l'an 1850 muni d'une préfaçe qui marque son but. [.]

Michel Levy,, Paris, 1850 - In-4° (278x187mm), pp. (4), 625, (1), legatura coeva m. pelle verde con titolo, filetti e fregi romantici in oro al dorso. Bei tagli marmoreggiati. Sguardie marmoreggiate. 20 incisioni f.t. Only one of the manuscript arrangements is signed and dated: "Clementine Steiner ... Marz 1853." Most of the printed scores were published by the famous Viennese music publisher and composer Anton Diabelli in the Euterpe series from the 1840s and 1850s.The manuscript leaves consists of about 17 short pieces and 18 longer works (most of which range from four to 10 pages each). Among the scores in manuscript are piano arrangements from Wagner's Der fliegende Hollander, Rienzi, Lohengrin, and Tannhauser. Also included are arrangements from operas by Verdi, Donizetti, Meyerbeer, and Gounod. The music is neatly written in ink (with one short section in pencil), most likely in two different hands, with the titles, tempos, and lyrics in German. Bound-in after the manuscript scores are 10 printed scores ranging from three to 13 pages each. These include waltzes by Josef Strauss, H.C. Lumbye, Joseph Lanner, and others; and various extracts from operas by Bellini arranged for piano by Anton Diabelli. III, 295. 7 volumes bound in one. Large octavo. 19th century quarter dark green leather with marbled boards. Engraved throughout. Binding quite worn, rubbed and bumped; tear to portion of spine. Occasional minor foxing and small defects. A very good copy overall. . "Between 1827 and 1847 Mendelssohn composed six string quartets, and had begun work on a seventh at the end of his life (the Andante and Scherzo from op.81 may have belonged to this final project). The first two, op.13 in A minor (1827) and op.12 in E (1829), show a rapprochement with the late quartets of Beethoven. To the Swedish musician Adolf Lindblad Mendelssohn explained his concern for the organic relationship of the various movements to the whole. In op.12 the opening of the first movement is brought back to conclude the finale; in op.13 the quintessential thematic material is drawn from the lied Frage (op.9 no.1), with explicit quotations from the song in the outer and more hidden references in the inner movements of the quartet. The three quartets op.44, written during the idyllic period of Mendelssohn's honeymoon and first year of marriage, show signs of a Classical tendency. In striking contrast is the discordant last quartet, op.80 in F minor, generally viewed as Mendelssohn's response to the death of his sister." R. Larry Todd in Grove online

Bound album of 34 drawings (20 by Corbould, 14 by Unwins)

England, 1820-1850 - The English illustrator HENRY CORBOULD (1787-1844), studied at the Royal Academy (with among others, Fuseli) and he quickly developed a taste for neo-classical historical painting. He soon concentrated "his efforts - on perfecting a delicate, rather feminine, neo-classical style which suited the purposes of refined Regency book illustration. During the remainder of his career he was 'extensively employed by publishers to make drawings for engravings, and the number of his designs, which adorn many books amount to several hundreds' (J. Britton, The autobiography of -, 2.172). This is also reflected in those works he continued to send to the Royal Academy exhibition, which were predominantly compositions of a sentimental and literary genre, commissioned to illustrate the novels of Walter Scott or the poetry of Byron and Crabbe. As was the case with J. F. Dove's edition of Fanny Burney's Cecilia, or, Memoirs of an Heiress (1825), many of Corbould's illustrations were turned into steel-engravings by his cousin Charles Heath; in other instances they were reproduced in fashionable media such as lithography and stipple engraving -" (ODNB). The 20 small Corbould drawings in this album (one of which is signed), are typical of his book work: his portrait of William Shenstone, possibly for Samuel Johnson's LIVES OF THE POETS; the design for the engraved title-page of "THE GRACES, OR LITERARY SOUVENIR -London | Printed for Hurst and Robinson, 1824"; an illustration for Hugh Kelly's, MEMOIRS OF A MAGDALEN ("Sir Robt Harold coldly endeavouring to console Miss Mildmay | Vol. 1, p. 48"); and numerous illustrations for various adventures and romances, as yet to be identified. Corbould's contemporary, THOMAS UWINS (1782-1857), also was able to enter the Royal Academy Schools, where he exhibited miniature portraits, and contributed illustrations to Rudolf Ackermann's Westminster Abbey (1812), Oxford University (1814), Cambridge University (1815), and Public Schools (1816). Eventually, Uwins evolved to larger forms and while living for several years in Rome, Venice, and Naples, began to paint in larger forms in oil. His illustration work includes Shakespeare, Virgil, Horace, King Arthur and the Round Table, Robinson Crusoe, etc. The 14 exquisite drawings displayed here amply display his skill and mastery of the small, watercolor illustration Pen and ink, watercolor, and wash drawings mounted; one signed by Corbould, 3 signed by Unwins. Double-matted and handsomely bound on hinges in full brown morocco. A few drawings show minor foxing, but overall beautifully preserved [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Belliss. antip. inc. in rame. [307]

Karte uber eine Reise von Independence nach Santa Fe, Chihuahua, Monterrey und Matamoros von . . .

Braunschweig 1850 - "Frederick Adolphus Wislizenus, M.D., last heard of in 1840, headed for Chihuahua in 1846, and after being exiled for six months joined Doniphan's expedition on its trip home. In 1848, the Senate published his 'Memoir of a tour to Northern Mexico'. [.] 'A tour from Independence to Santa Fe, Chihuahua, Monterrey and Matamoros,' [.] is just what its title indicates. Many routes and caravan routes are shown in Texas, and the author's route is displayed in detail, along with the mountains he could see on either side of his long trail. (Wagner Camp 159; 30th Congress, 1st Session, Senate Misc. Doc. 26). A German edition, with the same maps (titles translated) was published at Braunschweig in 1850, the text having been translated by George M. Von Ross." (Wheat, Vol 3, 10)"In 1848 Dr. A. Doniphan's expedition, in 1846 and 1847,' with two maps, one of the journey and the other of the geological phenomena he had seen. The first is a map of considerable value, though it does not extend west of the New Mexico settlements nor north of the Arkansas River. A number of routes to New Mexico and across Texas are shown, and Doniphan's campaign is carefully followed from Independence, through New and Old Mexico to the camp of June 2nd, 1847, at Reynosa, near the mouth of the Rio Grande." (Wheat, Vol 3, 53-4), Size : 490x400 (mm), 19.25x15.75 (Inches), Hand Colored in Outline, 0 Very Good, lower left margin has been extended.
