Chart of the Bay of San Pablo Straits of Carquines and part of the Bay of San Francisco California by . Ringgold assisited by Simon F. Blunt . Projected, constructed & drawn by Fred. D. Stuart . assisted by A.H. Campbell

Washington, D.C. 1850 - Rare unfolded thick paper issue of this important early chart of San Francisco bay and its environs by the 'Gold Rush Surveyor' (A.F. Houston) This rare separately issued map sheet is one of the results of a series of surveys carried out under Cadwalader Ringgold's's leadership between August 1849 and June 1850. The California gold rush had brought home the fact that there was an urgent need for accurate charts of the route from the Golden Gate up river to Sacramento and beyond to the area around Sutter's Fort on the American River. The local government and business community moved quickly: the San Francisco newspaper Alta California (20 June 1849) noted that 'A subscription is on foot among our business men to survey and buoy the Suisun bay and the Sacramento river between the port and Sacramento city. Captain Ringgold, USN, has been employed to make the survey, and there is every prospect that it will be speedily accomplished' The results of the survey were published in Ringgold's A series of charts, with sailing directions, embracing surveys of the Farallones, entrance to the bay of San Francisco, bays of San Francisco and San Pablo, straits of Carquines and Suisun Bay, confluence and deltic branches of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers and the Sacramento River (with the middle fork) to the American River, including the cities of Sacramento and Boston, State of California. (Washington: J.T. Towers, 1851), with the charts, folded and printed on thin paper. The present example is from the rare series of charts printed on thick paper, unfolded and intended for use on board the vessels wishing to make the hazardous journey up river to Sacramento. Cf. Alan Fraser Houston 'Cadwalader Ringgold, U.S. Navy' in California History , vol.79, Winter 2000; cf. Cowan (II), pp. 533-534; cf. Howes-Hartley R-301; cf. Kurutz 536c; cf. Rocq 11146; Rumsey 4658.001; cf. Sabin 71425; cf. Streeter Sale 2679. Lithographic map, by C.B. Graham from Ringgold's survey. Sheet size: 31 1/8 x 21 5/16 inches. In good condition, on later backing paper with a number of small repaired marginal tears.

        FREIGHT LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE. DON JUAN.

[ca. s]. 1850 - A very fine drawing, pen and black ink over pencil. Image 25 1/2 x 41 inches, wide margins. Ink ruled border. Calligraphic title and mechanical specifications within upper image. Signed lower left: "Z. Colburn, Del." Uniform light age-toning with unobtrusive light scattered foxing. Excellent condition. Impressive carved hardwood frame and gilt liner, French mat. A large and visually impressive schematic drawing of the locomotive engine, Don Juan, stopped on a section of track, probably prepared to illustrate a private report for an American railroad company. This finely detailed drawing of the Don Juan is fully seven times the size, and more sharply delineated, than Colburn's well known railroad lithographs, executed in 1858 by Julius Bien and found in THE PERMANENT WAY AND COAL BURNING LOCOMOTIVES., a comparative economic and technological analysis of British and European railway systems, with their American counterparts. The mechanical specifications of the powerful Don Juan are finely inked above its smokestacks: "DIAM of CYLINDER, 18 in. STROKE of PISTON, 20 in. DIAM. of DRIVERS, 42 in. WT. of ENGINES, 24 tons. WATER room in boiler, 96 cubic ft. STEAM do. 48 cubic ft. CAPACITY of do. 718 gallons. TUBE SURFACE, 928 sq. ft. FIRE BOX do. 60 sq. ft. AREA OF GRATE, 11-1/12 sq. ft." A rare and eminently displayable piece of 19th- century American railroadiana, this is the first Colburn drawing we have encountered, and a remarkable example of virtuosity in graphics. See Zerah Colburn & Alexander L. Holley, THE PERMANENT WAY AND COAL-BURNING LOCOMOTIVE BOILERS OF EUROPEAN RAILWAYS WITH A COMPARISON OF THE WORKING ECONOMY OF EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN LINES, AND THE PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH IMPROVEMENT MUST PROCEED (New York, 1858), passim. Illustrated with fifty- one engraved plates; the frontispiece, of the passenger engine, Canute, is very much in the style of the present drawing.

Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples.

Painting of a Coved Ceiling by Giulio Romano in the Palazzo Vecchio at Mantua

      - A wonderfully detailed chromolithograph by Lewis Gruner measuring from his book ‘Specimens of Ornamental Art Selected from the Best Models of the Classical Epochs’ published in London by Thomas M'Lean in 1850. This print measures approximately 19.5” x 25” During the 19th century, “pattern books” became popular in Europe, which gave access to decorative elements recorded from cultures all over the world. Gruner’s Specimens of Ornamental Art contains illustrations of ornamental detail found on Italian architecture from the 12th - 15th centuries. This volume is considered to be one of the finest examples of color printing, or chromolithography, from the 19th century. Overall this print is in very good condition with some light foxing/staining and a few small tears in margins.

Paintings of a Coved Ceiling by Giulio Romano in the Palazzo Vecchio at Mantua

[London: Thomas McLean, 1850. A superb and colorful plate from the seminal "Specimens of Ornamental Art" Ludwig Gruner designed this study of motifs of ancient and Renaissance classicism while he resided in England. There he had participated in the design of the Crystal Palace and advised Prince Albert and Queen Victoria on acquisitions for what would become the Victoria and Albert Museum. Indeed, this sumptuous work on Roman and Italian design was dedicated to Prince Albert. His bold renditions of largely forgotten Classical pictorial ideas excited a revival in interest in earlier ages and cultures and spawned Owen Jones' work on ornamental motifs generally. But Gruner's grand, striking visual quotes from Italian palaces, churches and ancient buildings resonated with the Imperial mindset of England, France and Germany and established Classicism, once again, as the appropriate mode of architecture and design for rulers. Color printed lithograph with hand-finishing.

Original boards, cloth spine with paper label, rebacked, one corner bent. Light toning, but very good. First Separate Editions. Mallet, an Irish engineer and inventor, was a pioneering researcher on earthquakes, and his four reports on earthquakes, published in the journals of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, represent the first scientific work on the subject. Mallet coined the term "seismology" to describe the scientific study of earthquakes, and was also responsible for the terms "epicenter," "seismic focus" (the point at which an earthquake originates), "angle of emergence," "isoseismal line" (contour or line on a map bounding points of equal intensity for a particular earthquake), and "meizoseismal area" (area of maximum earthquake damage). "He produced an experimental seismograph in 1846. Important elements of his model, which was never actually used, were incorporated in the seismograph that Luigi Palmieri made in 1855. Between 1850 and 1861 Mallet set off explosions in different locations to determine the rate of travel of seismic waves in sand (825 feet per second), solid granite (1,665 feet per second) and quartzite (1,162 feet per second). According to A. Sieberg (1924), Mallet should be considered the founder of the physics of earthquakes. . . . Mallet presented his most important seismic results in four Report[s] to the British Association (1850, 1851, 1852-54, 1858) and in four editions of the Admiralty Manual of Scientific Enquiry (1849, 1851, 1859, 1871). Between them, they contain an extensive catalog-which he prepared and debated with his son, John W. Mallet-of 6,831 earthquakes reported between 1606 B.C. and A.D. 1858 and his seismic map of the world" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). We are offering Mallet's copies of his first, second and third reports, with his corrections and emendations. Accompanying these is the Earthquake Catalogue of the British Association, which incorporates Mallet's third and fourth reports. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Scarlet Letter

Ticknor and Fields, Boston 1850 - One of 2,500 copies published of this true first edition, on 16 March 1850, according to C.E. Frazier Clark Jr.'s definitive "Nathaniel Hawthorne - A Descriptive Bibliography". Number A16.1 in Clark's bibliography and number 7600 in BAL. This copy is in the following states and sub-states, again as described by Clark: Binding: in the style of Ticknor format A. Brown bold-ribbed T cloth with blind-stamped floral device inside ruled panels on both covers. Spine gold-stamped. Cream-colored wove endpapers. The contents are listed on pp. iii-iv and there is no preface. This is a key indicator of the first edition versus the second edition, which includes a preface. The other variants between the first and second editions are also present. These consist of sixty-nine typographical and spelling errors and punctuation changes throughout the text. For example, on page 21 line 20 "reduplicate" appears instead of "repudiate." Two of these variants (pg 31 line 20 and pg 132 line 29) are not as listed but these appear to be errors in Clark's list. Page 321 is in State x1 - line 10 has presence of work-up. Page iii is in State a2 - the "N" is beneath the "r" in "according" and the "1" of "192" is out of position. Four pages of ads were inserted between the front endpapers in most copies. This copy does not have any ads. It is unclear if they were lost or if this is one of the copies that never had ads. The text block is complete, although the stitching has loosened. The leaves are clean and unmarked except for a previous owner's name, dated 1850, on the front pastedown. The boards are in good condition, with some wear at the corners. The spine is in tatters, however, with some pieces missing. It is held to the boards with transparent tape. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ueber eine veranderte Form des zweiten Hauptsatzes der mechanischen Wärmetheoriein" in Annalen der Physik und Chemie 93 (12) 1854: 481-506

      - FIRST EDITION of the seminal paper in which Clausius fully presents his milestone formulation of the second law of thermodynamics, namely, that "Heat can never pass from a colder to a warmer body without some other change, connected therewith, occurring at the same time." In his 1850 paper, the first on this subject, Clausius defines the relationship between work and heat and introduces the concept of "energy of a body" (equivalent to temperature), thus stating the ideas behind the first and second law of thermodynamics. This 1854 paper was the second of his works. In it, Clausius first develops the concepts of interior work, i.e. "those which the atoms of the body exert upon each other," and exterior work, i.e. "those which arise from foreign influences which the body may be exposed", which may act on a working body of fluid or gas, typically functioning to work a piston. He then discusses the three types of heat by which Q may be divided: 1. heat employed in increasing the heat actually existing in the body; 2. heat employed in producing the interior work; 3. heat employed in producing the exterior work. Building on this logic, and following his mathematical presentation of the first fundamental theorem, Clausius then presents us with the first-ever mathematical formulation of entropy. The third paper, published in 1865, invents and first uses the word 'entropy.'. CONDITION & DETAILS: Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Bart 8vo. Beautifully rebound in half leather over marbled paper covered boards; raised bands on the spine; gilt-lettering. Two small interior library stamps. Near fine condition.

FOUR ORIGINAL ORNITHOLOGICAL WATERCOLOR AND PENCIL DRAWINGS BY 19th- CENTURY BOTANICAL AND ZOOLOGICAL ARTIST ISAAC SPRAGUE].

[United States. ca. 1850?]. - Four individual sheets, three matted and one mounted on card. Some scattered foxing, affecting two of the watercolors. Generally very good. Isaac Sprague (1811-95) was one of the most prolific and well-known illustrators of flora and fauna in 19th-century America. STAFLEU & COWAN lists seven composite works, ranging from 1848 to 1891, that included Sprague's illustrations, in addition to his WILD FLOWERS OF AMERICA and FLOWERS OF THE FIELD AND FOREST, both published in 1882. He is particularly remembered for accompanying John James Audubon on his expedition up the Missouri River in 1843, aiding the master painter with ornithological sketches and drawings; the two first met on August 19, 1840, when Audubon admired the young artist's bird drawings. Audubon recorded the meeting in a journal entry: "Saw some very remarkable drawings of birds (far better than any ever made by the immortal Alexr- Wilson) by a young man named Sprague. Truly wonderful drawings, my dearest friends. But this person was out shooting and I did not see him. I however wrote a few lines on several of them the purports of which, I trust, will not displease him." The diary Sprague kept on this trip, in which he gave useful accounts of the settlements and topography of the Missouri River valley, is now held by the Boston Athenaeum. Sprague also illustrated several works by important naturalist Asa Gray, including his BOTANICAL TEXT-BOOK and MANUAL OF BOTANY OF THE NORTHERN UNITED STATES. Gray's wife, the editor of his letters, wrote the following description, cited in McKelvey's BOTANICAL EXPLORATION: "President, then Professor, Felton.knowing Dr. Gray was looking for someone for his scientific drawings, recommended Mr. Sprague, and he began with the illustrations for the Lowell lectures and the new edition of the BOTANICAL TEXT-BOOK. Dr. Gray was delighted with his gift for beauty, his accuracy, his quick appreciation of structure and his skill in making dissections. Mr. Sprague was from that time his chief and almost only, illustrator for his books, both educational and purely scientific." The drawings are as follow: 1) "Blue Jay." Original watercolor, 12 x 9 3/4 inches. Matted. Depicts a blue jay, beak open, perched on a branch, with a focus on the detailing of the head and feathers. Light foxing, but colors remain quite strong. A fine, precise work, in very good condition. 2) "Robin and Holly." Original watercolor, 12 x 9 3/4 inches. Matted. Marginal chipping and tape stains, not visible under mat. Tanned. Good condition, and quite visually appealing. Depicts an American Robin perched on a holly branch, with holly leaves and berries in the background. 3) "Pine Grosbeak." Pencil drawing, 15 x 11 inches. Matted. In fine condition. A fine sketch of this Western bird, labeled in pencil in the lower left corner. 4) "Savannah Sparrow." Original watercolor, 5 x 4 1/4 inches. Mounted on card. Some soiling and foxing. Good. A beautifully detailed small drawing, with particular attention paid to the mottled coloration of the feathers. Although none of the works is signed, each has a provenance connecting it either to a Sprague descendant or to an early owner in Sprague's native Hingham, Massachusetts. The pieces were eventually sold through Goodspeed's Book Shop in the 1960s. On the whole, a remarkable group of original works by an important ornithological and botanical illustrator, acclaimed by no lesser contemporary naturalists than Audubon and Gray. McKelvey, BOTANICAL EXPLORATION, pp.834-36. STAFLEU AND COWAN 12.635 and 12.636 (ref). BM NATURAL HISTORY V:1993 (ref).

Der zweite Teil behandelt die Geologie und die Mineralogie. Charles Bonnet (1816-1867), französischer Geologe aus Vesoul betrieb 1846 eine Kohlenmine in der Algarve.
