        19 Original-Zeichnungen.

Deutschland / Österreich, um 1850.. Bleistiftzeichnungen, farbig aquarelliert.

Over 500 engravings from designs of W. Croome and other artists including six colored plates using the cromolithography process. All 6 color plates are present with the original tissue guards on each. Each plate is in fine condition. Many of the plates in this book have been reproduced and sold individually. Especially popular to reproduce is the black and white plate of the "Texas Ranger" on page 356. 640 pages. A very important book of the history of Mexico, Texas, and the Southwest . Due to the age of the book foxing is present on all pages, but the clarity of the text or illustrations is not affected. A 1 1/2 in closed tear is at the top of page 11. The book has an early owner's name written in that has not been identified. This book has been thoroughly inspected for missing pages and illustrations and any defects. The book has been rated as in Near Fine condition. A superb copy that you will likely not find anywhere in this condition.

The Henpecked Husband. Mrs. Cluckington. 'I'll teach you to be out late at-night-again in'.". all written in Leech's hand

n.p., [c. 1850] - John Leech (1817-1864) was one of the most prolific and successful of the English artists and caricaturists of the mid 19th century. "His humour was like his talent, gentle, warm-hearted and positive, his world, the ups and downs of middle class life, the sports of the squirearchy, and the peccadilloes of army officers and undergraduates" (Houfe). The conventions of social humor he established with his first contributions to the newly founded Punch, in 1841, lasted into the 1920s, but his greatest fame came through his book illustrations, particularly those for Surtees's sporting novels. "Extravagantly praised by Ruskin, Leech's often careless but never crude drawings have survived in charm and humour to give us a refreshing glimpse of mid-Victorian society." (Houfe) 5 3/4 x 4 3/2 inches. Pen and ink and watercolor on paper, initialled "J Leech" on lower left, mounted in larger sheet of paper, matted. Fine

        ACCOMMODATION BILL

1850. Fine. PHILLIPS, Watts. AN ACCOMMODATION BILL. Drawn by Watts Phillips, which he trusts will be accepted by the public. [London]: D. Bogue, [n.d., circa 1850]. First edition. 18 leaves of plates, accordion fold, in the original illustrated paper boards. 5 1/2 by 3 7/8 in. (13.7 x 9.8 cm). Covers have a touch of rubbing and edgewear, and some general light soiling, else a fine and quite pleasing copy. Title information is taken from the illustrated cover. The story is a satire relating the trials of trying to recover a loan made to a friend; the back cover, showing a fly caught in a spider's web, provides a graphic summation of the tale. Watts Phillips (1825-1874) was the only pupil of George Cruikshank. He was an early contributor to Punch, and the founder of the short-lived periodical Journal for Laughter. He gradually abandoned caricature and illustration for success as a dramatist and, less successfully, as a novelist. (D.N.B.; Houfe, Dict. of Brit. Bk. Illus. & Caric.).

Histoire Naturelle des Crustacés, des Arachnides et des Myriapodes...Précédée de l'Histoire Naturelle des Annélides par M. le Comte De Castelnau. Paris.

Leamington, UK: Brierly, Printer, [1850]. Broadside [28.5 cm by 22 cm]. Three horizontal folds and one vertical fold at the center. A few small nicks at the fold ends. There are no known institutional copies. "There will be a Special Service on Sunday Evening, January 13, 1850, when elder A. Cordon, H.P. from the camp of Israel, will deliver a discourse on the Literal Gathering of the Twelve Tribes of Israel; and On Sunday Evening, January 20, Elder John Toone, Jun. Will Deliver A Discourse on The First Principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Public are respectfully entreated to attend And for as much as the different denominations of professing Christians are crying out delusion! delusion!! or at least, allowing other ministers from a distance to do so - The Latter-day Saints take this opportunity of publicly inviting all men of whatever class or character, to come to their Preaching Room and try their principles by the only true standard, - THE BIBLE. They lay themselves open for discussion; and particularly invite those gentlemen of the different denominations who are called Leaders of the Church - or Ministers of the Gospel. They will, with all cheerfulness, allow any one to prove to them how they err; and in case of conviction, they will gladly and publicly acknowledge it, and adopt any means to further the purposes which are recorded in the Word of God: - For verily and truly the Lord hath said that in the last days he would set up a kingdom, and it shall be done. "Let God be true, though every man a liar." They publicly acknowledge the ordinance of Baptism for the remission of sin, and laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, and anointing with oil in the name of the Lord for the restoring of the Sick. Service each Evening will commence at Half-past six." Flake/Draper 6779b.5

        Souvenirs d'Egypte

Lemercier, Paris 1850 - (22 1/8 x 16 3/8 inches). Lithographed and mounted on cloth guards throughout: tinted title with integral vignette by and after Alexandre Bida, 24 tinted plates titled in French, Arabic and English (comprising: 12 views after E. Barbot drawn on stone by Eug. Ciceri with occasional help from C. Bour; 12 costume/character studies by and after Alexandre Bida), all printed by Lemercier. Contemporary brown half morocco over blue cord-grained cloth, upper cover titled in gilt "Souvenirs / d'Egypte", spine in seven compartments with semi-raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with simple repeat decoration in gilt, cream/orange glazed endpapers A spectacular and rare album featuring the work of two important French Orientalist artists. Only a single copy of this work is listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty-five years, and according to Chadenat this album was never sold commercially. The twenty four uniformly excellent plates include twelve topographical views after Barbot of Egyptian sights and cities from Philae to Cairo, ancient and modern, all peopled and bustling with life. Alexandre Bida's contribution consists of twelve beautifully-observed character studies of the people he encountered in the region: an Albanian, a Copt, dancers, ladies, a donkey driver, a groom, etc. Bida, studied under Eugene Delacroix, and travelled extensively through Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Palestine. "E. Barbot" is Prosper Barbot (1798-1878), a pupil of Jules Coignet and Louis Watelet, who made two journeys to Egypt in 1844 and 1846 travelling from Cairo south across the desert. Hardcover. The First Major American Novel,In Excellent Bayntun Morocco. 181 x 111 mm (7 1/8 x 4 3/8"). iv, 322 pp., 4 pp. (ads). FIRST EDITION, First Issue, with advertisements dated March 1, 1850, and with the misprint on p. 21, line 20 "reduplicate" for "repudiate.". FINE MODERN DARK BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY BAYNTUN (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with single gilt fillet border, raised bands, spine gilt in single-ruled compartments containing an antique-style letter "A," gilt titling and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Original blindstamped brown cloth covers bound in at rear. Contained in a protective red velvet bag. Front flyleaf with bookplate of Robert LeGresley. BAL 7600. Leaves a shade less than bright (as in the typical copy), occasional corner creases, isolated spots of mild foxing, otherwise A FINE COPY, the text clean and fresh, and in a pristine binding. This is a volume of firsts: the first edition, first issue of Hawthorne's first novel, his first publication for Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, and generally recognized as the first major American novel. Described by Day as "Hawthorne's masterpiece and one of the world's greatest novels," "The Scarlet Letter" probes the nature of sin, guilt, repentance, and salvation. Set in Salem in the early years of the Massachussetts Colony, the story tells of the scarlet "A" (standing for "adultery") embroidered on the dress of Hester Prynne, and the secret "A" searing the heart of her child's father, the seemingly saintly Reverend Dimmesdale. According to ANB, "Hawthorne's tightly plotted, densely symbolic, and psychologically probing story of concealed and revealed sin in seventeenth-century Boston is his most serious work of moral and cultural history. In his day as in ours, readers struggle to understand its main characters in the context of a repressive society. Arguably, Hawthorne's greatest achievement is his heroine Hester Prynne." One of the major figures in the history of literature in the United States, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-64) was among those who first inspired the idea of "American literature," a national literature that could take its place alongside its well-established European forebears. Probably more than any other writer of stature in 19th century America, Hawthorne combined vivid imagination with careful, structured craft. The press run for this title was 2,500, so the book is not difficult to find for sale, but well-preserved copies in original cloth are quite uncommon now. Consequently, an attractively bound copy like the present one (with original covers and spine bound in) is a desirable alternative. (The book may be purchased without the bag.).

By John Lindley and Joseph Paxton.

London, Bradbury & Evans, 1850-1853. 3 volumes. 4to (258 x 202mm). pp. iv, 194; 186; 178, with 105 (of 108) fine handcoloured lithographed plates and 314 text-figures. Contemporary half calf, backcover hinge of one volume loose. One of the most attractive works on garden flowers by two eminent British botanists. In our copy plates 79-81 are lacking. The excellent plates are by L. Constans. 'L. Constans and E.A. Prévost, both of whom were working about 1840-50, produced paintings of miraculous fine quality' (Blunt & Stearn p. 268). Sir Joseph Paxton (1803-1865) was head gardener to the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth, where he achieved the first blooming of the 'Victoria amazonica'. Paxton's successes at Chatworth brought him numerous commissions for the design of large scale public gardens. He is also well known for his periodical 'Paxton's Magazine', published in 16 vols from 1836-49. However the illustrations for the above work are superior to that in the 'Magazine'. /John Lindley (1799-1865) was assistant librarian of Sir Joseph Banks and became professor of Botany at the University College London and was Britain's pioneer orchidologist. He published a number of important botanical books such as the 'Sertum Orchidaceum' and the 'Digitalium Monographia'. Like Paxton he was one of the founders of the 'Gardener's Chronicle'. 'He was one of the most eminent, industrious, versatile, public-spirited and productive of Victorians - gardener - botanist, botanical artist, author of textbooks, university professor, editor and journalist' (Stearn).//A few plates with some very slight foxing. There is some more foxing to the text which is printed on inferior paper.//A second edition of the 'Flower Garden' was published in 1882-84 with inferior chromo-lithographed plates. //Great Flower Books 65; Nissen BBI, 1498; Pritzel 5369.         THE EMIGRANT'S GUIDE TO NEW MEXICO, CALIFORNIA, OREGON: GIVING THE DIFFERENT OVERLAND AND SEA ROUTES

New York: John Disturnell, 1850.. viii,[3]-80pp. plus folding map, 22 x 19 1/2 inches. 16mo. Original cloth, front cover stamped in blind and gilt. Hinges neatly repaired, map skillfully reinforced along fold lines, minor foxing. Very good. In a half morocco slipcase, cloth chemise. This is the third, and best, edition of this critical guide of the routes to New Mexico, California and Oregon, published to guide travellers to the California Gold Rush. Howell described this as one of the scarcest editions of the Disturnell GUIDE, and Streeter believed his copy to have been one of only two located examples (however, Kurutz now locates six copies). The first edition appeared in 1849, with the second edition published about a month later. The first and second edition maps did not contain the descriptions of the southern routes to California; and the maps differ radically in the amount of information included. The present third edition is by far the best, notable for containing the first printing of J. Calvin Smith's map, incorporating the Gold Region additions in an inset map of California, and for showing the southern routes across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. "Disturnell inserted into the 1850 edition three leaves (pages iii-viii) entitled 'California in 1850.' This addition features descriptions of the new and thriving cities and towns 'which have sprung into existence, as if by magic, since the discovery of the extensive placers, on the tributaries of the Sacramento River in the early part of 1848" - Kurutz. A rare and important western map and overland guide. HOWES D351, "b." WAGNER-CAMP 167a:3. WHEAT, GOLD REGION 171. WHEAT, TRANSMISSISSIPPI WEST 692. KURUTZ 196c. STREETER SALE 3158. HOWELL 50:59D.
