Provenance: Henri-Charles-Ferdinand-Marie-Dieudonné d?'Artois, duc de Bordeaux, Comte de Chambord (1820-1883), pretender to the throne of France: supra-libros; with an autograph letter of presentation from the author on a vellum leaf bound in between title and half-title; Don Jaime de Bourbon, duc de Madrid (1870-1931, Chambord?'s legatee), red inkstamp on vellum dedication leaf; with Maggs Bros, catalogue 661 (1938), 172; Bernard Breslauer (Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, 33).*** first edition, magnificent ?"royal?" presentation copy, of a treatise on the origins of language, written and published by a wealthy collector, dealer in stolen manuscripts, and ardent Royalist. Joseph Barrois (ca. 1785-1855) was an erudite but eccentric and indeed crooked bibliophile who became fatally involved with the notorious and unpunished book thief Guglielmo Libri, who, in his capacity of inspector of public instruction, traveled throughout France surveying libraries and pillaging them. Barrois is known to have taken in ?"Libri?'s?" manuscripts and had them rendered unrecognizable through rearrangement of quires, rebinding, mutilation, etc. The unsigned binding was confidently attributed by Bernard Breslauer to the Parisian binder Thompson, who assisted Barrois in these fraudulent activities. Barrois also compiled his own valuable manuscript collection, about a tenth stemming from compromised sources (cf. Delisle). Foreseeing Libri?'s conviction, he had the collection discreetly shipped to England in 1849, and sold to the Earl of Ashburnham (cf. Delisle, pp. xl-xlii; most but not all were eventually repurchased by the French government). Convicted in 1850, Libri himself remained comfortably in England, where he was wined and dined by the likes of Panizzi, Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum. In the present work, published the year of Libri?'s conviction, Barrois explores the origins of language in gesture and phonetics, postulating an original universal (Indo-European) language shared by Assyria, India, and China. He traces its roots through cuneiform, hieroglyphics, and classical Greek, and declares the Phoenician digital or finger-alphabet to have been the source of many other writing systems, including Lap, Sanskrit, Chinese, Aztec and other Amerindian languages. The work contains chapters on classical mythology, the mnemonics of Homer, theatrical pantomime in Terence and Vergil, sacred letter symbolism in various religions, and detailed analyses of symbols and letterforms. A 35-page glossary of Greek words concludes the treatise. The lithographs reproduce lapidary inscriptions and relevant details from manuscripts and other works of Antiquity or the Middle Ages found in the Louvre, the museums of Berlin and other largely French collections. Maxime Lalanne, who executed the lithographs, was the author of a manual on etching; he may have been related to the Ludovic Lalanne who worked with Henri Bordier on the commission charged with documenting Libri?'s thefts, a thankless task, honorably fulfilled, which led to Libri?'s conviction in 1850. In the inserted autograph letter, written on vellum, Barrois presents this large-paper copy to the pretender to the title of Henri V (?"whose unfortunate insistence upon his divine rights and upon the scrapping of the Tricolore in favour of the white standard of the Bourbons probably cost him the throne... ?"- Breslauer, BBB), having had it regally attired in a sumptuous neo-fanfare binding, probably by Thompson, a Parisian binder of English origin who signed very few of his bindings. The technically impeccable gold-tooling may have been the work of Thompson?'s finisher Marius Michel père. Ramsden notes that Thompson?'s ?"passion for book-collecting is said to have dissipated his earnings as a binder.?" Brunet VI (Table méthodique) 640, 10551; Bernard Breslauer, Historic and Artistic Bookbindings from the Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, 33. On Barrois and Libri, cf. Léopold Delisle, Catalogue des manuscrits des fonds Libri et Barrois (1888), pp. xxxviii ff.; on Bordier?'s commission see André Jammes, Libri vaincu: Enquêtes policières & secrets bibliographiques (2008).

        Autograph letter signed.

No place, 7. IV. 1850.. 4to. 1 p.. In French: "I am nothing but an honest man, and among humanity, I have no other passion than Justice and Truth. I am with those who suffer, with those who love, with those who work. I am filled with disgust with all forms of tyranny and I have only one wish in the world: to do away with weapons and chains. Your letter, so noble and painful touched my heart deeply. If I had to be rewarded, your thanks will reward me beyond the little I ve done and the little I am worth. Tell the one you love, and whose absence causes you to suffer, that I hold out to him a fraternal hand. Alas, why, in our France, there still are prisons and chains! Please receive, Madame, my deepest respect". - Mounting remnants on verso.

View of New Orleans Early Nineteenth Century

[New York 1850 - Steel printing plate (7 1/16 x 9 3/4 inches), with engraved image (5 3/16 x 8 1/8 inches), above lettered title 'View of New Orleans Early Nineteenth Century' with no engraver or publisher's name. A fascinating example of an original printing plate engraved with a wonderful view of early-nineteenth century New Orleans from the Mississippi The present image shows Jackson Square in New Orleans in its ante-bellum heyday, viewed from the Mississippi. A number of ships ply to and fro, including an early example of a paddle-boat powered by steam. The phrase 'early nineteenth century' suggests that the plate should be dated to at least the middle of the century. A 'circa 1850' date seems likely as steel-engraving as a method of illustration for topographical works was already on the wane by the late 1850s.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Charles Darwin").

Down, Farnborough, Kent, 3. III. [1850].. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt mit Siegel und eh. Adresse verso (Faltbrief). 8vo.. Unveröffentlichter Brief an den deutschen Paläontologen und Malakologen Wilhelm Bernhard Rudolf Hadrian Dunker (1809-85) am Polytechnikum in Kassel: "Sir / I hope that you will forgive the very great liberty I take in addressing you. - I have been for some time employed on a monograph on recent & fossil Cirripedia: I applied to my friend Mr. J[ohn] Morris to know to whom I could apply for any fossil specimens from Germany, & he tells me that you of all others are most likely to be willing & able to help a stranger. - Owing to the kindness of Prof. [Johannes] Steenstrup of Copenhagen I have the loan of some Pollicipes Hausmanni (& I know some perfectly accurate drawings & descriptions) & of P. Bronnii & P. carinatus of [Rudolf Amandus] Philippi, but I am most curious to see the species described by [Friedrich Adolph] Roemer, viz. P. uncinatus, gracilis, glaber, asper, &c. &c. &c.; or any undescribed specimens. - Can you aid me with regard to Roemer's species? I would carefully return them, & pay carriage both ways, as fas as may be possible. - As my name will probably be unknown to you, I may mention, as a proof that I am devoted to Natural History, that I went as Naturalist in the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle round the World & collected in all branches of Nat. History. I trust to your kindness to forgive my intruding myself on you, & beg to remain, with much respect / Sir / Your faithful servant / Charles Darwin / Any parcel ought to be directed to C. Darwin Esq., 7 Park St., Grosvenor Sq., London". September in London. Darwins "Fossil Cirripedia of Great Britain" erschien im April 1851; im Vorwort dankt Darwin seinen Korrespondenten auf dem Kontinent: "Having applied to Professor W. Dunker, of Cassel, for some of the species described by various German authors, he not only sent me many specimens out of his own collection, but procured from Messrs. Roemer, Koch, and Philippi, other specimens of great value; and to these most distinguished naturalists I beg to return my very sincere thanks." & Koch". - Nicht in The correspondence of Charles Darwin, Bd. 4: 1847-1850 (Cambridge 1988). Niagara Falls [General View 23 - not titled)

[New York]: [published by Goupil, Vibert & Co.], 1850. . Good. Hand-coloured lithograph, New York & Paris [probably printed in the latter]. 1849-1851. Title ["The Rapids at Niagara" 18] and other description line trimmed off thus the paper size is much smaller than was originally printed. Paper size: 8-3/4 x 12-1/8 inchesImage size: 7-3/8 x 11 inchesCondition: Some light soiling and wear, a couple of old fold lines on the top left side in border, clouds in sky a pinkish colour, otherwise image is very good. The "General View" shows the sweep of the falls as seen from afar, with small figures in the foreground enjoying the sites. A lovely image of the famous falls. Lane, Impressions of Niagara 216. Kollner was a prolific and long-lived Philadelphia artist (he lived until 1908), working with most of the major firms in the city before striking out on his own. He produced a large series of views of American cities between 1848 and 1851, and these views of Niagara are among his works from that period. "At mid-century August Köllner produced an ambitious portfolio of fifty four lithographs, entitled Views of American Cities, which included eight images of the Niagara River. Though small in size, these lovely prints were of finer quality than the mass-produced popular lithographs. Whether sold as a set in the portfolio or as separate prints, they would have appealed to those who wanted top quality works of art" - Lane.

The principles and practice and explanation of the machinery of locomotive engines

London: John Weale, 1850-1853. Tredgold, Thomas (1788-1829). The principles and practice and explanation of the machinery of locomotive engines . . . [Vol. II: The principles and practice and explanation of the machinery used in steam navigation . . .; Vol. III: The principles and practice and explanation of the construction of the steam engine . . .]. 3 vols. in 4, 4to. Multi-volume set. 227 plates, mostly folding, plus folding table. London: John Weale, 1850-53. 310 x 235 mm. Half maroon vellum, cloth sides ca. 1853, light wear & staining, spines faded. Tears along folds of some plates, light toning, fore-edges a bit frayed, otherwise very good, elegantly bound. Stamp of the Oxford & Cambridge University Club on verso titles. Third edition of Tredgold's The Steam Engine, revised and considerably expanded from the one-volume first edition (1827) and two-volume second (1838). Tredgold's work on the steam engine was long considered the best and most complete work of its kind. Tredgold died shortly after the publication of the first edition; the later editions, issued by the well-known engineering publisher John Weale, were prepared by different editors and augmented with contributions from other authors describing recent technological advances. The three editions trace the progress of steam power from the time of Watt to the mid-nineteenth century, and illuminate the development of two new practical engineering sciences: thermodynamics and machine design. The third edition of Tredgold's work is divided into three volumes: Vol. I is devoted to locomotive engines, Vol. II (consisting of separate text and atlas vols.) is on steamship engines, and Vol. III discusses the construction of steam engines, boilers and the turbine wheel. DNB. Finch, Engineering Classics, pp. 104-110 (discussing the first edition).

Naval Tactics and Trials of Sailing; illustrated by diagrams of the several evolutions

London: Charles Wilson (at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy), 1850. Quarto, with seven plates (five folding), and many illustrations in the text, many highlighted in red and blue; occasional light spotting, one plate browned; good in slightly rubbed original green cloth, gilt. Handbook for war at sea. First edition of this important study of naval tactics by the experienced mariner George Biddlecombe, RN. In this work Biddlecombe provides a substantial and detailed review of British naval tactics at mid-century, and his work was much studied at the time (although it came to be criticized for its overly cautious and mechanistic approach). For several years Biddlecombe served as master of the St Vincent, which bore Admiral Sir Charles Napier's flag from 1847 to 1849, and it is this 120-gun vessel that is depicted under sail as the frontispiece. By the time he wrote this work Biddlecombe was safely ensconced as the master of Her Majesty's Yacht Victoria and Albert, but few officers had seen more active service in their career. He served on the famous HMS Blonde and was part of the rescue of HMS Challenger off the coast of Chile in June 1835 (so ably described by another participant, FitzRoy of the Beagle). In his later career he reconnoitred many parts of the Baltic, and was influential in the region until he took up the position of assistant master attendant at Keyham yard, Devonport, in 1855, being promoted to master attendant of Woolwich yard in 1864. He was knighted by the queen at Windsor on 26 June 1873 and received a Greenwich Hospital pension soon afterwards. This work is not commonly seen, especially in such handsome condition. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Robert T. Tempest of York.

The Cape of Good Hope and the Eastern Province of Algoa Bay

London - Pelham Richardson, 1850 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The very scarce first edition of this work on the settlements on theCape of Good Hope. With folding map of the Cape, frontispiece and one other plate, as well as numerous vignette illustrations (collated complete). With chapters on law, religion, the discovery and occupation, agriculture, trade and commerce and much more. Also including many tables of data relevant to the growth of the community on the Cape. The first European to reach the cape was the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, who named it the Cape of Storms (Cabo das Tormentas). It was later renamed by John II of Portugal as Cape of Good Hope (Cabo da Boa Esperana) because of the great optimism engendered by the opening of a sea route to India and the East. The land around the cape was home to the Khoikhoi people when the Dutch first settled there in 1652. The Khoikhoi had arrived in these parts about fifteen hundred years before. They were called Hottentots by the Dutch, a term that has now come to be regarded as pejorative. Condition: In a blindstamped cloth binding. Externally, sound, though with some bumping and dampstaining. Sunning to the spine, and slight splitting to the cloth on the rear joint. Internally, generally firmly bound, although one folding map is detached with some loss, closed tears and foxing. Hinges strained. Ink signature to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages are bright, though with some scattered patches of foxing and some handling marks. Overall: GOOD due to wear to map, but still a nice, bright copy..

        Ali Baba:

Glasgow - For the Booksellers, 1850 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A disbound chapbook with illustrated title page. This is a small chapbook, with an engraving of a man on the front cover. Ali Baba is a fictional character based in Ancient Arabia. He is described in the adventure tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, part of The Book of One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights). Some critics believe that this story was added to The Book of One Thousand and One Nights by one of its European transcribers, Antoine Galland, an 18th-century French orientalist who may have heard it in oral form from an Arab story-teller from Aleppo. Condition: This chapbook is disbound. The binding is loose and all pages are separate. There are handling marks, small stains and a few brown spots throughout. These marks do not affect the visibility of the text. There are splits to the binding area, and a small split to the outer edge, of page 15/16..

Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey. A New Edition, Revised, with a Biographical Notice of the Authors, a Selection from their Literary Remains, and a Preface, by Currer Bell. [Second Edition]

Published by Smith Elder & Co., 65, Cornhill, London. Second Edition 1850, 1851. 2 works in one volume. 1850. Second edition hard back binding in publisher's original chocolate cloth covers which have been rebacked whilst preserving the original cloth, gilt title and author lettering to the spine, blind tooling to the front and rear covers, pale lemon yellow end leaves, untrimmed page edges. 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. With the contemporary binder's ticket of Westley of London adhered to the rear paste-down. Complete with the review leaf before first half-title. This edition was published in December 1850 but the title date of 'a large proportion' of copies was altered to 1851 to render them more suitable for the forthcoming year (see Wise, p. 104). This is evidently a slightly later issue, in Westley's chocolate cloth rather than the 'claret' given by Wise, and with the 16 page publisher's catalogue bound in at the rear dated December 1855. ''This new edition of 'Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey' is a book of very considerable literary importance. Not only does it contain (pp. vii-xvi) Charlotte's 'Biographical Notice' of her two sisters, together with (pp. xvii-xxiv) a Preface to 'Wuthering Heights'; it also includes a series of poems by both Emily and Anne which appeared in its pages for the first time'' (Wise, p.104). The whole now preserved in custom-made blue Solander case with rounded spine, gilt title lettering and cross bands. Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's first and only published novel, written between October 1845 and June 1846, and published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. Emily died the following year, aged 30, the decision to publish it came after the success of her sister Charlotte's novel, Jane Eyre. After Emily's death, Charlotte edited the manuscript of Wuthering Heights, and arranged for it to be published as this posthumous second edition in 1850. Member of the P.B.F.A.

Garfield?s signed copy of ?Latin Prose Composition? with 23-word inscription in the 18-year-old student?s hand with notations ? the book was a gift from the Principal of Geauga Seminary for ?scholarship in the Latin class.?

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below:Book ?A Practical Introduction to Latin Prose Composition? by Thomas Kerchever Arnold. ?Carefully Revised and Corrected by Rev. J.A. Spencer, A.M.? New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1850. 356 pages, 4.75? x 7.25?. Pages foxed. Cloth covers. Upper right portion of spine covering missing, affecting gilt title: ?Arn[old?s] / La[tin] / Composition / Spencer.? Garfield has written, in pencil, on the first blank flyleaf: ?Presented to J.A. Garfield by Spencer J. Fowler ?" as a premium for his scholarship in the Latin class of Geauga Seminary Oct. 1850.? Garfield has written ?No. 19? in the upper right corner and drew a number of loops beneath his inscription. On page 35 he has penciled two Latin words ?moriasis? and ?lundetur? over ?die? and ?praised? respectively. Affixed to the inside cover, opposite the inscription page, is a 2.75? x 1.5? label imprinted ?Inter Folia Fructus / Library of / James A. Garfield.? Good condition in a very fine custom burgundy quarter-leather case with five raised bands and titles in guilt on the spine. On May 8, 1867, James A. Garfield wrote a letter to the Board of Trustees, Geauga Seminary. In part, ?In accordance with your request, I make a brief statement of my connection with Geauga Seminary ... I attended there in the fall of 1849, and during the following winter I taught my first school. Returned to the Seminary in the spring of 1850. Spencer J. Fowler was then principal, and John B. Beech was his chief assistant. I commenced the study of Latin, and finished Algebra and Botany. At the close of the spring term I made my first public speech. It was a six minutes? oration at the annual exhibition...?
