A List of Printed Service Books, according to the ancient uses of the Anglican Church

London: Joseph Masters, 1850. PRINTED ON VELLUM, apparently the only copy thus. 16 leaves. 4to (21.7 x 13.4 cm). Contemporary gilt-panelled vellum binding. Beautiful copy, with blind stamp of previous owner A.J.V. Radford, and bookseller's tickets of Herbert Reichner, Lathrop C. Harper Inc, and H.P. Kraus. Printed on Vellum Following the manuscript tradition, liturgical printing in both the Catholic and Anglican churches frequently employed vellum as well as paper. D.B. Updike writes that economic considerations were also a factor: "As early printed books were nothing more than a mechanical imitation of manuscripts ... even in printed missals vellum was often used for the canon of the Mass, since the pages devoted to this were subject to wear by constant handling" (D.B. Updike, "Some Notes on Liturgical Printing," The Dolphin, no. 2 (1935), pp. 208-16). That being the case, it isn't surprising that this rare bibliography should have a vellum issue; yet no other vellum copy has been recorded.

        Les Cimetieres de Paris

1850. QUAGLIA, [Fernando]. Les Cimetières de Paris. Recueil des plus Remarquables Monuments Funèbres avec leurs Inscriptions. Plus de Dux Cents Monuments Gravés par Collette. [4] pp. Illustrated with 24 double-spread lithographic plates designed by Quaglia and cut on the stones by Collette. Folio, 390 x 290 mm, bound in French nineteenth-century brown cloth spine with red morocco spine label, over brown marbled paper. Paris: Librairie d"Architecture de A. Levy, [ca.1850]. |~||~||~||~| A rare pictorial survey of the remarkable tombs, sepulchres and funeral monuments to be found in the cemeteries of Paris. The lithographs contain up to ten monuments per plate; they were selected not only for the ornament and architectural design features of the monument, but also for the renown of the deceased and/or the distinctive (at times humorous) quality of the epitaph. Fernando Quaglia (1780-1823), an Italian painter of portraits, graphic artist, and sculptor of funeral monuments, was active in the first years of the nineteenth century, connected mainly with the court of the Empress Josephine. His other publication was entitled: Le père Lachaise ou Recueil de dessins des principaux monuments de ce cimetière, Paris 1854. Some occasional spotting throughout. OCLC records only 4 copies in America.

Bound album of 34 drawings (20 by Corbould, 14 by Unwins)

England, 1850. Pen and ink, watercolor, and wash drawings mounted; one signed by Corbould, 3 signed by Unwins. Double-matted and handsomely bound on hinges in full brown morocco. A few drawings show minor foxing, but overall beautifully preserved. Pen and ink, watercolor, and wash drawings mounted; one signed by Corbould, 3 signed by Unwins. The English illustrator HENRY CORBOULD (1787-1844), studied at the Royal Academy (with among others, Fuseli) and he quickly developed a taste for neo-classical historical painting. He soon concentrated "his efforts ? on perfecting a delicate, rather feminine, neo-classical style which suited the purposes of refined Regency book illustration. During the remainder of his career he was 'extensively employed by publishers to make drawings for engravings, and the number of his designs, which adorn many books amount to several hundreds' (J. Britton, The autobiography of ?, 2.172). This is also reflected in those works he continued to send to the Royal Academy exhibition, which were predominantly compositions of a sentimental and literary genre, commissioned to illustrate the novels of Walter Scott or the poetry of Byron and Crabbe. As was the case with J. F. Dove's edition of Fanny Burney's Cecilia, or, Memoirs of an Heiress (1825), many of Corbould's illustrations were turned into steel-engravings by his cousin Charles Heath; in other instances they were reproduced in fashionable media such as lithography and stipple engraving ?" (ODNB).The 20 small Corbould drawings in this album (one of which is signed), are typical of his book work: his portrait of William Shenstone, possibly for Samuel Johnson's LIVES OF THE POETS; the design for the engraved title-page of "THE GRACES, OR LITERARY SOUVENIR ?London | Printed for Hurst and Robinson, 1824"; an illustration for Hugh Kelly's, MEMOIRS OF A MAGDALEN ("Sir Robt Harold coldly endeavouring to console Miss Mildmay | Vol. 1, p. 48"); and numerous illustrations for various adventures and romances, as yet to be identified.Corbould's contemporary, THOMAS UWINS (1782-1857), also was able to enter the Royal Academy Schools, where he exhibited miniature portraits, and contributed illustrations to Rudolf Ackermann's Westminster Abbey (1812), Oxford University (1814), Cambridge University (1815), and Public Schools (1816). Eventually, Uwins evolved to larger forms and while living for several years in Rome, Venice, and Naples, began to paint in larger forms in oil. His illustration work includes Shakespeare, Virgil, Horace, King Arthur and the Round Table, Robinson Crusoe, etc. The 14 exquisite drawings displayed here amply display his skill and mastery of the small, watercolor illustration.

Manuscript Book for The Village Doctor, translated from the French [of The Countess D'Arbouville,] by Anthony North Peat. [Author of, Gossip from Paris during the Second Empire : correspondence (1864-1869) of Anthony B. North Peat, attach? au Cabinet du Ministre de l'int?rieur and, later, attach? au Conseil d'?tat]

No Publisher No Place 1850 - Original ink handwritten Manuscript translation, contained in a quarter leather bound notebook, gilt lettering at spine, raised spine bands, pebbled cloth over boards, approx. 200 pages. Signed by North Anthony Peat at title page and dedication page, dated 1848 at title and 1850 at dedication page. Scarce translation of The Village Doctor, by The Countess D'Arbouville, predating the published English translation in 1853 by Maunsell B. Field. The introduction for Peat's Gossip from Paris during the Second Empire tells us that Peat's letters were sent daily from Paris during the years 1864 to 1870, and that he died from the effects of an accident during the early days of the siege of Paris. The letters were addressed mainly to the readers of the Morning Star, a daily London paper, the organ of the Manchester school of politics, but several appeared elsewhere, notably in The Yorkshire Post. As Attache, Peat saw every morning the telegrams which passed through the Home Office, and thus was enabled to test the accuracy of current reports. The natural objection to a Government Attache being the correspondent of a foreign paper was waived shortly after the correspondence began and were sanctioned by His Excellency, the Marquis de Lavalette. The authorial introduction to the 1853 translation of D'Arbouville's tales states that "The Village Doctor has already been done into English in this country for an Eastern periodical, although he has never happened to see the book in question." This unknown translation was perhaps the present version provided by Peat. There were only fifty copies of the original French version. A Very Good volume, some minor cracking to leather spine spine ends. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

London Bradbury & Evans 1850 - First edition. With 39 illustrations by H. K. Browne 8vo, contemporary three-quarter black-green morocco over marbled boards, very handsomely tooled in gilt on the raised bands of the spine, lettered in gilt in two compartments. xiv, 624. A very handsome copy, quite fine, and with only some mild, unobtusive evidence of age to the covers and with much, much less than the usual toning to the plates. FINE FIRST EDITION. For many lovers of the author's works, DAVID COPPERFIELD ranks as the finest of his writings. "Of all my books," Dickens wrote, "I like this the best; like many fond parents I have my favourite child, and his name is David Copperfield." It is certainly Dickens’ most personal and autobiographical work, especially in the remarkable early chapters describing David’s provincial upbringing and his experiences in the bleak warehouses of London. Abounding in vivid characters such as Uriah Heep, Betsy Trotwood, Mr. Micawber, the Pegottys and Mr. Dick, DAVID COPPERFIELD continues to rank among Dickens’ most popular and critically acclaimed works. In this work, Dickens displays his talents well: "his inordinate gift of observation, his sympathy with the humble, his power over the emotions and his incomparable endowment of unalloyed human fun.It gave what were then universally referred to as ‘the lower orders’ a new sense of self-respect, a new feeling of citizenship. Like the defiance of another Luther, or the Declaration of a new Independence, it emitted a fresh ray of hope across the firmament." [EB] In this way, Dickens’ work is significant on many levels. Joseph Barrois (ca. 1785-1855) was an erudite but eccentric and indeed crooked bibliophile who became fatally involved with the notorious and unpunished book thief Guglielmo Libri, who, in his capacity of inspector of public instruction, traveled throughout France surveying libraries and pillaging them. Barrois is known to have taken in ?"Libri?'s?" manuscripts and had them rendered unrecognizable through rearrangement of quires, rebinding, mutilation, etc. The unsigned binding was confidently attributed by Bernard Breslauer to the Parisian binder Thompson, who assisted Barrois in these fraudulent activities. Barrois also compiled his own valuable manuscript collection, about a tenth stemming from compromised sources (cf. Delisle). Foreseeing Libri?'s conviction, he had the collection discreetly shipped to England in 1849, and sold to the Earl of Ashburnham (cf. Delisle, pp. xl-xlii; most but not all were eventually repurchased by the French government). Convicted in 1850, Libri himself remained comfortably in England, where he was wined and dined by the likes of Panizzi, Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum. In the present work, published the year of Libri?'s conviction, Barrois explores the origins of language in gesture and phonetics, postulating an original universal (Indo-European) language shared by Assyria, India, and China. He traces its roots through cuneiform, hieroglyphics, and classical Greek, and declares the Phoenician digital or finger-alphabet to have been the source of many other writing systems, including Lap, Sanskrit, Chinese, Aztec and other Amerindian languages. The work contains chapters on classical mythology, the mnemonics of Homer, theatrical pantomime in Terence and Vergil, sacred letter symbolism in various religions, and detailed analyses of symbols and letterforms. A 35-page glossary of Greek words concludes the treatise. The lithographs reproduce lapidary inscriptions and relevant details from manuscripts and other works of Antiquity or the Middle Ages found in the Louvre, the museums of Berlin and other largely French collections. Maxime Lalanne, who executed the lithographs, was the author of a manual on etching; he may have been related to the Ludovic Lalanne who worked with Henri Bordier on the commission charged with documenting Libri?'s thefts, a thankless task, honorably fulfilled, which led to Libri?'s conviction in 1850. In the inserted autograph letter, written on vellum, Barrois presents this large-paper copy to the pretender to the title of Henri V (?"whose unfortunate insistence upon his divine rights and upon the scrapping of the Tricolore in favour of the white standard of the Bourbons probably cost him the throne... ?"- Breslauer, BBB), having had it regally attired in a sumptuous neo-fanfare binding, probably by Thompson, a Parisian binder of English origin who signed very few of his bindings. The technically impeccable gold-tooling may have been the work of Thompson?'s finisher Marius Michel père. Ramsden notes that Thompson?'s ?"passion for book-collecting is said to have dissipated his earnings as a binder.?"         Autograph letter signed.

No place, 7. IV. 1850.. 4to. 1 p.. In French: "I am nothing but an honest man, and among humanity, I have no other passion than Justice and Truth. I am with those who suffer, with those who love, with those who work. I am filled with disgust with all forms of tyranny and I have only one wish in the world: to do away with weapons and chains. Your letter, so noble and painful touched my heart deeply. If I had to be rewarded, your thanks will reward me beyond the little I ve done and the little I am worth. Tell the one you love, and whose absence causes you to suffer, that I hold out to him a fraternal hand. Alas, why, in our France, there still are prisons and chains! Please receive, Madame, my deepest respect". - Mounting remnants on verso.

View of New Orleans Early Nineteenth Century

[New York 1850 - Steel printing plate (7 1/16 x 9 3/4 inches), with engraved image (5 3/16 x 8 1/8 inches), above lettered title 'View of New Orleans Early Nineteenth Century' with no engraver or publisher's name. A fascinating example of an original printing plate engraved with a wonderful view of early-nineteenth century New Orleans from the Mississippi The present image shows Jackson Square in New Orleans in its ante-bellum heyday, viewed from the Mississippi. A number of ships ply to and fro, including an early example of a paddle-boat powered by steam. The phrase 'early nineteenth century' suggests that the plate should be dated to at least the middle of the century. A 'circa 1850' date seems likely as steel-engraving as a method of illustration for topographical works was already on the wane by the late 1850s.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Charles Darwin").

Down, Farnborough, Kent, 3. III. [1850].. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt mit Siegel und eh. Adresse verso (Faltbrief). 8vo.. Unveröffentlichter Brief an den deutschen Paläontologen und Malakologen Wilhelm Bernhard Rudolf Hadrian Dunker (1809-85) am Polytechnikum in Kassel: "Sir / I hope that you will forgive the very great liberty I take in addressing you. - I have been for some time employed on a monograph on recent & fossil Cirripedia: I applied to my friend Mr. J[ohn] Morris to know to whom I could apply for any fossil specimens from Germany, & he tells me that you of all others are most likely to be willing & able to help a stranger. - Owing to the kindness of Prof. [Johannes] Steenstrup of Copenhagen I have the loan of some Pollicipes Hausmanni (& I know some perfectly accurate drawings & descriptions) & of P. Bronnii & P. carinatus of [Rudolf Amandus] Philippi, but I am most curious to see the species described by [Friedrich Adolph] Roemer, viz. P. uncinatus, gracilis, glaber, asper, &c. &c. &c.; or any undescribed specimens. - Can you aid me with regard to Roemer's species? I would carefully return them, & pay carriage both ways, as fas as may be possible. - As my name will probably be unknown to you, I may mention, as a proof that I am devoted to Natural History, that I went as Naturalist in the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle round the World & collected in all branches of Nat. History. I trust to your kindness to forgive my intruding myself on you, & beg to remain, with much respect / Sir / Your faithful servant / Charles Darwin / Any parcel ought to be directed to C. Darwin Esq., 7 Park St., Grosvenor Sq., London". September in London. Darwins "Fossil Cirripedia of Great Britain" erschien im April 1851; im Vorwort dankt Darwin seinen Korrespondenten auf dem Kontinent: "Having applied to Professor W. Dunker, of Cassel, for some of the species described by various German authors, he not only sent me many specimens out of his own collection, but procured from Messrs. Roemer, Koch, and Philippi, other specimens of great value; and to these most distinguished naturalists I beg to return my very sincere thanks." & Koch". - Nicht in The correspondence of Charles Darwin, Bd. 4: 1847-1850 (Cambridge 1988).         Niagara Falls [General View 23 - not titled)

[New York]: [published by Goupil, Vibert & Co.], 1850. . Good. Hand-coloured lithograph, New York & Paris [probably printed in the latter]. 1849-1851. Title ["The Rapids at Niagara" 18] and other description line trimmed off thus the paper size is much smaller than was originally printed. Paper size: 8-3/4 x 12-1/8 inchesImage size: 7-3/8 x 11 inchesCondition: Some light soiling and wear, a couple of old fold lines on the top left side in border, clouds in sky a pinkish colour, otherwise image is very good. The "General View" shows the sweep of the falls as seen from afar, with small figures in the foreground enjoying the sites. A lovely image of the famous falls. Lane, Impressions of Niagara 216. Kollner was a prolific and long-lived Philadelphia artist (he lived until 1908), working with most of the major firms in the city before striking out on his own. He produced a large series of views of American cities between 1848 and 1851, and these views of Niagara are among his works from that period. "At mid-century August Köllner produced an ambitious portfolio of fifty four lithographs, entitled Views of American Cities, which included eight images of the Niagara River. Though small in size, these lovely prints were of finer quality than the mass-produced popular lithographs. Whether sold as a set in the portfolio or as separate prints, they would have appealed to those who wanted top quality works of art" - Lane.
