The majority are accompanied by hand-written descriptive labels, including a few with extended notes (in one case extending to several pages). They are, for the most part, well preserved and attractively mounted. Folio (46 x 31 cm); 70 specimen sheets, mostly double-size and folded to protect the specimens. Preserved in four heavy gray paper fasicles; occasional damage to some of the more fragile specimens, but generally well preserved.

Autograph letter signed to Mr. Lloyd(?)

1850. Lyell, Charles (1797-1875). Autograph letter signed to Mr. Lloyd [i.e., F. Lloyds(?)]. 2pp. on one sheet. N.p., n.d. [1850 or after]. 180 x 111 mm. Margins of letter trimmed with small piece cut from upper corner (not affecting text), light soiling, but very good. In the 1850s Lyell, who had become famous for his groundbreaking Principles of Geology (1830-32), gave several lectures on geology at the Royal Institution. In the letter we are offering, Lyell writes about his need for a scene-painter to illustrate one of his lectures: "Mr. Gordon of the Princesses Theatre was recommended to me by Mr. Kean when I wanted a drawing done on a large scale in scene-painting style for a lecture which I gave at the Royal Institution. He executed the task very well & expeditiously. "I called at the Princesses Theatre this morning & found that Mr. Gordon is gone to Birmingham for a month?"whereas I require some one?s assistance without delay. It is not a laborious undertaking & I write to know whether you have any time at your disposal & whether if so you could do me the favour of calling here tomorrow or Monday . . ." Lyell here refers to the Shakespearean actor Charles Kean (1811-68), who had taken over the management of the Princess?s Theatre in 1850. W. Gordon and F. Lloyds are both listed as scene-painters in Kean?s 1857 edition of The Tempest; it is likely that Lyell was writing to the latter, but erroneously remembered his name as ?Lloyd.?         [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM MARTIN TUFTS TO A FRIEND IN GEORGIA, RELATING PRICES AND FINANCIAL CONDITIONS IN GOLD RUSH SAN FRANCISCO, AS WELL AS PROSPECTS FOR GAIN IN THE GOLD MINES]

San Francisco. March 28, 1850.. [3]pp. on a folded folio sheet. Letter soiled and stained. Strengthened with tissue at center fold, tissue repairs to a few small holes, other small holes not repaired. Overall, still quite readable and in good condition overall. In a half morocco and cloth folding case, spine gilt. A nice Gold Rush letter written to a friend back home, seeking to disabuse him of notions of quick riches or plentiful jobs in California. Martin Tufts appears to have been a Georgia native who served during the Mexican- American War. His letter, written relatively early in the Gold Rush period, is full of caution about prospects in California. He begins by describing the situation for non-mining work in San Francisco and in the gold regions: "You can tell your friends that it is very difficult to obtain a situation here of any kind on account of the innumerable quantity of clerks and young men capable of all kinds of business who have made their way into this country. You can form no estimate of the number of young men who are here out of employment & how they get along is a mystery to me. They do not know what hard work is and consequently get disgusted with the mines and venture here to find employment. They pay very good salaries here as an instance some of the river boats pay $500 per month for a clerk, but every one cannot obtain these situations as there is but few of them. I am after one but I am fearful will not get it." Tufts goes on to write that prices for goods such as flour and timber can be high on occasion, but that recent shipments of both from South America have caused a severe price deflation. He hopes to hear about his application for a clerkship soon, but if not, "off for the mountains to cheat some Indians of a little gold dust." He continues "As for the mines I know that there are quantities of gold but there is a very small average, one seldom makes more than ordinary wages. Sometimes a man is fortunate and makes a pretty fortune in a short while but I can assure you it is not general notwithstanding the tremendous stories which are published. I believe if a man will make up his mind to save his money he can go into the mines and work faithfully and in a few years will gather a very pretty sum, but it is a dog's live [sic] and very hard work; if I go into the mines again I will hire Indians and trade, money has been made by working Indians, but they are a lazy lot."

Album of mid-nineteenth century watercolours, bearing woodblock titlling stamp 'Chinese House Ornaments'.

Canton: circa, 1850. Album containing 12 original watercolour plates on pith paper, each measuring 240 x 160 mm., tipped in with blue silk borders; bound in original silk-covered boards with yellow ties; two plates a little chipped (images unaffected) but overall in very good condition and preserved in a bookform case. The sheltered world of the literati. A remarkable album of original watercolours celebrating the life-world of the literati. The album forms an intriguing catalogue of traditional Chinese scholarly objects; including Buddhist statues, vases, wrist-rests, musical instruments, scholar-stones, handscrolls, miniature ornamental trees and tray landscapes. While similar albums of watercolours illustrating costumes, punishments, trades and natural beauties are sometimes encountered, such an album dedicated to objects of scholarship and meditation is a rare and special find. In Confucian philosophy the literati enjoyed a highly esteemed role, cultivating detachment from the day-to-day bustle of worldly affairs to achieve sanguine and lucid intellectual insight. This album lovingly captures the material world and cherished objects of classical Chinese scholarship, and so offers a rare insight into bygone way of life.

OLIVER TWIST (Near Fine Example of the First "Cheap" Edition in Original Cloth)

London: Chapman & Hall, 1850. Dickens, Charles. OLIVER TWIST. Frontispiece by George Cruikshank. London: Chapman & Hall, 1850. Original blind-stamped green publisher's cloth with spines elaborately decorated in gilt. First "Cheap" Edition (actually volume 6 of the first and most important collected works of Dickens, with a new 4pp introduction by Dickens and a specially commissioned new frontispiece). Begun in 1847 with writings already published, Dickens added further titles to his "works" as he went along. Despite being called "cheap" -- these volumes are just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 17 volumes and 18 titles in total, we've never seen a complete set in fine original condition and individual volumes in collector's condition are scarce. A remarkably FINE copy of this surprising scarce edition in original cloth, spine a trifle browned (as almost always with this olive-green cloth), a few pages slightly foxed, minor wear to the extremities, bright gilt, and excellent eye appeal. First Edition Thus. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine. Illus. by George Cruikshank.

Naval Tactics and Trials of Sailing; illustrated by Diagrams of Several Evolutions. To which are added, the Established Plan of Lights for Steam-Vessels, and Regulations to avoid Collision.

London: Charles Wilson, (Late J.W. Norie & Wilson,) at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy, 1850 - Quarto. Original blue-green cloth, title gilt to the spine, and to the front board together with a large block of a three-master delivering a broadside, elaborate panels in blind to both boards and to the spine compartments, edges sprinkled brown, cream surface-paper endpapers, binder's ink stamp of Lewis & Sons to the front pastedown. A little rubbed, front board a touch sunned and mottled, corners softened, head and tail of spine crumpled, light browning, a very good copy. Frontispiece of HMS St. Vincent and 5 other plates, one folding, numerous diagrams of manoeuvres to the text, dispositions coloured by hand, folding table, ?celluloid protractor remains in the slit-pocket to the front pastedown. First edition. This copy from the library of the earl of Ellenborough with heirloom stamp to the front pastedown. Sir George Biddlecombe, (1807–1878), naval officer and hydrographer, joined the merchant navy at the age of 16, "he was an officer in the East India Company's navy in 1825–8. Passing as a second master in the Royal Navy in May 1828, he was soon after employed in surveying in the Aetna and the Blonde until 1833. He was on active service in various ships from 1833 until 1854, and was known for his skill in naval surveys in many parts of the world. While in the Actaeon, in 1836, he surveyed a group of islands discovered by her in the Pacific. When attached to the Talbot, 1838–42, he surveyed numerous anchorages on the Ionian station, in the Greek archipelago, and up the Dardanelles and Bosphorus; he examined the south shore of the Black Sea as far as Trebizond, as well as the port of Varna in eastern Bulgaria, and prepared a survey, published by the Admiralty, of the bays and banks of Acre. He also displayed much skill and perseverance in surveying the Skerki shoals in the Mediterranean where he discovered many unknown patches" (ODNB). As Master of the Baltic with Napier - who features on the impressive four-page subscriber's list - on the St. Vincent, he reconnoitred the southern parts of the Åland Islands, Hango Bay, Baro Sound, and the anchorage of Sveaborg, before conducting the fleet there. He piloted the allied fleets to Kronstadt during the Crimean War, and took the steamer Prince, with upwards of 2000 French troops on board, to Bomarsund, being present at the fall of the fortress. He was subsequently attendant of shipyards in Devonport and Woolwich. On the title page Biddlecombe is described as "of Her Majesty's Yacht Victoria and Albert", and it is from there that he addresses the two-page presentation letter to Ellenborough which is loosely inserted into this copy: "Feeling that Your Lordship takes a deep interest in the Naval Service - I beg leave to submit this copy for your Lordships acceptance", reminiscing that "it was when your Lordship was head of the Navy, that I received my first appointment to the Squadron of Evolution which afforded me the opportunity of gaining more knowledge of that particular part of my duty which enabled me to produce this work". Ellenborough was very briefly First Lord of the Admiralty. Uncommon, just 7 copies on Copac, this a particularly nice copy in the cloth, complete with the protractor, and with a suitable naval provenance. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

French herbarium with 29 plants collected in Australia and the Pacific in the 1840s, including a waratah personally gathered by Jules Verreaux

Prepared in Australia and France, 1850. A collection of herbarium sheets, most approx. 420 x 270 mm., many with original manuscript labels and most in blue paper covers; very good. Including a waratah collected in the Southern Highlands in 1845. Remarkable Colonial herbarium of 29 plants collected in Australia and the Pacific for the Comte Hippolyte Jaubert (1798-1874), a wealthy industrialist and amateur botanist who was able to indulge his passion for exotic and newly described plants. Jaubert's collection was recently discovered in the south of France, and provides a remarkable snapshot of the practicalities of early exotic botany: not least, it is fascinating to see evidence of the important role played by the Maison Verreaux, founded in 1803 and one of the foremost suppliers of natural history specimens in this golden age of collecting. This collection is not only a rare survival, but a very beautiful and significant one as well.Without doubt the highlight of the collection is a magnificent mounted specimen of a Sydney waratah in marvellous original condition, collected in Australia by the French natural history dealer Jules Verreaux in 1845. The label on Verreaux's distinctive blue paper reads: "Telopea speciosissim. 433, alentours de sydney, Australie, Août 1845. M. Verreaux." The Maison Verreaux financed its own expeditions to collect exotic botany, notably to Australia and South Africa. In the 1830s the business passed into the hands of the three brothers Jules-Pierre, Jean Baptiste Édouard and Alexis, and it was Jules (1807-1873) who was the great traveller: in 1842 he travelled to Australia and Tasmania with the backing of the Muséum national du histoire naturelle, and remained there until 1847, including a fifteen-month sojourn in Tasmania where he made a particular study of the platypus. The Verreaux brothers collected great quantities of such material, but apart from occasional specimens known in major public collections, surviving examples are almost unknown on the market.Other plants are from across the region, notably New Zealand and New Caledonia, but from further afield as well. There are some particularly beautiful Grevillea and the rainforest shrub Lomatia, but all are remarkable for the quality of the mounting and the good condition of the specimens. Many are in the original dark blue paper wrappers provided by Jaubert.A detailed listing is available on request.

Passeggiata in Europa ovvero Storia Viaggi e Costumi. Alla Gioventii. Con Figure

Torino: Fratelli Reycend, 1850. Soft cover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. (1) ff, 240 pp, with engraved title page, frontispiece, and 7 further acqua-forte engraved plates. Bound in original publisher's printed brown wrappers, minor damage to spine, clean and fresh, and excellent and very genuine copy. With stamps (likely a bookseller's) to head of cover and title page, 'Rodi-Ferrario'. Very rare first and only edition of this travel guide to Europe, written, as the title suggests, for young readers in a pocket 12mo format. The guide moves from tours of Italy and Switzerland all the way to Poland, Lithuania, and Turkey, as well as Great Britain, providing 8 engraved plates of national costumes along the way. The charming illustrations depict: a young woman of 'Batz' (Bath); a woman of Civita-Vechia, Romagna; a citizen of Seville; a young woman of Gaeta, Two Sicilies; a boatman from Le Havre, a woman of Oberhash (Switzerland); the Vizier of Constantinople; and finally a female Athenian. The commentary passes from the historical to contemporary details of travel between major destinations, and occasional remarks of art-historical interest. Florence is noted to contain (in the same breath) the sepulcres of Galileo, Aretino, Machiavelli, and Alfieri, the latter having been sculpted by Canova (p 72). England, Scotland and Ireland are noted very much in passing: although the empire stretches 'to the Ganges', the islands themselves are accorded little interest. The guide does mention "the reknown of the univeristy of Oxford, the most learned in England" with no mention, however, of its more easterly counterpart. * ICCU 1175063; unrecorded on OCLC.
