Narrative of the Wreck of the "Favorite" on the Island of Desolation: Detailing the Adventures, Sufferings and Privations of John Nunn; an Historical Account of the Island, and Its Whale and Seal Fisheries: With a Chart and Numerous Wood Engravings.

London: William Edward Painter, 1850 A very good copy of the scarce 1st edition account of the shipwreck of John Nunn and others for 2 years on the 'Island of Desolation' - or Kerguelen Land. John Nunn was the real life model for Robinson Crusoe. This copy is complete with the rare folding chart of the islands and is profusely illustrated with images of the sailors, and wild life. Much detail on whale and seal hunting. It is in the original blue decorative cloth binding with blind stamped decoration to boards. It has had an expert cloth case repair to reback the spine so it is sound and tight. There is a small piece missing from the original spine at the top, so the gilt titles are not complete, but the gilt illustration of the Favorite is present. Internally, the original endpapers are present, having been repaired - there are a couple of small dark marks to the top edge of the rear endpapers. Contents generally clean and bright - there is the odd mark or spot. The folding chart is clean and bright with a very small tear (1 cm) where it is attached to the book. With the original note to subscribers tipped in.

Consequences of a Successfull French Invasion.

      J. Gillray, nd., c., London 1850 - Engraving, 370 x 270 mm., handcoloured as issued; framed. A famous, satirical look at the decision of the English parliament to create a penal settlement at Botany Bay, in contrast to the atmosphere of reform and concern with civil liberties in the newly created republic of France and in the American colonies. This cartoon was first published in 1798; it was reissued in the mid nineteenth century as offered here.James Gillray turns the tables on the politicians of the House of Commons responsible for the Botany Bay decision: French revolutionaries led by Napoleon storm the parliament gagging the Speaker and placing all the Members in chains and dressing them in the garb of convicts. All the symbols of House are destroyed: the mace is smashed, the statutes discarded on the floor, and below the Speaker's chair are the words, "The House is adjourned to Botany Bay".This is the significantly later impression of the print, first issued at the close of the eighteenth century, circa 1798.

Lake Como [and:] Lake Maggiore

Italy, 1850. Pair of views, gouache over faint etched line, black gouache border. Period gilt and faux bois frames. Two splendid, panoramic views of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore Catering to the foreigners flocking to the region on The Grand Tour, this pair of hand-painted prints beautifully depict the famed, picturesque lakes, with rich bands of blue highlighting the water and sky, with the surrounding hills and mountains dotted with luxurious villas. In the view of Lake Maggiore, we see from a very high vantage point the Borromean Islands: Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori, with their extraordinary gardens. The view of Lake Como looks north up the lake towards Switzerland from above Bellagio, which occupies the point at which the lake divides in two. The paintings are clearly intended as a pair, the images being almost identical in size with matching black painted margins. Contemporary brown half morocco over blue cord-grained cloth, upper cover titled in gilt "Souvenirs / d'Egypte", spine in seven compartments with semi-raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with simple repeat decoration in gilt, cream/orange glazed endpapers A spectacular and rare album featuring the work of two important French Orientalist artists. The twenty four uniformly excellent plates include twelve topographical views after Barbot of Egyptian sights and cities from Philae to Cairo, ancient and modern, all peopled and bustling with life. Alexandre Bida's contribution consists of twelve beautifully-observed character studies of the people he encountered in the region: an Albanian, a Copt, dancers, ladies, a donkey driver, a groom, etc. Bida, studied under Eugene Delacroix, and travelled extensively through Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Palestine. "E. Barbot" is Prosper Barbot (1798-1878), a pupil of Jules Coignet and Louis Watelet, who made two journeys to Egypt in 1844 and 1846 travelling from Cairo south across the desert. Colas I.326; Chadenat 761 ("Tres belle album non mis dans le commerce."); Lipperheide I, Ma32.

Much detail to each map shows the name of the Daimyo Loyal Retainers, their Mon, name of the street, location of rivers, canals, bridges, directional compass, temples, shrines, special gardens, flower locations, fire stations, with a color coded key to the above and also stores, roads, rivers and other geographical features. * There is also a colophon on each map, showing date of publication, author or compiler, location of the publisher and address. *** An excellent example of the complex and grand city of Edo during the late Edo period [prior to 1868]. Each individual map is a cartographic treasure. With all of the usual features found in larger and earlier maps. *** REFERENCE: HAMADA, Giichiro. comp. EDO KIRI E ZU: ILLUSTRATED SECTIONAL MAPS OF EDO. 2 volume set. These maps are found & listed in both vol. 1 and 2 of this set. We have elected to follow the numbering found in volume one, which shows some 31 maps in all. There has always been a variation as to the exact count of the sections of old Edo, and this work shows both versions and lists each section's name. The list in volume 1 seems to best suit the group of sectional maps we have. * [KONDO Gennichi.]: MEIJI TOKYO KUBUN CHIZU ZEN: Tokyo Daishoo Kubun Chizu & Tokyo Jyuugo Kubun Chizu: COMPLETE MEIJI TOKYO WARDS [KU]:LARGE & SMALL WARDS & THE FIFTEEN WARDS OF TOKYO. * EDO KIRI MAPS: https://books.google.com/books?id=eYuojP7kgvkC&pg=PA3&lpg=PA 3&dq=EDO+KIRI+MAP+NAMES&source=bl&ots=r3MkvkDGOT&sig=3Q5PE4s SpuYcmEsbNPqL50n9-tg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=F0NbVfzfGcfTsAXeuIGgBg&ve d=0CBQQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=EDO%20KIRI%20MAP%20NAMES&f=false *** Color scans can be sent by email. This type of maps quite beautifully done and is remarkably handsome. * CONDITION/VARIANTS: An exceptionally clean example of this quite SCARCE map. The meridians and numbers are clearly located. * RARITY: Japanese world maps are quite rare, and the double hemispheric format is by and large the rarest and most desirable type. A handsome and quite RARE World Map, suitable for framing & display. * Japan was very late in world mapping, and this map is considered "early" in Japanese world cartography. A rare copy of the earlier Kurihara world map projection. Beautifully executed in woodblock printing using pastel colors, with decorated border cartouche that shows mythological animals in the pattern. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: T. Oda: THE WORLD IN JAPANESE MAPS UNTIL THE MID-19TH CENTURY, pp.232-3, plate # 107. Oda cites & illustrates the ca. 1850 edition, per his text p.75, where he cites the 1835 & 1838 editions. Ours shows a slight variance to his, but is clearly the same map. * Color scans can be sent by email.         [Antigua] Original watercolour drawing, inscribed 'Entrance into / English Harbour / Antigua / taken from / Fort Charlotte / 4 July 1850"

Antigua, West Indies, 1850. Watercolour on paper, inscribed lower left. Sheet size: 9 7/8 x 13 3/4 inches. A beautiful and historically important image of the entrance to English Harbour (looking inland with a glimpse of Falmouth Harbour beyond) viewed from Fort Charlotte. According to William R. O'Byrne's A naval biographical dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. From 1842 he served as Admiralty Agent on board a 'contract Mail steam-vessel'. He evidently travelled widely: the National Maritime Museum in London hold two of his West Indian drawings, the National Library of Australia a watercolour of a scene in Panama, and a collection of his drawings of the Far East were sold in 1982. As the present drawing shows he was clearly gifted, and more than a match for many of the professional artists working at the time. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies' was drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel, and published as a separate print in 1843 (a copy of this print is held in the New York Public Library collection, and is described by Deak). Cf. Deák 525; cf. Martyn Gregory Galley "Lieutenant Walford Thomas Bellairs R.N. ... Admiralty agent and ... artist in the Far East" (London: 1982); cf. Rex Nan Kivell Collection NK10620; cf.         [Grenada] Original signed pencil and wash drawing of The Carenage, St. George's, Grenada

Grenada, West Indies, 1850. Pencil and wash on paper, signed in ink lower right 'W.T. Bellairs R.N.', inscribed in pencil on verso 'Caranage [sic.] Grenada / July 50 / W T. Bellairs' verso. (Pin holes, neat repairs to two tears to lower margins). Sheet size: 6 7/8 x 10 5/8 inches. An important view of the inner harbour of St. George's, Grenada: the name 'Carenage' recalls a time when this calm, protected bay was where wooden ships were periodically 'careened' or beached to allow for the cleaning of barnacles from the hull. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West Indies' was drawn on stone by W.L. Walton, lithographed and hand-coloured by Charles Hullmandel, and published as a separate print in about 1843 (a copy of this print is held in the New York public library collection, and is described by Deak). It was published in a series of large format lithographs Ansichten der Oesterreichischen Monarchie, von den besten Meistern nach der Natur aufgenommen u. gestochen by Josef Bermann in Vienna, around 1850. The lithograph was based on a draft of Franz Xaver Josef Sandmann (1805 in Straßburg - 1856 in Vienna). Sandmann was a German-French landscape painter and lithographer. The view was originally published as toned lithography. This example has been contemporarily hand-coloured with stunnung colours and mounted on a card.
