THE CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN A JEW AND A CHRISTIAN: THE FORMER ANSWERING A CHALLENGE THROWN OUT BY THE LATTER, RESPECTING THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE PROPHECIES PREDICTIVE OF THE ADVENT OF JESUS

New York, Printed for the author, and sold by Isaac & Solomons, 1850. First edition. Period Boards. 8vo. V, 87 pages. 24 cm. Singerman 1149; Rosenbach 675. A collection of hypothetical dialogues between Christians and Jews on various issues, including: ?Have the Jews corrupted their Scripture? ? ? ?Dissimilarity between the Christian Messiah and the one foretold by the Prophets, ? ? ?Jesus a Prophet, ? ? ?Reason of the continued exile of the Jews, ? ? ?Comparison between the Law of Moses and that of Jesus; an abrogation of the former, and practicability of the latter, ? ? ?Reasons of the Jews being so determinedly opposed to Christianity, ? ? ?The general expectation of the Messiah and consequent appearance of so many pretenders about the time when Jesus appeared. ? Selig Newman was a German Hebraist; he "was educated at Posen, but in 1814 went to England and was appointed minister to the Plymouth [Jewish] congregation, teaching Hebrew at the same time at the University of Oxford. His faith debarred him from a professorship, but among his pupils were numbered many distinguished Christian and Jewish scholars. While in London Newman took part in a spirited debate with some Christians on the Messianic prophecies. At an advanced age he sailed for America and settled in New York, gaining a livelihood as teacher and writer. In 1850 he published a work entitled 'The Challenge Accepted, ' consisting of a series of dialogues between a Jew and a Christian respecting the fulfilment of the prophecies on the advent of the Messiah. He published also: 'Emendations of the English Version of the Old Testament, ' 1839; a 'Hebrew and English Lexicon, ' 1841; and a Hebrew grammar, which was much used for elementary instruction among English Jews. SUBJECT (S) : Messiah -- Prophecies. OCLC lists two copies worldwide (American Antiquarian Society, National Library of Israel) . Very good condition in very basic period binding. (AMR-38-2) xx

[A calligrapher's manual for writing the Lanydza (Ranjana) script]. Mongolia, 19th century.

1850. A manuscript giving the alphabet and ligatures of the religious Lanydza (originally Ranjana) script used for special Buddhist texts. Format: 10 x 31 cm. Lvs 9, numbered 1 - 9 in Tibetan. Comprising one "title page",16 pages of text and one page with closing text. Loose as issued within later Oriental silk cloth covered boards. The text is written in rows comprising the alphabet and ligatures of Lanydza in black ink; followed by regular Tibetan script in red ink and the transcription in Mongolian characters in black ink. First and last leaves mounted on old paper with some wear and marginal holes. Frayed at margins and a few leaves with marginal repairs. Tha Ranjana script is one of many alphabets which derived from the Brahmi script. It developed during the 11th century and was used until the mid 20th century in India and Nepal by the Newar people for religious texts. The Tibetans used this script which they call Lanydza when writing original Sanskrit texts and for writing decorative scripts in temples and in the drawings of mandalas. Many manuscripts written in Lanydza were preserved in the old monasteries of Tibet but most of them were destroyed following the Chinese take over. A charming and most unusal specimen.

        3 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Büjükdere, o. J. (um 1850). Zus. 6 S., Kl.-8° u. 8°.

Belliss. antip. inc. in rame. [307]

        Souvenir d'une promenade a Versailles.

Paris: au Bureau des Galeries Historiques de Versailles Folio (36.5 cm; 14.5"). [6] ff., 50 leaves of plates.. [ca. 1850?55] One of several works with the identical title but from different publishers and with different contents! The present volume contains engravings after paintings in the palace's "Galeries Historiques": the engravers include Leroux, Masson, Thomas, Nargoot, Rebel, Frilley, and many others. Curiously, many engravings bear a faint line of identification reading "Diagraphe et Pantographe Gavard" and they have non-sequential numbering, meaning the images from this source could be and were recombined to form a wide variety of souvenir albums. In this copy all plates are guarded by sheets of heavy paper stock. Binding: In the style of a percaline mosaïquée, but the gilt and mosaic are applied to a textured pebbled cloth. Spine gilt extra with added "mosaic" of green, white, red and blue. Front cover with a blind-stamped border incorporating elegant corner-pieces; within this, "Souvenir de Versailles" gilt-stamped in an arc above a large on-laid crowned coat of arms flanked by banners and flags, this embellished in gilt with rich use of blue, white, red, blue, and green. Rear cover with similar blind-stamped border and a different large gilt-stamped center device strikingly incorporating an on-lay of blue stamped in gilt with a military medal. All edges gilt. Binding as above, rubbed to the underlying boards at the corners of the boards and top of spine slightly pulled with one bit of rubbing. Scattered pale brown stains mostly on interleaves and sometimes visible on versos of plates; some discoloration in some margins of plates and occasionally into one; overwhelmingly a clean copy, remarkably bright and unfoxed. A strong and nice example of this category of "souvenir" and of a gilt mosaic binding.

Green, author of GAMBLING UNMASKED! and various other works proporting to tell the truth about various gambling tricks. Green lays out his seven point plan, chief among which is the formation of an Intelligence Office, "by means of which merchants, banking, insurance, and all other public institutions may learn whether persons in their employ, or with whom they have pecuniary dealings, are wasting their substance at the gaming table." He also recommends more pedestrian methods of control, such as providing advice and counsel, and petitioning state governments. Also provides the articles of the association constitution and its by-laws, as well as a list of rules and regulations for the new Intelligence Office. While all editions of this pamphlet are very scarce, this variant, with sixteen pages printed by Brown & Eckler rather than twelve by William S. Dorr, is slightly more so, with only one copy recorded by OCLC at Yale University. OCLC 887139492.
