Two Watercolour views of Niagara Falls (untitled)

1850 - TWO EARLY AND UNUSUAL PERSPECTIVES OF NIAGARA FALLS A beautiful pair of mid nineteenth century Niagara Falls watercolour views by a renowned British/Canadian landscape artist who documented in watercolours, a number in the Hamilton and Niagara area. Both trimmed to image, each 30 x 43.5 cm (12 x 17 inches), unframed. Both unsigned, common for John Caddy watercolours (as quoted in DCB). #1) American Falls View. [Left view] View with the bridge and house on the island and walkway down is on the left side of Goat Island showing the USA side. Possibly the view of the American Falls would have been taken from somewhere at the top of the hill above Queen Victoria Park, somewhere around Clark Ave or Robinson Street? It's definitely above the level of the River Road, where the notorious "Front" was located. Laid on paper, possible very light fading. Very good condition. #2) Canadian Falls View. [Right view] View from Goat Island and the tower maybe looking to the Canadian side but not showing table rock. The view of the Horseshoe was probably (again) from the top of the hill, at Murray Street (ie, near the site of the Skylon Tower.) The higher elevation at the top of the hill, and the underbrush, hides the Table Rock not portrayed in this view. Laid on canvas, possible light fading. Very good condition Captain John Herbert Caddy (1801-1883) was a painter, draftsman, illustrator and educator. Captain John Herbert Caddy was also a career soldier, civil engineer and explorer. He exhibited with the Upper Canada Provincial Exhibition from 1858 to 1868 and his works are in several Canadian museums including the National Gallery of Canada. Caddy was born in Quebec in 1801 into a family of military engineers. His grandfather had been sent to Newfoundland in the 18th century to build a fort. Caddy was sent to England for his education before returning to Canada. Caddy was a painstaking artist who worked slowly and carefully from pencil sketches made on the scene, through sepia drafts, to the finished picture. Apparently he sometimes completed several versions of the finished landscape but rarely, if ever, signed his work. He exhibited watercolours and oils in the annual provincial exhibitions from 1858 to 1868, winning awards for his meticulous landscapes, marines, and animal and flower studies. Quoted from Dictionary of Canadian Biography (DCB) online. [Attributes: First Edition]

SMITH'S ILLUSTRATED ASTRONOMY, DESIGNED FOR THE USE OF THE PUBLIC OR COMMON SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES. Illustrated with Numerous Original Diagrams. By Asa Smith, Principal of Public School No. 12, City of New York.

New York: Cady & Burgess, 1850. - ILLUSTRATED WITH 36 WOOD ENGRAVINGS ON 28 PLATES - Quarto, 12 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide. Pictorial buff boards backed with a black calf spine, titled in black on the front cover above a superb wood engraved illustration portraying astronomers performing observations with "The 2d Telescope in Size in the United States, at the Cincinnati Observator[y]". There is an advertisement for the publisher's "Popular and Valuable School Books", printed in 2 columns on the rear cover. The covers are rubbed, bumped and stained with wear to the edges and corners. The pagination is as follows: [4], pages 1-27 and 30-68. Pages 28/29 are skipped in the numbering, the book collating as complete as per the index and following the 1848 copy at Princeton University. Illustrated with a frontispiece duplicating the cover illustration and with 36 wood engravings on 28 plates plus a textual illustration on page 61. There is partial hand- coloring to the illustrations on pages 7 and 32, possibly as published. The hinges are cracked and there are ink stains to the rear endpaper and pastedown and to the top of the last page. An early owner's inscription has been largely erased from the front endpaper. There is a short tear to the front edge of the frontispiece and there is some marginal foxing. A good complete copy of this rare book. The fifth edition. The text comprises fifty-four lessons on astronomy in catechism form by Asa Smith, the principal of a New York Public School, and "An Explanation of Leap Year", "Equation of Time", "Problems on the Terrestrial Globe", "Problems on the Celestial Globe" and a "Glossary or Explanation of Astronomical Terms". Complete as per the indexes of both the text and of the plates. In addition, the book collates with the 1848 edition in the Princeton University collection."It has been the object of the author of this little manual of Astronomical science, to present all the distinguishing principles in physical Astronomy with as few words as possible; but with such ocular demonstrations, by way of diagrams and maps, as shall make the subject easily understood. . The Diagrams, which are larger and more full than those of any other wok adapted to common schools, are many of them original in their design, and exhibit the positions and phases of the planets in their orbits. The drawings being upon the principle of perspective, exhibit the inclinations of their several axes to the planes of their orbits more correctly than has hitherto been done in any other popular work." [Quoted from the Preface].Asa Smith undertook the task of creating and drawing each print on wood. The images were then engraved into the wood for printing. It's not surprising that Smith further writes, in his Preface, that "it has occupied the whole of his spare time for nearly three years; the most laborious part of it being the drawing of the diagrams, &c. on wood, ready for the tool of the engraver, which was done by the Author himself."The superb wood engravings include the frontispiece which portrays "The Largest Telescopes in the World". The other wood engravings consist of illustrations of the "Orrery, with a view of the Solar System in the back ground", the "Solar System and Comparative Magnitudes", "Centripetal and Centrifugal force", "Kepler's Laws", "The Mean and True Place of a Planet", "Circle; Ellipse; Concentric Circles; Circles not in the same plane", "Cut Section of the Sun", "Spots on the Sun", "Transits to the year 1900", "Signs of the Zodiac", "Mercury and Venus; Telescopic Views; Venus Morning and Evening Star", "Earth and Definitions", "Seasons; Summer and Winter Rays, Equinoctial and Solstitial Points", "Mars and Jupiter; Telescopic Views", "Saturn; Saturn's Rings and Moons", "Herschel and Leverrier", "Phases of the Moon; Apparent Magnitude of the Sun and Moon", "Telescopic View of the New Moon", "Telescopic View of the Full Moon", "Telescopic View of the Old Moon", "Eclipses", "Moon's Nodes; Inferior and Superior Conjunction" [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Paris, chez Delalain Fils, Floréal An XI (1803). JOINT: 2).

1). Caillet, II, 306 (pour le second tirage). 2). Duveen, p. 306. 3 exemplaires au N.U.C. 3). Wheleer Gift Catalogue, 664. 4). Manque au N.U.C. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A fine collection of Saint's Cards, each with moveable flower emblem.

Einsiedeln: Charles and Nicholas Benziger; Prague: I.F. Marouschek, J. Pashmeyer; Ufer: N. Kremplsetzer, [ca, 1850]. - 66 fine lithographed cards with original hand-colour (ca 4 x 3 inches), tipped-in to loose sheets (10 x 13 4/8 inches) preserved in a tan cloth clamshell box. Provenance: the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, their sale 21st November 1986, lot 122 A Superb collection of finely lithographed and hand-coloured cards, each depicting a particular saint concealed beneath an exquisite moveable flower emblem, the common and scientific name of the flower, the name of the saint, and a passage from scripture are all printed in German either above or below the image. While most of the cards were printed in Prague (44), 4 were issued by the esteemed firm of Benziger in Einsiedeln, 2 by N. Kremplsetzer in Ufer, one by W. Hoffman, and another 17 without imprint. Charles and Nicholas Benziger succeeded their father in his small publishing business in the Swiss mountain village of Einsiedeln in 1833, and "began the lithographing of religious pictures, as well as the coloring of them by hand, before the introduction of chromolithography. Charles Benziger, (1799 - 1873), a man of unusual strength and energy with a good classical education, devoted himself especially to the literary end of the business. In 1840 the "Einsiedler Kalender" was founded; it is still published and furnishes an interesting illustration of the development of the art of printing. Nicholas Benziger (1808 - 1864), took charge of the technical part of the business, proved himself a pioneer, introducing to the mountain village of Einsiedeln a series of improved trades methods as they appeared from time to time in the great centres of Europe and America. Under his guidance the work of book-binding, which was formerly carried on in the family at home, was systematized. In 1844 the old hand-press was superseded by the first power press. Stereotyping was introduced in 1846; in 1856 steel and copper printing; and in 1858 electrotyping. In 1853, a house was opened in New York" (Catholic Encyclopedia online). From the distinguished library of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, originally dedicated in 1961 as the Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt Botanical Library, an international center for bibliographical research and service in the interests of botany and horticulture, as well as a center for the study of all aspects of the history of the plant sciences. By 1971 the Hunt Botanical Library's activities had so diversified that the name was changed to Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. C [Attributes: Hard Cover]

GOLD SCALE In ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER'S WOODEN CASE, Circa 1850. E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra. William Street, 73. New York

New York: E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra, (n. d.). Circa 1850. Wooden case with a hinged lid and hook clasps, seller's label to inside of lid. Interior has carved compartments for the brass scale and weights, including a small compartment for grain weights with a hinged lid. Light general wear to case and weights, brass balances a bit tarnished. Only contains the three grain weights, so perhaps others missing? VG overall.. Suspension gold scale made of brass, with troy and grain weights. Troy weights nested, ranging from 1/16 to 4 oz; grain weights include 2, 6, and 10. Case: 1-11/16" x 6-11/16" x 3-1/8". Scale, when hanging: ~8-1/4" x 7-1/8", brass balances 2-1/2" in diameter. In 1850, the New York firm of E. Fabreguettes, Fils & Morra, importers of French fancy goods, attempted to capitalize on the California Gold Rush by adding gold scales to their wares. Notices in several of the city's papers in late October and early November of that year, including the Monday, November 4th edition of The Evening Post, advertised the following: "GOLD SCALES. || The subscribers offer for sale the best and most approved pattern of French Standard Gold Scales, adjusted exactly to the United States Mint Standard, of every size and weight. || These scales are so made that they take but very little compass when packed, and are much more neatly and conveniently finished, than either the English, German, or American article. As we have all that are made of this pattern, parties having orders for shipment to California, are solicited to examine them before purchasing elsewhere. Also for sale, a variety of French fancy goods, accordeons [sic], &c. || E. Fabreguettes, Fils & Morra, 73 William Street, (up stairs.)." E. Fabreguettes, Fils & Morra was located at 61 Maiden Lane until at least 1847, moving to their William Street address in 1848 or 1849. No later advertisements for these scales appear to have been issued in New York newspapers, leading us to conjecture that the firm's venture into the gold mining market was perhaps not particularly successful. It is, of course, impossible to say with any certainty if this particular scale was originally used during the Gold Rush, though this one here offered was purchased in California, giving rise to possibility it may very well have been. In either case, a nice artifact from the California Gold Rush era.
