Belliss. antip. inc. in rame. [307]

        Souvenir d'une promenade a Versailles.

Paris: au Bureau des Galeries Historiques de Versailles Folio (36.5 cm; 14.5"). [6] ff., 50 leaves of plates.. [ca. 1850?55] One of several works with the identical title but from different publishers and with different contents! The present volume contains engravings after paintings in the palace's "Galeries Historiques": the engravers include Leroux, Masson, Thomas, Nargoot, Rebel, Frilley, and many others. Curiously, many engravings bear a faint line of identification reading "Diagraphe et Pantographe Gavard" and they have non-sequential numbering, meaning the images from this source could be and were recombined to form a wide variety of souvenir albums. In this copy all plates are guarded by sheets of heavy paper stock. Binding: In the style of a percaline mosaïquée, but the gilt and mosaic are applied to a textured pebbled cloth. Spine gilt extra with added "mosaic" of green, white, red and blue. Front cover with a blind-stamped border incorporating elegant corner-pieces; within this, "Souvenir de Versailles" gilt-stamped in an arc above a large on-laid crowned coat of arms flanked by banners and flags, this embellished in gilt with rich use of blue, white, red, blue, and green. Rear cover with similar blind-stamped border and a different large gilt-stamped center device strikingly incorporating an on-lay of blue stamped in gilt with a military medal. All edges gilt. Binding as above, rubbed to the underlying boards at the corners of the boards and top of spine slightly pulled with one bit of rubbing. Scattered pale brown stains mostly on interleaves and sometimes visible on versos of plates; some discoloration in some margins of plates and occasionally into one; overwhelmingly a clean copy, remarkably bright and unfoxed. A strong and nice example of this category of "souvenir" and of a gilt mosaic binding.

CONSTITUTION AND BYE-LAWS OF THE NEW YORK ASSOCIATION FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF GAMBLING [caption title]

New York: Brown & Eckler, 1850. 16pp. Dbd. Edges sprinkled. Very light scattered foxing. Very good plus. A extremely rare anti-gambling tract and charter for a new New York anti-gambling society. It contains a mission statement from the reformed gambler and now "General Executive Agent and Corresponding Secretary of the New York Association for the Suppression of Gambling," Jonathan H. Green, author of GAMBLING UNMASKED! and various other works proporting to tell the truth about various gambling tricks. Green lays out his seven point plan, chief among which is the formation of an Intelligence Office, "by means of which merchants, banking, insurance, and all other public institutions may learn whether persons in their employ, or with whom they have pecuniary dealings, are wasting their substance at the gaming table." He also recommends more pedestrian methods of control, such as providing advice and counsel, and petitioning state governments. Also provides the articles of the association constitution and its by-laws, as well as a list of rules and regulations for the new Intelligence Office. While all editions of this pamphlet are very scarce, this variant, with sixteen pages printed by Brown & Eckler rather than twelve by William S. Dorr, is slightly more so, with only one copy recorded by OCLC at Yale University. OCLC 887139492.

A System of Aeronautics, Comprehending Its Earliest Investigation, and Modern Practice and Art.

Joseph A. Speel, Philadelphia 1850 - John Wise (1808-1879) was the first American aeronaut of significance. His first balloon ascention was in 1835. In total he made 462 ascensions, until September 29 1879 when his final ascension ended disastrously in Lake Michigan. A true scientist, he observed the east west jet stream and designed equipment such as the ripcord. He promoted the use of balloons in both transportation and warfare. He devised a plan to capture Vera Cruz during the Mexican War that was never implemented. He participated in Military ascension during the Civil War, presumably firing the first hostile shot from an airborne contrivance over Arlington Virginia. This rebound copy has the original cloth adhered to both boards and the spine area. Page 157/158 has a chip out that eliminated about 1/2x1in. of textblock. this has been repaired with a photogcopy of the original. Page 275/276 is torn, this has also been repaired. A copy of Frontisportrait laid in. All 12 plates are present and complete with a little smudging and foxing. There is a 1in. stain {possible water} on the first half dozen pages.         ALBUM DE VÉZENOBRES.

Paris: Auguste Bry, n.d. (ca 1850). Built in a town rich with Roman and Mediaeval ruins, the 18th century Chateau de Vézénobres in southern France was the inspired creation of the marquis Charles de Calvière, one-time page to Louis XIV, fellow student with Voltaire, companion and military aide to Louis XIV and friend to Madame de Pompadour. Calvière wanted his chateau and park to serve not only as a testament to his heroism as a soldier, but also as a reflection of his standing as an art collector and man of taste. In his short history of the town of Vézénobres Abbé J. Redier described the park of the chateau as a "charmante et petite reproduction de celui de Versailles à une étendue de seize hectares." The chateau and the park remain private today. The lithographed views drawn for this album by Maugendre help us to visualize their appearance in the middle of the nineteenth century. The first plate depicts a bosquet centered around a fountain in front of the courtyard to the chateau while the next view pulls back from the first to show the park as a setting for the chateau with the town visible in the distance. Other plates show the chateau d'eau and parterre, the planted approach and courtyard of the theater, a wooded approach to the chapel and other scenes within the gardens. All the scenes depict plantings and at least one gardener is shown at work in each scene. Rare. OCLC locates a copy in Montpellier only. Oblong folio (29.5 x 43.5 cm); title page with a small tinted lithographed view measuring 7.3 x 11 cm. + 7 tinted lithograph views, each measuring approximately 22.5 x 31 cm. Original embossed pebble cloth with gilt title on upper cover, worn, frayed at edges; binding shaken; mild foxing, some browning in the gutters and a very faint old damp stain affecting plates, mostly at margins, but the images themselves appear quite clean and fresh, any foxing or old stains virtually disappearing into the tint of the lithographs. ***Signed presentation inscription from the Marquis de Calvière, dated Paris 1862. .

(Erotic satire of the Tales of Genji)

1850. Utagawa Kunisada. 3 small quarto volumes. (18)pp. text, + 13ff. plates. Colorful example of the Japanese shunga by the popular and successful Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kunisada. Shunga, which literally translates to "pictures of spring," are Japanese erotic images that celebrate sexual pleasure. They were created by iconic artists such as Utamaro, Hokusai, and Kunisada, and were enjoyed by men and women of all social classes. This particular three-volume set is a satire of the Tales of Genji. Scrolls at the top of each spread show chaste scenes of courtly love from the Tales, while the explicit images below show what Kunisada suspects was actually going on. The illustrations are vibrant and detailed, showcasing Kunisada's skill. Colin Franklin describes the rich colors as: "all stops pulled out for an organ-blast of color printing." Extraordinarily complete: in the original bindings with pictorial title slips, housed in the original box with the same title slip, and including the color-printed dust jacket. One broken thread on the third volume, but an otherwise remarkable survival in this fine condition. (Exploring Japanese Books and Scrolls, p. 74).

Two Watercolour views of Niagara Falls (untitled)

1850 - TWO EARLY AND UNUSUAL PERSPECTIVES OF NIAGARA FALLS A beautiful pair of mid nineteenth century Niagara Falls watercolour views by a renowned British/Canadian landscape artist who documented in watercolours, a number in the Hamilton and Niagara area. Both trimmed to image, each 30 x 43.5 cm (12 x 17 inches), unframed. Both unsigned, common for John Caddy watercolours (as quoted in DCB). #1) American Falls View. [Left view] View with the bridge and house on the island and walkway down is on the left side of Goat Island showing the USA side. Possibly the view of the American Falls would have been taken from somewhere at the top of the hill above Queen Victoria Park, somewhere around Clark Ave or Robinson Street? It's definitely above the level of the River Road, where the notorious "Front" was located. Laid on paper, possible very light fading. Very good condition. #2) Canadian Falls View. [Right view] View from Goat Island and the tower maybe looking to the Canadian side but not showing table rock. The view of the Horseshoe was probably (again) from the top of the hill, at Murray Street (ie, near the site of the Skylon Tower.) The higher elevation at the top of the hill, and the underbrush, hides the Table Rock not portrayed in this view. Laid on canvas, possible light fading. Very good condition Captain John Herbert Caddy (1801-1883) was a painter, draftsman, illustrator and educator. Captain John Herbert Caddy was also a career soldier, civil engineer and explorer. He exhibited with the Upper Canada Provincial Exhibition from 1858 to 1868 and his works are in several Canadian museums including the National Gallery of Canada. Caddy was born in Quebec in 1801 into a family of military engineers. His grandfather had been sent to Newfoundland in the 18th century to build a fort. Caddy was sent to England for his education before returning to Canada. Caddy was a painstaking artist who worked slowly and carefully from pencil sketches made on the scene, through sepia drafts, to the finished picture. Apparently he sometimes completed several versions of the finished landscape but rarely, if ever, signed his work. He exhibited watercolours and oils in the annual provincial exhibitions from 1858 to 1868, winning awards for his meticulous landscapes, marines, and animal and flower studies. Quoted from Dictionary of Canadian Biography (DCB) online. [Attributes: First Edition]
