The Personal History of David Copperfield

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1850. First edition in original monthly parts. Wraps. H. K. Browne. This is the complete first, serialized edition of David Copperfield, housed in a full morocco case with nested cloth chemise. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic, widely viewed to be the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. David Copperfield, published at the height of Dickens’ celebrity, was considered to be largely autobiographical. “It is Dickens's first first-person novel (David as narrator calls it ‘my written memory’) and in it he draws, much more directly than hitherto, on events and people from his own personal life in ‘a very complicated interweaving of truth and fiction’” (ODNB) Dickens called David Copperfield a “favourite child” and wrote of it “Of all my books, I like this the best.” David Copperfield was originally serialized between May 1849 and November 1850 in 20 numbers bound in 19 monthly parts, the last two (19 & 20) being issued as a double number. Design for the green wrappers and forty plates illustrating this first serialized edition was by the English artist and illustrator Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882), known by the pen name “Phiz.” After illustrating Dickens’ first serial fiction, Pickwick Papers (1836-37), “For the next twenty-three years Browne was Dickens’ foremost illustrator and first graphic interpreter.” (ODNB) Reprints were issued in wrappers without any advertisements. All 19 parts in this set have been carefully collated to confirm the presence of all plates by H. K. Browne, as well as all advertisements specified by Hatton and Cleaver (pp.253-272), including the complex folding insert for “Letts’s Diaries for 1850” with sample leaves in Part VIII. In the final installment (Parts 19 and 20) we also find an additional advertisement not specified in Hatton and Cleaver. This is an 8-page leaflet between the front wrapper verso and the facing “Copperfield Advertiser” for The Architectural Antiquities of Athens (“This Day is published, in Imperial Quarto, price One Shilling, to be continued Fortnightly, No. 1…”). All original wrappers are intact, with a partial vertical split to the spine of Part 1. We note the same previous owner name inked in the upper blank margin of the front wrapper of 14 parts - Numbers III, VI, VIII-XI, and XIII-XX. The set is housed in a red cloth chemise nested within a two-piece full red morocco box with rounded spine, raised bands, gilt rule spine compartments, and double gilt rule borders on the covers. The morocco box is well crafted, showing some venerable age consonant with the contents it has well protected. We note light overall scuffing to the box with some darkening of the top and spine, and with the nested red cloth chemise split at some of the folds.

UNION WITH FREEMEN - NO UNION WITH SLAVEHOLDERS. ANTI- SLAVERY MEETINGS! [caption title]

Salem, Oh.: Homestead Print, 1850. Broadside, 16 x 10 3/4 inches. A few short closed edge tears, light toning and foxing. Very good plus. A rare and striking abolitionist broadside from Salem, Ohio, the seat of the Western Anti-Slavery Society, and a small but important center of progressive movements through much of the 19th century. As suggested by their advertisement's headline, "Union with Freemen - No Union with Slaveholders," the members of the Western Anti- Slavery Society were radical Garrisonian abolitionists who believed the U.S. Constitution was fundamentally a pro-slavery document and therefore unfit to bind together a morally just nation. Formed in the mold of Garrison's New England Anti-Slavery Society (founded 1832) and American Anti-Slavery Society (1833), the Ohio Anti- Slavery Society first assembled in 1833 in Putnam, Ohio, and in 1839 moved its headquarters to Salem and became known as the Western Anti-Slavery Society. From 1845 to 1861 the Society published a weekly newspaper, THE ANTI- SLAVERY BUGLE, printed for the first five weeks in New Lisbon, Ohio, and for all subsequent issues in Salem. The text of the broadside, a printed blank form for advertising abolitionist meetings, reads in full as follows: "Union with Freemen - No Union with Slaveholders. ANTI- SLAVERY MEETINGS! Anti-Slavery Meetings will be held in this place, to commence on [blank] in the [blank] at [blank] To be Addressed by [blank] Agents of the Western ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY. Three millions of your fellow beings are in chains - the Church and Government sustains the horrible system of oppression. Turn Out! AND LEARN YOUR DUTY TO YOURSELVES, THE SLAVE AND GOD. EMANCIPATION or DISSOLUTION, and a FREE NORTHERN REPUBLIC!" OCLC lists only two copies, at Yale and Williams College; the Library of Congress holds an additional copy, which may be viewed online at the American Memory web site (see below). OCLC 59557224.         THE DOCTRINE OF THE UNITY OF THE HUMAN RACE EXAMINED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF SCIENCE

Charleston, S.C.: C. Canning, 1850. First Edition. Half Leather. Very Good binding. An important work in which Bachman -- pastor St. John's Lutheran Church in Charleston -- maintains that all of humanity derives from one species. By the minister, naturalist, friend of Audubon (he collaborated with Audubon in writing The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, and two of his daughters married two of Audubon's sons) [DNB, I, pp. 466, 467], his thoughts here articulated influenced on the evolutionary theory which rocked the 19th century world. Binding is half-leather over marbled boards, and is lacking the front endpaper. With the bookplate of the "North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention". Pencilled gift inscription on the title page. The front hinge has an old paper reinforcement. One surmises that he was a man of some courage, arguing as he did in Charleston in 1850 that whites and blacks are of the same species. Uncommon in the trade. (DNB, I, pp. 466,467). Very Good binding.

1850. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). N. p., [20. VI. 1850?].

1850. 8vo. 2 pp. on double leaf. Detailed letter to "mio carissimo Generale", i. e. the Naples general Guglielmo Pepe (1783-1855), regarding his "Narrative of Scenes and Events in Italy from 1847 to 1849": "Ho preso varie volte la penna per rispondere all'articolo dello Standard da voi indicatomi; ma come difendere l'opera da quel giornale [...] criticata, se prima non avessi letto l'opera stessa? Addio, caro Generale [...]". - Some ink smudging and offsetting.

Useful Art Cyclopedia Chemical Mechanical 1850's Illustrated leather 4 vols book

1850 - Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts, Mechanical and Chemical, Manufacturers, Mining, and Engineering with An Introductory Essay on the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, 1851 The Whole Illustrated by forty steel engravings and two thousand four hundred and seventy-seven wood engravings. Edited by Charles Tomlinson One of the best mid-19th century sets on popular science. Complete four volume set, uncommonly found here in handsome 19th century full dark blue morocco leather bindings. Set remains well bound and is profusely illustrated w/ 40 steel engraved plates and 2,477 engraved images, many full or half page. The incredible array of hand-produced images include panoramic views of various sorts and locations and all aspects and types of science, industry and innovation. The vast range of topics includes (but is not limited to): an extensive overview of the 1851 Great Industrial Exhibition held in London, anchors, beer, book binding, coal, cheese, candles, calico-printing, calculating machines, bridges, horology, gun powder, glass, fires, envelope-folding machine, magno-electric machines, electricity, dynameters, roads, seal-engraving, varnish, topaz & gem stones, telegraph, steam, sodium, soap, silver, distillation, printing, pens, oils, mother of pearl, mercury, locks, lighthouses, light, leather, lead, iron, photography, paper, organ, cement, minerals, matches, machinery, on and on- countless hundreds of different topics, all discussed from the perspective of this era. Great historical content for the modern reader, presenting many fields from a mid-19th century perspective utterly unlike anything presented today. Issued c.1852-60, London by James Virtue Once outstanding period full leather book bindings of the mid 19th century, showing their age but still remaining noble in appearance. Substantial bindings, richly done, spines intricately gilt stamped, raised bands, contrasting red morocco gilt title labels. Boards intricately stamped around the diced central panels, this outlined in a rich running foliate gilt pattern, all set within double rules. All edges gilt, tissue guards to the engraved plates. In good+ to near VG, sound, clean, tight condition. Bindings still sturdy and very well bound, square, small scattered scuffing, most visible along joints and edges although some scattered small rubbing spots around as well. show some signes of age, light general age wear, -- still attractive as a set. Leather remains supple and sound, small normal age scuffing to ends, joints and corners. Textblocks square, tight, clean- moderately toned with some dampstaining to a few of the engraved plates in the first volume, plus scattered mostly small foxing throughout. Set has an overall pleasing aspect to it, the foxing entirely inoffensive and easy to overlook or forgive. Old owners name to front endpapers. Photos capture better than words. Books are approaching 175 years old, so they are not modern. There-in lies their appeal- less than perfect but handsome old leather bound books. We enjoy old objects like these with gentle age flaws. They display character and slight wear to an old object gives it a modern appeal which we believe exceeds the same item in untouched almost perfect condition. Measures c.10 " x 7" x 6" along the shelf [A6585] [Attributes: Hard Cover]
