        Poesias.

Lisbon, Casa da Viuva Bertrand e Filhos, 1850. - 8°, contemporary red quarter morocco, spine gilt with short author and title (slight wear). Scattered light foxing, but overall in very good, attractive condition. Half-title has rubber stamp with portrait of Camilo Castello Branco; signature of Freitas Fortuna in blank portion of title. (2 ll.), 326 pp., (1 l.). *** FIRST SEPARATE COLLECTED EDITION of Herculano's poetry, which had appeared earlier in various periodicals and in Harpa do Crente, 1838. By 1850 Herculano was a well respected historian. That and the taste for romantic poetry made Poesias a best-seller. It appeared again in 1860, and by the 1950s had gone through fourteen editions. There have been a number of editions since. Brito Aranha devotes nearly 50 pages to an analysis of the substantial changes Herculano made from the original versions of these poems. While Herculano is best known for his historical works, Bell comments that "Some of the poems of A Harpa do Crente [reprinted as part I of this collection] . rise to noble heights by reason of a fine conviction and a rugged grandeur, as of blocks of granite" (p. 293).Herculano (1810-1877) is recognized as the greatest Portuguese historian of the nineteenth century, and one of the greatest that country ever produced. A complete volume of Innocêncio is devoted to a bibliography and analysis of his works, which include Historia da origem e estabelecimento da Inquisição em Portugal, 3 volumes, Lisbon 1854-59, and Historia de Portugal, 4 volumes, Lisbon 1846-53, both of which have appeared in numerous subsequent editions. Herculano was a novelist as well as a poet and historian, and is responsible for introducing to Portugal the historical romance in the manner of Sir Walter Scott, which influenced Almeida Garrett and later authors.*** Innocêncio I, 35; XXI, 410-57. Not in Ticknor Catalogue. Bell, Portuguese Literature pp. 292-5. Saraiva & Lopes, História da literatura portuguesa (1972) pp. 785-808 (especially pp. 788-91 and 805-6). Porbase locates a single copy, in the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra [!?]. Copac adds a copy at Glasgow. NUC: DLC, MiU, MH, ICN. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: Philadelphia Victorian Family Album

[Philadelphia]: Webb S. Keller, 1850. Very Good. Small quarto measuring 7.5" x 10". Gilt edges. A collection of 39 black and white or sepia toned photographs most measuring about 4" x 6". Very good, lacking the boards and spine with near fine photographs. A photo album of mounted oval portraits from the mid 1800s of a family from the Philadelphia area. There are few captions except beneath two pictures of young girls labeling them as Josephine and May Hencken and one below the picture of a child that reads, Elias Joseph Hencken Freeland. The photographs are all of well-dressed Victorian era Americans both men and women as well as children and adults. Three of the photos are laid in: one of an older woman reading on a porch, another is a portrait of a man, and the final is a young soldier in the uniform of the U.S. Cavalry. It would seem that the generation of Freelands represented in this album migrated to Philadelphia and New Jersey from the town of Freeland, Pennsylvania after a family homestead, dubbed Fort Freeland, was destroyed in a battle with Native Americans in 1778, causing something of a generational migration east.

        The Scarlet Letter, A Romance

Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850 Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850. First edition, first printing. Publisher's brown T cloth decoratively stamped in blind to front board and lettered in gilt to spine, cream endpapers, publisher's ads inserted at front. A very good copy with some wear and rubbing to spine, slightly cocked, and page edges lightly toned, with expert repairs to spine. Overall very pleasing in the original publisher's binding. Housed in a custom slipcase with folding chemise. BAL 7600. From the library of Pulitzer Prize winning author Kenneth Silverman. The Scarlet Letter is set in the author's hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, in the early 17th century, just before the onset of the infamous Salem witch trials. The novel features Hester Prynne, an adulteress facing the shame and judgment of her Puritan community. In addition to officially sanctioned public humiliation, Prynne must wear a scarlet "A" pinned to her chest as a symbol of her transgression. After being released from prison, Prynne is exiled from her church and community, and she is forced to raise her daughter, the product of her adulterous relationship, and continue her work of helping the poor in solitude. Through the juxtaposition of Prynne's social condemnation and her charitable endeavors, Hawthorne explores the themes of guilt, sin, and Puritanism. Interestingly, The Scarlet Letter was published before Hawthorne achieved literary success, as indicated by his inclusion of his introductory essay "The Custom-House," in which the author chronicles his years working in Salem prior to writing The Scarlet Letter. This essay was met with harsh criticism from his local community, prompting the inclusion of a preface in subsequent editions in which Hawthorne defends "The Custom-House," which he says "could not have been done in a better or a kindlier spirit, nor, so far as his abilities availed, with a livelier effect of truth." Chiefly a biographer, Professor Kenneth Silverman co-directed the American Civilization program at NYU, and won not only the Pulitzer but also the Bancroft Prize for his work The Life and Times of Cotton Mather. Other notable works of his include biographies of Edgar Allan Poe and Samuel F. B. Morse. A magician himself, he also profiled the life of Harry Houdini. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Philosophy of Railroads, Published at the Request of the Directors of the Montreal and Lachine Railroads

Toronto: W.H. Armour, 1850 40 pp. Original printed wraps. The author, one of Canada's greatest civil engineers, opposes a plan to extend the 8 mile portage Montreal-Lachine Railroad to Kingston, opting instead for a major line from Montreal to Toronto that would connect western commercial interests with the St. Lawrence. Thomas Coltrin Keefer (1821-1915), "one of the great hydraulic engineers of his time," was fully aware of the superior importance of railways to national economic development. In this tract he offers an exhaustive analysis of tremendous stimulating effect such a road would have on the Canadian economy, utilizing comparisons with railways and commercial activity in the United States. This, a resetting of the first edition of the same year (39 pp.), was followed by several later editions, all scarce. TPL 3089. Dictionary of Canadian Biography.

[Broadside] Greece! Greece, "The First Garden of Liberty's Tree," Struggling to Shake Off the Yoke of Turkish Tyranny. Marco Bozzaris in the Turkish Camp. Christophoros Plato Castanis, a Native Greek, Educated in the United States, Will Give an Extempore Lecture and an Exhibition on Greece and Turkey...

n.p.: Spy Print, 1850. Very Good. Approximately 24 x 41cm. Later folds (probably for storage). Has a few small waterspots and bits of other soiling and wear. This broadside probably promoted various appearances by Castanis. Blank spaces for place and date have been filled in with ink as "The Town Hall" and "This Friday Only." Castanis wrote five or more books on Greece and his experiences. He lists four of his books at the end of this rather wordy broadside as being available at bookstores. His list does not include "The Greek Exile" which was published in 1851 which led us to believe that this was issued before that date. A few testimonials are included, the latest of which is dated 1848.

        Slavery

[c. 1850s]. Rare wrought iron shackle with a barrel type locking mechanism. This type of restraint was primarily used on South Carolina plantations to restrict the movement of high risk, runaway slaves. The complete shackle with links and lock is approximately 23 inches long. The pins are four and three inches long. Excellent patina. Fine condition.<br /><br />Deaccessioned from a museum. From the letter of authenticity: “Large Hand Forged South Carolina Slave Shackle: Circa 1850’s. Rare Wrought Iron Shackle with a barrel type locking mechanism. There is an imprint on the shackle (FM) that represents the initials of the plantation owner. The chain consists of eight (8) small forged links, consistent with pre-1863 technology. Such restraint was used on a large plantation to restrict movement on a high risk (runaway) person while working on the plantation or hire out to another plantation. Excellent patina surface on the metal. This is to certify that the Slave Shackle accompanying this certificate is authentic as described, and was carefully researched through all available sources of information. This is an historical piece of history from the African Slave Trade during the 1800’s...” The F and M are cut into the lock to indicate ownership should the slave escape.<br />
