An extraordinary collection of 26 photographic portraits of leading photographers

Various places, 1850s-90s 26 photographs. Various processes. Many of the portraits were taken at the studios of the photographers themselves. This superb collection of photographs of photographers documents the spread of photography from its inventor Daguerre through the art's earliest practitioners in the United States and ultimately to the great photographers of the Civil War and the American West. The collection begins with a portrait of Louis Daguerre. Portraits of American photographic pioneers include Samuel Morse, who brought Daguerre's process to America, and John William Draper, the American scientist who helped to perfect it. Mathew Brady, greatest of all 19th-century American photographers, is represented by a fine CDV portrait and an image from the end of the war in which Brady inserts himself into a group portrait of U.S. Grant's staff. Brady trained photography giants Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan, both of whom are represented with stunning portraits. Finally, the collection includes runs of portraits of photographers who made famous portraits of Lincoln, associates of Gardner, American regional photographers, some with their photographic equipment, and photographers of the American West including William Henry Jackson and Carleton Watkins. This remarkable assemblage of rare portraits, which would be impossible to duplicate at any price, vividly documents the lineage of photography from Daguerre through his leading heirs in the United States. Examples include: 1. Louis Daguerre. Inventor of photography 2. Samuel Morse. Artist and inventor who introduced the daguerreotype to America and trained the first generation of American photographers. 3. John William Draper. Pioneering photographer who made crucial improvements to the daguerreotype and who took the first successful pictures of the moon and of a woman's face. 4. Mathew Brady. Towering figure in 19th-century American photography. "More than any other American, Brady shaped the role of the photographer as a national historian" (Trachtenberg). 5. Alexander Gardner. Leading Civil War photographer and pioneer of photojournalism. 6. Timothy O'Sullivan. Major Civil War photographer who took the first 44 photos in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War, and later a major photographer of the American West. 7. Carleton Watkins. Giant of photography of the American West and "the greatest American photographer before Stieglitz" (Naef) 8. William Henry Jackson. Most famous photographer of the American West in his time. and others Please inquire for a full description.

        Magnificent Beecher Family Photograph Collection

Highly important ambrotype 1. The Beecher Family (Harriet Beecher Stowe, Lyman Beecher, Henry Ward Beecher, Catharine Beecher, and Thomas, William, Edward, Charles, Isabella, & Mary Beecher). Mathew Brady Studios, 1850s. Half plate ambrotype. Original coloring of cheeks. Contemporary case, lacking upper cover, mat with stamp of G.M. Howe, Portland and Upton, Maine. Small scratch, some spotting due to emulsion separation, but overall the emulsion is intact and the image is clear with good contrast. This splendid and rare Mathew Brady Studio group portrait de- picts ten members of the celebrated Beecher family. In this family portrait, Lyman Beecher is seated at center, flanked by his four daughters (Harriet, Catharine, Mary, and Isabella). Behind them stand the five of the seven brothers (William, Edward, Henry Ward, Charles, and Thomas--George had died in 1843 and James was a missionary in China). The Beechers were one of America's most famous families. Patri- arch Lyman Beecher, famed clergyman, abolitionist, and social reformer, was a central figure of the Second Great Awakening. Harriet is most famous as the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, one of the best-known men of his day, was an evangelist, abolitionist, advocate of women's suffrage, proponent of evolution, and social reformer. Catharine Beecher was one of the leading advocates of female education. Charles Beecher was a distinguished clergyman, author, and composer of hymns, and his brother Thomas K. Beecher, also a minister, is best remembered as a close friend of Samuel Clemens. Isabella Beecher was a major figure in the women's suffrage movement. This ambrotype precedes the other famous Brady photograph of the Beechers, the 1861 portrait of Harriet, Lyman, and Henry (albumen print, National Portrait Gallery). The case is stamped George M. Howe, listed as a Daguerreian at 112 Middle Street, Portland, Maine from 1853 to 1860. The use of a case from a gallery in Maine may be explained by Harriet's move to Brunswick, Maine in 1850 when her husband Calvin Ellis Stowe secured a teaching position at Bowdoin. A later albumen print at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford bears the Brady stamp. Colored Salt Print by Mathew Brady 2. Lyman Beecher. Mathew Brady Studios, ca. 1856. Hand-colored salted paper photograph (7 1⁄4 x 6 in.). Half plate daguerreotype case with brass mat and red velvet retainer in double- hinged, push-button plain leather case with "BRADY'S GALLERY, 205 & 359 BROADWAY NEW YORK" stamped in dark red velvet case lining. Case edges heavily worn; without glass. Clergyman, educator, and social reformer, Lyman Beecher embodied the shift from the harsh, demanding Puritan faith of the Second Great Awakening to a religion that found its expression in larger society. A leading figure in Calvinist churches in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, Beecher played a key role in founding Yale Divinity School. In 1833, Beecher and his family moved west to Cincinnati, where he became president of the Lane Theological Seminary, a training ground for the religious leaders of the abolition movement. "Magnetic in personality, incisive and powerful in manner of expression, Beecher was in his prime one of the most eloquent of American pulpit orators" (NNDB). Exhibited: National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Fogg Art Museum (Harvard University), and International Center of Photography. Reference: featured in "A Gallery of Images," Mary Panzer, Mathew Brady and the Image of History (Smithsonian, 1997). Signed by Harriet Beecher Stowe 3. Harriet Beecher Stowe. George H. Hastings, ca. 1880s. Albumen print, cabinet card mount. Photographer's studio stamp on the verso: "Geo H. Hastings / Photographer. / 147 Tremont St. Cor. West St. / Boston, Mass / Elevator to Studio." Signed by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Daughter of Lyman Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe is most famous for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, serialized in 1851-2.

Autograph Album Owned and Circulated By Kate Bowden at Georgetown Female Seminary, Scott County, Kentucky , 1850-51

25 leaves filled out by mostly female students at Georgetown Female Seminary mostly signed. Original black leather with gilt stamped design on front and back covers. The Catalogue of the school from 1850-1852 notes that she is enrolled all three years. Additionally, signed by her female friends (mostly noted in the printed catalogue) such as Mollie H. Payne, Ellen Dunn, Bettie M. Craig, Mary H. Brown and some male students at the nearby college [very strict chaperone rules were exercised] some using the classical name Junius, others signing their names. One long poem in German (presumably from an instructor). The calligraphy is beautiful and the sentiments typical of the era. The school has Greek, The long deeply thought from Bettie Craig speaks of their secret vows, their attachment and while these may well have been innocent expressions of deep friendship in the 19th Century, they would certainly have been considered differently in the 21st century.

Izdatel’ angliiskoi gazety “Taims” i russkii sapozhnik [The editor of the English newspaper “The Times” and the Russian bootmaker].

[Russia, 1850s.] - An unusual image, published during the time of the Crimean War, highlighting The Times’ position during the hostilities. The editor complains to the bootmaker that he has torn his mouth through shouting on behalf of Russia, which the bootmaker has set about to repair, remarking (to himself) ‘what thick skin this man has’. John Thadeus Delane (1817–1879) was editor of The Times for thirty-six years, 1841–77. ‘Under Delane’s editorship The Times was loosely identified with Liberalism [and] the power of The Times in opposition to government was seen very clearly during the Crimean War, when Delane felt it was his duty to condemn those directing the war In his lifetime Delane was widely regarded as the unquestioned head of the journalistic profession, who had done much to raise the tone of journalism. Some of his innovative methods of reporting news, which included the use of interviews, and his Crimean and other “crusades”, foreshadowed the “new journalism” of the later nineteenth century’ (Oxford DNB). Tinted lithograph (268 × 234 mm), creased where previously folded, sometime torn along the central fold and repaired, other paper repairs in places (affecting one character only), but in very good condition overall.         Poesias.

Lisbon, Casa da Viuva Bertrand e Filhos, 1850. - 8°, contemporary red quarter morocco, spine gilt with short author and title (slight wear). Scattered light foxing, but overall in very good, attractive condition. Half-title has rubber stamp with portrait of Camilo Castello Branco; signature of Freitas Fortuna in blank portion of title. (2 ll.), 326 pp., (1 l.). *** FIRST SEPARATE COLLECTED EDITION of Herculano's poetry, which had appeared earlier in various periodicals and in Harpa do Crente, 1838. By 1850 Herculano was a well respected historian. That and the taste for romantic poetry made Poesias a best-seller. It appeared again in 1860, and by the 1950s had gone through fourteen editions. There have been a number of editions since. Brito Aranha devotes nearly 50 pages to an analysis of the substantial changes Herculano made from the original versions of these poems. While Herculano is best known for his historical works, Bell comments that "Some of the poems of A Harpa do Crente [reprinted as part I of this collection] . rise to noble heights by reason of a fine conviction and a rugged grandeur, as of blocks of granite" (p. 293).Herculano (1810-1877) is recognized as the greatest Portuguese historian of the nineteenth century, and one of the greatest that country ever produced. A complete volume of Innocêncio is devoted to a bibliography and analysis of his works, which include Historia da origem e estabelecimento da Inquisição em Portugal, 3 volumes, Lisbon 1854-59, and Historia de Portugal, 4 volumes, Lisbon 1846-53, both of which have appeared in numerous subsequent editions. Herculano was a novelist as well as a poet and historian, and is responsible for introducing to Portugal the historical romance in the manner of Sir Walter Scott, which influenced Almeida Garrett and later authors.*** Innocêncio I, 35; XXI, 410-57. Not in Ticknor Catalogue. Bell, Portuguese Literature pp. 292-5. Saraiva & Lopes, História da literatura portuguesa (1972) pp. 785-808 (especially pp. 788-91 and 805-6).         Photo Album]: Philadelphia Victorian Family Album

Webb S. Keller, [Philadelphia] 1850 - Small quarto measuring 7.5" x 10". Gilt edges. A collection of 39 black and white or sepia toned photographs most measuring about 4" x 6". Very good, lacking the boards and spine with near fine photographs. A photo album of mounted oval portraits from the mid 1800s of a family from the Philadelphia area. There are few captions except beneath two pictures of young girls labeling them as Josephine and May Hencken and one below the picture of a child that reads, Elias Joseph Hencken Freeland. The photographs are all of well-dressed Victorian era Americans both men and women as well as children and adults. Three of the photos are laid in: one of an older woman reading on a porch, another is a portrait of a man, and the final is a young soldier in the uniform of the U.S. Cavalry. It would seem that the generation of Freelands represented in this album migrated to Philadelphia and New Jersey from the town of Freeland, Pennsylvania after a family homestead, dubbed Fort Freeland, was destroyed in a battle with Native Americans in 1778, causing something of a generational migration east.

Rear Admiral Sir James Clark Ross, D.C.L: F.R.S. From the Original Portrait in the Royal Hospital Greenwich by several Naval Officers & Scientific Men in honour of his great discoveries & Achievements in the Arctic and the Antarctic Regions

[London 1850 - Mezzotint portrait, engraved by Alexander Scott after Stephen Pearce. Sheet size: approx. 23 x 17 1/2 inches. A fine portrait of Polar explorer James Clark Ross. The nephew of Arctic explorer Sir John Ross, James Clark Ross accompanied his uncle on his first voyage to the Arctic in 1818 before serving under William Parry on his expeditions to the Arctic between 1819 and 1827. His most noted Arctic accomplishment, however, would be on Sir John Ross' second voyage, where he led a small party to locate the position of the North Magnetic Pole on 1 June 1831 on the Boothia Peninsula. Following that success, James Clark Ross was given command of the ships Erebus and Terror (later of Sir John Franklin fame) on a voyage to the Antarctic. On that 1839-1843 expedition, Ross forced his way through the ice pack becoming the first to enter what would be named Ross Sea and to lay eyes on numerous Antarctic features, including the Ross Ice Shelf, Victoria Land, the Admiralty Mountains and more. Both his discovery of the Magnetic North Pole, as well as his attainment of the highest southern latitude to date are commemorated on this fine portrait. The artist, Stephen Pearce, painted two portraits of Ross (1800-1862): . the original of the present image which remains in Greenwich, as well as one now in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Fanny wrote the above two volumes about her time traveling through India on horseback and befriending people around her while learning Persian, Hindustani and Urdu. Parkes allows a pre-colonial perspective of northern India and its peoples and customs, recording changes in Britain's governing of India, the economic impact of such policies, and domestic problems in Indian society, from 1822–45. The people she encountered included wealthy socialites as well as famine stricken residents of Kanauj seen during a trip over mountains from Landour to Simla. Parkes' narrative reflects her admiration and respect for the richness of Indian culture. Including a glossary of terms and a collection of translated Indian proverb‘Fanny was a passionate lover of India and, though a woman of her time, in her writing and her travels did her best to understand and build bridges across the colonial divide,’ William Dalrymple.         A SKETCH OF THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF HENRY LEANDER FOOTE, SENTENCED TO BE HUNG IN NEW HAVEN, JUNE 19, 1850, (REPRIEVED BY THE LEGISLATURE TILL OCTOBER 2, 1850,) FOR THE MURDER OF MISS EMILY H. COOPER.TOGETHER WITH HIS ADVENTURES AS A U.S. DRAGOON DURING THE FLORIDA WAR. WITH. HIS CONFESSION OF THE RAPE AND MURDER OF MISS COOPER, AND HIS ADDRESS ON THE GALLOWS.

Title in contemporary manuscript on front wrapper, later institutional bookplate inside front. Tanning and foxing. Good, in original condition. A lurid autobiography written by a Connecticut murderer who also served as a Dragoon in Florida during the Second Seminole War. He claims to relate in the present work "a description of the horrid massacre of two families, and some battles, never before published," and his detailed account of his service from 1835 to 1837 occupies most of the first part of the pamphlet. The Appendix contains his confession to the rape and murder of Emily Cooper, his twelve-year- old cousin, and the address he planned to give at the time of his hanging, in which he blames (among other things) "licentious novels" for leading him astray. This is the second edition, with three added pages containing details of his execution, published after his hanging. OCLC locates only three copies of this edition, at the New- York Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Clements Library; and two copies of the first edition, at Yale and Trinity College.
