        Souvenir d'une promenade a Versailles.

au Bureau des Galeries Historiques de Versailles, 1850. One of several works with the identical title but from different publishers and with different contents! The present volume contains engravings after paintings in the palace's "Galeries Historiques": the engravers include Leroux, Masson, Thomas, Nargoot, Rebel, Frilley, and many others. Curiously, many engravings bear a faint line of identification reading "Diagraphe et Pantographe Gavard" and they have non-sequential numbering, meaning the images from this source could be and were recombined to form a wide variety of souvenir albums. In this copy all plates are guarded by sheets of heavy paper stock. Binding: In the style of a percaline mosaïquée, but the gilt and mosaic are applied to a textured pebbled cloth. Spine gilt extra with added "mosaic" of green, white, red and blue. Front cover with a blind-stamped border incorporating elegant corner-pieces; within this, "Souvenir de Versailles" gilt-stamped in an arc above a large on-laid crowned coat of arms flanked by banners and flags, this embellished in gilt with rich use of blue, white, red, blue, and green. Rear cover with similar blind-stamped border and a different large gilt-stamped center device strikingly incorporating an on-lay of blue stamped in gilt with a military medal. All edges gilt.

Naval Tactics and Trials of Sailing; illustrated by diagrams of the several evolutions.

London: Charles Wilson (at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy), 1850. Quarto, with seven plates (five folding), and many illustrations in the text, many highlighted in red and blue; original green cloth, gilt. First edition of this important study of naval tactics by the experienced mariner George Biddlecombe, RN. In this work Biddlecombe provides a substantial and detailed review of British naval tactics at mid-century, and his work was much studied at the time (although it came to be criticized for its overly cautious and mechanistic approach). For several years Biddlecombe served as master of the St Vincent, which bore Admiral Sir Charles Napier's flag from 1847 to 1849, and it is this 120-gun vessel that is depicted under sail as the frontispiece. By the time he wrote this work Biddlecombe was safely ensconced as the master of Her Majesty's Yacht Victoria and Albert, but few officers had seen more active service in their career. He served on the famous HMS Blonde and was part of the rescue of HMS Challenger off the coast of Chile in June 1835 (so ably described by another participant, FitzRoy of the Beagle). In his later career he reconnoitred many parts of the Baltic, and was influential in the region until he took up the position of assistant master attendant at Keyham yard, Devonport, in 1855, being promoted to master attendant of Woolwich yard in 1864. He was knighted by the queen at Windsor on 26 June 1873 and received a Greenwich Hospital pension soon afterwards. This work is not commonly seen, especially in such handsome condition. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Robert T. Tempest of York. Occasional light spotting, one plate browned; cloth slightly rubbed, a good copy.

A weekly issue removed from larger bound volumes of the Comptes Rendus des Seances de l'Academie des Sciences, volume 30, no 21, 1850, pp.663-665 in the weekly issue of pp (637)-672, and offered in the scarce original pink printed wrappers (both of which are present but detached). Crisp copy, though the wrapper covers are a little frail. +++ Helmut Gernsheim ("History of Photography") notes that this publications by Blancquart-Evrard (1802-1872) "marked the beginning of a new era of photography" by introducing a "very considerable improvement of Talbot's calotype process". The calotype process offered very contrasty images and were lacking in half-tone sensibilities; "the paper ("wet process") approach by Blancquart-Evrard, which provided a (paper) surface impregnated with silver nitrate [and therefore much more light-sensitive, rather than the standardized practice of brushing on the silver solution], was much more able to reveal tone and detail". This paper would be followed by another in 1851 in the "Comptes Rendus" and then by the publication of his influential book, Traite photographie sur papier, also in 1851. "In the field of photography we are indepted to Blanquart-Evrard for many improvements,in particular for having introduced the developing process of iodide bromide (or silver chloride) paper by gallic acid as a rapid printing process for producing large editions of silver prints."--"History of Photography", Josef Maria Eder, pg 328.(See also "The Albumen & Salted Paper Book: The History and Practice of Photographic Printing 1840/1895", James M. Reilly.) It is in the last two short paragraphs of this paper that we arrive at the preparation of teh paper with albumin--this the famous invention of Blanquart-Evrard (as recognized in Beaumont Newhall, "History of Photography", pg 60) and which would revolutionize the practice of photography for its depth, and quick exposure and development times, and which would become the most commonly used printing material. (See also "A Concise History of Photography", by Helmut Gernsheim, pg 16, in discussing the composition of the paper; also, Brian Coe, "The Birth of Photography', page 35 and 136.) Leather corners of bds severely rubbed, edges less so. All edges speckled. Mild rubbing to rear bd. Inner hinges look sl. pulled, but still tight. Residue of old bookplate on ft. pastedown, mostly rubbed off. Old tape repairs to eps. Title pg. has perf. stamp of Springfield Library above title as well as a small blind embossed stamp. Some rubbing to outlside margin of title pg. with loss of a 1x5 cm. strip at lower outer corner, well removed from print. Perforated stamp repeated at very top of pages 7/8, 57/58. No card pocket or residue. Very mild spotty foxing, never obscuring text. Occas. slight finger soiling to margins. pp. 92., lacks 4 adverts. The author arrived in gold rush California in 1849, having sailed from Baltimore. He relates details of the journey and of the state of health in mining country. He became ill for a while, himself, and makes many observations of the health and disabilities of the miners. He gives medical advice for persons considering emigration to California. Despite its ex lib state, this is a very nice copy of an exceedingly scarce work. Howes T-451, Cowan I-p.235, Cowan II-p.648, Decker 28:298, Streeter Sale 2656, Sabin 97640, Eberstadt 138:107-108.         The Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles in Hindustání.Calcutta (Kolkata), The Bible Translation Society, American and Foreign Bible Society, 1850. 12mo. With the title in Hindustani (Urdu) and English, and the text in Urdu only. The pages procede from right to left like a normal book in Arabic type. Very slightly browned, but in very good condition. The binding cloth is cracked at the hinge, but otherwise good. A rare Urdu missionary Bible text, in Arabic type.

        The Natural History of Birds.

Concord: New Hampshire, Merrill, circa, 1850. Duodecimo, with twelve wood-engravings; original pictorial wrappers, crudely sewn at spine, presentation inscription from a teacher to a student on verso of cover. Rare American children's natural history primer, including a lyrebird. Each of the ten birds is fully described and illustrated with naïve word blocks. "The Lyre Bird of New Holland" is pictured with a description of its appearance, habits and song, "This singular bird lives almost wholly on the ground, like our common poultry... The inhabitants of New Holland even call it the mountain pheasant. Its voice is far more melodious than either the bird of paradise or any domestic fowls...".The heading on the front wrapper reads "Museum of Natural History", indicating that it was evidently part of a series by this publisher. Early ephemeral books for children rarely survive, and this one with an Australian reference is not known to Ferguson. Some tears at gutter and at foot of a couple of leaves, dusted, some foxing and stains.

Eleven chromolithographs of fruit and flowers from "Fruits from the Garden and Field."

London. [ 1850]. Each plate 10 x 7 inches. Plates have overall light foxing; the peach has discoloration at the top left of the sheet. Loosely laid into the original elaborately embossed leather binding which has been mended with a soft brown leather spine. Sold as a group of plates. This is a group of 11 of the 12 plates that were published in Fruits from the Garden and Field. As one would expect with a work associated with Owen Jones, the chromolithography is of an extremely high quality, including the use of gold lettering. These are naturalistic treatments of plants, as opposed to the decorative design of much of Jones work, but pattern is an important part of the image. Each plant is associated with a quality or sentiment, which is elegantly but lightly lettered in gold (and sometimes a little hard to read). The fruits and flowers are: apple (utility); pomegranate (hard to make out - amb..?); wheat and hops (strength & wealth); blackberries and other red berries (charity); strawberries (kisses); grapes (hospitality); hazelnuts? and grain (retrospection); cherries (smiles); mulberries? (tears); peach (sensibility?); apricots (independence).

Album of mid-nineteenth century watercolours, bearing woodblock titlling stamp 'Chinese House Ornaments'.

Canton: circa, 1850. Album containing 12 original watercolour plates on pith paper, each measuring 240 x 160 mm., tipped in with blue silk borders; bound in original silk-covered boards with yellow ties;and preserved in a bookform case. A remarkable album of original watercolours celebrating the life-world of the literati. The album forms an intriguing catalogue of traditional Chinese scholarly objects; including Buddhist statues, vases, wrist-rests, musical instruments, scholar-stones, handscrolls, miniature ornamental trees and tray landscapes. While similar albums of watercolours illustrating costumes, punishments, trades and natural beauties are sometimes encountered, such an album dedicated to objects of scholarship and meditation is a rare and special find. In Confucian philosophy the literati enjoyed a highly esteemed role, cultivating detachment from the day-to-day bustle of worldly affairs to achieve sanguine and lucid intellectual insight. This album lovingly captures the material world and cherished objects of classical Chinese scholarship, and so offers a rare insight into bygone way of life. Two plates a little chipped (images unaffected) but overall in very good condition.

Lady Julia Cornwallis Sheet Music Album.

London. Chappell, D'Almaine, Jullien, et al. 1840s thru 1850s. Three-quarter leather bound volume, 13 x 10 inches, containing more than two dozen individual pieces of sheet music dating from the 1840s and 1850s. The corners of the volume are bumped; there is a 1 inch loss at bottom of leather spine; text block firmly bound. A paste-down leather label on the marble-papered front cover of the book is inscribed in gold lettering with the owner's name: Lady Julia Cornwallis. The volume contains many attractive color-lithographed covers (likely augmented with hand-coloring); a good many of these stunning covers are the work of the prolific John Brandard and were printed by the renowned firm M. & N. Hanhart. Several of the covers reflect time-toning or modest staining, but the contents, overall, are in excellent condition. This is a fine collection of mid-nineteenth century music and the attendant lithographed cover art. The volume would make an excellent addition to a library with a British sheet music emphasis. The collection of British sheet music gathered by Lady Julia Cornwallis (2 July 1844 to 1 September 1883) is an especially fine assemblage of mid-nineteenth century popular music. The composer most frequently represented in the volume is Charles D'Albert with nine titles (including the Galop celebrating the clipper ship Schomberg, in 1855 the largest vessel ever built in the UK); other composers include Louis D'Egville, Louis Jullien (the Cricket Polka and the Chimes Quadrille, both referencing works by Charles Dickens), Camille Schubert, and all six of J. T. Stone's Assortimens Quadrilles Nationales--not often seen as a complete collection. Cover art by John Brandard is found on nine different titles. The album contains eleven full-color illustrated covers; one multi-color text only cover; two black and sepia-tone covers; three black and white pictorial covers; eleven black and white text-only covers (including the six J. T. Stone compositions). Several of the covers bear the signature of Lady Cornwallis and are dated 1858. A complete list of the sheet music in the album can be had by contacting oldimprints.com.

        [Ukiyoe Album of Kabuki Actors]....

(circa1850). A beautiful Japanese colour woodblock concertina album of actors. 28 leaves featuring 16 full page woodblocks, 5 diptychs and 2 leaves with 2 images on each. 18.2 x 12.5cm. Some occasional insect damage and joins at fore edges professionally repaired with wheat starch paste. A little insect damage on covers. A very attractive album. Utagawa Hirosada, or Gosotei Hirosada as he was also known, was an exceptional printmaker active in the period 1826 - 1863 in Osaka. He is believed to have died in 1865. In this album are 20 of his own prints, with the others attributed to the other artists. Fans of kabuki eagerly sought his prints which, in some cases, as shown in this album include the names of the actors. On others, due to the restrictions placed on actors by the authorities at the time, the actors remained unnamed. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 136632)....

Australian Geography, with the Shores of the Pacific And those of the Indian Ocean...

Sydney: J. Moore, George Street, 1850. Octavo, folding frontispiece map; in original attractive patterned cloth. Scarce first edition of a pioneering Australian geography textbook, inscribed by the author Sir Thomas Mitchell, renowned explorer and Surveyor-General of New South Wales. The fine world map is by the Sydney engraver John Carmichael. The book was published in Sydney by the prominent bookseller Jeremiah Moore and was specifically designed for use in New South Wales schools. This work privileges Australia's location relative to Asia and the Pacific; indeed the ADB notes of Mitchell's textbook: 'this work must have been one of the first to place Australia in the centre of the world'.Printed by Robert Barr of York Street, the work was published by Jeremiah Moore, a prosperous Sydney bookseller and stationer active between 1849-1896.Mitchell's textbook features a locally printed frontispiece world map bearing the details of the engraver, John Carmichael of Kent Street, North Sydney. Moore published several maps during his lifetime and clearly did a good trade in this regard. A printed slip tipped to the half-title of this volume directs readers to Jones' map of New South Wales and Victoria, to be had from the George Street bookstore. Lower margin of title-page a little marked, light scattered foxing; joints repaired. A good copy.

Speeches of Sir William Molesworth... on the Bill for the Better Government of the Australian Colonies.

London: James Ridgway, 1850. Octavo, 76 pp., original brown printed wrappers bound in, owner's name and stamp for "W.B. Rhodes", in red crushed morocco by Sangorski. A heated address to parliament delivered by Sir William Molesworth, a radical English M.P. who significantly contributed to the demise of transportation to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land. From the library of a prominent whaling entrepreneur who first sailed for New South Wales in 1834.Author of the famous 1837 report condemning transportation, Molesworth consistently advocated political self-determination for the colonies. In this speech he speaks in stark terms of the consequences of denying freedom to the Australian colonies while continuing convict transportation en-masse. He eloquently surmises their frustration: 'many of the colonists, unfortunately believing their rulers to be selfish and faithless, have begun to despair, and in despair ask one another how they can redress their grievances'. Molesworth then warns that the Canadian rebellion and agitation at the Cape Colony are openly discussed in Australia as viable alternatives to the present status quo.Directed against recalcitrant members of the Colonial Office, Molesworth's speech draws upon the British loss of American colonies to stress the need for urgent change: 'we ought to maintain our colonial empire; because we knew that discontent prevailed throughout our colonies; because we believed that a train of errors, similar to that which lost us the United States, was endangering the colonial possessions that remained... because we despaired of any such reform coming from the Colonial Office.'This copy was owned by the South Seas whaler and New Zealand settler William Barnard Rhodes, by the time this work was published having established his reputation as the "millionaire of Wellington" Old tape repairs marking the wrappers, but an excellent copy.

Speeches of Sir William Molesworth, Bart. M.P. in the House of Commons during the Session of 1850, on the Bill for the Better Government of the Australian Colonies.

No date. Late Edo period. Japanese manuscript on 49 folded leaves bound in traditional four hole stab binding, patterned blue paper covers, only a small section of paper title label present, light staining lower section of leaves and on covers, some insect damage in text and on covers without significant loss. Contents are generally good. 28 x 19.5cm. This manuscript is a collection of the following three different Japanese documents:1. ????????? [Summary on the United States of North America].2. ??????????????? [Special News in 1850 Translated into Japanese in Nagasaki].3. ????????? [Proposal on Coastal Defence].An overall title for this collection Ibuns? ??? or Collection of Exotic Tales is written on the inside back cover. The first document ????????? [Summary on the United States of North America] chronicles the events during the forming and expansion of the United States of America, starting with the discovery of North America by Columbus in 1492, although strangely in this document, the year given for Columbus's arrival is Mei? 2, which is 1493. This document mentions the arrival in 1845 of an American whaling ship [Manhattan] from New York to Uraga with the rescued Japanese castaways aboard though again the date is out by one year, the year given being K?ka 1 which is 1844. It also talks about the operations of many Western whaling ships near Japan. This document also discusses the geography, climate, minerals, animals, and products of the United States commenting on the many "Ariguri" or alligators as well as less surprisingly the number of steam engines and steam boats. The document ends with the arrival in Japan of Commodore Perry with the four black ships in 1853. The second document in this collection ??????????????? [Special News in 1850 Translated into Japanese in Nagasaki] is a foreign affairs report written in 1850 presented to the Edo government. Betsudan f?setsusho ?????, such as these, were reports on foreign affairs made by the Dutch colonial government in Batavia which were presented to the Edo government when the Dutch ships came to Nagasaki. Since Japan was closed to most of world at this time, Betsudan f?setsusho ????? functioned as an extremely important source of information on foreign affairs for the Edo government. This interesting report covers events in the Netherlands, Dutch East Indies, China, Macau, British East Indies, Europe, Egypt, and North America. The document is full of interesting pieces of world news. Some notable events include:Mention of a rumour that the United States had stated the intention of trading with Japan, predicting the visit of Commodore Perry only three years later. Report of the imperial ceremony for the Royal succession in Amsterdam on 20th April 1849;A poor harvest in Java and the measures the colonial government took to prevent starvation among the locals. Notice of the Governor of Hong Kong Sir George Bonham's intention to visit Shanghai and Beijing, to negotiate with the Chinese government to try to make them fulfil their promises. This section also includes details of British warships operating off the East Indies and near China. Notice that the Chinese Emperor, Daoguang, died in February 1850 and that the prince had succeeded the throne. Report that the Governor of Macau, João Maria Ferreira do Amaral had cancelled the Qing government's ability to collect ground rent in Macau, that he had declared Macau a Portuguese colony in June 1849 and that in retribution the Governor was attacked and assassinated on the 5th of July by Chinese men who cut his head and a hand/s off.Notice that on the 8th of June, 1849 a six month cease-fire in the war between Denmark and Germany took place. A report stating that many foreigners, especially those from Europe, were coming to California for gold. The third and last report ????????? [Proposal on Coastal Defence] is a proposal to the Edo government about coastal defence by Ohanawa Sh?suke. Ohanawa Sh?suke was hatamoto, a direct retainer of the shogun part of his duties being a guard for the shogun. Ohanawa wrote this proposal as a reaction to the arrival of the American fleet in 1853 which eventually would lead to the opening up of Japan to the Western countries. He was against trade with foreign countries and argued that foreign ships be expelled. He believed that the Edo government should use this crisis as a chance to radically reform the government and recruit talented people for higher posts.
