ROUPELL, Arabella E.
London W. Nicol Shakespeare Press 1849 - First edition. Large folio (59 x 46 cm), subscription list, pictorial lithographed title, 8 lithographed plates and large floral tailpiece, all hand-coloured and heightened with gum arabic, modern green half morocco gilt preserving original green morocco label, a fine copy. Spectacular South African flora. Roupell (1817-1914) was married to an East India Company official In 1843, her husband was posted to the Cape for a period of service leave and she accompanied him. During her two-year stay in South Africa Roupell whiled away her leisure hours by painting the local flowers that happened to catch her eye. A visitor to the Cape, Nathaniel Wallich, who was at that time in charge of the Calcutta Botanical Garden, and happened to be a guest at the same Cape Town hotel as the Roupells, was struck by the quality of her work. The Roupells returned to Madras in 1845 where Arabella continued her botanical painting. When Wallich retired to London from Calcutta in 1846, he persuaded her to allow him to take along some of her paintings to show to Sir William Jackson Hooker. Hooker was delighted with her work and with Arabella's botanist brother-in-law, George Roupell, chose ten of the plates for publication. Having received the blessing of both Hooker and Wallich, the plates were handed to the eminent Victorian lithographer, Paul Gauci, who prepared the illustrations for the printer W. Nicol of the Shakespeare Press on Pall Mall. The descriptive text accompanying the plates was provided by William Henry Harvey, the Irish botanist. One hundred s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Large copper engraved map 53x46 cm, includes ten insets; with the distance scales indicated both for the main map and the insets. Original fold marks, a tear neatly repaired, otherwise very good. Very rare interesting map of the Kodiak Archipelago issued in the Otchet Rossiisko-Amerikanskoi Kompanii za odin god, po 1 yanvarya 1849 goda [i.e. Annual Report of the Russian American Company for one year, up to 1 January, 1849]. The map represents the most accomplished survey of the archipelago at the time, with detailed and thorough mapping of its northern part, namely of Afognak, Shuyak, Marmot, Raspberry, Spruce, and other islands, and northern and central regions of the Kodiak Island; the Trinity Islands and Chirikov Island (southern part of the archipelago) are also mapped very precisely. The southern part of Kodiak island is outlined, but no details apart from the main capes are given. The map indicates the main capes, bays, mountains, native and Russian settlements - the latter with villages ('seleniya') distinguished from outposts ('odinochki'); depths are indicated in sazhens. The insets give detailed views of 1) a part of the Shelikof Strait; 2) Sitkalidak Strait; 3) southern part of the Kodiak Island; 4) south-eastern part of the Kodiak Island; 5) Ugak Bay; 6) southern part of the Afognak Island; 7) Spruce Island; 8) Woody Island; 9) Chiniak Bay; 10) Chiniak Cape. The map was prepared during the time of Mikhail Tebenkov (1802-1872) as the governor of Russian America and the Chief Administrator of the Russian American-Company (1845-1850). LEIDEN HOLLAND THE NETHERLANDS: Manuscript. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. On offer is the fascinating, original 1849 through 1850s journal and letter copy book of the renowned Dutch instrument maker Julius Theodoor Leopold Hoefftcke. Born on 12 March 1800 in Berlin he moved to Leiden at age 26 and within two years he was appointed as the instrument maker of Leiden University. He supplied the academic world with instruments until his death in 1875. After which his grandson took over the company and moved to England. The book is a superb source for researchers and historians as a rare insight into the world of Dutch instrument making which was a growth industry and for which the Dutch were ferociously proud. This book contains all the financial agreements of Mr. Hoefftcke around 1850s to 1860s. For every individual borrowing the instruments or goods he noted how much should have been paid, when it had to be paid and once paid he confirmed it in his book. From his letters one could conclude that he did not only loan out his goods, but also sold them. The book shows that the financial agreements do not only limit themselves to the University of Leiden and in fact his instruments were shipped long distances. We note a letter shows that instruments were sent to J. Pohl, who was an instrument maker located in the Hague since 1820. Besides the financial agreements, there are also some formal letters to the clients and suppliers. Based on the letters one could say that some, or perhaps all of the letters, were just a written copy of an original letters. Many letters point out the author wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

MISHAWAKA, WOLF CREEK, MARSHALL COUNTY INDIANA IN: (1849). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Offered is a super, original manuscript diary dated August, 1849 through to a final tragic entry in April, 1854. The diary was handwritten by an Indiana surveyor, farmer, politician and engineer who worked throughout Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. [While the 64 page book lacks any identifying signatures or inscription a tucked in scrap of what appears to be original poetry dated 1840 bears the name of Jeremiah Gould. The final 1854 entry is signed in a different hand with the initials V.G. likely the son Vernon which we believe adds credence to Jeremiah's authorship though more research should be done.] The diary is a fascinating and a superb telling of the author's personal life and times as he writes not just of what has happened but also his thoughts about the family's future. We learn that it is a hard life given his family suffered many attacks of fever and disease and a super portrait of pre Civil War America and there is so much to it: he and fellow surveyors find an old Indian Battle ground while on a survey; political commentary about the Whig Party, Daniel Webster including his own ambitions in local politics as he is elected to office. His children he writes about many times - Vernon, Marietta, and Robert. For example one of his sons Vernon leaves to study medicine. The town of Rochester is a focus of commentary often along with Mishawaka, Wolf Creek and Marshall County, and the Yellow River. In fact there is a great entry about crossing the river by horse. He writes about surveyi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Spine title] Railway Structures
Printed by William Clowes and Sons for Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1849. Atlas vol. only, with large hand-coloured, folding map of coal and iron deposits and 78 lithographic plates mounted on stubs, the great majority folding and some hand-coloured, narrow strip torn from fore-margin of last plate (not affecting image), small cancelled library stamp of the French Ministry of the Marine and Colonies to title, map and occasionally on the margins of the plates, pp. iv, folio, contemporary French purple calf backed boards, spine gilt, some wear, and fading to the boards, good. A magnificent suite of early Victorian technical drawings. The Royal Commission was established to investigate the properties and uses of cast iron, following the collapse of Robert Stephenson's girder bridge carrying the Chester & Holyhead railway over the Dee at Chester. Experiments were carried out to determine the effects of moving loads on iron bars and the respective merits of cast- and wrought-iron. Many notable engineers were involved, both as part of the Commission (e.g. Henry Cubitt and George Rennie) and as witnesses (J.A.Rastrick, William Fairbairn, Joseph Glynn, I.K.Brunel and others). The plates are numbered in different sequences, and several of the places are multiples (e.g. 1 and 1a-c). There is no plate 7 to Appendix III but it is not called for in list of plates.

Roberts, David, Scottish painter (1796-1864)
Fitzroy Street, 15 March, 1849. 8vo. 1 p. on double leaf. To his son-in-law Henry Bicknell, making arrangements to meet: "I have unfortunately accepted an invitation to dine with Lord Tenterden on Wednesday, had it been an other I would have endeavoured to get off - as it is I have done as you desired an pop'd Marochetti into the fire. With the exception of that and Saturday I am disengaged the rest of the week [...]". - In a postscript, he adds that "Turner called on Monday to say he would dine with you tomorrow having mistaken the day - he is to dine with your Governor [Henry Bicknell's father, the art collector Elhanan Bicknell] on Saturday". - Roberts enjoyed a close and warm relationship with his daughter and her husband, no doubt a compensation for his own unhappy marriage.

Anonymous; Anonymous
(England): 1849. Octavo. 5ff. Verse manuscript with original watercolor illustrations, including a full-page cover title and title-page and sixteen vignettes throughout. The text tells the tale of Timothy Brown, who is introduced as "a wild little lad" who constantly tears his clothes and searches for ways to spend his days in idle pursuits. He is coerced by a passing sailor to join the Royal Navy as a cabin boy without informing his family. Once at sea, however, he discovers that the work is hard, and he hatches a plan to desert by hiding in the captain's launch. He is discovered and duly flogged, but he gradually accepts his role and resolves to become a better sailor. Eventually, he reconciles with his family, becomes a hero for his valorous conduct during a sea battle with the French fleet, and is promoted to Captain. Although such stories of reformed wayward youth were common tools for shaping the morality of children, this particular story does not appear to be drawn from a known source. The text is augmented throughout by colorful watercolors executed in a competent folk-art style. Some faint spotting and light wear along edges of leaves and along extremities of illustrated blue wrappers, else a fine example of a fragile work, housed in a cloth chemise.

Edward Earl of Clarendon; notes by Bishop Warburton
Oxford-Oxford University Press, 1849. Book. Edward Earl of Clarendon's contemporaryHistory of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England together with an Historical View of the Affairs of Ireland for the first timecarefully printed from the original MS. preserved in the Bodleian Library to which are subjoined the notes of Bishop Warburton. In seven volumes complete. Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) was an English historian and statesman, and grandfather of two English monarchs, Mary II and Queen Anne. During the Civil War, Hyde served in the King's council as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and was one of the more moderate figures in the royalist camp. By 1645 his moderation had alienated him from the King, and he was made guardian to the Prince of Wales, with whom he fled to Jersey in 1646. He spent his time in exile working on the History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, his classic account of the English Civil War. (The proceeds from this book's publication were instrumental in building the Clarendon Building at Oxford. )Hyde was not closely involved with Charles II's attempts to regain the throne in 1649 to 1651. Hyde rejoined the exiled king in the latter year, and soon became his chief advisor; Charles named him Lord Chancellor in 1658. On the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he returned to England with the King and became even closer to the royal family through the marriage of his daughter, Anne, to the king's brother James, Duke of York, the heir-presumptive. Their two daughters, Mary II and Queen Anne would each one day reign in their own rig … [Click Below for Full Description]

STURT, Charles.
London: T. & W. Boone, 1849. Two volumes, octavo, with the large separately-published folding map by Arrowsmith cased as a matching third volume; with a folding map in the text, two frontispieces and 14 plates (six plates coloured, several after John Gould and S.T. Gill); a fine set in a charming Morrell binding, for both text volumes and map case, of half olive morocco and marbled boards, top edges of the text volumes gilt. One of the most desirable books of inland exploration: only rarely seen with the separately published map, as here.Sturt's last and most important expedition, into the harsh interior of the continent, was one for which he had petitioned over many years. His goal was the discovery of an inland sea which he was convinced he could locate. Setting out along the Murray and Darling, Sturt travelled north to Preservation Creek in the Grey Range, where he was trapped for nearly six oppressive months after summer heat dried up all water in the surrounding country. After heavy rains he moved further north, trekking some five hundred miles into the centre of the continent. The party of fifteen then struggled across Sturt's Stony Desert only to be thwarted by the sand ridges of the Simpson Desert, forcing Sturt to retreat to Fort Grey and thence to Adelaide. The party suffered greatly from scurvy, losing its second-in-command, and Sturt himself survived on the return journey only by using Aboriginal foods. On his return Sturt was lauded as a national hero of extraordinary courage.
