John Gould
This remarkable ornithology lithograph with hand-finished color is from the esteemed John Gould’s Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Hummingbirds published in London between 1849 and 1887.Family of Hummingbirds undoubtedly featured some of Gould’s most desired plates. Of particular note was the use of gold and silver leaf to create the appearance of the natural iridescence of the hummingbird’s feathers. The birds are also featured amidst intricately drawn fauna that accentuates the beauty of the composition.John Gould created nearly 3000 hand-colored plates of animals in his extensive career. Gould gained much of his knowledge by observation and experience and contributed greatly to scientific knowledge at the time. Gould is believed to have done the original sketches for all of the plates. He utilized many talented artists to help create the finished lithograph including his wife Elizabeth Coxen Gould, Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf, William Hart, and H. C. Richter. Even at the time of publication, Gould’s plates were very expensive and only sold to a small set of subscribers. Due to the limited subscriber list, the plates remain rare and of high value for collectors today. --- The work is in excellent condition overall. Some of the plates may be a few minor imperfections or negligible text offset to be expected with age, but generally very clean. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.

In Göttingen begann er i. [Click Below for Full Description]

Washington Irving
New York: G.P. Putnam, 1849. Very Good: some foxing and seems slightly cocked: illustrations (sorony and major lithos) intact: spots on front: bibliophilic information and auction information about this particular volume pasted neatly into front on board and facing. Very nice "special" first as listed in auction reports pasted inside front: printed on heavier paper than the ordinary, contains lithographs on very heavy paper, gold-tooled cover decoration rather than blind-tooled. Some foxing throughout but still a charming representative of what many consider the first truly American author. Very Good Condition; 12mo (6 1/4" X 4 1/2"); green publisher's cloth with gilt Rip van Winkle and his dog on front, blind-tooled image on back outlined with geometric flourish: embossed geometric design on spine with gilt lettering of title and publisher: occasional foxing: auction notes carefully and neatly pasted inside front and on facing: Sarony and Major Lithographs: "A Book of the Hudson" by Washington Irving: "A Book of the Hudson collected from the Various Works of Diedrich Knickerbocker. An excerpt from an article by Audubon expert Ron Flynn; Following the success of the Imperial Folio edition of mammals, another octavo sized publication, by the Audubons, called the Quadrupeds of North America, and consisting of 155 different mammal prints, was first published from 1849-54, as the 1st edition. Hüttenbrenner, Anselm, Komponist und Musikkritiker (1794-1868)
Graz, Juni. Titel (mit montierten Überklebungen), 6 num. SS. auf gefalt. Bögen. Tinte auf Papier. Geheftet. Qu.-Folio. "After his wife's death in 1848, he gradually sank into the habits of a recluse [...] His compositions include operas, sacred and secular vocal music, symphonies, overtures, chamber music, keyboard music and solo songs; few of his works were published, though most survive in MS. Many of his songs are melodious and have accompaniments that reflect the text; they appear to have been modelled on Beethoven's songs, rather than those of Schubert" (New Grove VIII, 829). [Click Below for Full Description]

KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI
First edition, rare, that can be translated under the title Sketch of Hokusai, volume 14. 15 volumes have actually appeared covering the work of Hokusai. The first was published in 1815 and the last posthumously in 1878. The final volume is considered apocryphal by some art historians. the Volume on 30 double sheets contains about 39 engravings of which 12 on double page, there are several animated landscapes, real and mythological animals. There are 3 colors, flesh, gray and black.Acordon volume, connected by a seam. brown blanket with wave print imitating a fabric, with title tag. A trace of wetness on the flat bottom flats. Friction. Loose seams, a flying thread. Interior very fresh and clean. The volume was not printed on paper murier like most copies that we meet but on a Japanese paper thin and shiny. Nice copy. The hokusai manga deals with various subjects, scenes of daily life, but also war scenes, also scenes of typically Japanese legends, animals and flowers. "It is generally considered that, after a contemporary of intense production, Hokusai selected his sketches very carefully, and even redrawed a number of them, arranging them in the order we know them today. on page of different sketches on a given board was actually decided by the engravers and editors, not by Hokusai himself. " Wikipedia. It will be recalled that the technique of Japanese printmaking is very close to the original drawing, since the drawing was inked on a piece of wood that the engraver was digging, following precisely the lines of the drawing, itself destroyed by this surgery. RICHARD J. O'FARRELL
BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD: (1849). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a super, historic, original 1849 manuscript letter handwritten by Richard J. O'Farrell, addressed to James Bell, care of Abraham Bell & Son, Merchants, in New York City. The 7-1/2" x 9-5/8" or so one page stampless folded letter has blue "BALTIMORE/Md." postmark and blue "5" in oval rate handstamp dated at 241 Ann Street, Baltimore, Md., March 2, 1849, deals with Mr. O'Farrell an Irish immigrant who, like many 1000s of other Irishmen who have come to America to escape the awful times created by the potato famine, desire and seek work. The addressee, James Bell, was the son of Abraham Bell, (1778-1856), a prominent Irish born merchant in New York City, who had an extensive import & export shipping business, especially in shipping cotton to England. In 1844, the firm became known as Abraham Bell & Son. During the potato famine of the 1840s, they transported thousands of immigrants from Ireland. The writer of this letter, Richard J. O'Farrell, was an Irish immigrant, probably one of those who Bell helped bring to America. Great content, in which O'Farrell writes of his inability to obtain employment in Baltimore, noting that "there are plenty of Emigrants here upon the same errand equally unsuccessful owing to the depression of Trade", and complaining that even the Irish-American "Hibernian Society" provided no help to him. He was unsuccessful in getting a berth on a ship bound for California and the Gold Rush: 'but there are only 5 vessels leaving from Baltimore to California, and all the Seamen, Cooks & S … [Click Below for Full Description]

The present volume is comprised of a history of New York by Belden, written with the aid of the "vast number of statistical details" collected in the course of constructing the model.
