Washington Irving
Very Good: some foxing and seems slightly cocked: illustrations (sorony and major lithos) intact: spots on front: bibliophilic information and auction information about this particular volume pasted neatly into front on board and facing. Very nice "special" first as listed in auction reports pasted inside front: printed on heavier paper than the ordinary, contains lithographs on very heavy paper, gold-tooled cover decoration rather than blind-tooled. Some foxing throughout but still a charming representative of what many consider the first truly American author. Introduces Rip Van Winkle and continues the legendary story-telling of Diedrich Knickerbocker. Very Good Condition; 12mo (6 1/4" X 4 1/2"); green publisher's cloth with gilt Rip van Winkle and his dog on front, blind-tooled image on back outlined with geometric flourish: embossed geometric design on spine with gilt lettering of title and publisher: occasional foxing: auction notes carefully and neatly pasted inside front and on facing: Sarony and Major Lithographs: "A Book of the Hudson" by Washington Irving: "A Book of the Hudson collected from the Various Works of Diedrich Knickerbocker. Edited by Geoffrey Crayon": New York: G.P. Putnam: John F. Trow, Printer and Stereotyper: 1849. RAREA1849HPRA. [Attributes: First Edition]

1849 KENTUCKY CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION SIGNATURE BOOK with SIGNATURES of 95 COUNTY REPRESENTATIVES, plus Sergeant at Arms, Reporters, etc. The Constitutional Convention signatory Sign In notebook was owned by THOMAS N. LINDSEY, member of the notable LINDSEY FAMILY of FRANKFORT KENTUCKY. Thomas N. Lindsey was the Representative of Franklin County, Kentucky. His signature is on the backside of the first page. The Signature Book is 3x5 inches and filled with blank paper. Lacking the front cover, however the spine covering and rear cover are present, as are all the inner pages. It appears likely that Thomas N. Lindsey was responsible for getting the signatures of the attending Representatives and others at the Kentucky Constitutional Convention of 1849 (that led to the adoption of the Constitution of 1850). He signed his name clearly on the verso of the first page, and I believe also on the back cover though that signature is very difficult to see. Though the notebook pages were blank, Lindsey wrote 3 numbers on a page up to number 100, leaving space by each number where Representatives signed in and identified themselves by county. 94 Representatives signed in and most wrote the county they represented below their signature, some also wrote the city they were from. The spaces beside numbers 95-100 are blank. However, Thomas N. Lindsey, the representative from Franklin County, signed at the front as noted above, meaning that this notebook contains a total of 95 signatures of the Constitutional Convention Representatives. Many of the signatures are accompanied with handwritten … [Click Below for Full Description]

Utah]: Young, Brigham
[Salt Lake City, 1849. Small printed paper slip, measuring about 2 x 3 3/4 inches. Overall condition is excellent. No serial number. Blanks not filled in, unsigned and unstamped. This small piece of paper money printed by the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City is an example of the earliest recorded printing done in Utah. Called a "Valley Note" by Alvin E. Rust, this form of paper currency was printed in several denominations, using a font of script type of the style used for calling cards. McMurtrie quotes a passage from a manuscript history of Brigham Young which describes the interesting circumstances under which this paper money was printed: "They had gold dust, but many refused to take it, as there was a waste in weighing it for exchange. To meet this want, we employed brother John Kay to coin the dust, but upon trial he broke all the crucibles and could not proceed. I then offered the gold dust back to the people, but they did not want it. I then told them we would issue paper till the gold dust could be coined. The Municipal Council agreed to have such a currency, and appointed myself and President Heber C. Kimball and bishop N.K. Whitney to issue it. The first bill, for one dollar, was issued on the first of this month [January 1849]. The bills were signed by Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, & Thomas Bullock, clerk." The copy in hand is not signed, stamped, or filled out. "It is definite enough that the first use of the press by the Mormon settlers was in January, 1849, for the production of paper currency. Furthermore, it is gratifyingly definite that the firs … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leopardi, Giacomo
Felice Le Monnier, 1849. Prima edizione dell'epistolario, in gran parte originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

The novel is based on the true story of the Pendle witches, who were executed in 1612 for causing harm by witchcraft. Ainsworth based his story largely on the official account of the Lancashire witch trials written by the clerk to the court, Thomas Potts, first published in 1613 under the title The Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster. HENNEQUIN, Victor Antoine.
Coimbra, Imprensa de E. Trovão, 1849.. First and only Edition in Portuguese. 8°, unbound with self-cover (foxing to covers, defects along spine). Woodcut factotum initial on p. [3]. Overall in good condition. 26 pp., (1 blank l.). *** First and only Portuguese translation of this highly interesting pamphlet on communism as practiced in Paris during the revolutionary year of 1848. Hennequin adopts the literary conceit of having a Chinese mandarin, Kao-Tseu, walk the streets of Paris, seeking information from workers on what communism is and describing what he sees. Kao-Tseu's observations are reported in three letters from Paris, dated July 5, 10 and 27, 1848. While the letters do not describe the communist insurrection and furious street fighting of June 24-26, they do convey Parisians' resulting sense of disillusionment with the social and political experimentation of 1848. Hennequin (1816-1854) was a successful Parisian avocat and author of several legal works. After a meeting with the noted economist and socialist Victor Considerant, Hennequin became a prominent proselytizer for Fourierism, lecturing throughout France and contributing frequently to La démocratie pacifique. We have not been able to trace any other editions of this pamphlet, in any language. It is possible that the letters were originally published in a French serial publication--perhaps La démocratie pacifique--and that the edition we offer is the only separately published one. *** Gonçalves Rodrigues, A tradução em Portugal 6807; cf. 6992: text reprinted in the Revolução de Setembro (Lisbon) of Septe … [Click Below for Full Description]

CONSTITUTION OF DENMARK - - [THE VERY FIRST CONSTITUTION OF DENMARK]
Kjøbenhavn, Jens Hostrup Schultz, 1849. 4to. As extracted, without backstrip. Fine and clean. (1)-20, (4) pp. ¶ The rare first appearance of the first Constitutional Act of the Kingdom of Denmark, applying equally in Denmark, Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, being one of the oldest constitutions in the world. Its adoption in 1849 ended an absolute monarchy and introduced democracy with several fundamental civil rights such as habeas corpus (a person can report an unlawful detention or imprisonment to a court), private property rights and freedom of speech which all remain in the current constitution."The common foundation of the constitutions of Denmark and Iceland was laid in 1849, after a spate of European revolutions the year before, spreading from Sicily to France, Germany, and much of the rest of Europe except Russia, Spain, and Scandinavia. The European Spring of 1848, as it became known, was quickly crushed by reactionary forces. In Denmark, however, it led to peaceful reform. The Danish monarch, King Fredrik VII, acceded to liberal demands for seats in the cabinet and for a new constitution to be drawn up by a Constituent Assembly elected in the fall of 1848. The assembly had 158 representatives of whom 114 were elected directly by the people and 44 were appointed by the King (38 from Denmark, five from Iceland, and one from the Faroe Islands both of which were part of the Danish realm). In session from October 1848 until May 1849, the Constituent Assembly passed a new constitution that was signed by the King on 5 June 1849. Near Fort Kearny, Ne, 1849. [1]p. plus integral address leaf, addressed on verso. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Moderate soiling and dampstaining, primarily to second leaf. Small paper loss to a few folds, affecting a few words of text. Still, quite legible. Good. Written from the banks of the Platte River in Nebraska, this letter typifies correspondence sent home from the Oregon Trail, reporting on game, grass, Indian encounters, and deaths on the Trail. Given the date and the destination. Fred Snyder was a Forty-Niner, headed West to the California gold fields. He writes: "I have just time to inform you that we have travelled about 310 miles from St. Joseph and 800 from St. Louis and are now encamped upon the Platte River between Fort Kearney and Fort Laramie. We are now within 16 days travel from the latter fort. Game is abundant but the grass is poor. I shall take every opportunity to write to you, but I have not heard a word from home since I left nor do I expect to until my arrival in California. Do not forget to direct letters for me to San Francisco by the way of Chagres & Panama. We meet Indians every day and are now in the Paunee country. By tomorrow we shall be among the Sioux. Nicholas Boismenue of Cahokia accidentally shot himself a few days ago and died immediately. He was buried on the Big Blue River. Regards to all." Kean, Charles
Charles John Kean (1811-1868) was destined to usher Shakespeare into the forefront of the Victorian public consciousness. His father, Edmund Kean (1787-1833), had been lauded as a restorer of Shakespeare, garnering success through his passionate portrayals of Hamlet, Lear, and others. Charles would prove an antithesis to his father's Romantic point of view, instead favoring scholarship and self-control over pathos and impulsivity, and aimed to 'satisfy the Victorian audience's appetite for instruction disguised as entertainment and accompanied by magnificent trimmings' (Finkel, '"A True and Perfect Mirror.": costumes for Charles Kean's revivals of Shakespeare's plays, 1852-1859',Dress, 14 (1), p. 7).He would succeed in creating a national theatre through Shakespearean revival. In 1848, Kean was appointed director of royal theatricals at Windsor Castle, which led to his management of the Princess's Theatre in London, in the next decade. Kean won Victoria and Albert's favour with ease and, subsequently, his fame grew. Victoria's admiration of Kean's appreciation of realism and historical detail was often noted in her journals: 'Shakespeare's historical Tragedy of "King John" was admirably given [by Kean's company] . What a noble splendid Play it is & what a man Shakespeare was! What knowledge of human nature, - what language, - what poetry, - what power of portraying characters! The dresses were magnificent & strictly correct, & the grouping, in spite of the small stage & space was beautiful. Kean acted admirably & so did Mrs Kean.' Spine loose and light wear to extremties, internally fine and clean. 86 pp. ¶ First edition of Grimm's important work which he considered one of the very earliest to introduce cremation to the modern western world. Here Grimm traces cremation through the history of Western civilization and illustrated its aesthetic and ennobling benefits with a host of examples from various cultures, which to him, represented "stages in the refinement of humankind". "While he described cremation as "progress in the mental education of the people". He dedicated the bulk of his speech to funerary rituals among ancient Greeks and Romans, whom he revered. Grimm focused on ethnological descriptions of cremation practices, but he also mentioned practical advantages, like improvising hygiene, saving space, and making the transport of remains easier. To preempt potential objections about the Christian belief in resurrection, he assured his audience that the physical product of incineration and decomposition were identical." Waller's pioneering work marked the starting point for the neuron theory and provided an ingenious technique for studying neuroanatomical pathways and connections." (Venita Jay, Augustus Volney Waller)."Waller showed that if glosso-pharyngeal and hypoglossal nerves are severed, the outer segment, containing the axis-cylinders cut off from the cells, undergoes generation, the central stump remaining intact for a long period. From this he inferred that nerve-cells nourish nerve-fibres." (G&M: 1266)."To every student of pathology, Waller's name is synonymous with ''Wallerian degeneration.'' Using a simple technique of cutting the nerves of a frog's tongue, Waller found that the distal stump would soon degenerate, while the proximal stump remained relatively intact. From his observations, the astute Waller inferred that nerve cells nourished the nerve fibers. This important work, entitled ''Experiments on the Section of the Glossopharyngeal and Hypoglossal Nerves of the Frog and Observations of the Alterations Produced Thereby in the Structure of Their Primitive Fibers,'' was published in … [Click Below for Full Description]

First printing of the paper in which Fizeau describes how he produced the first terrestrial measurement of the speed of light, using a rapidly rotating toothed wheel to break a light signal into continuous pulses whose speed could then be estimated. That was the most accurate measurement to-date of the speed of light. This method was later used by Albert Michelson."Fizeau was not satisfied merely with determining the relative velocities of light. He wanted to measure with some precision the absolute velocity. In 1849 he had conceived an ingenious mechanism that would enable him to achieve his goal: a large toothed wheel was spun rapidly about its axis, and a beam of light sent through the spaces between the teeth was reflected back to its source by a fixed mirror. When the wheel was rotated rapidly enough, the intermittent light rays returning from the mirror intersected the path of the teeth and thus became invisible to the observer stationed behind the wheel. As the mechanism was turned faster and faster, the light reappeared and disappeared alternately. The time required for the light to travel through the carefully measured distance was a simple function of the angular displacement of the wheel. In 1849 Fizeau made a trial of his new method between his father’s house at Suresnes and Montmartre. The figure he … [Click Below for Full Description]
