Anon.
1849. Manuscript sales ledger of gunmaker David Ridley Hodgson, whose gunsmith shop was at the historical Middle Street in Ripon, in which is recorded the transactions of his predecessors, and which features numerous prominent clients including nobles, politicians, and leading religious men. Folio. 365 pages, numbered in manuscript. Original vellum binding and marbled endpapers. Volume measures approximately 16,5 x 40 x 4,5 cm. Wear and evidence of in-shop use to boards, otherwise in very good condition, a rare survivor from the former Middle Street of Ripon. David Ridley Hodgson was recorded as a gun maker in Ripon, Yorkshire, from at least 1868 to 1905. He operated from a shop on Middle Street as early as 1868, and possibly before that. From approximately 1883 to 1886 his specific address was known to be 8 Middle Street. Between about 1887 and 1890 William Hodgson owned the business, and by 1901 he moved to 7 Queen Street, as Middle Street was being demolished. He operated from Queen Street until at least 1905. The business evidently stayed in the family for several generations. From 1955 to 1966 the business traded as R. C. Hodgson. Lasting over a century, the firm closed in 1986. The present volume precedes David Hodgson's known history as a gunmaker on Middle Street, however his signature is found on a tax receipt dated 1868, pertaining to a Middle Street address, and affixed to the front endpaper of the volume, which suggests that the volume may have been made by his father or a relation from whom he would have learned the trade and assumed the business ownership. Thomas Kirke
George Bell, 1849. No marks or inscriptions. No creasing to covers or to spine. Very clean very tight pages with minimal tanning. Full leather boards with fine embossing and some surface rubbing, slightly darkened towards the fore edge. Intact gilt lettering to spine with raised bands and embossed repeating motif. All page edges gilt with spectacularly beautiful intricate design to the gilt. Attached silk bookmark ribbon. 152pp. These essays on morals and philosophy described as inherent and desirable in the English Gentleman were written by the author for his two younger brothers and subsequently published in early editions of the Theologian. The work is described as an 1849 re-print and is probably the closest in existence to the real first edition. Extremely scarce.

London: Wm S Orr & Co., 1849. London: Wm S Orr & Co.,, 1849 A good copy of the 2nd Edition in 2 volumes, in contemporary half leather bindings with 124 hand coloured plates by H Noel Humphreys. The bindings are half morocco leather with marbled boards. The spines have raised bands with gilt compartments and gilt titles. All page edges gilt. The bindings are sound, but with a lot of scuffing, particularly to the marbling, and wear - most obvious to the corners. Vol I has an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown with the initials GTL and a bookplate of Sir Arthur Clay to the fep. There is a small round stamp of Hendon Public Libraries to the title pages of both volumes and both have a library marking to the verso of the title. Both volumes are complete: Vol I: title page; plate list; preface; text with errata and corrigenda, index and alphabetical list 258pp with 56 plates. Vol II: title page; plate list; text with addenda and corrigenda and alphabetical list 268pp with 68 plates. Hendon Libraries have been relatively modest in their stamping: each plate has a small (1 cm) stamp to the back, and there is a round stamp in the bottom margin of every 50th text page and at the end. Contents are generally clean with the odd mark or spot and the plates are in very good condition overall. The odd page corner has been turned over at some point. Vol I has splitting at the front endpaper joint, but the book is currently sound, and the initial pages have slightly crinkled side edges. PRESCOTT, WILLIAM
London: Richard Bentley, 1850, 1849, 1849. Sixth Edition of volume I, Fifth Edition of volumes II and III. This history of Spain under the eventful rule of Ferdinand and Isabella is in virtually the same condition today as when it was presented by one Eton "old boy" to another. William H. Prescott (1796-1859) was an American historian specializing in Spain and the Spanish Empire. Originally published in 1837, the present work quickly became a classic in the field, along with his two other major works: "The History of the Conquest of Mexico"(1843), and "A History of the Conquest of Peru (1847)." Both the giver and the recipient of this set left the playing fields of Eton to serve in Her Majesty's forces defending the Empire. James Ross Farquharson (d. 1888) of Invercauld, Scotland, served in the Crimea, eventually rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Scots Fusilier Guards. Maunsell Mark Prendergast (d. 1907) became a Major General in the 4th Bengal cavalry, fighting in the Indian mutiny at the siege of Lucknow. Lt. Col. Farquharson apparently never found time to read Prendergast's gift, and it remains in outstanding condition.. 180 x 115 mm. (7 x 4 1/2"). Three volumes. Sixth Edition of volume I, Fifth Edition of volumes II and III. FINE CONTEMPORARY TAN POLISHED CALF, covers bordered by double gilt fillet and blind roll, raised bands, spines lavishly gilt in compartments with fleuron formed of small tools, pomegranate cornerpieces, one brown and one red morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges.Flyleaf of first volume inscribed in ink: "J. John Gould
This remarkable ornithology lithograph with hand-finished color is from the esteemed John Gould’s Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Hummingbirds published in London between 1849 and 1887.Family of Hummingbirds undoubtedly featured some of Gould’s most desired plates. Of particular note was the use of gold and silver leaf to create the appearance of the natural iridescence of the hummingbird’s feathers. The birds are also featured amidst intricately drawn fauna that accentuates the beauty of the composition.John Gould created nearly 3000 hand-colored plates of animals in his extensive career. Gould gained much of his knowledge by observation and experience and contributed greatly to scientific knowledge at the time. Gould is believed to have done the original sketches for all of the plates. He utilized many talented artists to help create the finished lithograph including his wife Elizabeth Coxen Gould, Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf, William Hart, and H. C. Richter. Even at the time of publication, Gould’s plates were very expensive and only sold to a small set of subscribers. Due to the limited subscriber list, the plates remain rare and of high value for collectors today. --- The work is in excellent condition overall. Some of the plates may be a few minor imperfections or negligible text offset to be expected with age, but generally very clean. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.

Philadelphia; New York: J.B. Perry; N.C. Nafis, 1849. About very good.. 216; 68pp. plus 14pp. publisher's ads, [34]pp. salesman's sample ads. Original publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Head and foot of spine chipped, corners lightly worn. Light scattered foxing. An unusual volume, combining two works and including a section of salesman's samples at the end of the text. The first title deals not only with tales of famous pirates, but also with the slave revolt aboard the Amistad. The second title gives details of a grisly murder in Kentucky. Both works are illustrated with woodcuts; the second title does not list a Philadelphia imprint at all, only New York. Curiously, the final [34] pages following the regular publisher's ads appear to be salesman's samples for various works published by John B. Perry of Philadelphia. Interestingly, these are all illustrated with woodcuts and feature nonconsecutive sample pages from the text. One of the featured title pages is dated 1848, indicating that this is a later issue of the original work, with added material. Titles include, "A Full and Complete Account of the Late Awful Riots in Philadelphia," "Every Man His Own Farrier. Containing Ten Minutes' Advice How to Buy a Horse," "Annals of the Revolution: or, A History of the Doans" (also by H.K. Brooke), "The Life and Adventures of Robin Hood," "The Life of Andrew Helman, Alias Adam Horn," "The Life of Baron Frederick Trenck," "The Life of Celebrated Mail Robber and Daring Highwayman, Joseph Thompson Hare," and "George Barnwell or the Merchant's Clerk." Martinez, Claudio
Valparaiso: Imprenta Europea, 1849. 48pp. 12mo. 20th-century calf. Contemporary ink inscription on titlepage, small ink marks in upper-outer corner of pages. Occasional minor foxing on titlepage, light age toning in text. A very good copy. A rare mid-19th-century Valparaiso imprint encouraging Argentineans who had emigrated to Chile to return to their homeland. The work is addressed primarily to the exiles who had departed the country during the reign of dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas, who ruled Argentina from 1829 to 1852. "The tyrant enjoyed his power for a total of twenty-three years, from 1829 to 1852, and his 'sum total of power' for the last seventeen years of that period. Yet 'invulnerable' as Rosas seemed to be while he was dictator, his authority was gradually being weakened. Almost from the very first moment the intellectuals saw through his demagogy. After opposing it without success they fled into exile, where distance, separation, and loss gave them more strength and a better perspective than they could ever have achieved otherwise" - Crow. Martinez reflects at length on reasons why the exiles should return to Argentina, and calls for his fellow emigres to accompany him (here in translation): "Argentinos! The moment has already arrived for all of us to return to our homeland. Accept the counsel of one your companions in misfortune: your country is to be claimed." A curious work, with an epigraph from Lord Byron in English on the titlepage. A rare Chilean imprint, not in Palau or Sabin. LANDELLE Charles
S.n., s.l. 1849, 60x80cm environ hors cadre, autre. - Directed by Charles Landelle one of the most famous academic artists and most popular of the Second Empire, this beautiful portrait of a woman sitting in a chair, includes all the codes of the genre and shows the strong influence of Ingres, the great master of portraiture in his time, which was not yet his teacher. Details of hands especially direct reference to the style of the painter of the Odalisque and Turkish bath. The work is signed and dated 1849 lower right also recalls another famous painting: Portrait of Veuve Cliquot painted by Leon Cogniet two years later. That year the painter shows two portraits of women at the show and we think because of the anonymity often public models (simply titled the initial of their name) and the large size of this painting that could be one of them.Born in 1821 in Laval, Charles Landelle moved to Paris at the age of four years, then joined the Royal School of Fine Arts in 1837 as a student of Paul Delaroche and Ary Scheffer. Early in his career, Landelle painted several portraits to support himself. Strongly influenced by Italian painting after trips to the South of France and Italy, it copies some paintings of the great masters of the Renaissance to the Louvre. Medals at the Salon from his earliest exhibitions Fra Angelo receiving the inspirations of God (1842) and St. Cecilia (1848), he distinguished himself by religious and historical subjects that allow him to win the recognition of the high society of his time. His critics assure him success at the Salon soon numerous state … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANDFORD, Daniel Augustus]
Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1849. Octavo. Original green morocco-grained cloth, gilt lettered spine, blind ornamental panels on sides, terracotta-coloured coated endpapers. Contemporary ownership inscription (on verso of front free endpaper) of one "R. E. Payne". Binding furbished (extremities of spines and corners consolidated, grain of spine smoothed, lettering retouched), spine a little cocked, old neat repair to top portion of half-title (presumably where a previous ownership inscription was excised), yet a very good copy, clean and sound, with the publisher's 4pp. ads at the end. First edition of this engrossing eyewitness account of the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-49), published posthumously under the aegis of the author's father, John Sandford, archdeacon of Coventry. Daniel Augustus Sandford (1829-1849) - Rugby-educated, first commissioned in 1846 - served with the Second Bengal (European) Light Infantry, seeing action at Ramnagar, Chillianwallah and Gujrat; of the first of these battles he writes: "Men who have seen many a campaign, say it was the ugliest piece of fighting they ever had anything to do with - a general action in a jungle, where you couldn't see twenty yards, and were pelted at from every bush. My leaping powers were in great requisition, and saved me many a scratch." Riddick commments that, "The great impact of Sandford's narrative regards his recording of battle action from an intensely personal perspective. The hail of bullets and shells, the splattered brains of a friend, and the incredible thrust of energy to break into the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Starkey, Samuel Cross
Calcutta printed by D'Rozario and Co, 1849. First edition. 8vo, 23 x 14 cm; pp.[vi], 286, [2, blank], xxxvi, 116. With romanized Punjabi text. Contemporary cloth; rebacked, retaining original spine, cloth rather stained; internally clean. The first English-Punjabi dictionary, containing some 11,000 entries, Samuel Starkey's work precedes the better-known A dictionary of the Panjabi language (Ludhiana, 1854). The dictionary was compiled in the midst of the Anglo-Sikh wars, and undoubtedly met some immediate demands amongst British officers; its hasty compilation suggested by the fact that many of the dialogues are adapted from Gilchrist's Urdu equivalents. From 1848 to 1851 Starkey was Captain and Acting Commandant of the 3rd Regiment of Sikh Local Infantry stationed at Ambala. He was assisted in the dictionary's compilation by Jemadar Bussawa Sing. The work includes outlines of Punjabi grammar and a series of dialogues suitable for military officers covering desertion, inspection of arms, target practice, marching, treasure escort parties, sentries, sick men in hospital, pay and accounts, rioting, fire, thefts, courts martial, with such phrases as "If you allow me to cut off your leg, you will quickly recover, and be able to retire to your village on the pension of your service." BL (2 copies), Durham, Oxford, and SOAS. [Attributes: First Edition]
