HOKUSAI KATSUSHIKA
- Eirakuya Toshiro, Edo[Tokyo] 1849, 16x23,9cm, cousu. [Click Below for Full Description]

Viana, F. J. de
Imprenta del Ejercito, Cerrito de la Victoria, 1849. "First Edition of the First Known Report of the Malaspina Expedition and One of the Rarest Books Relating to Australia, With Further Accounts of California and Alaska". 8vo; complete with 2 titles, as issued, text set within an ornamental typographic border; 19th century Uruguayan half calf. EXTREMELY RARE TRAVEL ACCOUNT OF THE MALASPINA EXPEDITION. Alessandro Malaspina (1754-1810), of Italian birth sailing in the service of Spain, made a crucial 18th-century world voyage that included a visit to Port Jackson in 1793. Upon his return to Spain, court intrigue, which resulted in Malaspina's imprisonment, halted the publication of an official account. The results of his expedition, including sixty crates of specimens, were lost in the archives of the Madrid Museum. Malaspina's own journal was not studied until eighty years later when Pedro de Novo y Colson edited a version for publication in 1885. Francisco Javier de Viana was an ensign on the voyage who settled in Uruguay on its completion and his is the first report f the Malaspina voyage to be published. In the context of Australian exploration the work is of great importance, providing detailed information about Port Jackson just five years after the first settlement (the section occupies pp.258-266). Lada-Mocarski notes that there is "nothing as complete and detailed [about the Malaspina expedition] printed before 1868". Viana's sons prepared their father's account for the press. It was printed on the travelling press of the army besieging Montevideo during the war betw … [Click Below for Full Description]

GAVARD (Charles).
'The History of the Rebellion' is Edward Hyde's account of the English Civil War, being his first hand account of the war proceedings. The work has undertones of Hyde's own views of the Royalist strategies used in the war, despite being a Royalist himself. Hyde was severe in his judgments of the Royalist commanders as well as the Parliament commanders, being horrified by the execution of Charles I. As Charles II was attempting to regain the throne, Hyde joined him, and he soon became his chief advisor and Lord Chancellor. It was his opinion that the fatal flaw of the Stuart monarchs was letting their sound judgement be swayed and corrupted by their favourites within court. This work was published in a publishing war between the Roundheads and the Cavaliers, each side publishing their own collection of memoirs about the war. The Book of Mormon 1849 Scarce Leather Presentation Edition Scarce Liverpool 2nd European Edition Only 5,000 copies printed!! Flake 600, 563 pages! Flake 600; Crawley 415. The first printing of the Book of Mormon following the death of Joseph Smith. With minor editorial changes by Orson Pratt, and differing from the present text in two important verses (see further below). The main body of the Latter-day Saints was now struggling to survive in Utah, and had no means to publish the book there: no edition would be printed in Utah until 1871. Five thousand copies were printed, advertised in the Millennial Star ready for sale on May 15, 1849. "Reprinting the 1841 edition," explains Peter Crawley, Orson Pratt added a half title, included the testimonies of the three and eight witnesses on one page, and moved the index--now headed Contents--to the front of the book. He also made a number of minor textual changes and corrected the punctuation of the text on the title page. [Crawley, p. II:79. IMAGE SHOWN HERE: 1849 portrait of Orson Pratt, engraved by Frederick Piercy, 1849, as found in Pratt's Series of Pamphlets (not published in the Book of Mormon)] While this was the first Book of Mormon edition to be edited by Orson Pratt (who would be noted for creating the Book's modern chapter and verse system thirty years later), this was also the final Book of Mormon edition to be printed before Franklin D. Richards' addition of paragraph numbers (1852), which began the system in a simple way. The expedition, however, suffered cholera on the lower Rio Grande and the loss of horses at Corpus Christi. As a result, the project was abondoned and Webber never reached California." [W-C-B]. A curious work of New York boosterism, printed to promote a model of New York city carved in wood and exactly replicating every building in the city. The model was conceived and executed by E. Porter Belden and 150 assisting artisans, at a reported cost of over $20,000, and was exhibited at the Minerva Room beginning in 1846, with the intention of exhibiting it throughout the United States. (Whitman saw it and praised it highly.) The present volume is comprised of a history of New York by Belden, written with the aid of the "vast number of statistical details" collected in the course of constructing the model. The second work gives an account of the model and describes it in detail, provides testimony to its accuracy by leading civic figures, and reprints favorable press reviews … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas N. Lindsey, et al
Frankfort, Kentucky: 1849 KENTUCKY CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION SIGNATURE BOOK with SIGNATURES of 95 COUNTY REPRESENTATIVES, plus Sergeant at Arms, Reporters, etc. The Constitutional Convention signatory Sign In notebook was owned by THOMAS N. LINDSEY, member of the notable LINDSEY FAMILY of FRANKFORT KENTUCKY. Thomas N. Lindsey was the Representative of Franklin County, Kentucky. His signature is on the backside of the first page. The Signature Book is 3x5 inches and filled with blank paper. Lacking the front cover, however the spine covering and rear cover are present, as are all the inner pages. It appears likely that Thomas N. Lindsey was responsible for getting the signatures of the attending Representatives and others at the Kentucky Constitutional Convention of 1849 (that led to the adoption of the Constitution of 1850). He signed his name clearly on the verso of the first page, and I believe also on the back cover though that signature is very difficult to see. Though the notebook pages were blank, Lindsey wrote 3 numbers on a page up to number 100, leaving space by each number where Representatives signed in and identified themselves by county. 94 Representatives signed in and most wrote the county they represented below their signature, some also wrote the city they were from. The spaces beside numbers 95-100 are blank. However, Thomas N. Lindsey, the representative from Franklin County, signed at the front as noted above, meaning that this notebook contains a total of 95 signatures of the Constitutional Convention Representatives. Many of the signatures are accompan … [Click Below for Full Description]

Payne, John Howard (1791-1852 ; American actor, author, poet, and diplomat).
Accompanied by five autograph letters from Payne to Zantzinger, signed 27 October 1849 - 4 May 1851. Washington, DC, 1851. The poem is written on a sheet of stationery, 8 x 6 1/2 inches embossed at the edges, and mounted on a larger sheet (9 x 8 3/4 inches); a small newspaper clipping accompanies the poem and notes that this particular copy was loaned by Mrs. Zantzinger to the Smithsonian Institution to be exhibited at the National Museum. The accompanying letters (12mo and 8vo, nine total pages, approximately 800 words) are all addressed to William C. Zantzinger (1818-1878); four of the letters are still enclosed in their mailing envelopes, three of which have canceled Benjamin Franklin five cent stamps, among the first general issue postage stamps available for use throughout the United States. The sheet on which the poem is written is age-toned; otherwise, a very good lot. (7189). John Howard Payne (born in New York City but reared in Boston) was an American actor, poet, author and diplomat. He is best remembered for composing "Home, Sweet Home." He was charming, temperamental and his lack of business acumen often left him in financial distress. Early success as an actor led him to try his talents on the London stage, though he found more work as a playwright. His composition "Home, Sweet Home," originally performed as part of a play that he wrote in England for Charles Kemble was wildly successful both in the United States and abroad, but he did not obtain economic stability from it. He returned relatively penniless to the United States in 1832, but the popularity of hi … [Click Below for Full Description]
