William B Wetmore
Condition: Very Good. Very Good. Archive of Major William Boerum Wetmore (1849-1919), a prominent American of the 19th century. Content is dated from 1890 to 1895 and includes around 100 pages of written correspondence, 8 telegrams, two newspaper clippings and two maps cut out from larger railroad maps. Overall in very good condition with moderate toning and soiling, and light to moderate chipping on most letters; Wetmore's handwriting is rather hurried and sometimes is difficult to decipher.. Almost all letters were written on "Denver Club" letterhead, referring to the Denver Athletic Club (one letter includes a cut-out illustration of the building in which Wetmore describes where his office is located); other letterhead includes the Manitou House and the Brainerd Hotel in Boulder, CO. Most content regards daily life, finance, mining ventures, land and yachts. All letters were written to Wetmore's mother Sarah Tayler (or Taylor) Wetmore. He was married to Annette Butler Wetmore but divorced around 1900; they had three children. Major William Wetmore was a military officer educated at West Point, serving as a lieutenant at U.S. Army Forts Riley, Wallace and Leavenworth in Kansas and as a Major in the New York State Militia. His father was Samuel Wetmore (1812-1895) and is descendent of Colonel Jackson Browne of the British Colonial Army, and Captain William Boerum, U.S. Navy, of distinguished record during the War of 1812 ("52nd Annual Report of the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy"). Frankfort, Kentuck: 1849 KENTUCKY CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION SIGNATURE BOOK with SIGNATURES of 95 COUNTY REPRESENTATIVES, plus Sergeant at Arms, Reporters, etc. The Constitutional Convention signatory Sign In notebook was owned by THOMAS N. LINDSEY, member of the notable LINDSEY FAMILY of FRANKFORT KENTUCKY. Thomas N. Lindsey was the Representative of Franklin County, Kentucky. His signature is on the backside of the first page. The Signature Book is 3x5 inches and filled with blank paper. Lacking the front cover, however the spine covering and rear cover are present, as are all the inner pages. It appears likely that Thomas N. Lindsey was responsible for getting the signatures of the attending Representatives and others at the Kentucky Constitutional Convention of 1849 (that led to the adoption of the Constitution of 1850). He signed his name clearly on the verso of the first page, and I believe also on the back cover though that signature is very difficult to see. Though the notebook pages were blank, Lindsey wrote 3 numbers on a page up to number 100, leaving space by each number where Representatives signed in and identified themselves by county. 94 Representatives signed in and most wrote the county they represented below their signature, some also wrote the city they were from. The spaces beside numbers 95-100 are blank. However, Thomas N. Lindsey, the representative from Franklin County, signed at the front as noted above, meaning that this notebook contains a total of 95 signatures of the Constitutional Convention Representatives. Many of the signatures are accompani … [Click Below for Full Description]

Humphreys, Henry Noel (compiler, editor, and illuminator)
Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, London, 1849. Small 4to. Title-page, 2 ff., (4), xcv, [1], ii (Descriptive Index of the Embellishments), 1 f. (Illuminated Works by H. Noel Humphreys). Printed in black and red, with woodcuts throughout, and 4 full-page chromolithographs and 2 smaller chromolithographs illustrating the text. In beautiful original state, the famous pierced "Gothic" binding created from a mould formed by a papier-mâché and plaster mixture, almost perfect condition save a very small (6 mm) and unimportant wormhole inside the front cover (at the foot of the gutter margin), edges of the corners a trifle rounded. Original black leather spine, a.e.g. On the recto of the first blank leaf, in calligraphic MS on recto: "S.J. Hannam" surrounded by fine penwork. This is the finest copy we have seen, and it may be the finest copy we will ever see. The justly famous pierced Gothic binding is, according to Ruari McLain, "the most elaborate yet of the black papier-mâché kind." This is a celebration of Victorian antiquarianism by its early champion. It could be argued that the text itself is merely a vehicle for Humphreys' passionate excursions into what we now describe as the Victorian Gothic book. In our opinion. "A Record of the Black Prince" is his masterpiece. It may be the ne-plus-ultra of its genre. Humphrey's text relates the the life and deeds of Edward, the "Black Prince" of Wales (1330-1336), and is based on Froissart's near-contemporary Chronicles. The book is illustrated with chromolithograph reproductions of 15th-century Froissart manuscripts, which portray … [Click Below for Full Description]
