Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. 8vo. Contemporary half calf. First and only edition of this scarce work by Louis Estancelin (1777-1858) on the French Navy and the French colonies. It is organized in two parts: the first dedicated to Navy, gives the history of its administration, and the contemporary state of the fleet. The second is dedicated to the colonies in America, Oceania, Asia and Africa, with observations on Corsica. Fine copy. Polak, 3201.

Montevideo, [title page verso: Imprenta Uruguayana], 1849. - Large 8°, contemporary quarter black morocco over marbled boards (light wear, especially to joints), smooth spine with gilt title and ornamental fillets (old library numbers on spine painted over), marbled endleaves, text block edges sprinkled blue-green. Very good condition internally. Overall good to very good condition. 382 pp., (1 l.). *** FIRST EDITION. The Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata was a five-year-long naval blockade imposed on the Argentine Confederation, ruled by Juan Manuel de Rosas, in order to support the Colorado Party in the Uruguayan Civil War. It closed Buenos Aires to naval commerce. The Anglo-French navy trespassed into the internal waters of Argentina to sell their products, since Rosas maintained a protectionist policy to improve the weak Argentine economy. Eventually both Britain and France gave in, signing treaties in 1849 (Britain) and 1850 (France) acknowledging Argentine sovereignty over its rivers.*** Palau 37751. Sabin 9592. Leclerc 2486.         The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America

J.J. Audubon (-V.G. Audubon), New York 1849 - (27 1/4 x 21 1/4 inches). Three lithographic titlepages, three leaves of letterpress contents. 150 handcolored lithographic plates after John James Audubon and John Woodhouse Audubon, the backgrounds after Victor Audubon, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. Expertly bound to style in half dark purple morocco over period purple cloth covered boards, spine with raised bands lettered in the second and third compartments, the others decorated in gilt, marbled edges and endpapers [With:] The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America . New York: J. J. Audubon, 1846-1851-1854. 3 volumes, small 4to (10 x 7 inches). Half-titles, list of subscribers. 6 hand coloured lithographed plates [i.e. plate 124 and plates 151-155]. Expertly bound to style uniform to the above in half purple morocco over period purple cloth covered boards, marbled endpapers. A beautiful set of the first elephant folio edition of Audubon's Quadrupeds, complete with the separate text volumes. This is Audubon's final great natural history work. Unlike the double-elephant folio edition of the Birds of America, which was printed in London, the Quadrupeds was produced in the United States. It was the largest and most significant color plate book produced in America in the 19th century, and a fitting monument to Audubon's continuing genius. The work was originally published in thirty parts, each containing five plates, and priced at ten dollars per number. The first proofs were ready in 1842, but Audubon was fully employing the services of the lithographer J.T. Bowen on the octavo edition of The Birds of America, which was the greatest money-maker of any of the Audubon family ventures. Instead, Audubon and his sons busied themselves in gathering subscribers, signing up over 200 by the summer of 1844 (eventually the subscription list reached 300). The last part of the octavo Birds appeared in May, 1844, and publication of the folio Quadrupeds commenced immediately with the first number being issued in January, 1845 and the first volume completed within the year. Audubon's health began to fail dramatically, and responsibility for new art work fell mainly on his son John Woodhouse Audubon, with some help from his brother Victor. The second volume was completed in March, 1847. But, as John Woodhouse travelled first to Texas, then to London and Europe, the pace slowed further. The final number was issued early in 1849. By this time the elder Audubon had become completely senile ("his mind is all in ruins" Bachman wrote sadly in June, 1848). He died in early 1851. In the end, about half of the plates were based on the work of John James and half on the efforts of John Woodhouse. Audubon's collaborator on the text of the Quadrupeds was the naturalist and Lutheran clergyman, John Bachman, who was a recognized authority on the subject in the United States. The two began their association when Audubon stayed with Bachman and his family in Charleston for a month in 1831. This friendship was later cemented by the marriage of Audubon's sons, Victor and John to Bachman's daughters, Maria and Eliza. Audubon knew Bachman's contribution to the Quadrupeds would be crucial, especially because of his concerns over his own technical knowledge. By 1840, Bachman had become indispensable to the Quadrupeds project, and as Audubon showed increasing signs of vagueness, found himself writing most of the text, with some help from Victor (who was the primary business manager of the project). The text appeared between December, 1846 and the spring of 1854. Two issues of the third volume of the text are known, the present being the preferred second issue, with the supplementary text and the six octavo sized plates issued in 1854, being images not found in the folio atlas. The elephant folio edition of Audubon's Quadrupeds will always be compared to the incomparable Birds. It should be judged in its own right, as one of the grandest American works of natural history ever produced, and one of [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In addition to the first title page with hand-colored vignette (for Part 1), this work contains the title pages for Part 2 and Part 3. The subscriber's list is not bound into this copy. First edition, first issue. An exceptional copy of this magnificent botanical work, with thirty superbly hand-colored lithographed plates, of great interest for their accuracy of the drawing of the blossoms and parts and for their descriptions of provenance. Originally planned for ten plates only, the work was expanded following the positive reception by subscribers, and by John Hooker's continuation of his explorations in the Himalayas. Great Flower Books (p. 60) states it to be "An important work both for the botanist and horticulturalist since it contains descriptions and plates of the best garden Rhododendron species which can be grown in this country and an account of their discovery." Walter Hood Fitch, who executed the lithographs from the author's field sketches and dried specimens, was one of the most prolific and one of the best botanical artists of the Victorian period. The text was edited by Sir William Hooker (1785-1865) from his son's field notes sent back from India. See also Nissen BBI, 911 and Blunt, p. 225. Early presentation inscription to Lady Seeker from J. H. Standen, Bombay, 1865 on the front blank endpaper. Standen was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bombay.

Octavo (203 x 129 mm). Contemporary roan backed marbled boards, vellum tips, marbled endpapers. With six folding engraved plates at the end of the volume. Flat spine sometime decorated gilt, with lettering and numbering labels, the labels and gilt now worn away, spine ends and corners rubbed and worn. Pale dampmark to top margin and outer corner, occasional spotting and the odd mark; withal a good copy. First appearance of Dupuit's important paper on tolls and transport charges, which fills pages 170-248 of the 1849 volume of the Annales des ponts et chaussées. In it, he revisits and develops his earlier paper of 1844, De la mesure de l'utilité des travaux publics. "An engineer and mathematician... Dupuit was led both by his occupations and studies to reflect upon the advantage which the public derive from means of communication, and on the method of measuring with precision that species of advantage, and utility in general. His profound reflections are embodied in two articles in the Annales... The author of these papers 'must probably be credited with the earliest perfect comprehension of the theory of utility,' as Jevons says" (F. Y. Edgeworth in Palgrave's Dictionary of political economy).

Nouvelle edition

Imp. de Pierre Leroux, Boussac 1849 - In 16, pp. (4) + IV + 344.

Molto rare. Bibliografia: D. Straffolino, Alfred Guesdon, L'Italie a vol d'oiseau (1849). Alfred Guesdon was born in Nantes, June the 13th 1808. Once he finished his classical studies, in 1829, he went to Paris, to study architecture as a pupil of Antoine Martin Garnaud. Starting from 1830, he devoted himself to experimentations and researches on the art of lithography, especially on historical subjects, views and landscapes he took from his many trips around Europe. The distinctiveness of these views is the fact that they are the first representations of the cities from above, realized on board of an air balloon. In 1849 he published the lithographic plates in the famous L'Italie à vol d'oiseau., o storia e descrizione sommaria delle principali città di questo paese, di H.         A Statistical Inquiry into the Condition of the People of Colour, of the City and Districts of Philadelphia

Philadelphia: Kite and Walton. 1849. First. 44pp., disbound, stitched, spine slightly worn, text near fine. The first edition of the second census taken of black Philadelphians, published eleven years after the first. The census, conducted by the Society of Friends, or Quakers, was a true picture of the African-American population of Philadelphia. It concluded that, despite immense hardships, particularly racially motivated violence, the 10,000 black Philadelphians prospered as a class, despite Frederick Douglass's contention that black Philadelphians faced even greater hardship than Southern freedman. .

Simms & M'intyre; George Routledge and Co., London - 1849. () Near fine. 326pp. 16mo. Bound in contemporary full calf with gold gilt outer dentelles to the front and back boards. Gold gilt lettering stamped to the spine, as well as five decorated raised bands. Hand sewn headbands. Marbling to all of the text block edges. Marbled endpapers. Aside from some very minor shelf wear, this book is in near fine condition. Although it is not evident from the spine, there are two titles, both published in 1849, that have been contemporarily rebound into one volume: Jane Austen's Emma and Maria J. McIntosh's Charms and Counter-Charms. A strange, but interesting, seeming choice to pair Austen's incredibly famous novel with a much less popular novel by a largely forgotten author, McIntosh, who also wrote under the pen name "Aunt Kitty". An incredibly attractive contemporary binding on two classic novels. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Verlag von A. D. Geisler (Druck von F. C. Dubbers), Bremen, 1849 - First edition. In blue wrappers. 56 p., and folding lithographed map ("Karte zum Rathgeber für Süd-Australien"; printed by Anst. v. W. Jöntzen in Bremen). A very early emigration guide for the German pioneer settlers to Adelaide, South-Australia, with a lithographed map. Emigration to South-Australia from Germany began in the late 1830s, the first ship with German emigrants landed at Port Adelaide in 1837. The early immigrants were Lutherans escaping from religious persecution of the Prussian state. After the death of Prussian King Frederick William III in 1840, the religious reason changes to economic, and the need for reliable information about South-Australia increased. This book is one of those early publications that contains accurate facts about the climate, the geography, the flora and fauna and the history of South-Australia. It also contains reliable and practical information about the currency, the possible salary for various professions, the price of the basic goods, the custom rates, and the details of the ship travel, that were necessary for the immigrants. Very less is known about the author, Eugen Laun. In the foreword he refers to his earlier, seventeen-page book "Kurze darstellung von Süd-Australien und Port Adelaide" (Bremen, 1847) and also to his former journey to Adelaide on Leontine, an early emigrant ship with 262 passengers in 1848, which was already his third mission to Adelaide. Formerly he served as Captain on Heerheebhoy Rustomjee Patel in 1845 with 262 passengers on board and 1846 with about 250 passengers. These were among the very first German emigrant ships to South-Australia and the first exclusively from Bremen. A very early, scarce, important publication about South-Australia and the German pioneers. [Ferguson, 5089a.]. Stains on title page. Occasional foxing. A water stain to inner margin throughout. Map trimmed at lower edge that effects the title, neat line and about 2 mm of the map. Overall in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Portrait de Madame X...

S.n, 1849. - S.n., S.l. 1849, 60x80cm environ hors cadre, autre.

Dimensioni 440x280 circa. CHART OF THE WESTERN COAST OF NORTH AMERICA, EXTENDING FROM THE GULF OF NICOYA TO SAN BLAS. COMPILED CHIEFLY FROM THE SPANISH SURVEYS, THE WHOLE MUCH IMPROVED BY THE OBSERVATIONS OF CAPTAIN BEECHEY R.N. AND COMMANDER BELCHER R.N. [caption title].

London: James Imray, 1849. - Engraved chart, 26 1/2 x 39 1/2 inches. Backed with linen. Two old vertical fold lines. A couple of very small chips around edges. Lightly tanned, with a few scattered foxmarks. Very good. A large "blue back" chart of the west coast of southern Mexico and Central America, extending from Cebaco Island in present-day Panama in the south to San Blas, Mexico, to the north. The map contains eight insets delineating important safe ports: Sihuatinijo (Zihuatinejo). Acapulco, Guatulco, San Carlos, Realejo, Salinas Bay, Culebra, and San Blas. It also shows views of several volcanic mountain formations from the sea at Colina, Guatemala, and Viejo, as well as views of Cape Corrientes, the Tetas de Coyuca, and the entrance to Acapulco. The map is the seventh in a series of eight that chart the Pacific coastlines of North and South America published by the London firm of James Imray in the mid-19th century. During this period, Imray was fast becoming the principal private supplier of sea charts to the merchant ships of Great Britain. His popularity was due in large part to the production of charts such as this one, which provided new and essential basic guides to areas of the Pacific beginning to be frequented more heavily by private British traders. "Salesmanship and prolific output alone would not ahve brought success unless the quality of the product had been right. In achieving this Imray had an advantage over earlier generations of commercial chart publishers, who faced a continual problem acquiring adequate hydragraphic information for their charts. By Imray's time accurate new survey material was fast becoming available for all parts of the world. His contribution was to present the material in a convenient and familiar form for the merchant ship navigator. This had changed little over the years and Imray retained the well-tried format of a small-scale chart covering as much as possible of the sea passage for a particular trade, with numerous large-scale plans of ports" - Fisher. Rare, with OCLC recording only one copy, at the Huntington Library, and not in the British Library. FISHER, THE MAKERS OF THE BLUEBACK CHARTS, p. 39. OCLC 80151015.
