Corrispondenza politica.

Zu seinen Schülern zählen u. a.

FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

Each volume sold about one hundred and fifty thousands copies within a month of its publication, and the numerous reprints and translations into almost every literary language have perpetuated Macaulay's ideas almost to this day" (PMM).

[MANUSCRIPT LEGAL DEPOSITION CONCERNING THE ESTATE OF JOHN L. BENNETT OF DALLAS COUNTY, ALABAMA]

[Dallas County, possibly Selma], 1849. [43]pp. Folio. Sheets tied with ribbon at top edge. Old fold lines, minor wear and soiling. Chipping and wear to final leaf. Very good. This lengthy deposition reports the complaint of Henry Atwood and others against the estate of John L. Bennett, who upon moving into Alabama in the 1830s, built up a large slave-holding cotton plantation and incurred many debts which formed an entangled web of interests. The document requests a full inventory of slaves and property brought into Alabama by Bennett in 1834, a description of lands owned by Bennett in partnership with the "South Carolina or Elliott Land Company," and details several large loans taken by Bennett from individuals as well as the Bank of Alabama at Mobile. In order to settle debts, at one point a large group of named slaves and other items were confiscated and "sold said slaves...to the highest and best bidder for cash...so many slaves were necessary to pay off and satisfy and discharge the principal, interests and costs...about the sum of seven thousand dollars." There is a listing of the names of Bennett's slaves, about twenty-five of whom remained as part of the estate. A long and interesting narrative which includes much information on the legal mechanisms of the period, including the confiscation and sale of slaves. The document illustrates wonderfully how much of the "Cotton Kingdom" was built on a mountain of speculative debt, offering the possibility of big gains, but equally the chance of major losses.

        Les Étoiles

1849. Grandville?s ?Last Fairy-Tale? [GRANDVILLE, J.J., illustrator]. MÉRY, Joseph. Les Étoiles. Dernière féerie par J.-J. Grandville. Texte par Méry. Astronomie des dames par le Comte Foelix. Paris: G. De Gonet, [n.d., 1849]. First edition. Two parts in one quarto volume (10 1/2 x 7 1/16 inches; 266 x 180 mm.). [4], xvi, 252; [4], 186, [2] pp. With added hand-colored wood-engraved vignette title in each part, hand-colored engraved portrait of Grandville by Ch. Geoffroy, and twelve hand-colored engraved plates (eleven in the first part, one in the second part) by Ch. Geoffroy after Grandville, all with original tissue-guards.Publisher's black cloth, covers and spine pictorially stamped and lettered in in gilt. yellow coated endpapers. Lower hinge expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Small hole in tissue guard of plate facing page 196. The absolute bare minimum of foxing to margins of a few plates otherwise a very fine and fresh example. A wonderful copy of this lovely book, with exquisite plates after Grandville. ?The compositions of this ?last fairy-tale,? brilliantly engraved on steel by Charles Geoffroy and delicately colored, form a fitting memorial to Grandville. They show that his powers remained unimpaired to the end of his short career. Grandville told his wife on the day he began these designs: ?for too long I have kept my eyes lowered to the earth; now I want to lift them to the heavens? (p. ix). The pattern which he follows is similar to that of Les fleurs animées. Nearly every plate has its beautiful lady, clad in white and adorned with stars, looming in the sky, with varied scenes of earthly life below her. These designs, Grandville?s tranquil refuge from the turmoil that beset his mind, are as charming as they are mysterious. Also included in the volume are an unsigned essay, which remains the most considerable source of biographical information about Grandville, and a fine portrait of him by Geoffroy (I, xvi) with a border of his creations, animals paying him tribute as well as his flower- and star-ladies? (Ray). This posthumously published work (Grandville died on March 17, 1847) was originally issued in fifty parts, the first part appearing in September 1849.         NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPEDITION TO THE RIVER JORDAN AND THE DEAD SEA WITH MAPS AND NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS.

Philadelphia: Lee & Blanchard, 1849. 1st edition. Original gilt tooled publisher?s cloth, Large 8vo, 508 pages. Includes 2 fold-out maps and 28 engraved plates. Bound in at the rear is a list of publications by the publisher. The personal Copy of Rebecca Gratz, the most famous observant American Jewish woman of the 19th Century, with her ownership signature on title page with year (1849) . Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) was a preeminent Jewish American educator and philanthropist. Her parents were observant Jews and active members of Philadelphia?s first synagogue, Mikveh Israel. In 1801, at the age of 20, Rebecca Gratz helped establish the Female Association for the Relief of Women and Children in Reduced Circumstances, which helped women whose families were suffering after the American Revolutionary War. In 1815, after seeing the need for an institution for orphans in Philadelphia, she was among those instrumental in founding the Philadelphia Orphan Asylum. Four years later, she was elected secretary of its Board. She continued to hold this office for forty years. Under Gratz' auspices, a "Hebrew Sunday School" was started in 1838. Gratz became both its superintendent and president and assisted in developing its curriculum, resigning in 1864. Gratz was also one of the founding members of the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society, around November 1819. In 1850, she advocated in The Occident, under the signature A Daughter of Israel, the foundation of a Jewish foster home. Her advocacy was largely instrumental in the establishment of such a home in 1855. She was also involved in the foundation of the Fuel Society and the Sewing Society. Gratz is said to have been the model of Rebecca, the daughter of the Jewish merchant Isaac of York, who is the heroine in the novel ?Ivanhoe, ? by Sir Walter Scott. Scott's attention had been drawn to Gratz's character by Washington Irving, who was a close friend of the Gratz family. The claim has been disputed, but it has also been well sustained in an article entitled "The Original of Rebecca in Ivanhoe", which appeared in The Century Magazine, 1882, pp. 679?682. Gratz never married. Her portrait was painted twice by the noted American artist Thomas Sully. One of those portraits, is on display at the National Museum of American Jewish History. Shortly after Rebecca Gratz died in 1869, her brother, Hyman, founded and financed Gratz College, a teachers? college in Philadelphia, in her memory. Gratz is buried at Mikveh Israel Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Very Good Condition. Material signed by Gratz is rare. (AMR-51-2)

Leipzig, Christian Ernst Kollmann, 1850. 8vo. Contemporary half tanned sheepskin.

Bodi 4717; Engelmann I, p. 241. cf. Ferguson IV, 5137. First edition of the German translation of an emigrant's guide to New South-Wales, Australia. The work was written by John Pattison and published anonymously, based on his own experiences during his twelve year stay in Australia. It was first published in 1849, entitled New South-Wales: its past, present and future condition, with notes upon its resources and capabilities. The short preface states that is was published "with the hope that it may add to the diffusion of truthful information respecting Australia, and the knowledge that is will not mislead" (English edition). It starts with a brief history of "New Holland" and its first settlers, and continues with a description of its population, the high need for skilled labourers, and all kinds of information the emigrant should know before going to Australia. With a library stamp on title-page and the first and last few pages foxed. Otherwise a very good copy.

1849. [Firenze, Forte Belvedere], 1849, manoscritto su carta, in-folio, cc.

Patrick Gordon (1635-1699) was a Scottish soldier of fortune who became a general in the Russian army and a close friend of Tsar Peter I. He originally enlisted at Hamburg in the Swedish military forces in 1655 and served alternately for Sweden and Poland in the following years. In 1661 he took service in the Russian army, where he enjoyed a very successful military career. During the revolution in Moscow in 1689 Gordon and his troops virtually decided events in the favour of Tsar Peter I, and after this Gordon remained high in the Tsar's favour. General Gordon's diary, written in English, was preserved in the archives of the Imperial Russian foreign office. It was published for the first time in the present German translation. The importance of this diary for the understanding of late seventeenth-century Russia has long been recognised and it is an outstanding source for the reign of Peter the Great.

Publisher's ads on the rear wrapper. A chapbook of descriptions of popular games for children, including marbles, skipping rope, tag, kite-flying, see-saw, archery, and most prominently playing ball: "There are a great number of games played with Balls, of which Base-Ball, Trap-Ball, Cricket, Up-Ball, Catch-Ball, and Drive Ball, are the most common." Two of the illustrations depict ball players. There were several works similar to this one in the preceding decade, but they described different games, and this one is important for its relatively early reference to "base-ball."

A Christian psychological exposition for edification and awakening. By Anit-Climacus. Translated by S. Kierkegaard). Copenhagen, C. A. The philosophical furthering of his Concept of Dread, this work takes the issue of anxiety beyond the earlier psychological considerations, and engages with the spiritual nature of despair. While anxiety is generated in the encounter with circumstances and is related to the ethical, despair is the anxiety which results from contemplating the eternal. This sickness unto death is marked by the concept of despair. According to Kierkegaard, an individual is "in despair" if he does not align himself with God or God's plan for the self. In this way he loses his self, which Kierkegaard defines as the "relation's relating itself to itself in the relation." Kierkegaard defines humanity as the tension between the "finite and infinite", and the "possible and the necessary", and is identifiable with the dialectical balancing act between these opposing features, the relation. While humans are inherently reflective and self-conscious beings, to become a true self one must not only be conscious of the self but also be conscious of being created by a higher being, God. When one either denies this Self or the Self's creator, one is in despair. CONDITION: Very good+. Quarter-leather with marbled boards, light cracking along hinges.

Millard Fillmore fulfills a request for his autograph!

Buffalo, November 8, 1849. 7.5" x 9.5". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""Millard Fillmore,"" as Vice President, 1 page, 7.5"" x 9.5"", Buffalo, November 8, 1849, to noted collector Louis Jacob Cist (1818 - 1885) honoring an autograph request. Laid in to a larger sheet, expected folds, very light soiling, else fine. Fillmore writes, in full: ""I am honored by the receipt of your note of the 3d inst. requesting my autograph; which I accord with pleasure but as not deemed worthy of a place in the collection of those distinguished names to which you allude. ""From the library of John Augustin Daly (1838 - 1899). Daly, one of the most important figures in nineteenth-century American theater, worked as a critic, manager, playwright and stage director. At the time of his death, he owned two major theaters, one in New York and the other in London. Daly is considered personally responsible for the careers of such acting greats as John Drew Jr. Maurice Barrymore, Fanny Davenport, Maude Adams, Sara Jewett, Isadora Duncan, Tyrone Power, Sr. and many others. Daly was also an avid book lover and collector, amassing an enormous library of books and original manuscripts. That collection was dispersed in an epic, two-week auction at the American Art Association in New York in March 1900. The present letter was part of an extra-illustrated volume, described in the catalog as a ""Unique copy, with autograph letters of all the Presidents inserted..."" Walter Benjamin, writing in The Collector, described the sale as a ""blaze of glory, due to the total having reached nearly $200,000."" Benjamin attributed the sale's incredible success to ""a small bookseller on 42d street, who appeared at the sale with apparently unlimited cash, and was soon the master of the situation."" That ""small bookseller,"" was George D. Smith (d. 1920), who, up until that time, had been an obscure and unsuccessful book dealer who began his career in 1883 with Dodd & Mead. Smith would dominate the market for the next two decades, working as an agent for some of the wealthiest collectors in the country—most notably Henry E. Huntington, for whom Smith purchased a portion of the Duke of Devonshire Library in 1914 for $1.5 million (American Art Association, Catalogue of the Valuable Literary and Art Property Gathered by the Late Augustin Daly, New York, 1900; The Collector, New York, May 1900, 1-2; Publisher's Weekly, March 13, 1920, 801; Ibid, March 21, 1914, 1008; ""Geo. D. Smith Dies in HIs Book Store, New York Times, March 5, 1928, 13). The extra-illustrated volume of presidents from which this piece derives fetched $850, nearly four times above the going rate for presidential sets at the time. According to Walter Benjamin, Smith quickly resold the volume for $1,000. The collection did not surface again until it appeared in a minor auction in early 2016. (The Collector, New York, May 1900, 1-2)Provenance: John Augustin Daly; American Art Association, New York, March 19, 1900, Lot 3122; George D. Smith, New York."

NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPEDITION TO THE RIVER JORDAN AND THE DEAD SEA WITH MAPS AND NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS.

Philadelphia: Lee & Blanchard. 1849. Hardback. (AMR-51-2) .
