The philosophical furthering of his Concept of Dread, this work takes the issue of anxiety beyond the earlier psychological considerations, and engages with the spiritual nature of despair. While anxiety is generated in the encounter with circumstances and is related to the ethical, despair is the anxiety which results from contemplating the eternal. This sickness unto death is marked by the concept of despair. According to Kierkegaard, an individual is "in despair" if he does not align himself with God or God's plan for the self. In this way he loses his self, which Kierkegaard defines as the "relation's relating itself to itself in the relation." Kierkegaard defines humanity as the tension between the "finite and infinite", and the "possible and the necessary", and is identifiable with the dialectical balancing act between these opposing features, the relation. While humans are inherently reflective and self-conscious beings, to become a true self one must not only be conscious of the self but also be conscious of being created by a higher being, God. When one either denies this Self or the Self's creator, one is in despair. CONDITION: Very good+. Quarter-leather with marbled boards, light cracking along hinges.

Millard Fillmore fulfills a request for his autograph!

Buffalo, November 8, 1849. 7.5" x 9.5". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""Millard Fillmore,"" as Vice President, 1 page, 7.5"" x 9.5"", Buffalo, November 8, 1849, to noted collector Louis Jacob Cist (1818 - 1885) honoring an autograph request. Laid in to a larger sheet, expected folds, very light soiling, else fine. Fillmore writes, in full: ""I am honored by the receipt of your note of the 3d inst. requesting my autograph; which I accord with pleasure but as not deemed worthy of a place in the collection of those distinguished names to which you allude. ""From the library of John Augustin Daly (1838 - 1899). Daly, one of the most important figures in nineteenth-century American theater, worked as a critic, manager, playwright and stage director. At the time of his death, he owned two major theaters, one in New York and the other in London. Daly is considered personally responsible for the careers of such acting greats as John Drew Jr. Maurice Barrymore, Fanny Davenport, Maude Adams, Sara Jewett, Isadora Duncan, Tyrone Power, Sr. and many others. Daly was also an avid book lover and collector, amassing an enormous library of books and original manuscripts. That collection was dispersed in an epic, two-week auction at the American Art Association in New York in March 1900. The present letter was part of an extra-illustrated volume, described in the catalog as a ""Unique copy, with autograph letters of all the Presidents inserted..."" Walter Benjamin, writing in The Collector, described the sale as a ""blaze of glory, due to the total having reached nearly $200,000."" Benjamin attributed the sale's incredible success to ""a small bookseller on 42d street, who appeared at the sale with apparently unlimited cash, and was soon the master of the situation."" That ""small bookseller,"" was George D. Smith (d. 1920), who, up until that time, had been an obscure and unsuccessful book dealer who began his career in 1883 with Dodd & Mead. Smith would dominate the market for the next two decades, working as an agent for some of the wealthiest collectors in the country—most notably Henry E. Huntington, for whom Smith purchased a portion of the Duke of Devonshire Library in 1914 for $1.5 million (American Art Association, Catalogue of the Valuable Literary and Art Property Gathered by the Late Augustin Daly, New York, 1900; The Collector, New York, May 1900, 1-2; Publisher's Weekly, March 13, 1920, 801; Ibid, March 21, 1914, 1008; ""Geo. D. Smith Dies in HIs Book Store, New York Times, March 5, 1928, 13). The extra-illustrated volume of presidents from which this piece derives fetched $850, nearly four times above the going rate for presidential sets at the time. According to Walter Benjamin, Smith quickly resold the volume for $1,000. The collection did not surface again until it appeared in a minor auction in early 2016. (The Collector, New York, May 1900, 1-2)Provenance: John Augustin Daly; American Art Association, New York, March 19, 1900, Lot 3122; George D. Smith, New York."

NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPEDITION TO THE RIVER JORDAN AND THE DEAD SEA WITH MAPS AND NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS.

Philadelphia: Lee & Blanchard. 1849. Hardback. 1st edition. Original gilt tooled publisher?s cloth, Large 8vo, 508 pages. Includes 2 fold-out maps and 28 engraved plates. Bound in at the rear is a list of publications by the publisher. The personal Copy of Rebecca Gratz, the most famous observant American Jewish woman of the 19th Century, with her ownership signature on title page with year (1849) . Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) was a preeminent Jewish American educator and philanthropist. Her parents were observant Jews and active members of Philadelphia?s first synagogue, Mikveh Israel. In 1801, at the age of 20, Rebecca Gratz helped establish the Female Association for the Relief of Women and Children in Reduced Circumstances, which helped women whose families were suffering after the American Revolutionary War. In 1815, after seeing the need for an institution for orphans in Philadelphia, she was among those instrumental in founding the Philadelphia Orphan Asylum. Four years later, she was elected secretary of its Board. She continued to hold this office for forty years. Under Gratz' auspices, a "Hebrew Sunday School" was started in 1838. Gratz became both its superintendent and president and assisted in developing its curriculum, resigning in 1864. Gratz was also one of the founding members of the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society, around November 1819. In 1850, she advocated in The Occident, under the signature A Daughter of Israel, the foundation of a Jewish foster home. Her advocacy was largely instrumental in the establishment of such a home in 1855. She was also involved in the foundation of the Fuel Society and the Sewing Society. Gratz is said to have been the model of Rebecca, the daughter of the Jewish merchant Isaac of York, who is the heroine in the novel ?Ivanhoe, ? by Sir Walter Scott. Scott's attention had been drawn to Gratz's character by Washington Irving, who was a close friend of the Gratz family. The claim has been disputed, but it has also been well sustained in an article entitled "The Original of Rebecca in Ivanhoe", which appeared in The Century Magazine, 1882, pp. 679?682. Gratz never married. Her portrait was painted twice by the noted American artist Thomas Sully. One of those portraits, is on display at the National Museum of American Jewish History. Shortly after Rebecca Gratz died in 1869, her brother, Hyman, founded and financed Gratz College, a teachers? college in Philadelphia, in her memory. Gratz is buried at Mikveh Israel Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Very Good Condition. Material signed by Gratz is rare. (AMR-51-2) .

[COLLECTION OF FIVE ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS OF PIMA INDIANS AND THEIR LANDS IN ARAVAIPA CANYON, ARIZONA, MADE BY FORTY-NINER ROBERT HART ON HIS JOURNEY TO THE CALIFORNIA GOLD FIELDS]

[Aravaipa Canyon, Az, 1849. Five original watercolors on card stock, detailed below. A bit of residue on the verso of the images. One drawing with four pin-sized holes. Very good. Each matted and housed in a red morocco backed box. An extraordinary group of watercolors made by a Virginian travelling the Southern Route to the California gold fields in 1849, among the earliest illustrations depicting the Pima Indians of southern Arizona, and showing their lands in the Aravaipa canyons. A very interesting group of five original watercolors showing Pima Indians and their lands in Arizona, made by a young '49er on his way to the California gold fields by the Southern Route. The Southern Route, also called the Gila Trail, was the least travelled overland route by those headed to California in 1849, and original artwork from those overlands is very rare. These watercolors are also notable as being among the earliest images of the Pima Indians of which we are aware. Although unsigned, these watercolors were apparently produced by Robert Hart (b. 1834), whose family owned and operated several gold mines in Spotsylvania and Louisa counties in Virginia in the 1840s. In the summer of 1849, Hart, along with his cousins Andrew Bronaugh and Henry Hart, went west to participate in the California Gold Rush. They went overland, and decided to travel by the Southern Route, also known as the Gila Trail, which took them through New Mexico and Arizona, and through the lands of the Pima and other Indian tribes. The Hart- Bronaugh party passed through southern Arizona in late July, 1849, and arrived at the California gold fields the next month. Robert Hart did not stay long in California, leaving in the fall of 1850. He soured on mining and on living conditions in the mines, and returned to the East Coast by boat and across the Isthmus of Panama. Records from the 1850 census indicate that young Robert was back in Virginia, living with his aunt, Mary Frances Jenkins Holladay at her home, known as "Woodside," in Louisa County. Following Hart's return home from California, he worked with his father, Robert, and his uncle, Colonel James Hart, at the Old Rough and Ready Furnace in Louisa County. After his father's passing Hart moved with his family to Christian County, Kentucky. These watercolors were found at "Woodside" by a Hart- Jenkins family member, and have remained in the family since they were re-discovered. The watercolors are accompanied by typed excerpts from the diary of Robert Hart. These excerpts were included in a family history published by Robert M. Jenkins in 2000. The watercolors included in this collection conform to diary entries made by Hart in the period July 28 to July 31, 1849, when he and his fellows were travelling through Pima lands. The illustrations (all but one untitled) are as follows: 1) Watercolor showing five Pima Indians and an Anglo- American, 5 3/4 x 8 inches. The white man in the picture is seated with his arm resting on a table which also holds an inkwell. Some surmise that it may portray Robert Hart himself, though the figure in the watercolor appears much older than Hart, who was only fifteen when he went west to California. The scene appears to take place inside a Pima tent. Four of the Pima are fully dressed and the illustration wonderfully portrays their clothing and headdresses. The fifth Pima stands with his back to the viewer, wears a simple loin cloth, and holds a long spear. 2) Watercolor showing three horses, one with a rider, passing along a river in a small canyon, 6 x 3 1/4 inches. This illustration has four small pin-sized holes. The rider is on the horse nearest to us, and has a rifle slung across his lap. The horses are shown walking through a shallow stream that passes through a steep- walled canyon. 3) "Glade in Aravipa Canons." Watercolor showing four men setting up camp in a glade in Aravaipa Canyon, 2 5/8 x 4 3/16 inches. This illustration shows a lush glade with four men (three of them seated) depicted in the bottom center of the image. 4) Watercolor showing a narrow passage through a steep canyon, 5 1/4 x 3 3/8 inches. Almost certainly another scene from Aravaipa Canyon, showing the beautiful but difficult terrain through which Hart and his companions passed. 5) Watercolor showing a small waterfall, 4 1/2 x 2 3/4 inches. This image, showing a small trickle of a waterfall, conveys the deep brown tones of the rock walls and the dark green vegetation growing thereon. In his diary entry for July 28, 1849 (a typed transcription of which accompanies the watercolors), Hart wrote of his encounters with the Pima, the type of which appears to be depicted in the first watercolor described above: "We today remained with the Pimos [sic], with whom we have had two trades of mules and horses. And our camp has been thronged with them all day with various articles for trade....The Chief has been to see us. They none of them wear any clothing, only around the hips, and their skin is sun proof. For it is far hotter than ever I felt and has, from the heat of the sand, blistered my feet through my shoes." Another of Hart's diary entries, from a few days before, may well relate to the scene depicted in watercolor number two, above: "Our trail takes us down this branch and, after following it 15 or more miles, we again reached the river. How unlike we left it! From flat land about it, the rocks had taken place and there was nothing but mountains of rock or incredible height binding it in."

Layard met the British ambassador to Turkey, Stratford Canning, who employed him as an unofficial traveller. Canning was interested in archaeology, and Layard's description of the mounds at Nineveh prompted him to finance his own expedition, superintended by Layard. The expeditions took place in 1846 and 1847, and were eventually part sponsored by the trustees of the British Museum. Hence, many of the sculptures were transported to England for the British Museum. (ODNB). Atabely 686 & 688. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. 8vo. Contemporary half calf. First and only edition of this scarce work by Louis Estancelin (1777-1858) on the French Navy and the French colonies. It is organized in two parts: the first dedicated to Navy, gives the history of its administration, and the contemporary state of the fleet. The second is dedicated to the colonies in America, Oceania, Asia and Africa, with observations on Corsica. Fine copy. Polak, 3201.

The Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata was a five-year-long naval blockade imposed on the Argentine Confederation, ruled by Juan Manuel de Rosas, in order to support the Colorado Party in the Uruguayan Civil War. It closed Buenos Aires to naval commerce. The Anglo-French navy trespassed into the internal waters of Argentina to sell their products, since Rosas maintained a protectionist policy to improve the weak Argentine economy. Octavo (203 x 129 mm). Contemporary roan backed marbled boards, vellum tips, marbled endpapers. With six folding engraved plates at the end of the volume. Flat spine sometime decorated gilt, with lettering and numbering labels, the labels and gilt now worn away, spine ends and corners rubbed and worn. Pale dampmark to top margin and outer corner, occasional spotting and the odd mark; withal a good copy. First appearance of Dupuit's important paper on tolls and transport charges, which fills pages 170-248 of the 1849 volume of the Annales des ponts et chaussées. In it, he revisits and develops his earlier paper of 1844, De la mesure de l'utilité des travaux publics. "An engineer and mathematician... Dupuit was led both by his occupations and studies to reflect upon the advantage which the public derive from means of communication, and on the method of measuring with precision that species of advantage, and utility in general. His profound reflections are embodied in two articles in the Annales... The author of these papers 'must probably be credited with the earliest perfect comprehension of the theory of utility,' as Jevons says" (F. Y. Edgeworth in Palgrave's Dictionary of political economy).

Nouvelle edition

Imp. de Pierre Leroux, Boussac 1849 - In 16, pp. (4) + IV + 344.

Dimensioni 440x280 circa. Alfred Guesdon was born in Nantes, June the 13th 1808. Once he finished his classical studies, in 1829, he went to Paris, to study architecture as a pupil of Antoine Martin Garnaud. Starting from 1830, he devoted himself to experimentations and researches on the art of lithography, especially on historical subjects, views and landscapes he took from his many trips around Europe. The distinctiveness of these views is the fact that they are the first representations of the cities from above, realized on board of an air balloon. In 1849 he published the lithographic plates in the famous L'Italie à vol d'oiseau., o storia e descrizione sommaria delle principali città di questo paese, di H. Etiennez, accompagnate da 40 grandi vedute generali, disegnate dal vero da Alfred Guesdon e litografate con due tinte da A. Rouargue, Jules Arnout, A. Cuvillier, A. Guesdon.
