Deutsche Kolonisten im Heiligen Land [Gebundene Ausgabe] Jakob Eisler (Autor)

Hirzel, Stuttgart, 1849. Zusatzinfo 19 schw.-w. Abb.         BERETNING OM CALIFORNIEN OG DETS GULDRIGDOM

Christiania: C. Wulfsberg, 1849. [4],124pp. plus a folding lithographed map. 16mo. Contemporary marbled boards, cloth backstrip. Boards rubbed, extremities worn. Hinges tender, lacking free endpapers, light dampstaining to text, some wrinkling to map. Good. In a half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. The first edition of a screamingly rare Norwegian gold rush guidebook, likely produced for the first wave of Norwegian immigrants to California, which just happened to coincide with the gold rush. The contents reproduce Colonel Richard Barnes Mason's famous report of the discovery of gold from August 17, 1848 as well as a portion of Vizetelly's work; as common to continental guidebooks. The folding map is an interesting production, titled "Kart over Californien 1849" and showing an area from northern Mexico to Oregon, then San Francisco to Santa Fe, with "Indiana" just north of New Mexico (probably, and hopefully, a contemporary designation for Indian Territory, rather than the Hoosier state). "This Norwegian guidebook to California clearly demonstrates the worldwide effect of the Gold Rush" - Kurutz. OCLC records just five institutional copies worldwide, at the Huntington Library, the University of California, Berkeley, Yale, Harvard, and the Danish National Library. COWAN II, p.50. KURUTZ 50. HOWES C64. SABIN 4825. WHEAT GOLD RUSH 69 (not seen).

        KALIFORNIENS GOLD U QUECKSILBER-DISTRICT NACH, THE CALIFORNIA-HERALD

Leipzig: Wilhelm Jurany, 1849. 32pp. Original white illustrated front wrapper featuring a map of California. Rear wrapper lacking. Spine neatly and professionally repaired. Light toning, and a small contemporary inked letter "A" to front wrapper. Small loss to upper corner of last leaf, blank slip mounted to first page of text (covering an old stamp?). Very good. In a half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. Rare German gold rush map and guide from the famous year of the '49er. Third edition, of four published in 1849, all of which are scarce. Friedrich Gerstäcker was the author of several works in German on the California gold rush. The present pamphlet is based on a piece originally published in the CALIFORNIA HERALD. "Gerstäcker provided information on crossing the Isthmus but recommended the Cape Horn route. He also warned Germans against the overland route. In addition to giving travel advice, the author described San Francisco and the gold region and provided quotations from various newspapers" - Kurutz. The map on the front wrapper depicts the Northern California gold region, and includes an inset table with distances from Monterey. According to the text, the map was prepared by an American Army officer, Artillery Lt. Loeser, who bore Mason's famous dispatch to Washington announcing the discovery of gold in California. The wrapper states (and Wheat confirms) that the map was taken from the NEW YORK HERALD (December 26, 1848). In his note to the HERALD, Wheat refers to the map as "of exceptional rarity" and attributes the map to Lieutenant Ord. An early guide to the California Gold Rush from an author who was there between September 1849 and November 1850, where he prospected for gold and set up his own store at Feather River. COWAN II, p.234. HOWES G138. KURUTZ 269. DOROTHY SLOAN 16:71 (this copy, sold for $11,500). SABIN 10017.

THE BOOK NEEDED FOR THE TIMES CONTAINING THE LATEST WELL- AUTHENTICATED FACTS FROM THE GOLD REGIONS; ALSO, A GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL VIEW OF CALIFORNIA, WITH THE DIFFERENT ROUTES, BY LAND AND WATER, AND THEIR DIFFICULTIES...

Boston: Stacy, Richardson & Co., Printers, 1849. 32pp. Facsimile brown printed wrappers. Titlepage toned, with two small paper repairs not affecting text. Outer third of final leaf completed in facsimile, with half of text of final two stanzas on p. 31 supplied. Minor creasing, light to moderate foxing. Good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase and chemise with bookplate on interior. Among the rarest of the gold rush pamphlets, listed in Eberstadt catalogue 135 (circa 1950) at $650 with the following note: "One of the rarest books of the California gold rush, only several copies of which are known to be in existence." The author includes a history of gold discovery and mining in California, personal experiences of miners, and estimates of costs. He describes San Francisco and routes to the mines, and warns of the dangers inherent in the journey and the odds against striking it rich: "Let every man, then, who goes to California, arrange his affairs at home, if he has any to arrange, and MAKE HIS WILL. He may outlive all the perils of the enterprise, and return - either very rich or extremely poor - and live long in the society of his friends; but he runs many chances to reach a very different result." Other pieces of advice are more succinct including "stay at home," and "if you go to California, take any route but [the Isthmus]." Walton further asserts that "our own opinion is, that there is a vast deal of knavery in getting up this gold fever," and that recent reports of discoveries of three-pound gold nuggets are "monstrous nonsense." The pamphlet concludes with a long humorous poem entitled "The Californian Cry," which balances the excitement and anticipation of going to California with cautionary advice. We locate fifteen copies in institutions, though it is our experience that Walton's book is very scare on the market. A great gold rush pamphlet, with clear-headed advice for those caught with gold fever. HOWES W77, "b." EBERSTADT 135:177. COWAN, p.668. KURUTZ 658. VAIL, GOLD FEVER, p.25. WHEAT GOLD RUSH 182 (note).

Paris, Charles d'Orbigny, 1849. 16 parts in 16 (13 text volumes, three plate atlases). Large 8vo. With 288 tissue-guarded, mostly hand-coloured and chromolithographed engraved plates, after Travies and others. A few plates are tinted, or plain, as intended. Uniform contemporary green quarter calf over green pebbled boards. Spines with gilt lines, ornaments and title. Marbled endpapers. All edges speckled.= The first edition of the largest and best natural history encyclopaedia of the mid-19th century, with many thousands of pages, published over an eight- year's period. The list of participating scientists is impressive. We find names such as Arago, Audouin, Becquerel, Brongniart, Deshayes, Desmarest, Alcide d'Orbigny (the author's elder brother), Élie de Beaumont, Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Humboldt, Lucas, Milne Edwards, Moquin-Tandon, Quatrefages, Valenciennes, Van Beneden and many others. The fantastic engraved plates are nearly all very beautifully hand-coloured and show great detail. Birds, reptiles, fish, butterflies, beetles and shells are well-represented. A few plates are only tinted: in particular those dealing with fossils, and one plate (on whales) is plain, as intended. The list of illustrators is as impressive as the list of authors, including Travies (mainly birds), Blanchard (insects), Delarue (insects), Maubert (botany), Oudart (mammals, reptiles, fish), Prêtre (molluscs), Vaillant, Werner, and others. Boards rather rubbed. Text and nearly all plates clean, only two plates a bit age-toned and less than five with a few marginal spots. Internally a very good, unmarked copy indeed. Horn-Schenkling, 16577; Nissen ZBI, 4617.

1849. 8vo. 1 p. on double leaf. To his son-in-law Henry Bicknell, making arrangements to meet: "I have unfortunately accepted an invitation to dine with Lord Tenterden on Wednesday, had it been an other I would have endeavoured to get off - as it is I have done as you desired an pop'd Marochetti into the fire. With the exception of that and Saturday I am disengaged the rest of the week [...]". - In a postscript, he adds that "Turner called on Monday to say he would dine with you tomorrow having mistaken the day - he is to dine with your Governor [Henry Bicknell's father, the art collector Elhanan Bicknell] on Saturday". - Roberts enjoyed a close and warm relationship with his daughter and her husband, no doubt a compensation for his own unhappy marriage.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. Karlsbad, 9. VII. 1849.

1849. ¾ S. 4to.

Zu seinen Schülern zählen u. a.

FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

Each volume sold about one hundred and fifty thousands copies within a month of its publication, and the numerous reprints and translations into almost every literary language have perpetuated Macaulay's ideas almost to this day" (PMM).

[MANUSCRIPT LEGAL DEPOSITION CONCERNING THE ESTATE OF JOHN L. BENNETT OF DALLAS COUNTY, ALABAMA]

[Dallas County, possibly Selma], 1849. [43]pp. Folio. Sheets tied with ribbon at top edge. Old fold lines, minor wear and soiling. Chipping and wear to final leaf. Very good. This lengthy deposition reports the complaint of Henry Atwood and others against the estate of John L. Bennett, who upon moving into Alabama in the 1830s, built up a large slave-holding cotton plantation and incurred many debts which formed an entangled web of interests. The document requests a full inventory of slaves and property brought into Alabama by Bennett in 1834, a description of lands owned by Bennett in partnership with the "South Carolina or Elliott Land Company," and details several large loans taken by Bennett from individuals as well as the Bank of Alabama at Mobile. In order to settle debts, at one point a large group of named slaves and other items were confiscated and "sold said slaves...to the highest and best bidder for cash...so many slaves were necessary to pay off and satisfy and discharge the principal, interests and costs...about the sum of seven thousand dollars." There is a listing of the names of Bennett's slaves, about twenty-five of whom remained as part of the estate. A long and interesting narrative which includes much information on the legal mechanisms of the period, including the confiscation and sale of slaves. The document illustrates wonderfully how much of the "Cotton Kingdom" was built on a mountain of speculative debt, offering the possibility of big gains, but equally the chance of major losses.

        Les Étoiles

Paris: G. De Gonet, [n.d., 1849]. First edition. Two parts in one quarto volume (10 1/2 x 7 1/16 inches; 266 x 180 mm.). [4], xvi, 252; [4], 186, [2] pp. With added hand-colored wood-engraved vignette title in each part, hand-colored engraved portrait of Grandville by Ch. Geoffroy, and twelve hand-colored engraved plates (eleven in the first part, one in the second part) by Ch. Geoffroy after Grandville, all with original tissue-guards.Publisher's black cloth, covers and spine pictorially stamped and lettered in in gilt. yellow coated endpapers. Lower hinge expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Small hole in tissue guard of plate facing page 196. The absolute bare minimum of foxing to margins of a few plates otherwise a very fine and fresh example. A wonderful copy of this lovely book, with exquisite plates after Grandville. ?The compositions of this ?last fairy-tale,? brilliantly engraved on steel by Charles Geoffroy and delicately colored, form a fitting memorial to Grandville. They show that his powers remained unimpaired to the end of his short career. Grandville told his wife on the day he began these designs: ?for too long I have kept my eyes lowered to the earth; now I want to lift them to the heavens? (p. ix). The pattern which he follows is similar to that of Les fleurs animées. Nearly every plate has its beautiful lady, clad in white and adorned with stars, looming in the sky, with varied scenes of earthly life below her. These designs, Grandville?s tranquil refuge from the turmoil that beset his mind, are as charming as they are mysterious. Also included in the volume are an unsigned essay, which remains the most considerable source of biographical information about Grandville, and a fine portrait of him by Geoffroy (I, xvi) with a border of his creations, animals paying him tribute as well as his flower- and star-ladies? (Ray). This posthumously published work (Grandville died on March 17, 1847) was originally issued in fifty parts, the first part appearing in September 1849.         NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPEDITION TO THE RIVER JORDAN AND THE DEAD SEA WITH MAPS AND NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS.

Philadelphia: Lee & Blanchard, 1849. 1st edition. Original gilt tooled publisher?s cloth, Large 8vo, 508 pages. Includes 2 fold-out maps and 28 engraved plates. Bound in at the rear is a list of publications by the publisher. The personal Copy of Rebecca Gratz, the most famous observant American Jewish woman of the 19th Century, with her ownership signature on title page with year (1849) . Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) was a preeminent Jewish American educator and philanthropist. Her parents were observant Jews and active members of Philadelphia?s first synagogue, Mikveh Israel. In 1801, at the age of 20, Rebecca Gratz helped establish the Female Association for the Relief of Women and Children in Reduced Circumstances, which helped women whose families were suffering after the American Revolutionary War. In 1815, after seeing the need for an institution for orphans in Philadelphia, she was among those instrumental in founding the Philadelphia Orphan Asylum. Four years later, she was elected secretary of its Board. She continued to hold this office for forty years. Under Gratz' auspices, a "Hebrew Sunday School" was started in 1838. Gratz became both its superintendent and president and assisted in developing its curriculum, resigning in 1864. Gratz was also one of the founding members of the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society, around November 1819. In 1850, she advocated in The Occident, under the signature A Daughter of Israel, the foundation of a Jewish foster home. Her advocacy was largely instrumental in the establishment of such a home in 1855. She was also involved in the foundation of the Fuel Society and the Sewing Society. Gratz is said to have been the model of Rebecca, the daughter of the Jewish merchant Isaac of York, who is the heroine in the novel ?Ivanhoe, ? by Sir Walter Scott. Scott's attention had been drawn to Gratz's character by Washington Irving, who was a close friend of the Gratz family. The claim has been disputed, but it has also been well sustained in an article entitled "The Original of Rebecca in Ivanhoe", which appeared in The Century Magazine, 1882, pp. 679?682. Gratz never married. Her portrait was painted twice by the noted American artist Thomas Sully. One of those portraits, is on display at the National Museum of American Jewish History. Shortly after Rebecca Gratz died in 1869, her brother, Hyman, founded and financed Gratz College, a teachers? college in Philadelphia, in her memory. Gratz is buried at Mikveh Israel Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Very Good Condition. Material signed by Gratz is rare. (AMR-51-2)
