GENDRON, Ernest
An important, unpublished first-hand account of the voyage of the French naval corvette Alcméne in the South Seas, 1848-1852, including extended descriptions of the loss of crew members to cannibalism in New Caledonia in 1850, and of the vessel's infamous shipwreck at Kaipara on the west coast of New Zealand in 1851, whilst en route from Hobart Town to Tahiti. [Libourne, France, between 1882 and 1887]. Folio, 270 x 215 mm, manuscript, [159] pp, in 4 stitched sections of 23, 38, 48 and 50 pages respectively, the third section with 2 pencil and wash drawings in the text, the fourth section with 3 pencil and wash drawings in the text and one laid down on thick paper (a depiction of the wreck of the Alcméne); the manuscript is very well preserved and complete; [together with] Certificats de mes services à l'État. Signed autograph manuscript, Challans, 22 August 1887; folio, [3] pp, being the complete maritime service record of Ernest Gendron, author of the Alcméne manuscript. Born in Bordeaux in 1833, Ernest Gendron embarked as a "mousse" (equivalent to the Royal Navy's rank of "boy") on the three-masted corvette Alcméne in July 1848. Gendron's impeccably handwritten account of the voyage was evidently set down by him at some point in the 1880s, and is drawn from his original shipboard notebooks. The vessel departed the west coast of France for the Marquesas and Tahiti on 15 July, with a complement of 262 crew and 122 passengers, mostly soldiers, missionaries and Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent De Paul. It reached Rio de Janeiro on 4 September, Valparaiso on 10 January 18 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Map] Monson, E. / Appel, Rudolph.
Compiled, drawn, and published by E. Monson, land surweyor, &c., Berners Street, Ipswich. Printed by Rudolph Appel, Anastatic Printing Office, Ipswich. 1848. Folded 38 x 24,5 cm. Unfolded 76 x 55,5 cm. Lithograph. The map has a blind stamp in the lower right corner with the text "Ipswich E M". An interesting and very detailed map of Ipswich and its surroundings with the Cavalry Barracks and the hospital on the eastern outskirts and on the western side the Eastern Union Railway with a 360 yard tunnel and a proposed station site, in addition to an existing cul de sac station. A number of wind mills are clearly marked outside of town. The parishes of St. Clement, St Helen, St Matthew, St Margaret and St. Mary Stoke are mentioned on the map. The shape and form of the city blocks are carefully delineated. Below we find an index of important buildings as well as colour codes to the different parishes eventhough they are of no use since the map is in black and white, which was the cheapest varaiant sold. It could also be had coloured, mounted on linen and in a slip case. The map is printed with the anastatic method, an early way to make copies directly from the original without engraving or lithography, as long as the original was made of oil based ink. The original was damped with acid and then pressed to a zink plate which in turn became etched. The etched plate could then be used to print copies. Rudolph Appel was the main anastatic printer in England in the late 1840s and the present Ipswich map is a famous example of the method. Edward Monson (1821- 1907) was working as land … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Capelain, John; Nicolle, Edward; Dickson, James.
First edition, sepia issue. A lovely copy of this rare work. Le Capelain produced the ten views here based on original sketches by Nicolle. The ten views are uncaptioned and feature images of the city, Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain and the surrounding hills. The son of a Jersey printer, Le Capelain (1812-1848) received most of his training in the family business. His artistic talent came to the notice of many with the publication of his watercolour of Mount Orgueil in Moss's Views of the Channel Islands in 1829. He lived in England for a short while in 1832 and travelled to Scotland and France where he continued to paint. On the visit of Queen Victoria to Jersey, he was commissioned to produce an album of watercolours to comemorate it. The Queen was so delighted with The Queen's Visit to Jersey (1847), she asked him to produce a series of views of the Isle of Wight. Sadly, Le Capelain died of consumption before he was able to complete the commission. Abbey's note is curious, attributing authorship to Le Capelain, who never travelled further than France. Unfortunately, very little is known about Nicolle. Seven copies of this work located on OCLC. Just two copies have appeared at auction in the past 30 years: one in mordern half morocco, the other disbound. Abbey, 710. Borba de Moraes, 226.

Abolition of Slavery]. [Oregon Bill]. Webster, Daniel
Press of T.R. Marvin, Boston 1848 - 8vo. 24 pp. Original printed wrappers. Webster responds to the Missouri Compromise and Pro-Slavery Senators. The present volume contains the texts of two speeches by Webster, both concerning the admission of states as slave or non slave-holding. Webster's speech on the Oregon Bill before the U.S. Senate is noteworthy. The background: "In 1848 a Bill for the organization of a government for the Territory of Oregon came from the House of Representatives, and, while it was pending in the Senate, [Stephen] Douglas caused an amendment to be adopted, by which the Missouri Compromise was revived, and declared to be 'in full force and binding for the future organization of the Territories of the United States, in the same sense, and -with the same understanding, with which it was originally adopted.' The effect of this was to declare that, north of the parallel of 36° 30', slavery should he prohibited, and that, south of that line, new Territories might be organized, in which slavery could be established. The House disagreed in this amendment, and the question then came whether the Senate should recede from it. Mr. Webster at once entered into this discussion [.] Having pointed out that the amendment was not germane to the object of the bill, which was simply to make a territorial government for Oregon, he reiterated his opinions respecting the whole subject of slavery in its various political relations. That the Constitution recognized a particular description of slavery in certain States belonging to the Union at the time of its adoption, and g … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mr. Webster at once entered into this discussion [...] Having pointed out that the amendment was not germane to the object of the bill, which was simply to make a territorial government for Oregon, he reiterated his opinions respecting the whole subject of slavery in its various political relations. That the Constitution recognized a particular description of slavery in certain States belon … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Copley
n.p., c. 1848. 4.25" x 7". "Four page letter on laid paper with 3 sides left blank. 4.25"" x 7"". Signed ""Lord Lyndhurst"". Expected folds. Fine condition.Lord Lyndhurst, three times Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, also known as John Copley (son of the famous painter), pens a short letter circa 1848, after leaving his position as Chancellor, requesting ""Gentleman / I will thank you to send me the (illegible) in page 9 of catalogue of 1848 - the linseed, and universal grain (illegible) - £5.15.6 ... During this time there was much interest in cultivation of crops providing a lot of nutritional value in a small area, and the introduction of soil enhancing nitrogen fixing crops. But no doubt this short letter was also in contemplation of the calamity occurring in tha … [Click Below for Full Description]
