Alexander DUMAS
Testo in lingua francese.

THACKERAY, William Makepeace.
London: Bradbury and Evans,, 1848. With Illustrations on Steel and Wood by the Author. Octavo (206 x 128 mm). Recent red morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, gilt titles and decoration to spine in compartments, frame gilt to covers, wide turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, with the engraved advertisement for The Great Hoggarty Diamond bound in before the frontispiece as issued. Etched frontispiece with tissue-guard, vignette title page, 38 plates, wood-engraved vignettes and similar initials after Thackeray. Minor rubbing to extremities; an excellent copy. First edition in book form, with the three points traditionally taken to denote first issue (drop-head title in rustic lettering to page 1, the "Marquis of Steyne" vignette on page 336, later suppressed, and "Mr. Pitt" for "Sir Pitt" on page 453, line 31), although, as the novel was originally published in 20 parts between January 1847 and July 1848, such points conceivably would have been amended before serialization was completed. "Modern editions of this classic novel almost invariably omit Thackeray's vignettes and often give only a selection from his etchings. The reader is deprived thereby not only of much amusement but also of important clues to the meaning of the story" (Ray).

Horne, G. and Grentham [Grantham ?] , B. V., Hewitt, L.
Horne, Bangalore 1848 - 19 pages of manuscript document ca. 7" x 4.5" in a gathering of 8 leaves stitched within a four leaf printed fragment, cream color and light blue paper, slight chipping, light foxing, generally very good. This is an oddly assembled British Army manuscript with four military orders for the positioning and movement of advance and rear guard cavalry troops. One order states that it is to "be copied into every drill book & adhered to." The orders were issued by two officers of the 15th Hussars at Bangalore , India in 1848. There are some illustrations as well. Most of the manuscript was issued by Lieutenant and Adjutant Horne who's initial looks like an S. or G. in different places. (There was a Captain George Horne who served in Crimea in the 1850's) . The second name appears to be B. V. Grentham, but is probably Grantham and another order appears to be issued by or copied by L. Hewitt. One order is dated Nov. 19, 1848. The four leaf printed section into which the 8 leaf manuscript has been stitched appears to be from a book published by Parker, Furnivall and Parker in London. The "Historical Records of the British Army" series prepared by Richard Cannon was published by this group in the late 1830's to the 1850's. Overall, and interesting group of records for how the British Army worked in India. [Attributes: First Edition]
