Evelyn, John.
William Pickering, 1848. Here in a delightful signed binding, this affectionate account of Mrs. Godolphin's life, by writer and diarist John Evelyn (1620-1706), was passed down through his family until 1847 when Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt allowed its publication with the assistance and editorship of Samuel Wilberforce. She chose Evelyn as a mentor and paternal figure; they remained close until her early death due to complications from childbirth. The volume, one of the third edition, is illustrated by a => pensive engraved frontispiece of Mrs. Goldophin, by William Humphreys, from an original painting by Matthew Dixon. The work also includes five genealogical tables. Binding: Black morocco-covered boards with beveled edges, covers framed by two sets of blind double-rules and with an embossed center medallion; spine with raised bands, gilt lettering, blind-stamped devices in compartments, and blind rules extending from bands onto covers. Varnhagen von Ense, Karl August
zus. 6692 S. geb. (Joachim Schondorff, 1960)

Douglass, Frederick
Rochester: North Star Office, 1848. xvi.pp. + 125pp. + blank leaf. First printing of this state. Bound in the original quarter roan leather and green printed paper over the boards. Includes the 1845 preface will William Lloyd Garrison and the letter of the same year from Wendell Phillips. The title page bears the Boston: The Anti-Slavery Office, 1847. The sheets of this re-issue were taken from William Lloyd Garrison's office to Rochester after Douglass' falling out with Garrison over the issue of payment for contributions to The Liberator. Douglass decided to move to Rochester in 1848 to start his own paper, The North Star. Apparently he took these sheets and had them bound by Owen Morris (his advertisement makes up the green printed paper over the back board). Another copy, in similar condition, was sold by Swann Galleries in 2015 for $20,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $25-$35,000. The cataloger there stated that they located seven copies: three in private holdings, one defective copy owned by a dealer, and two in institutional collections (Harvard & the New York Historical Society). Based on a search of Worldcat, it appears that their copy ended up at Clements. Upon further research, it appears that there are two more copies at the University of Rochester, making a total of nine copies, not counting this one. The heel of the front joint has started. Some staining to the paper covered boards. Corners bumped and rubbed through. Text foxed with occasional staining. Gift inscription in pencil on the front pastedown (the Bennett family of Ovid, NY in Seneca County). F … [Click Below for Full Description]
