[VIENNA UPRISING] LÖVE, Paul
[Wien]: Gredruckt bei Joseph Ludwig, [1848]. First Edition. Proposal issued shortly before the Vienna Uprising of October, 1848, during which violence broke out between the laboring class of the city and the Hapsburg army as the latter was trying to leave in order to quell the Hungarian Revolution. Löve, most likely a university student at the time, proposes that Vienna would best be defended if the walls surrounding the inner city were to be dismantled (they would be irreparable if damaged by enemy bombardment) and the moat filled in for building development. Unlocated in OCLC or KVK, though noted in James E. Walsh, 1848 Austrian Revolutionary Broadsides and Pamphlets (1976), p. 143, dating the broadside to June 31, 1848. Löve issued another five or six titles listed in Walsh, one signed in type "Redacteur [I] der Studentenzeitung," (editor of the student newspaper); another "Redakteur des Stürmers" (editor of "The Strikers"). Broadside (50.75x42cm.) printed blackletter; previous folds, two corners neatly clipped not approaching text, else Very Good to Near Fine.

Motiv Vogelmotiv Sittiche.
32 x 15 x 6 cm (H x B x T), Kristallglas, inkl. Batterie.

RATTRAY, James.
London Hering, 1848. First edition. Folio (61 x 43.5 cm), title printed in red and black, additional hand-coloured lithograph title page, dedication leaf, 29 finely hand-coloured lithographs on 25 leaves by Robert Carrick and others after Rattray, many heightened with gum arabic, a few short marginal tears closed, occasional light toning and spotting, each lithograph with descriptive letterpress, list of subscribers, contemporary red half morocco, red morocco title label to upper cover, neat repairs to extremities, a very good copy. The finest illustrated book on Afghanistan, of great value for showing us the ways of life and customs of the country. 'Rattray traveled to Afghanistan in 1841 and participated in the latter half of the First Anglo-Afghan War. The artist dedicated this collection to the Candahar Force that he belonged to and the British and Indian officers who participated in this war. In many cases, the artist's commentary, rather than being an explanation of the pictures themselves, is an explanation about the harrowing experiences of British troops in Afghanistan, which the artist faced by himself or heard from others. Characteristic features of Rattray's works are his detailed and vivid depictions of the people living in Afghanistan. In both his works and commentary, he takes great care in depicting clothing. Rattray's work also provides us with a wide range of information that is of historical and ethno-historical interest, such as the forms of worship at tombs and mosques, and the imperial rituals of the Dorranis. Even though Rattray was a soldier, he had … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thackeray, William Makepeace
Bradbury and Evans, London, 1848. The first edition, first issue of Thackeray's masterpiece. Octavo, bound in full red morocco by Bayntun Riviere in Cosway-style binding with a miniature portrait of Thackeray inset into the front panel, engraved frontispiece, engraved additional title, and 38 engraved plates, spine in gilt compartments, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, ivory silk doublures. The first issue, with the headline on page one in rustic type; "Mr. Pitt" on page 453; and the suppressed woodcut of Mr. Steyne on page 336. Van Duzer 231. In fine condition. An exceptional example. Vanity Fair was Thackeray's first major work and established his continued high standing among Victorian novelists. "After that book [Vanity Fair] there could be no doubt about the greatness of its writer. at last the novel of real life on the great scale has been discovered" (Saintsbury, in Grolier, English Prose Fiction, 102). "As Thackeray's masterpiece this novel has outlasted the great majority of his work. The Waterloo scenes are among the best narrative passages in an English novel. Of her type, Becky has never been bettered, and the author's famed irony still stings" (Farrow, 50). It has been the subject of numerous television and film adaptations, most recently into the 2004 film directed by Mira Nair, starring Reese Witherspoon, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Bob Haskins. Ruge, Arnold (ed.).
Leipzig, Verlagsbureau / Arnold Ruge, 1848. 8vo. (2), 340, (2) pp. Contemp. marbled boards with ms. spine label. First edition of this collection; extremely rare. "The 'Academy' offers a critique of our contemporary spiritual development and seeks to advance in general, in writing and aesthetically the conditions of science, art, and political life" (Ruge). In his first essay, Ruge pronounces: "The religion of our time seeks man himself and the realization of his nature." This is followed by his correspondence with the Brussels politician Von Kolldorf about "The Religion of Freedom and Poetry". In his political letter to the Germans "What will come of it?" Ruge professes himself a revolutionary even before the revolution and celebrates the outbreak of the February Revolution in France. His "Final Presentation against Censorship Courts and Censorship in Germany" is an apology of his book "The Political Poets of Our Time", appending the ban issued by the Prussian High Court of Censorship on 1 February 1848. In his thirteen "Politican Theses", written under the impression of the February Revolution, Ruge formulates the main features of his humanistic ideal of the state. "The influence of his study of English constitutional theory and political life is obvious" (cf. W. Neher). - In 1824, while still a student of classics, the German politician and writer Arnold Ruge (1802-80) was sentenced to 14 years of incarceration for his activities in the liberal and nationalistic student unions. He served six years, using the time to study. After his release he qualified as a university t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Front board reattached. Minor pencil marginalia. At one time the leading consulting surgeon in Scotland, James Syme (1799-1870) gained the nickname "Napoleon of surgery, " but whether this was due to his surgical skill or his combative personality is not known. Sophie Cruvelli was a noted German soprano. "Verdi's early operas suited her voice, which was large and powerful if not always under perfect control, and in 1848 she sang Elvira (Ernani) and Abigaille (Nabucco, given as Nino) at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, as well as Leonore (Fidelio) and Countess Almaviva. She appeared in Milan in 1849-50, singing roles including Odabella, Elvira, Abigaille, Rosina and Norma. She made her Paris début in 1851 as Elvira, and at the Théâtre Italien she also sang in Norma, La sonnambula, Fidelio and Semiramide. In 1854 she transferred to the Opéra (her performance is reported in Dwight's Journal, iv (1853-4), 150-51), appearing as Valentine (Les Huguenots), Julia (La vestale) and Rachel (La Juive). She then returned to London, where she sang in Rossini's Otello, in Fidelio and as Donna Anna at Covent Garden. She created Hélène in Les vêpres siciliennes at the Paris Opéra in 1855, and retired the following year after her marriage to Baron Vigier." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson.
