(R. E. Burrowes)
Quarto volume in half morocco, measuring 10.75 x 8.5 inches, containing 39 mounted paintings on thin transparent mica, each measuring 4.5 x 3 inches. These were collected by R. E. Burrowes, Bourton Court (Somerset); he was engaged at the Punjab Campaign and was active in the 1st and 2nd sieges of Mooltan, where he was wounded twice in late 1848 and early 1849; he was also active in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny of 1857. These are likely from the Punjab region and acquired when he was there in the late 1840s. Very rare and in very good condition. Mica paintings were produced in many parts of India, were an important feature of the tourist trade in the mid 19th century, but because of their brittleness are very rare on the market. This is an exceptional group. Very Good.

HOFFMANN, Dr. Heinrich.
Leipsic: Friedrich Volckmar, 1848. 24 pages printed and hand-coloured on rectos only. Original printed paper-covered boards. Quarto. First English edition. Lacking blank free end-papers (if required); spine expertly restored; corners and edges of boards worn; some light soiling and staining; else a remarkably clean, fresh copy of this nursery classic.Originally published in Germany in 1845 as Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder, with only 15 pages, the book was expanded and renamed Struwwelpeter in 1847. Hoffmann instructed his publishers to issue the book in strong boards but with a frail paper spine, hoping that children would quickly read the book to pieces, and parents be forced to buy another copy; this accounts for the dearth of copies surviving in original boards. As with all genuine copies of the first edition, the government's tax stamp appears on the upper board.

MEDHURST Walter Henry
1848. First edition. Chinese characters interspersed throughout the text. 8vo. New paper boards, printed paper label on spine. Partly foxed and browned, overall still a good copy. Ex-libris of John Lawson on front free pastedown. [ii], 170pp. Shanghae, Printed at the Mission Press, Medhurst (1796-1857) continued the theological/linguistic dispute where the Jesuits had left off: In the 1840s a controversy erupted amongst the Protestant missionaries as to the proper way to translate the term 'God' 'Theos' or 'Elohim' into Chinese. Was it going to be tian (Heaven), shen (Ghost or Spirit) or shangdi (Supreme Deity) or tiandi (Heavenly Deity)? Should the character for di (Deity) - which can be singular or plural and includes higher and lesser gods - be used at all? Furthermore tian (heaven) was often used synonymously with shangdi (Supreme Deity). Medhurst traces the development of the terms in Classical Chinese literature (from the Book of Odes to Confucianism and Daoism, as well as definitions in Chinese dictionaries) to the present day (when Morrison and Milne used shen or combinations with shen) to analyse the linguistic and cultural conundrums and finally comes down in favour of tiandi (Heavenly Deity). ?Had the Chinese not been in the habit of exalting their departed progenitors and ancient sages to the ranks of gods, the word Te (di) alone, (as defined in the Imperial dictionary to be one of the names of Heaven or the Divinity, and the names of various spiritual beings the object of spiritual worship) would have been sufficiently distinct; but seeing that they have adopte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Identical in detail- inscriptions, signatures, library stickers, and watermarks all created by hand on an original first edition. On first review we believed ourselves that it may have been the original. Investigation revealed this facsimile was authorized in 1928 in Paris while the original was under the ownership of Mrs. Florence Meyer Blumenthal. The Edgar Allan poe Society of Baltimore lists that this authorized facsimile was produced in 50 copies- with current additional surviving copies unknown. Poe's extensive notes and corrections in this copy reflect his intentions to produce a second edition, but it was not to be: he died the following year.

Schumann, Robert, Komponist (1810-1856)
Dresden, 8. I, 1848. 4 SS. 8vo. [Click Below for Full Description]

MALIBRAN, Maria 1808-1836
Catalogue d'une Belle Collection de Lettres Autographes, no. 409, p. 67. Paris: Laverdet, 1848.Malibran, a highly distinguished Spanish mezzo-soprano, "was the daughter of the elder Manuel García and sister of the mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot. She studied with her father, a rigorous teacher whose harshness towards her was notorious, and made her London début at the King's Theatre in June 1825 as Rosina (Il barbiere)... To judge from the parts adapted for her by both Donizetti and Bellini, the compass (g to e ‴), power and flexibility of Malibran's voice was extraordinary. Her early death turned her into something of a legendary figure with writers and poets during the later 19th century." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online. A distinguished American mezzo-soprano, "Horne had a voice of extraordinary range, rich and tangy in timbre, with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top... In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene, proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist, singing lieder, mélodies, Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.. 1-1/2 pp. of a bifolium. Small octavo. With integral address panel. In French (with translation).Malibran has just written to Mme. de Fevre asking that she come to her home at 3 p.m. to rehearse the "Proverb." The singer goes on to say that "we shall have a rehearsal at noon of [?Grétry's] "Savetier et le Financier." The singer ask … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Girls' Education] [Commonplace Book] Ada N. Kenney
Brimfield, MA, 1848. Columbian Writing Book #7 Designed for Use in Schools. Blue stitched paper wraps with flag and manicule motifs to front cover and general directions for proper handwriting on rear cover. Completely filled and comprised of 20 densely written manuscript pages in ink and pencil, created by Ada N. Kenney of Brimfield, Mass, who leaves her ownership information in pencil on the front wrap. A lovely and fascinating historical document tracing both the method by which a young woman developed her hand as well as how such lessons served the additional purpose of indoctrinating her into socially-appropriate femininity. Ada Kenney's copybook contains a neat and precise hand throughout, which suggests that she was educated and belonged to the rising middle class. Meticulous and organized, Ada breaks her book into two clear sections. The first 9 pages contain precisely copied and repeated sentences such as "Assiduity in labor produces fame and fortune," "Cherish sentiments of charity towards all men," "Discretion of speech is superior to eloquence," and "Immodest words are in all cases indefensible." As the lines get repeated 19 times each in the alphabetical order dictated by the first word, it is clear that Ada is being trained in an elegant cursive. Yet the content of the lines and their repetition also serve as lessons to her about the value of female silence, virtue, and chastity. By the second half of the book, Ada commits another 9 pages to carefully copying out poetry; and here, her choices push up against the demure repetitions of the previous pages. Thackeray, William Makepeace
London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848. First edition. An attractive, finely bound copy of the author's defining work. Mixed issue with the heading on p. 1 in standard type (not rustic), but with the illustration of "the marquis of Steyne" on p. 336 (later suppressed). Illustrated by the author in 40 steel engraved plates and numerous woodcuts throughout the text. In a sturdy, modern three-quarter leather binding over marbled boards. Raised bands and gilt title on the spine. Contents leaves and list of plates with tearing near the gutter, some loss of text. Internal contents generally Very Good with moderate to heavy foxing on the plates. Considered by its author to be a novel without a hero, Vanity Fair follows the path of the social climbing Becky Sharp as she seeks to improve her position within the Victorian social strata. One of literature's most important early iterations of the female anti-hero, Miss Sharp helped to expose the truth that women were not merely domesticated angels but could be just as ambitious and driven as their male counterparts; and her foil Amelia reveals that even an apparent paragon of femininity was imperfect. A contemporary reviewer noted "Thakeray's theory of characterization proceeds generally on the assumtion that the acts of men and women are directed not by principle but by instincts...There is not a person in the book who excites the reader's respect, and not one who fails to exite his interest. The morbid quickness of the author's perceptions of the selfish element, even in his few amiable characters, is a constant source of surprise. The novel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thackeray, William Makepeace
Bradbury & Evans, London, 1848. First edition of Thackeray's comic masterpiece, illustrated by the author. "A novel without a hero," Vanity Fair follows the entangled adventures of two school friends, the gentle, trusting Amelia Sedley and the calculating Becky Sharp, as they come of age during the Napoleonic Wars. "Are not there little chapters in everybody's life, that seem to be nothing, and yet affect all the rest of the history? Let us then step into the coach with the Russell-square party, and be off to the Gardens." First issue, with the heading on page 1 in rustic type, the woodcut of the debauched Marquis of Steyne on 336 (suppressed in later issues, as based too obviously on the late Lord Hertford), and "Mr. Pitt" for "Sir Pitt" on 453. A fine copy, splendidly bound by Riviere & Son. Octavo, measuring 8 x 5 inches: xvi, 624. Early twentieth-century polished calf, boards triple-ruled in gilt, raised bands, spine compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, red and green morocco spine labels, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispiece, illustrated title page, 38 full-page plates, and 150 wood-engraved illustrations throughout text. A few faint scratches to rear board. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Ladies' Flower Garden of Ornamental Greenhouse plants by Mrs. Loudon 1848 William Smith, 113 Fleet Street London Bradbury and Evans printers with 42 gorgeous plates of rare exotic flowers Mrs. Loudon's classic botanical work on greenhouse plants, with 42 beautiful full-page hand-colored lithographic plates with descriptions Contents, list of plates, introduction 215 pages 3/4 leather and marbled boards, marbled end pages book measures 8 1/2" by 11" and about 1 1/4". Jane Wells Loudon was one of the 19th century's major compilers of flower books. [This work, together with her Ornamental Annuals (1840) and British Wild Flowers (1846) were "much prized for their attractive illustrations" (Magnificent Botanical Books, 237).] Greenhouse Plants focuses on exotic plants indigenous to such locales as Japan, Australia, South Africa and South America, whose plants "are, generally speaking, more beautiful than any included in my previous works, as they are natives of countries where the sun has most power, and where consequently colors are the brightest" (Introduction). Loudon's artistic groupings of like flowers-- considered unusual for the times-- were immediately popular among gardeners throughout England. In 1831 she had married John Claudius Loudon, himself a renowned landscape gardener and horticultural writer. The plates were probably produced by the lithographic firm of William Day & Son (cited in the 1849 edition of her Bulbous Plants), frequently referred to as "Day … [Click Below for Full Description]

HILDEBRANDT, Eduard.
Berlin: Alexander Duncker, c.1848. Tinted lithograph with facsimile autograph, finished by hand. Printed area 315 x 360mm. Marginal tear repaired. A scene of Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) at work in his study, taken from a watercolour by fellow Prussian Eduard Hildebrandt (1818-68), executed when the famed explorer was nearly eighty. The facsimile hand writing states that it is a true representation of his study while he was writing his treatise 'Kosmos' (a term he reintroduced from ancient Greek). The explorer and painter had become friends, and Humboldt had been able to introduce Hildebrandt to some important clients: Hildebrandt's first trip to America was to paint Rio de Janeiro for Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. This led to a world tour, 1860 - 1862, which included stops in the Middle East, India, Singapore, Thailand, Macao, Hong Kong, China, The Philippines, Japan and the United States. A folio of his works from his round-the-world voyage were published as chromolithographs in 1864 in Berlin under the title of 'Reise Um Die Erde' (Journey around the Earth).
