1 vol. 4to. 2 engraved plates and illustrations. Contemporary half sheep. First edition of this reference work, maybe the most important for maritime history. It gathers all the definitions of nautical terms in every languages and from all times. It is the result of six years of work by Auguste Jal (1795-1873), archivist then Historiographe de la Marine. Monumental work, with full definitions, not mere equivalents (Craig). Fine copy in contemporary binding. Polak, 4660.

Petit, Ces peines obscures, p. 196.

Bennett, professor of the institutes of medicine at Edinburgh, helped to introduce a more science-based approach in medical education in the latter half of the 19th century. He was the first medical educator to institute practical classes in the teaching of physiology; also, unlike many of his colleagues, he embraced the microscope as a useful tool and was the first to teach its clinical use systematically, along with its uses in the teaching of pathology and physiology. Bennett’s Researches first appeared in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal, as indicated on the separate title of the duplicate part. See Garrison-Morton.com 1858, Bennett’s paper on cod liver oil; and 3061, his pioneering description of leukemia.

WATERCOLOURS BY DARWIN'S FRIEND. A Fine Watercolour Album of Fungi. 1848-61

Worcestershire et al 1848-1861 - A collection of sixty numbered leaves with watercolours of fungi on rectos (plus one loosely inserted), some folding, many of the drawings annotated in pencil, with botanical names and places, chiefly Worcestershire (e.g. Nunnery Wood, The Holt, Henwick), several dated 1861 and one dated 1848. Pencil inscription above 'James Buckman 1814-1884', sheet size approximately 25.5 x 6.75cm (10 x 17ins), contemporary half calf gilt, spine label gilt lettered 'Fungi J. Buckman', large 8vo. James Buckman, friend of Charles Darwin, was professor of geology, botany and zoology at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester from 1848 to 1863. He founded the college's botanical garden, and conducted a number of important botanical experiments, some of which were mentioned in Darwin's 'Origin of Species'. Buckman is also cited in Darwin's Variations. He regularly corresponded with Darwin and is also cited in his published letters. He later edited various editions of Darwin's works. James Buckman was also a friend of botanist Edwin Lees (1800-1887) who, with Buckman's encouragement, founded the Worcestershire Naturalists' Club. Lees proposed that the club compile a much-needed flora of the county, which was eventually published as 'The Botany of Worcestershire', and it was his suggestion that the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club initiated in 1868 the annual fungus forays in Herefordshire for which it became nationally famous.         The Bengal Obituary: or a Record to perpetuate the Memory of Departed Worth: being a Compilation of Tablets and Monumental Inscriptions from Various Parts of the Bengal and Agra Presidencies, to which is added Biographical Sketches and Memoirs of such as have pre-eminently distinguished themselves in the History of British India, since the Formation of the European Settlement to the Present Time.

Calcutta: Printed for Holmes & Co. at the Baptist Missionary Press, 1848 - Octavo (236 × 155 mm)) Contemporary "native" half sheep, black moiré cloth boards, lettered in gilt direct to the spine, dotted roll to the bands which are framed by p[airs of gilt rules. A little rubbed and bumped, light browning to the text, but overall very good. First edition. Uncommon, just 8 locations on Copac. Fascinating reference work, well described in a contemporary review in the Spectator: "This book, which has travelled to us from Calcutta contains the epitaph of the Europeans who have been buried in the Presidencies of Bengal and Agra, provided they have got a monument or tombstone - a something, in short, to preserve their name. The arrangement is geographical, according to churchyards or burial-places, but there is an index of names. There is no respect for persons in the book: the corporal is admitted as freely as his colonel; and the space he occupies depends upon himself or his executors - it is measured by the length of his sepulchral eloquence. The biographical sketches relate to distinguished or remarkable persons who have been in India, though they may not have been buried there, always provided they have a monumental inscription in the Presidencies, if only a tablet. Among these sketches are Hastings, Wellesley, and Coote; but we have not found Clive - a singular omission. The lives of the larger men are not of much account, but those of the more purely Indian celebrities are useful; and the book is curious altogether" (Spectator, 22 December 1849). An attractive and well-preserved copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

1848 - Mexico’s official instructions to engage in privateering activities against the United States. July, 26, 1848. Mexico. In folio (315 mm x 218 mm). 48 pp. Manuscript on stationery paper of the Ministerio de Guerra y Marina of Mexico, stitched, as issued, with contemporary ribbon. Recent calf-backed cloth clamshell-case, spine lettered in gilt. Very good, minor browning and soiling as expected, else fine. Rare Mexican manuscript, with the privateering regulations signed at the outbreak of the Mexican-American War by Mexican President Mariano Paredes y Arillaga. The document is directed to Jose Maria Tornel, Secretary of War and Marine. Paredes took power at the beginning of 1846 and resigned just two days after signing the present document. With the outbreak of the war, the United States instituted a blockade of Mexican ports. Since the Mexican fleet was negligible, its best hope was to enlist the aid of privateers to capture American vessels and run the blockade. The Mexican Congress authorized the issuance of privateer commissions on June 15, 1846. The manuscript records the regulations and guide-lines for the recent authorization of piracy, including 109 articles governing privateering operations against the United States, issued by the Secretary of War and Marine, Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil. The privateers were to operate against the U.S. Gulf Coast, U.S. naval forces off California, and American commercial shipping. Foreigners who secured commissions were to be considered Mexican nationals. While the threat of foreigners accepting commissions was worrisome, only two Spanish vessels were actually outfitted. The manuscript is rare; we have been unable to trace any other copies of it. A printed version of it appeared in 1846 (Cf. Sabin, 68869). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Quite a few Landseer prints were etched, lithographed or engraved by others.] N 1 Return from deer stalking [1826]; N 2 Game card [1825], a later state with ruled lines and heading Woburn Abbey; N 3 Game card [1825], ditto; N 4 Landscape, a doorway under a tree in front water with a swan, Signed [/s/] EL [1825]; N 5 The sweeps, /s/ EL [1822]; N 6 The frog [AKA Dogs worrying a frog], /s/ EL 1822; N 7 Low life [1822]; N 8 The traveller's rest [1825]; N 9 The mountain torrent, /s/ EL [1825]; N 10 The watchman, /s/ EL 1825; N 11 The four dogs [heads] [AKA four Irish greyhounds], /s/ EL 1825; N 12 The donkeys, /s/ EL 1824 & Old horses, /s/ EL 1821[?], the two on one plate; N 13 The ladies' pets, /s/ EL 1823; N 14 The beggar, /s/ EL [1824]; N 15 The warren, /s/ EL 1826; N 16 The eagle, /s/ EL 1825; N 17 Highland shepherd's dog, /s/ EL 1824, possible later state with background retouched by J. Landseer, the artist's father. These are etchings pulled on India paper using the chine-collé process to bond the etchings on to thick, heavy under-sheets. As to most plates, a warm beige background color behind the image. Each sheet 48 x 32 cm. Most sheets with the Gambart blind-stamp in the lower margin. All sheets with tissue guards. The sheet margins are all quite foxed but, as to the impressions themselves, many of the images have scant foxing, perhaps on account of the putative overlay. A few of the images with moderate to pronounced foxing, especially N 1. Mounted to the front FEP is a handwritten note, "This beautiful Series of Etchings by Mr. Edwin Landseer, the great painter of Animal Life, were etched by him nearly Thirty years since. Single impressions before their publication for sale in 1848 have been sold for eight and even ten guineas each, so highly were they prized. Few impressions having been taken from the plates previously to publication rendered them highly prized curiosities to Amateurs." No doubt Landseer pulled etchings from the copper plates between the time of making each copper plate and 1848, the first publication year. Quantity and distribution unknown but believed quite limited. Though etchings by Landseer are far from numerous the engravings and etchings after his works are otherwise. It became the fashion in the second half of the 19th century to collect these. An interesting association copy. Front pastedown with the handsome armorial bookplate of John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick [1770-1859]. Lord Northwick was an English peer, a prominent landowner and a collector of art works. It seems highly likely that he would have acquired this Landseer publication new. Sources: The Athenæum: Journal of English and Foreign Literature, Science, and the Fine Arts.         Ornamental Map of the United States & Mexico

New York: Ensign & Thayer, 1848 - ENSIGN & THAYER. Ornamental Map of the United States & Mexico. New York: Ensign & Thayer, 1848. Lithograph map, with full original hand color, sheet dimensions: 31 x 23 inches (excellent condition, edges reinforced, slight chipping on top right edge). Created at a time of incredible expansion for the nation, this map boldly proclaims in no uncertain terms that America is poised to emerge as a dominant global force. 1848 was a pivotal year that saw the U.S. on the cusp of victory in the Mexican American War, which ended with Mexico being forced to cede almost half of her territory at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on the 4th of July of that year. Texas had become a state in 1845, and California, as well as the area to the north which would become Oregon and Washington State were being recognized as U.S. Territories. This sudden addition of land was the first major expansion of the country since the Louisiana Purchase and began the great migration to the west and southwest that continues to this day. Portraits of Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott-two heroes of the war with Mexico-flank a central image of a mythic-looking and approving George Washington framed in flags and sunbeams. At the base of the sheet, two scenes depict an ancient Mexican culture that has just be defeated by the upstart American conquerors. The "Panoramic View from New York to the Pacific Ocean by the Contemplated Oregon Railroad", located between the map and the top register, is a highly stylized cross-section of the newly transcontinental America. This pictorial expression of 'Manifest Destiny' anticipates the construction of a transnational railway more than twenty years before such an ambition was realized. In "An American Exhibiting to the Sovereigns of Europe the Progress of his country" a healthy Walt Whitman-looking figure in fashionable and casual dress stands on the battlement of a fort bristling with cannon, confidently gesturing to a vista depicting scenes that embody the virtues of America's natural resources and the ingenuity of her people. The European dignitaries are outfitted in stuffy formal garb and look sallow, old, paunched, and intimidated. The landscape features a crowded river filled with steam and sailing ships, rich farmlands dotting lush fields, and bold cloud-piercing mountains surmounted only by an ultra-modern balloon rising in the sky. This juxtaposition was meant to highlight the difference between the Old world and the New, with America as the leaders of the future-a message that the readers of that time must have heard loud and clear. This patriotic tableau, richly ornamented, was the ultimate statement that the popular notion of 'Manifest Destiny' was being fulfilled in the west. In the map of the United States and Mexico, which makes up the centerpiece of the tableau, the United States is shown to extend from sea to sea. Her new possessions include the vast new territory of 'New California', occupying all of the modern states of California, Nevada, Utah, and most of Arizona. New Mexico runs down the length of the upper Rio Grande, while an enlarged Texas (which became a U.S. state in 1845), prominently occupies the center of the map. Also featured is the Oregon Territory, in the Pacific Northwest, which officially became part of the U.S. in 1846, while the vast 'Missouri Territory' and the 'Indian Territory' (the latter still reserved for Native Americans) occupy most the Great Plains.
