        THE GREAT HOGGARTY DIAMOND

1848. [[a Victorian rarity]] New York: Harper & Brothers, n.d. [1848]. 6 pp undated ads. Original buff printed wrappers. First Edition, issued as No. 102 in Harper's "Library of Select Novels" -- published two or three months prior to the UK edition (which was titled "The History of Samuel Titmarsh and the Great Hoggarty Diamond"). This tale had actually appeared in Fraser's Magazine in 1841, the text of which Harper "borrowed," seven years later, for this cheaply-produced American edition (published in November or December 1848); Thackeray's English publisher was thus prompted to come out with the above-mentioned UK edition in early 1849. In the tale the young Thackeray explored what goes into being "a gentleman," from a moral viewpoint -- it is "a work filled with instances of wit, humor, satire and pathos which found a more-ordered if not a fresher expression in his later and longer works. For freshness, indeed,... The Great Hoggarty Diamond can scarcely be surpassed. The characters... are full of life; the book is crammed with honest fun; and for pure pathos, the death of the child, and the meeting of the husband and wife over the empty cradle, stands, if not alone in its own line, at least in the company of very few such scenes in English fiction." [NNDB]~This is a copy of the first issue, with the publisher's address still "82 Cliff Street" on front cover and title page, and with the full string of mispaginated pages at the end (the pagination jumps from 67 to 78, and continues that way until its conclusion six pages later at 84).~Condition is near-fine, with very little wear other than some edge-nicks in the wrapper (predictable as it extends beyond the text pages); as is likewise predictable with this cheap paper, there is some (but not heavy) foxing inside. Tipped at the gutter of the title page is the small armorial bookplate of the author and playwright George Barr McCutcheon (1866-1928), who was also a renowned book collector. This is a great rarity, not just within Thackeray's works but within Victorian literature as a whole, with only a handful of known copies (the previous copy to appear at auction was in 1989). Van Duzer 88 ("The only copy traceable is in the Boston Athenaeum"); Parrish 36. Housed in a felt-lined clamshell case.

First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. Lilla Cabot Perry (1848-1933) was an American artist in the Impressionist style who studied with Claude Monet. Perry studied in France beginning in 1887 and spent summers near Claude Monet in Giverny between 1889 and 1909. It was at this time that she must have created this notebook. Her inscription on the first page establishes the contents: "Monet's correspondance (sic) with various people when he undertook to get the Olympia into the Luxembourg and to place it later in the Louvre. These are exact copies of the letters of which Monet lent us the originals. Lilla Cabot Perry" Completed by Édouard Manet in 1863, "Olympia" created a sensation when it was first exhibited in Paris in 1865. 30 pages of transcribed letters from the likes of Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, Alfred Stevens and Gustave Larroumet urging acceptance of the painting by the Palais Royal. Letters range from July of 1889 to November of 1890. Late 19th Century. Unpag. Ruled notebook with black card stock covers, chipping and color losses along spine.         HAND-ADDRESSED ENVELOPE TO HER SISTER

Autograph. Fine. An envelope (6" x 3-1/4") with a lengthy printed statement by The Citizens' Suffrage Association addressed in the hand of Susan B. Anthony to her younger sister: "Miss Mary S. Anthony/Rochester -- N. Y./U. S. America." On the side of the envelope is written "Zurich/Apr 23rd 83," likely in one of the sisters' hands. Mary Stafford Anthony was a suffrage activist in her own right. Her interest in women's rights, in fact, preceded that of her sister. On August 2, 1848, she attended the Adjourned Convention in Rochester of the First Woman's Rights Convention and, together with her father and mother, signed the Declaration of Sentiments. She was instrumental in establishing the Women's Political Club (later renamed the Political Equality Club) in the 1880s. In 1893, she was elected corresponding secretary for the New York State Woman Suffrage Association, and in 1904 when the International Woman Suffrage Alliance was formed, Susan B. Anthony was declared its first member and Miss Mary Anthony was unanimously declared its second.

Pius Papa IX. Nelle istituzioni di cui finora dotammo i Nostri sudditi fu Nostra intenzione di riprodurre alcune istituzione antiche...

Roma 1848 Nella Tipografia della Rev. Cam. Apostl.. Folio; 16 p.; caption title. Title continues: Statuto Fondamentale Pel Governo Temporale Degli Stati Di S. Chiesa D. Roma. Fundamental statute for secular government of the states of the church; key document in Italian liberty. Constitution proclaimed by Pius IX in response to agitation for constitutional government in the Papal domain. There were to be two chambers: the first, the alto consiglio, members nominated for life by the Pope and the second, 100 elected deputies. Laws adopted by these two chambers had to be scrutinized by the College of Cardinals, then submitted to the Pope for assent or rejection. Ecclesiastical affairs were exempt. This constitution's utility was never tested; demand for an extension of civil rights was eclipsed by the nationalist uprising against Austria that began in Milan on 18 March, four days after this was issued, which swept through Italy. This so-called "liberal constitution," while it addressed complaints that had built for decades and been ignored by the papacy, was hardly satisfactory for reformers and Pius IX, during his long reign as political reactionary, reacted by withdrawing even these modest concessions and destroying most copies of the Statuto Fondamentale. This copy belonged to Nicholas Brown (1792-1859), American Minister to Rome, whose sympathies toward nationalists resulted in the papacy's requesting his removal. Leather spine; marbled-paper boards. Dated (p. 16) 14 March 1848. Stock#NS0051.

Correspondence on the Subject of Convict Discipline and Transportation . presented to both houses of Parliament . May 1848.

      - London, William Cowes 1848. Foolscap publisher's printed wrapper (spine chipped); 144pp and seven folding plans (six with added colouring). A very good copy. Much of this is, naturally, concerned with the concerted push by the colonies to end transportation which, in concert with a fair amount of practical detail about the state of the system and planned reforms and reductions, is not without interest. Added are items like the specifications for a new female penitentiary. The real appeal here, though, is the detailed report on the Prisoners' Barracks at Hobart and plans for improvements by its superintendent James Boyd. Described and illustrated in plan and section are the present, and the proposed and improved cells and 'dormitories'; the appalling cells underneath the chapel; and the tread-wheel. The tread-wheel, punishment for refractory prisoners, was some 50 feet long in a room 68 feet long. Up to 150 prisoners at a time were in this room, 'totally inadequate' as Boyd said. Of greater concern was that there was no separation of prisoners either on or off the wheel ('distressing evils') and Boyd proposes (illustrated in three of the plans) dividing the whole - the wheel and the room - into series of stalls and boxes, isolating the prisoners on and off the wheel. This is less stable-like than you may think, the average stable is airy and commodious in comparison. The wheel seems to have been introduced into British prisons in the 1820s and lasted well into the 20th century despite the agitations of reformers throughout that whole time. Photographs of prison wheels at the end of the century show prisoners in stalls so, while I can't claim that Boyd originated the idea, there is no doubt that such plans were put into being throughout the prison system.         We The Drowned

Harvill Secker,, 2010. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. SIGNED and DATED in publication month - 15th April 2010. UK First edition. Fine unread copy. SIGNED and DATED to the title page. Scarce signed. True UK first. This is an epic drama of adventure, courage, ruthlessness and passion by one of Scandinavia's most acclaimed storytellers. In 1848, a motley crew of Danish sailors sets sail from the small island town of Marstal to fight the Germans. Not all of them return - and those who do will never be the same. Among them is the daredevil Laurids Madsen, who promptly escapes again into the anonymity of the high seas. As soon as he is old enough, his son Albert sets off in search of his missing father on a voyage that will take him to the furthest reaches of the globe and into the clutches of the most nefarious company. Bearing a mysterious shrunken head, and plagued by premonitions of bloodshed, he returns to a town increasingly run by women - among them a widow intent on liberating all men from the tyranny of the sea. From the barren rocks of Newfoundland to the lush plantations of Samoa, from the roughest bars in Tasmania, to the frozen coasts of northern Russia, "We, The Drowned" spans four generations, two world wars and a hundred years. Carsten Jensen conjures a wise, humorous, thrilling story of fathers and sons, of the women they love and leave behind, and of the sea's murderous promise. This is a novel destined to take its place among the greatest seafaring literature.

In his History of South Africa Theal remarks of this book that "The leading events of that war are faithfully described, and a correct view is given of the occurrences that led to it... Dolman was murdered and eaten by his bearers, what remained of him and his servant being buried at Livingstone's station at Kolobeng.

Personal Recollections of the late Daniel O'Connell, MP 1775-1847

186, Strand, London.: Chapman and Hall, 1848 2 vols complete, near fine, 1st ed. In uniform, half tan calf with red marbled boards, some blind tooling, corners and edges brushed. Spines, attractive decorative gilt tooling, raised bands, titles in gilt to red and green calf labels, edges brushed. Internally, brown endpapers, text block edges sprinkled red, no inscriptions, printed by C Whiting, Beaufort House, Strand. Vol 1, 1848, [3], (iv-vi), [1], 2-312 pp. Vol 2, 1848, [2], [1], 2-231 pp, [1] adverts. A superb copy. (Allibone 1448.2802). O'Connell, Daniel [known as the Liberator], Irish nationalist leader who while in popular esteem O'Connell is the quintessential Irish national champion, his international significance is underestimated. He was a key figure in the emergence of European democracy and no Irish person before or since has commanded so much attention on the continent as he did in his lifetime. Similarly forgotten to a large extent is his role as an advocate of the rights of those civilly disadvantaged such as Jews, black slaves, and Australian Aborigines. Universalist and nationalist, champion of the weak and truculent bully, man of principle and shameless opportunist, O'Connell remains, like Napoleon or Gladstone, one of those figures with whom historians will never even imagine that they have finished.
