Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent

London, 1848. London, 1848. <p>Hooker, William Jackson (1785-1865). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent. [London,] Royal Gardens, Kew, Nov. 16, 1848. 2-1/2pp. 178 x 112 mm. Fine.</p><p>Hooker, the first full-time director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, devoted himself to the study of botany from an early age, specializing in mosses, liverworts and other cryptogamia. He served as regius professor of botany at the University of Glasgow from 1820 to 1841, when he was appointed to head Kew Gardens. Under Hooker&#39;s leadership Kew grew from eleven acres to its present size of nearly 300 acres, and its collections vastly increased, largely due to a network of Hooker&#39;s former students who brought in specimens from around the world. Hooker&#39;s own herbarium, which contained some 4000 volumes and one million dried plant specimens, was purchased by the British government for the nation after Hooker&#39;s death. Hooker was the author of over two dozen works on botany, including British Jungermanniae (1816), which established hepaticology (the study of liverworts) as a separate field; he also edited several botanical journals. </p><p>In his letter Hooker thanks his correspondent for sending him plant specimens from India:</p><p>"The two cases of Plants for Dr. Falconer were delivered in good time. I have now to thank you for a parcel received today from Mr. Dalzell, Bombay, containing some very interesting Plants. <p>"Truly I have much more novelty from the East of India than any other portion of that vast territory."</p><p>"Dr. Falconer" refers to Hugh Falconer (1808-65), the distinguished botanist, geologist and paleontologist who was the first to come up with a "punctuated equilibrium" theory of evolution. Falconer spent many years in India, where he ran the Saharanpur and Calcutta botanical gardens and put together an enormous collection of plant and fossil specimens from the region.</p><p>Hooker also touches on the activities of his son, naturalist Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911):</p><p>"You know, I dare say that Kinchinjunga [i.e., Kangchenjunga, in the Himalayas5] is now ascertained to be the highest mountain in the world, 28,172 ft.-about 60 miles north of Darjeeling. Dr. Hooker is now gone to explore it, as much as he can."</p><p>Joseph Hooker spent three years (1848-50) exploring the Himalayas, and was the first European to collect plants from the region. Kangchenjunga, which straddles the border between India and Nepal, was believed to be the world&#39;s tallest mountain until 1852, when the results of the British Great Trigonometric Survey revealed that Mt. Everest was the taller peak. </p>

Sydney in 1848: Illustrated by copper-plate engravings.

      D. Wall, 76 York Street, n.d. but, Sydney 1848 - Quarto, with full page copper plate engravings throughout, owner's name "Alfred C. Johnson"; a good copy in the original pink papered boards (stained and spotted), preserved in a blue folding quarter morocco book-form box, lettered to the spine. First edition, first issue of Australia's first work devoted to architecture, showing the Georgian heritage of Sydney at a time when it was a city of just 50,000 inhabitants: 'invaluable for the early topography of Sydney' (Ferguson). Joseph Fowles arrived in Sydney in 1838 and this is without doubt his most important work, providing remarkably detailed information on the buildings of mid-nineteenth-century Sydney. As Morton Herman puts it, 'the Sydney he records was a lovely colonial town of clean, chaste Georgian architecture. Whole streets were pleasant compositions of harmonious buildings, few of them over three stories high, all clearly designed, well mannered and an orderly delight to the eye?' (Foreword to the facsimile edition of 1963). Published by subscription, this work consists of forty "Copperplate Engravings of the Principal Streets, Public Buildings, Churches, Chapels, Etc.". Fowles stated that its express purpose was 'to remove the erroneous and discreditable notions connected with the Colony'. It is one of the rarer Australian illustrated books whilst its importance to architectural history is without rival. No further such detailed study appeared for at least fifty years. The handful of small illustrations of printers establishments used in this list all derive from this work. This work was re issued in 1878 with the text reset, and has been reprinted many times over. This first edition is greatly enhanced by its forty fine copper-engravings produced in Sydney. It was first issued in parts (an almost impossible rarity today; we offered such a set in a recent catalogue): this is its first appearance in bookform, here in the first issue (with a sheet of reviews and advertisements, omitted from later issues, following the title-page). These illustrations were engraved by W. Harris from original drawing done by Fowles and were well received by the press as "superior to any previous attempts at representing Sydney as it really is? " (Bell's Life in Sydney). Throughout his life Fowles taught as well as practised art. He was in charge of the training and examination of art teachers for the National Board of Education from 1854 until 1867 when the board was succeeded by the Council of Education. It was largely through his efforts that drawing was being taught in every government school in New South Wales by the surprisingly early date of 1869. He was also drawing master at a number of private schools, including The King's School, Sydney Grammar, Sydney High and Camden College, as well as at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts (lessons £1 a quarter).         Sarawak; Its Inhabitants and Productions : being Notes during a Residence in that Country with His Excellency Mr. Brooke

Richard Bentley, London 1848 - Octavo, with 7 engraved plates; a good copy in contemporary half calf, respined. The first issue (the title-page was subsequently amended to read "H.H. The Rajah Brooke") of Low's account of Sarawak at the beginning of a century of rule by the British Raj. James Brooke, a former military officer of the East India Company, had visited the territory (now part of Malaysia) in 1839 and assisted the sultan in suppressing a revolt. He was rewarded in 1841 by being granted the position of rajah of Sarawak. Despite his endeavours to suppress head-hunting, Low's account provides detailed observations of this practice, as well as information about a number of tribes, to many of whom he represented the first point of white contact.

Erstausgabe. Geographical Memoir upon Upper California, in Illustration of the Map of California

Washington DC: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, 1848. Washington DC: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, 1848. Senate Issue. 67pp. Octavo [23 cm] Rebound in plain tan boards with the title stamped in black on the front board. Preuss&#39;s map is present and in nice condition. The report of this third expedition of Fremont is uncharastically short, due to Fremont&#39;s court martial and resignation from military service. Nevertheless, it enjoyed great popularity since the discovery of gold was announced almost simultaneously with its publication. In fact, it is likely that the "El Dorado Gold Region" labels on the map were added at the very last moment before issue.& & The Preuss map contained here is one of the greatest cartographic achievements of the American West and helped to fill in the great unknown of the Great Basin and points farther West. According to Wheat "they constitute the only detailed reports ever made by Fremont on his expedition of 1845-1846; his journals subsequently were burned, and by the time he came to write his Memoirs he had forgotten nearly everything he did not remember incorrectly." & This report & & The Preuss map also was the first to show the Mormon Zion (albeit wrong - the map shows the Mormon settlement at the northern shore of Utah Lake) and the first to use the name &#39;Golden Gate&#39; in reference to the San Francisco Bay.& & Fremont described the work as follows "The map has been constructed expressly to exhibit the two countries of Oregon and the Alta California together. It is believed to be the most correct that has appeared of either of them; and it is certainly the only one that shows the structure and configuration of the interior of Upper California." With this great map of 1848 John Charles Fremont passes from the Western cartographic scene. Wheat 559. Moffat 17 Wagner-Camp 150:1. Graff 1429. Howes F366

Ohne Ortsangabe, o. J. (ev. um 1848).. 1 Blatt, mit einer Titel-Illustration. kl. 8°, ungebunden.. Wahrscheinlich lithographierter Handschriftendruck. Strophe variierend: "Auf !

- This periodical was the most signifikant publication during the revolutionary developments of 1848-49 to argue for radical medical reform. The reform movement wanted an improvement in the organization of both the medical profession and public health. It advocated the integration of disparate groups of medical practitioners, the integration also of medical education between the different German states, and the development of a scientific medicine based on materialistic principles. To Virchow and Leubuscher, medical reform was, above all, a matter of revolutionary politics. The medical profession had to be concerned with not just medical questions in the narrow sense of the word, but also social and thus political conditions. Very good copy of this scarce opus, two leaves replaced by photocopies

        The Works of John Jewel

Cambridge - Printed at the University Press, 1848. Cambridge - Printed at the University Press, 1848 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of the theological writings of former Bishop of Salisbury, John Jewel Bishop. Edited for the Parker society by the Rev. John Ayre. Jewels sacramental theology follows the early Protestant reformers, such as Luther and Calvin. Jewel defines sacraments as the sacred signs and ceremonies which Christ commanded us to use, that he might by them represent to our eyes the mysteries of our salvation, and most strongly confirm the faith we have in his blood, and seal in our hearts his grace (II. 11). This is especially close to Calvins own definition of a sacrament. From the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David Arthur Palin (bookplate to front pastedowns), collected over a period of some forty years. Condition: Rebound in blue cloth. Externally, generally smart, though with some marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, and quite clean, though with the occasional patch of foxing and some handling marks.

Tipografia Le Monnier, 1848 - 1872, Firenze, - 5 volumi in-8° (216x140mm), pp. 568; 638; 690; 623; 671; solida legatura coeva m. pelle con titolo, fregi, filetti e tomaisons in oro su dorsi a nervetti.
